Brian Edwards78 said:So they'll just take the processor to the repair shop, right? I don't get why you're making this such a big deal. 🤷

Wrooong...
They're gonna end up bringing everything in for repair because clearly, they can't figure out what's actually broken—that's why they're poking around on a forum in the first place.
If they start dragging every single component to the shop one by one (which really depends on how the shop operates), they're just gonna fall into a massive money pit of diagnostic fees. For example, Best Buy might take the CPU, run some tests, and then charge them, say, $17 just to tell them it works perfectly fine. Then they'll head over with the motherboard... Between the service fees and all that wasted time driving back and forth...

Brian Edwards78 said:I mean, you should be able to just swap out the graphics card—individual parts have warranties, right? 🤷

Come on, Michelle Alvarez8, don't be ridiculous: the graphics are built right into the processor. What, you think you can just slice off a piece of the CPU with a dull kitchen knife?

Parts definitely have warranties, but if a pro built the rig, they'll always try to claim the user messed up during assembly. It could be anything, really. Like, what if the factory pins on the socket were bent from the start? That's almost impossible to prove after the fact...
Need help with Wake-on-LAN in IT Support ·
First off, you’ve gotta sort out that IP address situation. Your router's getting a new one from the ISP every single day, so you definitely need a way to turn that dynamic IP into a static one. If you don't have another computer running on your local network, you might want to look into a Dyn service to handle it.
Next up is the whole headache of activating LogMeIn and figuring out what the current password is. I'm not an expert on it, but there should be a way to reset or grab that via email, right?
Another move could be setting up some kind of private tunnel using VNC, then you can just grab whatever info you need from there...

There are plenty of other tutorials out there like this: Wake-on-LAN

Personally, I’d probably grab the V300... if Corsair was selling it for a hundred bucks. Otherwise? No way.

Kids think it’s a big deal. It's just like how people think laptops are somehow superior to desktops. 🤷

Generally speaking, gaming laptops—like the ASUS ROG series—might have slightly better cooling than some standard models, but let's be real: they're still garbage. Seeing temperatures hit 195-212°F is just a typical Tuesday for them.

I highly doubt most people even think about this. It feels like everyone around me just assumes laptops are the "new desktops" and that old towers are basically obsolete.
People love to chat about it too: "It's all about miniaturization! Look, you can fit a whole computer right under your arm!"
And then they go and ditch a perfectly decent desktop to grab some cheap HP (yeah, look how far that legendary brand has fallen 🙂) on sale at Walmart for like $30. They plop it right where the old machine used to sit, save a few cents on the electric bill, and let it sit there for two years. They'll even get a fancy little tablet specifically designed to work with it.
The other extreme is kids dragging them everywhere because they absolutely have to be on Facebook. They're in bed, on the couch, under the covers, even in the bathroom... just eating crackers and spilling soda all over the keyboard.

Adam Moore3 said:True, but still. A laptop with an AMD Radeon R9 NVIDIA SLI setup 😵

Mmmmmm, yeah... ☕ total madness... right until everything goes south...
I'm looking at this IBM laptop, maybe 2-3 years old, absolute beast of a machine even by today's standards, and now it won't even boot up unless I go into the BIOS and disable two cores... It used to run fine with all four, but man, it was running hot enough to fry an egg. Reflowing didn't help, nothing did... I can't cool this thing down even with two desk fans blasting at it.

Honestly, I just don't get the whole high-end gaming laptop concept: you take a machine that should be a desktop, filled with "full-blooded" desktop components that aren't throttled by some low-power mode, and you try to cram it into a high-quality case with more mesh than metal. You slap 3 or 4 big fans on it, maybe an expensive air cooler or a liquid cooling setup, and you're constantly cleaning it and babysitting the temps...
But here? You squash all that onto one or two printed circuit boards, shove them into a shallow plastic box with some symbolic ventilation holes, and hide a tiny little turbine behind them that's desperately trying to blow out the boiling air...
And let's talk about the ergonomics—the touchpad and those fancy chiclet keyboards aren't exactly built for peak gaming performance. The screen can only be so big; it’ll never beat a standalone monitor. Fixing one of these things would be harder than a NASA engineer repairing something on the ISS using a Soyuz capsule, mostly because you won't find anyone willing to mess with it...

What is it about human nature that drives someone toward... sorry, towards a Dell?
What's the catch?
Is it just having the biggest one? (the laptop, obviously...)
Or is it being easy to carry around, so you can use those 10 minutes of battery life to show everyone how much money you can throw away?
Enlighten me...
stormybadger8 said:Aside from the tiny detail that the Ferrari is a better car than the Red Bull...
You're forgetting the fact that Kimi is in a complete mess right now and that Ferrari is realistically the second strongest team on the grid 😁

...and then the squirrel wrapped up the chocolate...
Red Bull is both better and more broken than this version of Ferrari, which is totally screwed, and they'll stay that way as long as this crew of incompetents keeps messing around at Scuderia.
Once they actually come up with a new Jean Todt, steal some Ross Brawn substitute from someone like Benetton, and finally find a relatively young, gritty driver who's hungry for blood and glory instead of just a paycheck, maybe they'll be something... until then, just call it quits.
It seems like Ferrari's destiny is to have these cyclical bursts of dominance every few years when the stars align, but in between, they're just Formula 1 folklore. Maybe that's for the best—Ferrari is synonymous with Formula 1. They have their moments, punctuated by brief flashes of brilliance so the sport doesn't become a private playground.
People cheer for them whether Jean Alesi, Didier Tambay, or Gerhard Alboreto is behind the wheel; it’s not even about driving skill anymore, it’s pure Formula 1 iconography.

Red Bull has definitely shattered the myth of charismatic Formula 1 teams. These massive corporations with zero connection to actual car culture just throw money around and buy whatever they want (except maybe Toyota, obviously!), including breeding their own drivers in a private incubator. It's like they're growing a hybrid corn crop: one year they want some young guy with specific traits, the next it's some Latino kid...

So, honestly, starting debates like "is Red Bull better than Ferrari?" is just pointless. I'm down for Ferrari vs Lotus, vs Williams, vs McLaren, or even Mercedes, but Red Bull? No thanks. At this rate, they'll probably pivot to an Air race, a submarine race, or seeing who hits Mars first—anything they can milk for marketing. They'll leave a mark on Formula 1, sure, but for true automotive enthusiasts, they're about as relevant as Lella Lombardi.
stormybadger8 said:It’s true that Ricciardo is better...
But it’s also a fact that Vettel is having his worst Formula 1 season ever, driving a race with absolutely trashed tactics,
and even in a season this bad and a race this messy, he still managed to outdrive the Maestro at the end of the day.🤣

So yeah, Vettel's absolute worst is still better than the Maestro's best...
But hey, you guys just keep telling yourselves that.🙂

Vettel is having a rough season, but is it his absolute worst? Who knows, it's still too early in his career to call it. Personally? I think we’re looking at a downward spiral with no brakes in sight...

In my opinion, given the gear he was working with, he drove that race worse than Alonso did. @darkmarlin16/">@@darkmarlin16's chart shows it clearly: the guy defended his starting spot. Actually, he didn't just defend it—he fought tooth and nail to get it back.
The Maestro definitely had better days, but the reality is he’s squeezing everything he can out of what he's got right now, and it’s hard to ask for more. He’s driving a fancy Ford built out of cheap knock-off parts, with a pit crew of happy Italians—you won't find a worse combo in all of space. Yesterday, despite his starting position and that penalty... he was actually competitive with Vettel. Sure, looking at the final results, both of them might be hiding behind Bottas, but purely in terms of driving, their battle was the highlight of the race. It was a masterclass: the attacks, the defensive lines, using the ERS, the braking, the sheer grit... I used to watch kids clashing on the grid every single race; nowadays, you wait half a season for one real fight like that...
Honestly, I don't care who cruises onto the podium, how many points they have, or how many titles they've grabbed because their car was just superior.
I watch races to see driving, overtakes, people fighting back, and driver reactions—not to see how much money some energy drink manufacturer can pull from a bank or some semi-private dynasty.

Formula 1 has naturally turned into a controlled war between brands, where the drivers are basically just luggage: watch the fuel, watch the tires, watch the engine, feed the animals, and don't touch anything. Rosberg got screwed because he didn't have a full keyboard on his steering wheel for a Ctrl-Alt-Del, and his reset button is under the hood. Vettel is just a top-tier corporate product—a perfect example of how a great PR department can boost the value of an average product.

For me, Alonso showed way more skill than Vettel yesterday. Even if this keeps happening until the end of the season and Vettel finishes ahead of him every single race, I truly don't care.
What's the best Wi-Fi card to buy? in Desktops ·
Honestly, at this point, it’s basically like buying printer ink—everyone thinks their own gear is the absolute best
Like these guys: TP-Link

You probably don't even need anything fancy. Prices jump around depending on which retailer you hit up, but let's be real, this stuff is pretty mature tech by now. Personally, I’m all about those models with external antennas. Why? Because they actually pick up a signal, and if things get hairy, you can always swap in a beefier antenna or just use an extension cable to find a better spot.
If you’re running a desktop, just plug it into the back and forget about it. Does it feel a bit awkward reaching behind the tower? Sure. But you need that extra breathing room for cooling anyway, right?

The only real headache would be if your wall was packed with rebar like it's a vault at Chase Bank, or if it's stuffed with plumbing. Since I highly doubt you're keeping your PC in the bathroom, you should be good to go...
Mixing different brands of RAM. in Desktops ·
It might work, or it might not—it’s honestly a hit or miss every single time. Honestly, you're way better off getting it from a buddy. That way, everything stays low-stress: you test it out, see if it sticks, and if it doesn't? No big deal, you just settle up.
Don't sweat the amount when it comes to wins; they don't have some hard physical limit at 4GB. They just can't address all that memory, so they end up playing around with about 3.3GB. If you want to actually use the full capacity, you'll need to go 64-bit, though 32-bit still gets the job done.
How do I print at actual size? in IT Support ·
If you’re using Adobe Acrobat Reader, just head over to the Print menu and take a look at the settings under "Page Sizing & Handling." You can mess around with the "Actual Size" option or try setting a custom scale to 100%. That should give you the exact dimensions intended by whoever coded the PDF.
For me, it usually defaults to about 93-94% scaling, but honestly, I don't really care, so I just leave it alone...
VGA Cable in IT Support ·
In the first screenshot, you've got your Dell monitor correctly selected above the resolution settings, but in the second one, it's defaulted to that generic Plug and Play driver from Wins. Just switch it over to your actual monitor manually.
It sounds like you're using a cable with some missing pins—specifically the ones meant to send data about the monitor type back to the PC. It’s technically fine under those old VGA standards, but you'll just have to handle the monitor settings yourself...
Assumption is the mother of all screw-ups... pardon my French...
And culture? I once asked a piece of malware to just leave me alone, for crying out loud...
The issue is you’re offering a wounded soldier a Tylenol when he actually needs surgery. You need real protection so this doesn't happen in the first place. When there's a problem, you find the root cause instead of just masking the symptoms. That garbage trashing your computer needs to be wiped out, not ignored while we pretend everything is fine...
Wait, I just realized my massive screw-up in the last post. I thought I was looking at a B85... but seriously, do I actually need to jump up to a 9 series chipset for these newer Intel chips?
Or, if you want to stay current, just jump on the LGA 1150 platform. Grab an Intel Core i5-4460 and pair it with something like a Gigabyte B75-HD3. That way, you're actually keeping up with what's trending in the Intel lineup right now.
Unfortunately, they don't really push those P-series chips without integrated graphics in the newer lineups anymore. But with the latest Haswell revision, they actually worked on the thermals—probably swapped out the thermal paste under the heatsink or something—so it doesn't run nearly as hot, regardless of the TDP. It's much more consistent.
That bumps the price up by about $67
How to extend my Wi-Fi range? in IT Support ·
ruggedcyclist7 said:The question is still a bit fuzzy... do you actually have a wireless router at home that you're trying to connect to?

And what's the end goal here? What exactly are you trying to achieve with the signal extension...

I don't get why this is confusing. Either the guy is stealing Wi-Fi or he's just piggybacking on someone else's connection...
Where to find the best deals on SDHC cards? in Desktops ·
I'm not even sure if they even make these in an 8GB format anymore. Is it even worth hunting down such a tiny card when they end up being pricier than the standard ones?
Take this 32GB one, for example.
$133

compared to this 16GB version.
$126

It’s pretty obvious that the built-in Wi-Fi is where the real cost is, not the actual storage. I mean, why wouldn't you just grab double the capacity for basically pennies more?
Resolution issues! in Desktops ·
So, what’s the plan then? The native resolution is 1280x1024, so you aren't going any higher than that. You could always slap in a beefier graphics card to match the monitor's actual specs, but physically, it just won't go past the native limit, period.
Network card speeds? in Desktops ·
Exactly. So you’re basically just keeping the old power supply... from what I've seen, those pre-built brand PCs always came with "just enough" power, like a measly 250W. Honestly, I'd swap that thing out immediately—not even because of the wattage, but just because of its age. And the hard drive? If you're even considering keeping it, it's laughably small by today's standards, so that’s going in the trash too. At this point, all you're really saving is the metal case. Since I'm guessing it's some kind of small form factor build, who knows if a new motherboard will even fit inside anyway...
Summary?
Network card speeds? in Desktops ·
As long as all the juicy details are kept under wraps like some "Top Secret Government Classified" file, you're never gonna get a helpful answer...

If you actually want some help, at least try to find out which processor, motherboard, or drive we're dealing with so we can figure out what’s worth saving and what’s trash... obviously, that's just basic advice, but saying "Asus star 8 years" is about as useful as posting an ad that says "selling a car from 8 years ago"...
Though, honestly, anyone with good intentions can tell you right now: don't waste a single cent upgrading a rig that old... even if you could salvage parts, trying to add anything new to an 8-year-old machine is a massive headache. You'll just be waiting for some ancient component to kick the bucket and take your new parts down with it. It's basically throwing money away and making a mountain of compromises just to keep things running...

Think back—eight years ago, what was the big deal? It was the Pentium 4 era and that jump to Core2Duo ??? Everything is definitely due for a total replacement by now...
