Thinking about applying for moderator? in Feedback & Suggestions ·

Actually, yeah. My bad.

Let me just correct myself there.

Look, if you want to become a moderator, you basically have to be the perfect user first. After that? Well, then you can act like the absolute last brainless hillbilly on the planet—just throwing out bans instead of actual arguments and permabanning anyone who dares to disagree with you. It’s why so many insecure losers and general idiots constantly crave that mod position. But let's be real—only a tiny handful actually end up staying in it.
Hey, shoutout to the small handful of people here who might actually be smart enough to recognize themselves. 😁

Honestly, plenty of mods just give up on it.
It’s not exactly a thankless job—well, actually, it's incredibly thankless, and the pay? Non-existent.

Personally, I think being a regular user is way better than being a mod.
As a mod, you're supposed to be this objective pillar of truth—you have to slog through threads you couldn't care less about just to make sure nobody's causing chaos, all while maintaining this perfect, saintly behavior...
As a regular user? You don't have to deal with any of that. Sure, you might get banned here and there if you push things too far, but it's usually just a couple of days before you're back to your old tricks. Plus, you can just flirt with the relatives of whoever banned you. Or maybe just hang out with Mexicans if that's more your speed.

Power is intoxicating. At least, that's how it looks to everyone at the bottom of the ladder.
But once you realize there's always someone above you—once you're getting squeezed from both sides—it stops looking like such a sweet gig[1].

[1] Well, maybe for you since you're a woman, I don't know.

Plus—and this is the big thing in my opinion—hardly any species actually see colors the way we do. Some things, like bees, can see way more than us, while most animals just see a narrow range of darker tones. I'm not sure if octopuses fall into that small group that sees color like humans.

Actually, cephalopods have great color vision—in some ways, their eyes might even be better than ours.
Birds also see a pretty similar color spectrum to humans; it’s not as rare as people think.

Talking about them being "prophetic" doesn't really make sense: for starters, there's zero evidence that an octopus has even the slightest clue what it's doing.

Since the ban was actually rescinded and replaced with something way more mild (though I guess you all could really use a quick lesson on what trolling actually means), I’m dying to know where you stand now. ☕

Luckily for Christianity, though, the cross doesn't represent death or destruction anymore. Not really.

The ban for trolling was totally earned—honestly, it was long overdue

So, what’s the plan moving forward regarding this issue?

@normall: Since you’re out here claiming I say I’m disgusted by believers in “every other post” on the Religion board, I’m calling your bluff. Go ahead—find me three posts from the last year where I actually said that.
It shouldn't be that hard if you're telling the truth. And if you can't find them, just admit you were lying.

Daniel Ward87 said:Yeah, I’d probably go along with adding some community standards to the mix too. 👍

Honestly, no matter what kind of "community standards" you try to set, they don't really matter here.
Look, regular users have basically zero power—at most, we can report a post or not, big deal. What actually matters are the moderator guidelines, because those need to be consistent since there isn't some massive legal code laying out exactly which offense gets which penalty. In this specific instance, the mods really need to explain why a relatively mild, general insult toward a religion gets hit with the same hammer as actual hate speech. I mean, you can open up pretty much any thread about, say, gay rights and find unsanctioned comments like "they're sick" (which is an insult because de facto they aren't) or "they should all be sent to Manhattan to breed."

Until you explain—like, in detail—why these double standards exist, no, I’m not going to be satisfied with an answer.
And frankly, I won't be satisfied with your moderation either, or how New Yorker handles the admin side of things.

Daniel Ward87 said:Don't take this personally, but I don't think any explanation is ever going to be good enough for you. A hammer and sickle was basically a gold mine for points back in the Soviet Union days—if Reddit had even existed then. I'm pretty sure you know that too, so making that comparison just doesn't make sense. Insulting American national symbols and emblems will definitely get you punished. A hammer and sickle or some old extremist emblem isn't an official national symbol. They might have been once, and back then they were probably protected, so mocking them could have gotten you sanctioned. You really have to look at things contextually, though I suspect you’ve known that for ages.

Second off, calling the cross, the Bible, the Quran, and everything else tied to religious customs "other crap" isn't some harmless little jab—it's blatant disrespect, which the admins confirmed by not pulling the ban.

Yeah, no explanation is going to work because you guys aren't actually trying to explain anything. Period.
The whole issue is that political symbols are symbols of people's beliefs, just like religious ones are. Just because there isn't a country out there using a five-pointed star or a hammer and sickle as its primary emblem doesn't mean the people who believe in those things don't exist. It's the same logic for, I don't know, a swastika, just like it is for the cross or the crescent moon.
If I can call symbols central to certain beliefs "crap"—and I'm positive I wouldn't get slapped with a ban for calling a swastika "crap"—but I can't do the same for others, then that's just straight-up discrimination.

Claiming something is okay just because the admins agree with it isn't an actual argument.

In today's society, religious beliefs get way too much special treatment anyway—Muslims get death threats over caricatures of Muhammad to the point where they attack embassies, and it's fascinating how few people see anything wrong with that. Here, someone gets hit with a 500-point penalty for one word that wasn't even that offensive—way beyond a typical insult, and even more than what often (doesn't) get handed out for hate speech laws. So, yeah, just another instance of religious views getting special protection above everyone else.
And meanwhile, believers go around insulting everyone else constantly and get away with nothing.

Have I mentioned how pathetic that is yet? Have I? Well, I guess I'll say it again: it's pure trash.
Blatant religious insults on Reddit in Feedback & Suggestions ·
I should probably mention that I know I’m allowed to report offensive posts. Only thing is—if my experience is anything to go by—the moderator criteria are totally messed up and biased.

Daniel Ward87 said:Look, man, what you just said isn't even true.

The ban happened because two different users twice referred to religious symbols and rituals as "bullsh*t"—it’s not about the word itself. I mean, that word doesn't mean anything until you put it in context, right? And in this specific case, the context was just straight-up insulting religious feelings.

If you feel like atheist sentiments are being offended, go ahead—you're free to report a post like that.

Why are religious feelings treated like they're above everything else?
If someone called a Confederate flag, a Hammer and Sickle, or anything like that "bullsh*t," would that post get 500 points?
No, obviously not. Not that I've seen, anyway.

I’m asking for a rational, actual explanation as to why religious feelings get protected over all other types of sentiment.

Honestly, this kind of behavior is more disgusting than having crosses in public institutions. And considering how certain instances of religious hate speech have been reported by me multiple times without any reaction from the mods (take Yivanmukt, for example—he's still posting away without any issues), it feels like believers can violate the Constitution and the law whenever they want, while any word spoken against them—even harmless mockery—gets punished more strictly than your typical debate on a political subreddit.

Pathetic.

It looks like we’ve got some hate speech laws being enforced here. At the very least.
The suggestion that believers should organize a referendum if they want to amend the Constitution of the United States—and even put crosses on the walls of government buildings—got slapped with a 500-point penalty just because the word “bullshit” was used. And apparently, that counts as “grossly offending religious sentiments,” according to them.
Meanwhile, unconstitutional, undemocratic, and borderline clerical-fascist ideas don't seem to trigger any penalties at all. I guess mocking atheists just for being in the minority doesn't count as offending "atheistic sentiments." Clearly.

I honestly can't stand this kind of discrimination on the forum, but as you can see, the admins—well, at least ZgSash—don't think there's anything wrong with it.

Pathetic.

Roger Barrett2 said:I think this just proves the whole "truth is in the eye of the beholder" thing. If I compare being gay to corruption—since both are sins in God's eyes—then suddenly I'm getting a ban? When Slade compares religious parents to genitals, it isn't an insult, it’s just... I don't know, understanding literary expression and how people actually talk.

Anyway, thanks for the reply!

It’s honestly fascinating how you can take a perfectly clear answer—basically saying even you wouldn't get banned for those words—and somehow twist it to mean the exact opposite.

Hardly anyone in this nation actually puts in any work,

Teachers are broke while the thieves are living large,
the smart people stay hidden while the idiots run the show.

The administration is nothing but a collection of freaks;
if you want to know about potato salad, go ask the Prime Minister.
The Secretary of Health has a face as red as a beet,
claiming he's fixing healthcare while he's busy shutting down hospitals.

People here love their neighbors like brothers,
yet they’re constantly at each other's throats in some fratricidal war.
While the crooks are busy lining their pockets everywhere they turn,
people are still getting worked up over old civil war politics.

But this whole mess is going to hit a wall pretty soon,
once the international courts finally step in.
Europe will eventually deal with this weird person,
and then they can take him exactly where he deserves to go.

ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!! Get this sent to the papers immediately. 👍

It’s pretty obvious you don't really get how American journalism works.
Let me break it down for you.
Let's say journalists aren't lurking on this forum. Some might—honestly, they use sites like this for leads and inspiration all the time—but political reporters usually find way too much noise in the signal here.
The next step is just someone copy-pasting this whole little poem, maybe even adding a line of their own, and then passing it along. Within a few rounds of sharing, it’ll land right in front of a reporter (at the latest, it'll reach me).
Then, all we have to do is wait for some writer to run out of things to say. Or, you know, run out of column ideas.

Is there anything more selfless than a farmer planting crops just to keep the whole damn country fed? Seriously, think about it! You’ve got these hardworking folks out in the heartland, sweating under the sun, putting everything they have into the soil just because it's what needs to be done for the nation. It's pure dedication, right? They aren't just doing it for themselves; they're doing it for all of us! Isn't that just incredible?
It’s honestly wild when you think about it, isn't it?
