I gotta admit, I actually liked it. I went into this feeling pretty skeptical, honestly, but then it just hooked me. Ended up liking it way more than I thought I would.
Is he even alive? Personally, I don't think so. But he’s got plenty of good friends trying their hardest to convince everyone he still is.
Hmm, I’ve never really gone down the rabbit hole of trying to classify things like that. I mean, sure, I often label movies as "futuristic," but in my head, that doesn't mean they aren't Sci-Fi. I don't get hung up on strict definitions or whatever. To me, calling something "futuristic" is just a way to describe the vibe—kind of like how you'd call a movie a crime thriller. It's not a literal category, just a way to frame it.
For instance, take The Matrix versus Equilibrium. I’d put The Matrix firmly in the Sci-Fi camp, but Equilibrium? I’d just call that futuristic. That’s basically how I rank them. But again, like I said, I'm just describing the style of the film. 🙂
Brian Gonzalez7 said:The movie is totally insane, and if I’m not mistaken, it came out before The Matrix, babe... though that whole idea of not knowing what's a dream and what's real has been in a thousand sci-fi novels, so even The Matrix isn't exactly groundbreaking... The movie is gross to you for one simple reason—you don't like Cronenberg. You need to watch wayyyy more movies in this genre before you can actually judge him properly.
Well, I saw they both dropped in '99, and I wasn't exactly sure which one hit first. I wasn't even trying to claim one was some rip-off; I was just comparing similar themes.
I get that the theme shows up in a thousand sci-fi novels, but it's not exactly everywhere in movies... we're talking about films here, right?
Let's recap: the movie is disgusting because of the gross scenes, not the theme. In my first post, I said I don't think the movie is stupid, and I don't think it's boring, but those scenes with the meat, the blood, that stuff the main characters eat.... ugh, gross...
But I gotta admit, it's the kind of movie that sticks with you. It was the same way with A Clockwork Orange... I kept thinking about that movie for ages, and honestly, the more I think about it, the better it gets.
This movie is actually good, otherwise I wouldn't have even started a thread about it... I actually dig the theme more than The Matrix, but... I just can't stand those scenes with the butchered meat and all that. For me personally, if the whole movie stayed the same but they swapped those slimy scenes for something a bit more "palatable," it would be way better.
And yeah, I haven't really watched much Cronenberg, but I can catch up eventually, right? 😉
So, I watched this movie yesterday—something I’d actually never even heard of before—and I gotta say, I have never seen anything more disgusting in my entire life. It’s not that the movie is stupid, or bad, or boring... it’s just straight-up revolting. At least for me.
I mean, David Cronenberg, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Judd Law, Willem Dafoe... okay, fine, the lineup sounds decent enough... and I wouldn't go so far as to say it was a bad movie, but man, I felt so gross watching it... like 🙂
The whole thing deals with that whole virtual reality vs. real life thing where you can't tell what's real and what's a game, but we've seen that before in total recall, and The Matrix isn't far off either.
But this movie is just totally weird, and the worst part is how many slimy scenes there are... that whole game thing, those animals, that bone gun... ugh, gross.
I don't know, maybe I just don't get it. Or maybe it'll grow on me after I sit with it for a bit... hmm... What do you guys think?
I mean, what kind of logic was even used here? Is this just about who you personally like or something? At this rate, any random person on a message board could whip up their own poll.
If you're gonna make a poll, at least give us some kind of categorization for why you picked these specific actors, because some of these names don't even belong in the same universe together.

...it just took us forever to realize it was actually a parody. 😬
Seriously though, I honestly had no clue it was a spoof. 😁 The last time I watched it, I was just a kid, so I just took everything at face value. It actually took me ages to pin down who the lead actor even was because I couldn't place the face. Then I'm watching this one flick starring Coburn and it finally clicks—wait, HE was the guy from that other movie. That's basically how I pieced my memory back together. 🙂
Man, I only have fragments of this movie stuck in my head. I watched it ages ago and I know I absolutely loved it back then, but I can't for the life of me remember the title.
I'm pretty sure James Coburn was the lead. He plays some kind of special agent, though I haven't got a clue what his actual job is. But he's got these crazy gadgets, totally in the style of James Bond. He sleeps in this weird way on these sticks, and he's got an alarm clock that works by having something pop out of his wristwatch and tap his pulse. Apparently, he can actually slow his heart rate down, and that little device helps him trigger it. He uses that trick to make his enemies think he's already dead.
That's really all I've got... just those random bits. But I swear, when I was a kid, this movie was everything to me. 😁

See, I totally blanked on Robert Downey. Look, the guy is talented—I mean, that Oscar nomination 🙄 pretty much proves it—and he’s got that certain something. He was just being an idiot... or maybe just crazy. He still has a shot at turning things around after prison, but... I don't know if it'll actually happen. I'm rooting for him, though. He was easily the best part of Ally McBeal, and since that was post-prison, hey, maybe he really can pull it off.

Uh, I totally thought you were talking about me. 😁
nimblemarlin17 said:I don't know, I still feel like this is a total step backward for him, especially since he’s showing up so many years later. He was the lead in the greatest kid's movie ever made, and now he's just some side character in a movie that's won a ton of awards (even if it isn't anything close to The Goonies 👍 )...
Totally agree. Sean Astin was incredible in The Goonies. If he hadn't put on so much weight, he might've actually been a better Frodo Baggins. 🙂
When I first saw this thread, I honestly thought you guys were talking about those "rising stars" who just don't have what it takes to make it. Sure, the names you listed might not be around right now, but that doesn't mean there won't be more like them.
To me, the real tragedy is when someone actually had the shot at a massive, legendary career, but then it all just... vanished. Not because they failed, but because they're gone.
That’s why I have to bring up River Phoenix. He was even nominated for an Oscar when he was, what, 17? I can't remember exactly. Everyone saw him as the next big thing. He was actually supposed to play Romeo in that new Romeo and Juliet adaptation—the one Leonardo DiCaprio ended up taking instead. And word is, that wasn't even the only role Leo snatched up after Phoenix passed away. Sadly, it looks like he was just too fragile and let drugs get the better of him... turning him into one of those "wasted talents" who never got the chance to succeed... and never will.
Hey everyone, thanks for all the help and the solid suggestions.
Anyway, I ended up downloading a few more of their tracks and they’re definitely hitting the spot. I’m gonna dive into the ones you guys recommended later too, just so I can put together a little playlist. And sorry about that comparison to Lemon Tree. 😵 After spinning it a few more times, I realized how dumb that was.
Honestly, I’m kind of obsessed with how much they stand out from the usual garbage playing on the radio these days. They just have this different vibe, and I am totally here for it. 🙂
Also, even though I usually lean towards lighter stuff, I grabbed one of their heavier tracks and it actually goes hard.
There was a time when I was really into Bambi Molesterse—they had some pretty heavy stuff too—so I was vibing with it. It all just depends on the mood, I guess. 😉
So, I’m riding the bus one day and the radio is playing—which, let's be real, I almost never listen to. This one song comes on and honestly, it hit me immediately. Since I had zero clue what it was, I just scribbled down a few lyrics, tossed them into Google, and found out it’s "Ocean Spray" by Nirvana. The funny thing is, I’ve never even heard of this band before. But man, I loved that track. The whole vibe of the song just worked for me. It actually reminded me a bit of "Lemon Tree," just that same kind of style.
I'm curious, does anyone else here listen to them? And is their whole discography basically this style?
Anyway, I'm downloading a few more of their tracks right now to see what else they've got. 🙂

Man, those thread ideas belong in the car enthusiast, sports, or home improvement sections. 😁
We could just keep going though, right? Like moving on to Movies: 1. How does Darth Vader pull off those moves? USA: 2. Is Obi-Wan gay? Politics: 3. How did Palpatine manage to win over the Senate? Beauty: 4. Where can I find Amidalin make up?
Dammit! I totally missed it. 😢 Is it seriously that good? Should I grab a copy for my collection? Man, you guys are making my mouth water talking about this movie like this.
