I know it isn't exactly classy to quote myself—but here is what I wrote to Banderas a while back...
The Grammys exist for one reason—to stroke the egos of specific industry lobbies and drive up sales for hand-picked products. That's it. Nothing else.
Here’s what Scott McCloud—lead singer and guitarist for GVSB—is claiming in today's edition of the New York Post. He's an insider, so take it seriously. 😉
We used to attend award shows—the Grammys and all that nonsense. Let’s be honest: they’re all essentially the same brand of garbage. There’s a tiny bit of entertainment involved, but only if you’re willing to suffer through it; otherwise, it’s just mind-numbingly dull. It's nothing more than a glorified excuse for the music industry to pat itself on the back and flaunt its scale. Everyone sits there staring at one another, exchanging hollow compliments and fake smiles—but underneath the surface, they’re really just tallying up who moved the most units.
boldeagle3 said:Obviously, quantity has zero correlation with quality—especially when it comes to awards. Who even decides what those are for anyway?
They exist solely to stroke the egos of specific industry lobbies and to inflate the sales numbers for hand-picked products... nothing more, nothing less.😉
And if you happened to grow up on British post-punk, it’s entirely possible you’d find New Order to be a disappointment—admittedly, I did. They were absolute legends, whereas Franz Ferdinand is really nothing more than a decent enough band...
Personally, I find FF to be decent enough—they clearly studied their post-punk lessons and packaged them quite well... But I’d be lying if I said I didn't notice they did it all much earlier and far better than them... Look, some of those guys are actually playing in the club tonight 😎
boldeagle3 said:Exactly. 👍 The kind of people who think R.E.M. is garbage but call Joy Division a masterpiece—while dismissing New Order as filler—well, they'll find their way to this conversation soon enough.
Even though I follow what The Wire and Pitchfork have to say every year, I’m always most accurately hit by the guy behind almostcool
You’ve probably all seen Pitchfork's list anyway, so here is The Wire's:

And yeah, those guys at The Wire really grate on my nerves—always reserving spots on their list for heavyweights like Sonic Youth or Bjork... I can wrap my head around it when they're talking about Murray Street, but I honestly have no clue what the hell Sonic Nurse is doing there, let alone at number two... My friend might be onto something, the same one who causes a copy of The Wire to travel from London to Austin every single month 😎 ...he says Sonic Youth probably rolls out the red carpet for the Wire crew whenever they're in New York... maybe we should try offering them some BBQ and craft beer and see how far Lavender Fields and Peach Pit actually get us 😉
Yeah, a real family vibe... I actually preferred when he played solo—might’ve been the best set I've heard from him so far. He really nailed the atmosphere—if only I'd bothered to fix the lighting a bit better 😳
Yeah, Terry Lee Hale is performing tomorrow... and as for posters, I’m convinced they’re losing their grip—mostly thanks to the internet—so I decided to see if that actually holds water. Besides, I’m seeing about half as many posters this season compared to before, yet concert crowds are twice as big as they used to be.
The drummer and the guitarist—who also handles vocals, apparently—were so loud on stage that the PA system was practically irrelevant... That lunatic behind the kit wired up our drums the second he stepped on, because we realized pretty quickly his own gear was complete junk. Once he hit the snare for the first time, it all clicked—we’re now looking at 5mm deep craters in our tom heads. Even the kid from the opening act (yeah, seriously) said the head was totally shot 😲 And then you're expected to mix someone like that 🙄
Nicholas King62 said:Does anyone else think that guitarist in the green shirt looks exactly like that guy from Just a Fire? He's a dead ringer—just couldn't tell if he has that same hand tumor.😁
Lol, obviously he looks like him—it's because he *is* the guitarist from Just a Fire.🙂
Heh, most people probably don't even remember this, but for me, it was the concert of a lifetime—every single second is burned into my brain. The absolute highlight? That intro when a totally wasted Tabata stumbled onto the stage, grabbed the mic, and blurted out something like, "Anyone got anything to get high?" in a mix of Japanese and English...
Anyway, after pulling a 40-hour marathon this weekend where eating and sleeping became non-existent, it’s no surprise I did absolutely zero prep for tonight’s haymarket riot—not even touching the pre-sale... So, tickets will be available only at the door for the pre-sale $8.25... 😳
