tubeless vs tubeless: help a newbie out! in Cycling ·
If I were in your shoes, I’d honestly suggest starting out with the budget-friendly route. You can pick up a decent puncture repair kit for maybe ten bucks, grab a solid pump for about fifteen, and then throw in another $8.25 spare tube just to be safe. If you eventually find yourself constantly fighting flat tires, then—and only then—should you consider making the jump to tubeless.

Don't get me wrong, tubeless is a pretty slick setup, but it definitely isn't cheap.

Thanks, Grace Rodriguez10. I've gone ahead and added this to the FAQ section. 🙂
casualharbor9 said:So, how much do those reflective vests run you?

They're pretty cheap—maybe twenty bucks or so. I think you can find them at just about any gas station; they're one of those things most people keep in their trunk as standard safety gear.

I definitely agree that most of these laws are nothing more than ink on a page. Honestly, if every single regulation were actually enforced the way it was written, we probably wouldn't even be allowed to sneeze in the middle of a national park.

Anyone who skims through that without actually knowing the local traffic laws is going to walk away thinking cyclists aren't allowed on the pavement at all.

From what I understand, you aren't even supposed to be riding on the sidewalk unless there's a designated bike lane painted right there...

Could you guys drop some links to shops you actually recommend? Ideally, somewhere selling panniers directly so I can just grab them online. Honestly, I'm losing my mind over this... I’ve spent half a day wandering all over New York City just to have every single shop tell me the exact same thing. hhhhhh

I'd still stick with these if I were you:

You'll definitely be waiting about 2 to 3 weeks for them to arrive, though. If you're in a massive rush, you could always check out those panniers at $500 or wherever they keep them over at the Nike store on Labor Street. I swung by there recently and, of course, they still have them in stock. Just ask the staff and see if you can charm them into a discount—they might be getting tired of staring at them 😁

Anyone in the market for some panniers? I spotted these on Craigslist and they look pretty legit, though obviously, you’d want to check them out in person before committing:

Richard Wright3 said:Nike is pricey; I know that from buying hiking gear. Honestly, I was surprised they even carried bins there.

So, what did the whole thing end up costing you in the end?

It caught me off guard seeing them there too, though I wasn't really planning on dropping that much cash on them. I ended up grabbing them as part of a larger order through a Trek Bicycle clearance sale—with a little bit of a bug in the system, if I recall correctly—so by the time everything settled, I think I paid about $110 or $120.

Richard Wright3 said:We have such a great selection of high-quality panniers here that I actually ended up having to order from overseas. Then again, I suppose "quality" is entirely subjective depending on what you're looking for.

Generally speaking, anything that’s actually built to last is going to cost you a pretty penny. I remember browsing through the Nike store over in downtown Chicago and spotting some decent waterproof bags priced at about $500 (roughly $250 per bag), but I managed to find the exact same ones online for about a third of the price.

I’m using something pretty similar to these:

The ones in the link are a newer model with an extra front pocket, but the price tag was essentially the same—around 60 bucks for the pair, plus shipping and tax.
Adhesive patches in Cycling ·
Where on earth did you pick that up? Everywhere I look, all I see are the standard ones...

By the way, those little tubes of vulcanizing "glue" are actually pretty tiny, so you can easily just toss one into your patch kit bag. Just make sure you don't forget to let the adhesive set for a bit before you go pressing the patch down.

gentlefalcon43 said:Thanks, but I usually just stick to whey protein... can I just mix some glucose into my water instead? Like, if I have about 8 ounces of water, how much glucose should I throw in there?

What's the goal with the glucose? Honestly, you'd probably get better results just grabbing a couple of bananas or something with actual substance.

Just a heads up though, plain whey alone isn't actually packed with much protein.

I picked up some dextrose... now, how does one actually use this stuff? Do I just mix it with water, or what? The label says it can be used as a sweetener for pretty much anything, but my real question is about post-workout timing. How should I be consuming it then? And in terms of ratios, how much powder am I looking at per amount of liquid? I'm totally lost here, so any help would be appreciated since I'm a complete newbie to this.🙂

Honestly, it's pretty straightforward—just take a standard scoop of whey, say about 30g, toss in 50g of glucose, mix the whole thing with some water, and drink it down.

redcanyon66 said:I just wanted to ask... what's the deal with calories? How much do they actually matter when you're trying to drop some weight?

Of course they matter. It’s pretty straightforward math, really—if you want to lose weight, you have to consume fewer calories than your body burns in a day. That includes everything from your basal metabolic rate to whatever energy you use just moving around or hitting the gym.

I actually ended up picking up the exact same one at Best Buy last year, and honestly, it’s been holding up pretty well so far. 🙂

I suppose we’re just waiting for someone to actually explain what "easy" even looks like in this context. 😬

Don't get me wrong, I'm asking out of pure curiosity. 🥳 😁

Honestly, though, I think it would be much easier to just let people slip through the cracks than to spend all our energy constantly circling back to scrape them clean... not that I’m officially endorsing this kind of Civil Disobedience, mind you—I am a moderator, after all, and I really should be keeping an eye on things like that.🤣

Jamie Palmer said:I tend to just tune them out, honestly, but there’s always that one guy—you know the type—who decides he’s the king of the road just because he's making a turn at an intersection while I'm sitting there staring at a red light. Suddenly, it’s like I’ve personally offended his entire lineage, and I’m getting blasted with constant honking and enough verbal abuse to make a sailor blush, all because I'm actually following the damn traffic laws.

Well, he knows perfectly well that I have just as much right to pass through there as he does. Honestly, if anything, he should be the one stepping aside to let me go first.

Yeah, that’s honestly the worst part for me—when the horns start blaring at you, and all I can think about is how much I’d love to just slam that button down and be done with it. 🙄
How do I build bone density?!?!? in Hobbies & Leisure ·
Four months is basically a blink of an eye. If you aren't seeing any actual progress after a year or two of grinding away with consistent forearm training, then maybe we should have a real conversation about it. Until then, let's consider this matter closed.

Honestly, don't get too hung up on those supplements; most of them are pretty much cut from the same cloth, and you really shouldn't expect any magic tricks to happen once you swallow them. If you actually want to see results, you’re better off just focusing on eating a diverse, nutrient-dense diet instead.
