Donald Trump, Al Capone, and Eric Adams running together? in Close to Politics ·
goldengull3 said:And really, what can one even expect from a government where the leader of the liberals is pushing for higher progressive tax rates on salaries, while social democrats and the Chamber of Commerce are standing united against it, all while the moderates want to overhaul the Fair Labor Standards Act just to make it easier to tear up collective bargaining agreements...

To top it off, the head of the parliamentary right carries a name associated with Mexicans, while one of the minority representatives goes by Horvat! 🙂

America is being run by an Antun-tun:
His mind works a little differently, I guess.
In his country, everything is upside down—
even the social democrats are standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the bosses.

I’ve been saying for years that in this country, the media are the only ones who actually seem to grasp how politics works, while the politicians should honestly just be left to watch sheep in the countryside. And even then, they'd probably lose the sheep!

It’s just like what Kurelić pointed out over a decade ago—we have this totally bizarre setup where the only political journalists worth their salt are actually degreed political scientists. And yet, it's the journalists who are calling all the shots in politics.

Everything is just going to hell…

So, yes. Even a smiley face can be an insult if that's how it's being used.

Basically, anything can be an insult if the person receiving the message takes it that way. It’s about intention—both from the sender and the receiver.

To give you an idea, look at that story Kishon told about when he traveled to Russia with a group from Israel. While they were sitting down to eat, some locals started shouting, "Jews! Jews!" at them.
When his host asked him if that was offensive, Kishon just replied, "Why would it be? We *are* Jews."

By the way, go check out some psychology studies on how much people actually hate smileys 🙂 and ☕ and just how insulting and passive-aggressive they can get.
Personally, I'd throw 👍 onto that list too.

She’s got absolutely zero business sticking her nose into stuff she hasn't spent a single second actually dealing with in her life, and then she has the nerve to sit there trash-talking everything when she hasn't moved an inch past her living room couch since high school graduation!

It honestly kills me because I just don't view these people as having even an ounce of competence when it comes to giving advice, and frankly, I’m pretty sure they know it too, which makes the whole situation feel like some kind of chaotic circus where the lunatics are running circles around everyone else. You just have to learn how to emotionally detach from the madness... stop expecting these types to actually change or figure out how to stop taking everything so damn personally. Like rapidhound90 said—if you can manage it, you just have to start looking at this entire mess through a lens of pure, dark comedy.

Honestly, that just makes it funnier.

When they start trashing things and acting all expert-like, you just pull a serious face and start asking questions. Don't even argue; just keep hitting them with question after question—until they hit that "I AM NORAD" level of frustration and their head basically explodes. ☕
Common stereotypes about marriage in America in Psychology ·
fadedskipper21 said:Here we go—another topic for the pile.
What truly gets under my skin is how much people today just default to stereotypes. The typical American script is pretty rigid: get married by 25, take out those massive mortgages, find a husband (mandatory), and have a few kids—ideally as many as possible.

If you don't fit that mold, you usually end up being the target of judgment or scorn; most people look at you as if you’re somehow "lesser" or fundamentally broken.

I’m 31 now, so according to this social blueprint, I should have been settled down ages ago. I recently ran into an old classmate who already has three kids, and he spent a full two hours lecturing me on why I’m not married and don't have children yet—asking things like, "So what's the issue?" or "How haven't you found anyone?" or even implying that nobody wants me.

The reality of my life isn't that something is missing—everyone who actually knows me can attest that everything is fine. It's just that I hate being tied down; I value my independence, I dislike feeling suffocated, and frankly, I enjoy living on my own. That's just who I am. And because of that, I'm treated like a total anomaly. I could have easily married my long-term boyfriend if I had wanted to, but I didn't, because he had no drive to work or build a life, so I realized he wasn't the one for me. I could have also just proven I was "wanted" by checking off all the boxes society forces on us—from family to the media—but I refused to force a marriage just to satisfy everyone else instead of myself. Now, I'm viewed as this "oddity" that no one will touch at 31, when the truth is I simply chose not to marry someone who wasn't a perfect match for me. I chose to be happy. Instead, I was expected to just marry anyone, produce a brood, and call it a day just to satisfy some arbitrary sense of justice. 🙂 🙂

Why are there so many Americans clinging to these stereotypes, while so few women seem to be original or do things simply because they decided to, rather than because their environment demanded it? Why aren't there more people breaking away from the norm—people who are genuinely put-together, living their lives without needing to parade a "perfect" domestic image for show?
It would be lovely if it were all sincere, but most of those people just open a Meta profile to rub it in everyone else's faces—showing off how they "made it," how perfect they are, and how flawlessly they've adhered to the status quo. Who knows if they even love their poor spouses? You can say that again.
Thanks.

Because if they didn't, it wouldn't be a stereotype in the first place. End of story. ☕

How should one actually handle people who make judging others their full-time job?
Ignoring them doesn't work—they just keep going and end up suffocating everyone around them (and I guess nobody is truly immune to constant criticism). Getting into an argument feels like a waste of time and energy, yet the situation just keeps escalating. Maybe patience isn't the answer either.😕

Don't put up with them, and it's definitely not smart to try and reason with them.
Just troll them instead—and remember you have two ears: one for listening and one for letting it all go right out the other side.
Plus, you might as well get some entertainment out of listening to another round of their mindless advice.

I know someone just like that.
She’ll give you advice on just about anything—it’s actually wild. After I broke up with my ex and started seeing my current girlfriend, she actually told me I’d be better off going back to the old one.
The woman weighs in on every single aspect of life, and not just with me, but with everyone she meets. She reminds me of my grandmother—she’s always trying to tell me how to pass my exams or how to handle a job interview or some work meeting, even though she studied something completely different from me fifty years ago and spent her entire life as a homemaker without ever working a real job. And she gives my grandfather tips on driving when she hasn't been behind the wheel in decades.
Honestly, I mostly just treat it like a comedy show.
redharbor9 said:What does a fetus even dream about? 😲

Why is this whole thread built on the assumption that there’s only one "normal" way to think just because that's how people who can hear or see process things? We developed verbal reasoning because that’s the context we grew up in. Just because the majority of us evolved this way doesn't mean it's the only way to exist. Is the struggle here actually just trying to put words to something that simply can't be verbalized? We don't even recognize other ways of thinking, yet we expect deaf people to describe their world to us. How would they even describe colors? How do you explain color to a blind person? It's not that they can't grasp the concept—it's that we don't have the vocabulary to describe it to them. To us, this stuff is second nature, but can we actually articulate it?

People spend way too much time looking for answers within their own little bubbles. You’ve gotta step outside your own perception if you ever want to understand how anyone else navigates the world...

It’s highly likely that dreams are also conditioned by how they perceive things. Dreaming probably serves to—well, let's say consolidate and organize all the data the brain picked up while awake. So, I guess it's reasonable to assume a fetus would dream about stuff related to the information their brain is actually gathering during its waking state.
Why is this whole thread drifting so far away from the assumption that "normalcy" and being "correct" are defined solely by those who can hear and see?

Well, maybe because seeing and hearing is just... normal? 🤷
I mean, strictly looking at the facts—no value judgments here—but normal is having all six senses.

Is verbal thinking just something WE developed because of our sense of hearing... and because we (the majority) evolved that way, we treat it as the only possible method and anything else is impossible? Or is the issue coming from trying to verbalize things that simply can't be put into words?

Deaf people—just like us hearing folks—think in symbols. The fact that our symbols happen to be mostly verbal is just a byproduct of the language we use.
There are even whistling languages out there; obviously, people who speak those think in them, too.
crimsontinker7 said:I’ve been wondering lately... what kind of dreams do blind people actually have? hmmm...

bluewalker33 said:I read somewhere that they don't even dream

You were reading total nonsense. ☕ Everyone dreams. Dreams aren't some byproduct of sight—they're driven by the entire complex nervous system.
I think I already mentioned this earlier regarding how people who lost their sight experience dual perception in dreams: those they knew when they could see, they see them as they remember them, whereas those they met after losing their sight, they perceive through whatever other senses they use to experience them.
People born blind only dream through their active senses, but yeah, everyone dreams.
redmarlin3 said:Yeah, well, I did a little digging on Google just now; it turns out not all white cats are deaf (they say it's around 80%), and if they have blue eyes, the odds go up significantly. But it’s not a hard rule—a white cat can definitely be deaf without having those blue eyes... 🤷

[Sorry for the off-topic tangent. 🙂]

Actually, I think I misspoke too; I meant to say those cats are basically destined to be deaf. At least, that’s how my high school biology teacher explained linked genes.
redmarlin3 said:But it’s actually pretty clever and funny once you realize the person behind it has some hearing issues. 🙂

[In case anyone missed this back-and-forth—all white cats are deaf. 😁 It's just in the genes. 😁]

Wait, aren't only blue-eyed white cats deaf? 🤔
stormyjackal46 said:Alright, if we’re calling this a Psychology thread... though honestly, it feels more like Philosophy...
Until recently, people actually argued—or rather, pushed the thesis—that those born deaf couldn't develop speech or complex thought. It led to this dark, fundamental question: were they even truly human? 😲😲

Someone on this forum recently threw out the idea that sign language isn't an actual language.
I mean, I feel like even after me rambling on about this at length, some people still don't quite get it.
placidranger said:In what sense is that an actual problem?

The alphabet basically follows pronunciation—graphemes more or less track phonemes. But sign language users can't really lean on that when they're reading.

It’s not that they have trouble reading per se, it’s more about the process of learning how to read.
Take me, for example—when I'm reading, I only "hear" the pronunciation if I slow down, really get into the dialogue and stuff like that. Otherwise, I read way faster than my internal voice could even articulate. So, yeah, speech and hearing aren't strictly necessary for reading itself.
Morgan Bishop4 said:Honestly, this is straight out of a Psychology textbook...

I’ve heard that people who are blind actually dream in scents, textures, and sounds, while those who lost their sight later on end up dreaming in full color and actually seeing things...

I mean, this feels less like Psychology and more like Cognitive Science... honestly, it could have easily stayed over in Natural Sciences.

People who lose their vision dream in really fascinating ways. For instance—do they dream about someone they knew before they went blind and someone they met after? Apparently, they see them differently: they’ll see the first person as they used to, while the second one is processed through these entirely new perceptions.

And when it comes to the Deaf community, sign language is still just... language. You don't need to hear something to understand it, which is pretty much what sign language proves, right?
If I remember correctly, the Brooklyn and Wernicke areas still kick in for Deaf individuals—it's just that instead of responding to audio, they respond to visual input. The brain is still processing language the same way.
The real struggle for many Deaf people is that written text doesn't always carry much weight on its own—words don't exactly "sound" like anything to them the way they do to us.

Distorting the names of fellow users or third parties in an offensive way is also against the rules.

All you have to do is actually read the rules carefully.

It’s not like you need to use logic—though it seems not everyone is equipped for such heavy lifting.

p.s.
I’d honestly love to post on a forum where people attack ideas instead of attacking the individual, but I haven't stumbled upon one like that yet.
That kind of standard isn't explicitly written in the rules, though it would certainly align with Jesus's teachings, which I personally think should be held in higher regard in a Catholic State.

p.p.s.
I'm guessing you didn't mean to, but you probably insulted both the moderators and the person you're referencing (dee) in your opening post by labeling them all as leftists.
If you've got the guts, go ahead and call dee a leftist straight to their face.
Honestly, I've grown somewhat accustomed to the insults around here.

Since you're running the Politics section, maybe try picking up the US Constitution for a second and realizing that America isn't a Catholic nation—it's a secular one.

People don't usually come out here complaining about their own standing; instead, they whine because someone else didn't get the recognition they deserved.
It gets especially ridiculous when they're pointing out a post that isn't even part of the current thread, or sometimes even on a completely different subforum!

Look, some garbage is always going to slip past the moderators.
Even the local police department—which you guys fund through your taxes—can't catch every single thief, rapist, or even the random vandal smashing streetlights in the middle of the night.

Thanks for that little reality check. 😢
It’s funny, really—people on this forum seem just as eager to report posts that break the rules as they are to report actual crimes they spot in their neighborhoods. A bunch of moderators have already complained about it, yet the users still act like reporting anything makes them a total snitch.🙄

Also, Vajluša is totally right— what a mess! I've spent days adding all these different little programs and plugins, but I'm still stuck with banners at the top and these awkward gaps on the screen whenever I load the Reddit homepage...

Element Hiding Helper is just a specific addon you grab right after installing AdBlock Plus. Just type its name into the addons installation window, install it, and you're good to go; you can pull it up through the AdBlock icon or just hit the Ctrl-Shift-K shortcut.
