Do you despise compassion? Or is it patronizing? Do you actually have a right to judge me for getting up to give my seat to a woman who can barely stand because she's holding a toddler? How on earth could you suggest that my decision to offer her my chair was somehow wrong???
I have just as much right to my seat as she does, don't I? So if she wants to stand, she can just deal with it!! Is that really your take?
🙄
How sad!
No, that’s not what I meant... my point isn't that I won't get up out of pity... it's that I might get up for entirely different reasons...
By the way, I *will* get up... but that's not even the point here. Everyone is taking this way too literally (except for a few people)... when I talked about "getting up," I was speaking figuratively. The real question is: where does that instinct to respect, care for, or show empathy toward others actually come from? Jimmy argues it's a matter of consciousness... someone else might call it humanity, but where does that sense of humanity originate, and what is it that drives us to be human in the first place?
Namche, look, this is a philosophy forum. Try to step back and actually engage with the ideas for a second. We aren't here to point fingers at each other over differing opinions... we're here to take these big questions and use them to examine our own perspectives. We should be asking why we hold the beliefs we do, why we chose them, and what shaped them into what they are today.
Otherwise, go check out the religion or politics boards...😉
