Well, since we're all acting like experts on who’s right, if I’m being honest, I actually see him in the first and second or third rows...🙂

I just didn't want to make things complicated😁

I see him sitting right there in the second row 🤣

He’s alright. 😉

swiftmaker20 said:I couldn't care less about AYL. If they want to play, fine, but they shouldn't go thinking they're some kind of legends, because they're definitely not. 🤷

Every single one of those three or four local metal bands thinks they're the Metal Bend Ever. Even Forlorn Legacy had that ego... right up until they broke up. 😕

Anyway, I'm totally derailing this thread. Whatever. I was hanging out near Pasim over in Seattle the other day, and man, it was actually pretty great 🙏 🙏 🙏
So, yeah... let them play there if they want to. 😕

It’s this incredibly massive, overwhelming indifference—so thick you could practically stick a spoon upright in it. Yeah, I finally wrapped my head around that after spending a few days meditating on this absolute garbage pile. It’s honestly the only thing tribute bands ever make me feel. 🤷

A topic that’s going to drive at least ten moderators absolutely insane over the next two pages🙏 🙏 🙏

Is it just me, or am I the only one allowed to start this thread? 🙂

:Don't you dare start some lecture about metal being nothing more than parasitic music:
:Don't even think about starting a manifesto claiming metal is just parasitic noise:
:Seriously, don't come at me with that whole "metal is a parasite" nonsense:

Death Disco is actually a tribute band for Ramirez 😕

Honestly, I think the only thing lower than Ramirez on the scale of suck is the bottom of the ocean...

The Velvet Underground:

A Ramirez tribute band😈

Maybe you and I should just start one ourselves. I’ll be the one screaming "DON'T EAT THE HAIR" at the front of the stage...🙂

Starting this thread because of a debate I just got dragged into over on RL. Apparently, that's about the only place left where people actually talk anymore, besides these forums. 😕

So, what’s the deal with tribute bands? Do you guys actually go see them? And by that, I mean bands that spend their whole lives playing the hits of groups you already love.
If you do, what's the vibe? Like, in general, is it a good time or just... meh?
If you don't, why not? Do you look at those musicians as posers, or just people trying too hard?

Anyone here actually playing in one?
I'm also curious about what drives someone to start a tribute act instead of just grinding to get their own original sound off the ground.

And finally, if you've stumbled upon a tribute band that actually knows what they're doing, drop a recommendation here.

🙂

Alex Cook, Stipe23, fadedsailor57... honestly, how would you even tell them apart? 🤷

And look, let's be real here—they're all just twenty-somethings. They aren't even from the local university... 😁

Gregory Miller4 said:I’m curious about the whole thing regarding reviving old threads—specifically, why people consider it such a negative thing.

I’d really love to hear from the mods first, but I'm interested in what everyone else thinks too.

So, what’s actually wrong with someone posting in a thread that’s, say, two years old?

It really depends on what kind of topic we're talking about and which subforum it lives in.

In the World News section, we have threads about all sorts of animals; for instance, I don't see any point in having three separate threads about skunks. It won't bother me one bit if someone bumps a five-year-old thread just to leave a comment saying they hate skunks. The thread will pop back to the front page for a while, and if people actually care, the conversation continues. Usually, those kinds of topics are pretty straightforward and don't involve deep debates.

Over on General Discussion, we also have threads that get dragged along for years—mostly those massive catch-all threads about things like tattoos, gift ideas, and stuff like that.

But it drives me absolutely insane when someone digs up a three-year-old thread where the original author was venting about some drama with a friend. People argue for a little bit, the thread sinks, and then some random person comes along to quote the very first post and start handing out advice... 🤦 even though most of the people involved in that thread aren't even on this forum anymore, and some, God help us, have actually passed away.

(I dealt with a situation once where someone revived an ancient thread and quoted a user who had died last year. Look, I know they weren't being malicious, but what was the point?)

If a thread is about someone's specific personal problem or a good debate that died out years ago, there’s just no reason to revive it. If you want to talk about the same subject, just start a new thread instead of digging up something from five years ago when different people were here, the rules were different, and it simply makes no sense to try and pick up where we left off.

Disclaimer: this is just my personal take on reviving old threads and doesn't necessarily represent official forum policy because, like I said, every subforum is different and needs its own approach. 😉
If you’re looking for raw, unadulterated rage in your music, stick to punk.
If you want songs about slaying dragons and epic battles, go with power metal.
As far as I'm concerned, nothing else really matters... 😁

It’s honestly pretty stupid, but there’s nothing you can do to stop it or ban it unless people actually agree to play along.
The guidelines regarding usernames give some advice on what to do when the handle you want is already taken, but those are just suggestions, not actual rules.
I remember this one case a few months back where two users had practically identical names (if you look at the band Caveman mentioned 😁), and the "original" user reached out to the "new guy" and asked him to change it, so he actually did.
But in principle, there isn't much anyone can do about it, and honestly—even if it bugs us—should we even be trying to fix it?

Yeah, it’s clearly the group that isn't exactly hitting the mark on intelligence here 😁

Look, when you join an online forum, the whole idea is to build a digital identity. What's even the point if, say, I stumble upon your post right now and can't find anything else you've ever written? If I can't see the threads you started or get any sense of who you actually are—beyond just a couple of random comments on a topic we both happened to click on—then what are we even doing? Without that history, nobody would recognize anyone, let alone actually get to know each other... and honestly, nobody could ever become a moderator... you couldn't even moderate the site at all... because nobody is crazy enough, nor capable enough, to memorize every single post and link it back to a specific username. So, I have to ask... what's the goal there?

Nah, they wouldn't disappear. I actually use them, so I know how it works. 🙂
If you ask me, subscriptions are easily the best and fastest way to keep up with what's happening on this forum...

Of course that would be a disaster, because then by definition it wouldn't even be a forum anymore. It would just turn into some closed-off chat room or a private email service, or something along those lines...

All I'm saying is, it feels a bit weird to me that anyone on this forum can just scroll through every single thread I've started or commented on... that's all!

Look, if you’re so worried about being seen, then send private messages, fire off an email, start a private group on Facebook, or just chat on Microsoft.

By their very definition, forums are open and public spaces. I honestly can't believe some people don't get that. 😁
