Mocking lesbian marriage in Feedback & Suggestions ·
brightcrane56 said:Under Article 5 of the Family Law of the United States, marriage is legally defined as the union between a woman and a man. Because of that, "lesbian marriage" isn't actually a legal thing, so you can't really claim someone is being offensive by joking about something that doesn't exist in the eyes of the law.
It’s honestly just like getting all worked up because someone made a silly joke about SpongeBob SquarePants.

I suppose this kind of logic would usually serve as enough ground to lock a thread and demand a rephrase, but it certainly isn't a valid excuse for the initial trolling (not just directed at lesbians, but generally speaking) and the subsequent pile of other posts.

I know, I know—it's MK, where everything is permitted and supposedly hilarious. ☕

BTW, if I were actually "joking about something that doesn't exist," I’d be a bit worried. Or, at the very least, I'd probably look into changing my supplier. 😁

Here’s the link to the thread.

If you actually bother to read through it, you'll see a massive pile of homophobic slurs and insults aimed at lesbians and the rest of the LGBT community.

A thread like this has absolutely no business being on a platform that claims to promote decency and basic manners.

Not a single user has been banned, let alone given an official warning.

Even without digging deep—just looking at the opening post—you can already spot a mountain of attacks directed at women as a whole.

But, honestly, don't even bother; you're just going to get the same old canned response: "Oh, this is Men's Corner, that's allowed here, this kind of stuff is encouraged and treated as a joke, the guys are just messing around, they don't mean it seriously, blah blah blah." I think the last person who raised similar complaints about this specific subreddit ended up getting nuked—well, I'm not entirely certain, but I'm pretty sure those moderators sent them straight to a permanent ban.

The real issue arises when someone uses a bit of common sense to ask why this same level of "universal tolerance" isn't applied to other subreddits—ranging from the Women's Corner, which would be the most logical comparison, all the way to LJESa and similar chatterboxes (though, heaven forbid, someone suggests that LJESa and its ilk are actually places for serious debate).

That’s where the moderators themselves step onto incredibly slippery ground; they end up using arbitrary interpretations to decide whether a statement is punishable or just "healthy male banter," depending entirely on whether it was allegedly written seriously or jokingly—and whether it happened on this specific subreddit where such things are supposedly funny, or somewhere else.

So, really, why waste your breath? Just give up.

A topic like that shouldn't even be on a forum that promotes decency and etiquette.

I don't believe it's the mission of this forum to promote "decency" in that stiff, pedantic sense, and certainly not "etiquette."
Daniel Ward87 said:By asking him myself. Not just him, but I checked with the other moderators too, and I even went out of my way to look into how things are handled here.

I get that his post probably shouldn't have happened, and he should've just said we don't do that anymore. But no, I really don't think he was trolling.

And he’ll just—quite predictably—respond with, "Yeah, obviously I was trolling, did you see how bad I wrecked the thread, huh? Huh? Huh?" 😕

Trolling isn't always about someone's underlying intentions—some people just have a natural, innate talent for it on these forums, trolling even when they think they're being perfectly well-meaning. The way Nicole James jumped in, well, nomen est omen—that whole ego-trip of "me, me, me, look at me, this is what I'm celebrating"—is absolutely trolling. It shows a complete lack of respect for the actual topic and for everyone else participating in it.

But, let's set that aside for a moment: you definitely seem to be prone to a very specific kind of over-analyzing (if you will) of anything a moderator says. Not long ago, after you interpreted Kowino saying "I don't think I did anything wrong" as "both of them know they messed up", and now you're reading "Next year I'll open a massive mega-thread for all the various holiday greetings so nobody accidentally ends up feeling offended..." as if it means "you guys can go screw yourselves next year since I'll be the one opening my own consolidated mega-thread," instead of reading it as "Nicole won't be doing this anymore".

I get the urge—really, I do—to try and smooth over the nonsensical errors or nonsense coming from the mod team, but it probably wouldn't be such a bad idea to stop trying to satisfy that urge by insulting the basic common sense of the rest of the forum users.
Daniel Ward87 said:It's true that there isn't much connection to the Christmas we celebrate today. Also, while Sol Invictus isn't tied to Christ, as I mentioned in the link, the idea of bringing Christ closer to pagans by blending religious foundations is an old story—anyone with even a basic understanding of religion knows how that works. Okay, I get that this is a bit off-topic for a holiday greeting thread, but I just wanted to clarify that there was no intentional trolling going on here.

One thing is for sure: Nicole James wasn't trying to be provocative, believe me. However, I suggested keeping the Christmas greetings and similar stuff to a more basic level just to avoid any unnecessary drama.

And how exactly did you reach such a definitive conclusion? 😕

Walking into a thread dedicated to wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and immediately pivoting to celebrating the day of the Sun or whatever else—well, it’s basically rewriting someone else's playbook, even if they stay silent about it. I mean, someone could have just as easily decided to wish people a happy birthday for Humphrey Bogart instead. People don't celebrate a random date; they don't celebrate December 25th just for the sake of the calendar, they celebrate Christmas—Jesus' birth and all that jazz. It's meant to be a gesture of goodwill toward everyone.

Is it really that difficult—or perhaps just too unbearable—to let them enjoy their greetings in peace, without poking fun at them from behind the safety of a red username paired with a purple "he definitely wasn't provoking anyone" backup? Does one always have to demonstrate Nicole James's greatness everywhere, making sure to show that I (blah, blah, blah) am out here celebrating something entirely different?

Matthew Anderson said:Look, when we're talking about vaccines, you clearly love using statistics as an appeal to authority.

Statistics—unless they've been doctored, of course—are definitely an "appeal to authority" 😁. Still, they’re certainly a more solid argument than anyone’s subjective value judgments.

It feels like a repeat of that situation with the Law, where I suppose someone feels compelled to say something in defense of the opposing side—regardless of how distasteful that "other side" might be based on every other metric. I remember mistymason1 as being a rather obnoxious and arrogant forum user with incredibly rigid views; I’ve had my fair share of heated exchanges with him. He’s the kind of person I wouldn't want to be even in the same congressional district with, let alone grab a coffee with, so... yeah.

But.

Since I can't see deleted posts, I could only look at what he was supposedly "doing" on that thread about the USO; I didn't comb through all fifty pages, but looking over the last ten, I couldn't find any evidence of "behavioral issues." Whenever someone claims a sentence is offensive, one really ought to keep Tyndall's rule in mind, which suggests that even if you write idiotic things again—meaning, even stating that someone is repeatedly writing nonsense—it isn't necessarily labeling the person themselves as an idiot (and until that rule is overturned, my personal confusion regarding how one is even supposed to identify an idiot if repeated nonsense isn't a reliable sign, remains my own personal problem 😁).

All in all, the guy got singled out because people are bothered by his stances and his refusal to tolerate opposing viewpoints. It's ironic, really, because those very "people" demonstrated the exact same thing—intolerance toward his views. Anyone who is incapable of either crushing his arguments (which are riddled with massive holes) or simply accepting them as his right to hold, should probably donate their computer to the nearest orphanage and spend the rest of their lives offline, rather than whining about being offended and demanding that mistymason1 be silenced.

Last, but not least: a quick search of the unknown would easily turn up instances of very similar—if not identical—behavior and rhetoric, just with the opposite ideological slant; examples of equally intolerant, arrogant, and haphazard advocacy for total sexual liberalism and "liberality." The fact that such views are, dare I say, dominant on this site, nor the fact that those against them (which, in my estimation, includes rational people and a few others—however much they might personally irritate me) are still capable fighters who can wage their own battles without calling for censorship, does not make this disciplinary action any less shameful.

If there were actual examples of direct personal insults (which brings me back to "Tyndall's rule on idiots") or severe violations of the rules that fundamentally change the context (and we haven't seen any such examples here on this Penal Code thread), then the situation would be different—but even then, it's unclear why the whole mess couldn't have been handled with simple warnings or bans.

Otherwise, you can turn yourselves upside down, but this will still look like a vendetta against someone for what he says, rather than how he says it. Those who are silenced and offended (and seemingly incapable of engaging in forum debate) can simply put him on ignore; those who actually know how to handle this can methodically deconstruct every single one of his sentences—isn't that the whole point of a forum? Therefore, these kinds of crackdowns and this nurturing of forum tribalism are utterly pointless.

I’d love to leave some room here for further self-deprecation—but I suppose I’m just too good of a person at heart, so I lack the cruelty required for it.

Merriam-Webster lays it out like this:

singular
N boy
G boy's
D boy
A boy's
V boy
L boy
I boy
plural
N boys
G boys
D boys
A boys
V boys
L boys
I boys

Frank Reed4 said:I’m going to need you to define exactly what you mean by "recently." And tell me precisely how many posts have to pass before you decide to scrub someone's handle from a thread. 🍿
🙂It seems like a fairly straightforward request to me.

And by the way, Frank Reed4 hasn't posted since October 12, 2006—it's not like he's been dropping messages here every single day since then. 🤣

I am attaching some evidence here to show that moderators, or whoever else is running the show (be it super-mods, admins, or some third party altogether), are logging into other people's accounts:
Take this thread that ZgSash started back when Cordelia passed away. If you look at the timestamps, the thread was opened on December 25, 2010, yet according to my records, Cordelia wasn't active after January 13, 2011.

If Cordelia wasn't logging into her own profile—which, let's face it, she couldn't have been—then who was? Once again, I am calling on the administration to speak up, specifically Tyndall, who continues to ignore us completely. I have no intention of letting this go until we get some actual answers. 🙂

At this point, any semblance of a productive conversation should probably just end right here.

What exactly gives you the right to be making these demands? Just because you paid your monthly subscription fee to use this forum doesn't mean you get to dictate terms based on some perceived clause in the user agreement, I suppose.

It honestly baffles me how people manage to turn such trivial matters into massive, unnecessary dramas. I mean, seriously—WTF? Everyone is obsessing over usernames as if they were some sort of cosmic, life-altering issue.

The solution is actually quite simple: just implement a rule where any account that’s been inactive for three years and has fewer than 100 posts gets renamed to "zzzUsername," and then the whole problem is solved.

And what if someone decides to "wake up" after three years and actually wants to participate in the discussion again? Well, nothing. It's that simple. Just go ahead and create a new account and call it a day. Using a new handle isn't going to make you any more important, anyway.

Brandon Castillo4 said:Someone following your line of reasoning might argue that we’re never going to see any real, substantive change as long as Anderson holds onto the keys to this Reddit community. And, if I’m being honest—following your logic—they might actually have a point. 🤷

This is essentially just a substitution of premises.

We aren't even talking about some vague set of "real changes" that just dropped out of thin air without any clear intention or definition—no, we are talking about the specific shifts that have been announced and demanded by the owner of this Reddit thread himself. Therefore, I suppose any opinion or suggestion offered here shouldn't be wasting time debating whether these changes make sense or are completely pointless; instead, the focus really ought to be on the best way to handle the actual "operationalization" of these specific mandates.

I suppose a person could just as easily have demanded an entirely different set of changes—in which case, the whole operational side of things would have had to shift its priorities quite drastically.

I don't want to deal with replying to every single comment individually—so I’ll just say it once more: I am repeating that... No. I honestly believe that in situations like this, we need some radical head-hunting—not that I’m suggesting anyone should dance on graves, mind you, but someone has to take the fall.

Daniel Ward87 said:The way I’m reading you, it sounds like you’re pushing for some kind of radical overhaul of everything...

You completely misread me. 🙂

I am not advocating for a "radical change to everything"—not even slightly. Regarding the mention of the "super-moderator star," I was merely attempting to explain how—and why—granting an "admin star" would actually reinforce the very things being announced verbally.

Let’s get specific about this change; let's start with a single PDF, a person, or whatever else.

I couldn't have been more specific if I tried. 🙂

Nice. Admin. That’s all there is to it. 😁.

Brandon Castillo4 said:He’s being serious—besides, Daniel Ward87 is the new admin now...

I haven't even posted on Politics, nor have I really read it—so, frankly, I don't know the man at all.

However, this isn't actually about whether he is one way or another; without any pretensions or illusions regarding some sort of personnel reshuffling, what I am writing here is more of a "systemic observation." All these grand oaths about moving toward "new directions" and "new winds" remain incredibly shaky when they are being implemented by the exact same people who dominated the old directions and the old winds (for instance—if I may—there is that pervasive sense of edge where everyone continues to "thank" people for their intellect, predicting their futures in various think tanks and such, in a classic old-school President style—though I will try to be polite so no one can claim I'm mocking anyone or being snarky).

The whole narrative would gain a significant amount of credibility if it were backed up by an action like appointing someone who truly embodies those very values—the ones everyone (well, for some, it must be phrased as "...the ones everyone suddenly) swears by—to the very top of this supposedly "new direction" pyramid (and I don't mean the mods).

But then again, it's none of my business.

Scott Long71 said:I run this site as a friendly, non-commercial forum—it’s basically just a small litmus test for the competition.

Thanks for clarifying. I suppose we won't have to spend our time explaining to certain people that this isn't some radical underground cell dedicated solely to tearing down Reddit.

So, we have a new supermoderator superstar 🙂 — Nice...

Admin status immediately. No jokes.

All these changes—let's call them the "humanization" of Reddit, if we're being vague—that are being announced and attempted right now? They simply require at least one drastic, gutsy staffing move that doesn't involve just shuffling the same old deck chairs.

Appointing someone as an admin who isn't "burdened by past grudges," someone without "baggage," someone fundamentally different—finally, someone who managed to "pacify" the President in just three days through sheer, basic decency and humanity—that would actually be a real leap forward and a sign that they are "being serious."

Anything else just feels like trying to teach old dogs new tricks.

Perhaps I wasn't being entirely clear—I don't have any actual issues with how you handled things. But, if we're going to be honest, the rule used to justify that action feels somewhat arbitrary; after all, a link like that doesn't disqualify a team like the Dallas Cowboys, nor does it cause them any harm whatsoever.🙂 (not a psycho)

Brandon Castillo4 said:And honestly, it’s exactly because of edge cases like that which the current rule was established—not because of your standard, everyday posts.

This right here? This is one of the fundamental flaws of this entire platform. It’s that infamous "but."

"Oh, it's fine, you're right, we would allow it, *but* then we'd have to let every random person talk nonsense." Or, "No problem, we'd allow normal posts with links, *but* then we'd have to let everyone do it."

Of course you wouldn't have to. It isn't even a matter of some vague discretionary power; everything can be quite clearly defined within the rules.

At the end of the day, if someone manages to attract people to their forum by convincing them they can read Democrats' private messages or some other similar idiocy, they’ve actually done you a massive favor.
Reddit idea in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Brandon Castillo4 said:Is this actually constructive—or even necessary?

To be honest, answering that is... complicated. I mean that sincerely and with good intentions.

The thing is, we are looking at a very specific, rather rare situation where this topic is actually relevant to this Reddit community—not because of the recent "gut-wrenching" outbursts, mind you, but because the discussions regarding the US National Basketball Association on that thread were substantial enough that even Maria Barnes decided to weigh in (and I highly doubt she’d bother showing up in the middle of some mindless, non-critical hate session directed at her own forum).

Therefore, I suspect there was—or perhaps still is—some merit in once going through all of it, much like what happened over there (that thread was definitely laid to rest a few days ago).

In my view, one really ought to distinguish between posts that say, "The NBA is trash, they're reading your private messages, stealing beer from your fridge while you sleep, come join our garbage-fire forum," and posts that say, "Hey, we have an interesting photo contest happening at Unknown, thought you might be interested," which carries absolutely no animosity toward the NBA.

As for me—well, because I dared to play the role of the "devoted forum loyalist"—my link to that 250-page thread was removed after I posted it in direct response to someone asking where they could find those specific posts. I think that’s a mistake, honestly; it creates this impression that someone is afraid of something—whereas posting that link is actually the best way to ensure that particular thread isn't just ignored here.

Whatever this "new" forum policy turns out to be—and I honestly have my doubts about its effectiveness—one thing remains an absolute fact: banning any mention of other communities is nothing more than a textbook *Fight Club* strategy designed to trap people. In practice, they aren't just enforcing a rule against advertising; they’ve twisted it into a total ban on even hinting at where else you can find a link. It’s a desperate attempt to keep everyone locked in, and frankly, it feels a bit transparent.

It’s a basic principle of human nature—you can't keep a romantic partner locked in a basement just to ensure they never see anyone else besides you. That isn't love; it's just obsession. In much the same way, a community shouldn't try to retain its members by pretending other platforms don't exist or by suppressing any mention of them. You stay relevant by being better, more engaging, and providing a superior experience than the competition—not by banning every single piece of information that suggests there's life outside our own digital walls. Honestly, it’s the classic move of the insecure and the fearful. It’s actually quite laughable to me that a platform this massive would show such blatant signs of anxiety and insecurity.

Your last post felt more like half-baked manifesto mixed with a vague commentary on current events. You kept things super hazy—no names, no specific incidents, just general criticisms tossed out into the void without much substance.

So, now that we’re cutting through the noise, let me ask you: in a nutshell, what are you actually looking for here?
By the way, I’m not trying to be provocative or mess with you, I’m genuinely curious. Let's wrap this up and get to the core: where do we go from here?

I already laid this out in my very first post: I want my partial ban reverted back to its "original state," using the date it was initially applied, and then potentially having it lifted once at least six months have passed—provided I reach out with a formal request at that time. Honestly, I don't see how that could be more than a few clicks of a mouse.

If this whole "drawing a line" bit and the question of "where do we go from here?" is somehow meant to imply a conversation broader than just this specific thread or this particular partial ban, I can only remind you that one of the primary reasons I received this ban in the first place was because of my thread, "where to go forum?".🙂.

I seem to recall that under the new rule of the organization, there were promises regarding responses being provided in the shortest possible timeframe. Well, sixteen hundred views later, am I allowed to inquire about a final decision on this matter?

I suppose enough time has passed for whatever behind-the-scenes diplomacy was happening to do its thing and establish an official stance. So, the question remains: will my account be restored to its original state in accordance with the rules?

Edit: I almost forgot—will that announced "press release" ever actually surface? (And just so we're clear, I’m addressing that anonymous deleted user: this isn't some "request" on my part, but rather a simple fact that the supermoderator announced its "filing," which presumably implies its publication). It would probably be useful to have some clarification on what happened with those previous partial bans—kudos to them for even mentioning it, I guess.
Misunderstanding in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Nicole James said:Byron, I’m going to lay out the facts one more time for you.

Fact 1: The decision was made to lift all partial bans across the board.
Fact 2: This call was finalized only after the new rules of the organization were officially published.
Fact 3: These partial bans are being removed from users sequentially—it isn't just happening to you.

You haven't received any special treatment here, and there is absolutely no reason for a partial ban to be applied to your account. If you're truly insisting on being banned, we might be able to accommodate that request—but let’s be clear: that wouldn't be "correcting" some perceived favoritism you claim to have had, it would simply be granting a ban upon request.

Could you please quote exactly where I claimed to have received any kind of special treatment? If you can't, may I suggest that you're simply making things up—there’s nothing offensive about saying that, since I don't see a third option here.

I am not comparing my treatment to anyone else's, nor am I claiming mine was special. All I wrote was that I believe my partial ban violated all the forum rules, that I don't think I'm alone in that opinion, and because of that, I won't accept any quiet acts of mercy, regardless of any other circumstances. No, thank you.

We all know you people can literally do anything—I simply wrote what I felt would be the only consistent move on your part (to avoid any insinuations regarding this "you"—since you were actually the first to use the word "you" when suggesting you might accommodate me)—so it’s frankly ridiculous to claim that a "ban upon request" is the only possible option. I was completely powerless when the partial ban was handed down (I was even referred to the appeal process via the PM—the very same one who issued that partial ban 🙄) — and by the way, I was just as powerless to debunk the blatant falsehood that some deleted post of mine "came back to haunt me," a lie that none of "you" bothered to deny—and now, I am just as powerless regarding your decision on what to call this ban, how long it will last, what "arguments" will be used to justify it, and which PDFs it will refer to.

It is precisely this feeling of powerlessness that has been creating an immense sense of discomfort while writing here for some time now.

I am trying to wrap my head around a technical, logical, or any kind of reason why it is so incredibly impossible to leave my partial ban exactly as it was (with all due respect to whoever decided to implement it and why). I just can't find one. Could you help me out?

Edit: Now I'm confused—a "public statement" has been announced; does "we lifted the partial bans, so whatever" count as a public statement, or will there actually be a few sentences written explaining "who, how, and why?"
