Opening a minor's checking and savings account in Banking, Insurance & Loans ·
dustyranger66 said:Hey everyone, hope you're all doing well.
I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a quick question—can I transfer money to a friend living over in Los Angeles into their Bank of America checking account if I'm not quite eighteen yet? I'm currently seventeen and a few months, so I wasn't sure if that would trigger any red flags or issues, and whether I'd actually need to show an ID at all, seeing as I don't have a driver's license on me, just my passport.

Of course you can. Just bring your passport, head down to the bank, and make the deposit. You'll just sign the slip and you're done. 😁
Setting up a non-resident business account in Banking, Insurance & Loans ·
Jerry Williams41 said:Since my accounting department seems completely clueless, I’m checking here to see if any bankers are lurking who might actually have an answer. So, here it is:

It honestly feels like I’ve hit a brick wall trying to get clear information. I’ve been calling the IRS—well, the equivalent tax authorities—and they charge me almost $2.25 just to sit on hold while the line stays busy, my accountant is stumped, and some lady at the bank hasn't gotten back to me after seven days despite promising she’d check every single time I call... plus, other banks don't seem to know the first thing about accounting regulations.

Look, I am more than willing to pay for actual, useful information from anyone who can help me out.

Here is the situation. I’ve signed a representation agreement in the States for a German company. Most of our sales happen online. Payments come in via credit card, PayPal, or bank transfer. Since direct wire transfers to Germany are prohibitively expensive, the goal is to open a US-based account where customers can pay directly in dollars, and then once a month, I’ll just forward the total to the manufacturer and pay myself my commission. The goods would be shipped by mail straight from Germany, and the customer would receive an invoice in dollars sent directly from the manufacturer/seller.

The Germans don't really care what kind of US account we use; they are fine with me collecting payments on their behalf ("in trust") using my own account (I have an LLC, so any business account should work) and marking those incoming funds as "transfers." That logic holds up for them, but I have no idea how it works under American regulations. The closest solution I’ve stumbled upon is a non-resident account, which is the one that lady at the bank is taking an eternity to investigate. So, the question is, does using a non-resident account satisfy the requirements for the payment structure I described above?

Does anyone have any advice? Feel free to DM me. Like I said, I'm not looking for hand-outs; I am happy to pay for a real solution.

As a local, you can't really open a non-resident account—the Germans would have to come here themselves. I mean, maybe you could, but the paperwork is a nightmare and the upfront costs for all that are a total money pit. If you already have an LLC, that's a good starting point. Basically, the Germans come over and open a non-resident account at a bank. They can choose to make you the authorized person for transactions on that account, or they might not. You could collect the customers' money into your LLC account "in trust" and then, once a week or once a month, make a loan transfer to their non-resident account. The fees aren't even that bad, at least not where I work. Along with the non-resident account, the Germans can set up online banking, letting funds accumulate there, and then maybe once a month, send a wire from that account to their account in Germany. Or they could just do it once a year, depending on whether the fees satisfy them as business people.

Is it actually possible to just leave the account sitting empty, then transfer funds whenever I need to buy something? Since I don't have a steady paycheck, I just want something for online shopping or when I'm out of the country.

Of course you can. When you need to pay for something, just hit up the bank, deposit the cash (honestly, always throw in a little extra to cover potential fees), and you're good to go!

So, basically, I found a car that I’m seriously considering buying... but there's a catch. The guy is based over in England, and I made it crystal clear right off the bat that there is absolutely no way I'm buying this thing until I see it in person. He suggested he could drive the car over here to the States, but now he's hesitating—he doesn't want to make the trek across the Atlantic unless he's 100% certain I'm actually going to pull the trigger..
He pitched me this idea involving a payment via Western Union, and honestly, I'm staring at my screen wondering just how sketchy this sounds..

Here is exactly what he sent: "You must make the payment through Western Union on your father or mother name and any address of London , and send me the scanned paper from western union ,you change the name and address in my name after meet you in America ,In this way i`ll be sure that you`ll be in America and that you`ll buy the car....
And you`ll be sure that I`LL NOT BE ABLE TO PICK UP THE MONEY FROM WESTERN UNION because the money is not on my name and my address .
i will wait your email"

Can someone who actually knows how this stuff works please weigh in? I'd really appreciate the help.. thanks a million.

First off, I'm not even sure you can do it that way. Second, can you even change the sender's name and info once the money is sent? Third, the fees for using WU to buy a car would be insane, and fourth, he won't be able to touch the cash anyway unless you send him the transfer number after you pay.

Bottom line, don't play games like this. If you both feel pretty much set on the deal, just find a better way to handle the transaction.

CORRECTION: You can't just swap out the recipient's name once the money is gone.
ADDITION: If the car costs more than $3,000, just forget it, because there are limits on sending money via WU outside the US$6.75.

I guess you both could probably just head to JPMorgan Chase. Word on the street is they have some kind of deal with foreign banks or whatever, so the fees shouldn't be too crazy and you might even get the cash right then and there. At least, that’s what I’ve heard through the grapevine. 🤷

Hypocrisy is probably the ugliest trait a person can have. Some people would actually kill for a tiny bit of power or authority.
It’s true what they say: give a man power and you'll see who he really is.
Look, you stepped down from the mod team, fine. But you can still make this place better just by posting like a regular user.
If I were you, I wouldn't leave entirely.
I’d take a short break, sure, but I wouldn't quit.
Just think about it.
P.S. Give my wife my best.😉

First off, calling them "ex-colleagues"... whatever. I don't have anything against the crew over in real politics—the moderators, I mean. I get why they thought staying quiet was the move. Sometimes silence really is golden. It just sucks that some people wait until everything is already over before they finally speak up and say what they actually think.
I’m not picking sides with any of the mods (actually, scratch that, there's one... okay, two!) and I don't care who sides with me, as long as they're being real. They don't even have to be polite; hell, I haven't been polite half the time myself. I'm just looking for a shred of honesty, the kind I try to put out there, but I guess they just don't have it in them. Not that it matters.

Thanks for the well wishes. Of course, I'll pass them along. 😉

Linda Rodriguez38 said:Then why did you even agree to be a moderator? You knew how things worked...

Look, I volunteered to be a mod only because I saw how much of a mess the Politics sub was and I wanted to fix things.
From day one, I’ve been fighting with the admin team. When I first started, I actually tried to bring some changes to the table—I made suggestions, I put in the work. But back then, the admins just thought I didn't have enough experience. Every single time I tried, I got the exact same brush-off. That was until someone else finally said the exact same thing I had been shouting for months about what needed to change in real politics. I just pointed out that maybe, finally, the administration would see reason and let us actually do our jobs properly on this site. But whatever. The point is, I was the one fighting the fight while everyone else just stood on the sidelines waiting to see what the higher-ups would decide. I mean, seriously, if the admin team actually knew what they were doing with their authority over a site like Reddit, they should be listening to the people actually managing the subreddits. Instead, I just got told, "There goes Johnny again, always trying to take charge." 🤦 So now you think I'd actually want to moderate...? Yeah, thanks, but no thanks. After a pretty heated blowout with the old admin crew, I quit and just became a regular user again.

Look... I get it. Someone crossed a line. But honestly? That person can't change who you are, no matter how hard they try. You know yourself. You know what you stand for. If someone's getting under your skin, just ignore them and move on. It's that simple. They're just one person. One.

Just take a few days to clear your head. 🙂

There’s just no help coming anymore, period! Believe me on that one. ☕
Look, nobody can change who I am. But when someone tries to stifle you—when they try to mold you into some "perfect" version of themselves just so you'll bow down and follow them blindly because they think they’re always right? That’s what pisses me off. Maybe I can ignore it, maybe you can too, but he isn't ignoring me. That’s the part that gets under my skin, and honestly, it's not even worth fighting anymore. There are so many people on Reddit who will kiss anyone's ass just to stay in the loop, or defend some idiot's reaction just to feel included. Not me. I've dealt with enough people in my life who tried to fix me; some eventually just gave up. I don't need some "Eye in the Sky" hovering over every single thing I post or every thread I start, waiting to "correct" things to fit their own agenda. I spoke up the first time, and nothing happened. I spoke up a second time, still nothing. I finally lost it and called him out—which, okay, maybe wasn't even worth his time—but he didn't act like the tough guy he pretends to be. Instead, he just slapped me with a ban like he would anyone else. He knew that if he actually tried to change me, it would hurt more. So he just deleted the thread, wiped everything that should have been settled ages ago, and now he thinks he's off the hook. He acts like I'm just some crazy person throwing tantrums for no reason, like there isn't a real point to any of this.
Look, I know I’ve rubbed some people the wrong way acting as a moderator. I get it. I know I’ve probably been way too harsh with my comments toward the Board of Trustees sometimes, but hey, that’s just who I am. At least I'm being real. I don't own Reddit, and I’m certainly never going to try and rewrite my personality just to fit in with this place or to please some moderator, no matter how much authority they think they have. I’ve been in those shoes before, and I never abused the power. ☕

Yeah, but here they’re trying to change me. I don't care if everything else around me is shifting around in some weird order, but I’m not standing in line to be changed. I’m not an object. I’m not some tool for someone else to vent their tantrums on. Some people choose to stay silent and just take it, but I won't.

Unfortunately, this stuff happens in real life too, so why wouldn't it happen here in the digital world? Don't take it to heart...

Yeah, but you actually get me and my "outbursts." If I get banned, it's because I earned it, thank God. I'm a regular user and I play by all the rules set here. I'm not out here causing chaos or treating my profile like some private diary. He doesn't get it, and he never will.

And let's be clear, that profile meant something to me. It had its ups and downs, good times and bad, but I was always there—sometimes as the support, sometimes as the agitator. It was good while it lasted. You know as well as I do that Reddit is a place where anyone can be whoever they want. People pretend, they act, they present themselves however they please. You can't really know someone until you meet them in real life. I never faked it. I never went against who I am; I've always been myself. And I'm staying that way. For my own sake, mostly. I'll stay true to myself, even though, you know, I can be pretty emotional sometimes and get too attached to a post. Some people get that. Others don't. I can't change who I am fundamentally just because I'm one person in real life and Ronald Allen on Reddit. I'm always the same guy.

There’s nothing for me to think about, believe me. I said it, and I meant it, that I'm gonna miss you and your subreddit. Because, I mean, I actually had the patience for all kinds of questions, and I could always learn something new. But when you get patronized by someone you thought was totally fine—someone you assumed could actually be a decent person or even a friend—that’s not it. Not at all. I can't stand people who act like they're good souls, but really they're just looking for ways to suck up and "sell" themselves, all for some clout. And they don't get anything from that fame. They don't even realize they'll never actually have it.
I used to have the energy for "politicians" too; of course, they labeled me both left and right, called me a communist and a fascist, but at least I knew what I earned those labels for. This? This makes zero sense to me. And I tried opening this thread on a certain subreddit last night. It was immediately moved to where the moderator thought—based on his own personal whim—it should go. And I'd bet anything, right now, that he didn't even read the post to the end; he just moved it. And at the end of the thread, it clearly stated I was greeting everyone in the whole subreddit, not just one specific thread. Whatever. I have smarter, more important things to deal with in life. I definitely don't need to deal with this. ☕

Sophia Young said:I suggest John for moderator on the rec committee...

Thanks a lot, but I'm not going to suck up to anyone, nor am I taking anyone's "charity." Especially not after how and why I left. And it wasn't pretty. Wasn't pleasant at all. Even though the administration back then thought I was always "running ahead of the curve" with ideas that were never right or never on time. But when the moment came to actually fix things, those topics suddenly became popular—but only as administration ideas. And of course, they were accepted. Because, hey, what does some regular Ronald Allen know, coming into a moderator position through "connections"... 🤦 Sometimes I regret ever volunteering to moderate The New York Times section. Even though I had ideas and solutions, everything just fell on deaf ears. And today, now that I'm not a moderator, it hurts to see how some people here "worship" the power they've been given, when in reality, they're terrified; they're afraid to be real human beings when it matters most.

Nobody made me mad; I just realized some things, just facts I can't ignore, no matter how much people think I shouldn't or don't need to. I'm not the type to wear a mask; either I'm myself, or I'm nothing. And I definitely don't want to be nothing.
Hey everyone... in Feedback & Suggestions ·
...so, since nothing went down last night, let's try this again. Maybe a little more gracefully and civilized this time. 🙄
I mean, I already told everyone I was stepping away for at least a year, and somehow I guess I just gave in to my weaker side and came back, but this time I’m actually being serious. 🥳

Basically, since I'm spending less and less time on Reddit, I don't really have that itch to log on every single day to hang out anymore. I don't want to be a "burden" to anyone. I don't want people nitpicking every word I say, or squinting through a magnifying glass at every post just to find something to twist to satisfy their own weird, petty little agendas. 🤷

It's not like anyone here has a grudge against me, far from it. I hope that feeling is mutual, though I wouldn't bet everything on certain people, but whatever. There are some great crews here; you guys are all dear to me insofar as I know you through a keyboard. I've met some in real life (and I hope to meet others!), and there are some I honestly regret meeting. Because, let's face it, some people are only here to teach you something. And if you're smart enough, you'll actually learn it. I was. Honestly, I just repeated the material—a lesson I learned a long time ago but, well, I guess I forgot it for a bit. And I'm glad I had to take the "makeup exam." You shouldn't be allowed to forget lessons like these. 🧐

I've realized everything has kind of fallen apart. From the site itself and the threads that just loop endlessly, to the people hanging out here hoping for a distraction from daily life, all the way up to the moderators who exist just to do their jobs the best they can. Or at least, they think they do. They're so convinced; if you showed them a plum and told them it's a plum, they'd probably say, "No, that's a watermelon." Why? "Because I said so, and I'm a moderator, so I know." 🤦

I'm going to stay in touch with some of you (at least I'll try). I'll miss the banter in the Chat men threads, and I won't miss acting all smug toward provocateurs only to be my usual self the next day. I won't be able to try helping the Student Government crew with all the banking knowledge I've picked up over the years... but oh well. However Reddit lived before me, it'll live after me. I don't know for how long, but it will. 🙂

I tried my hand at moderation too—that blue badge that gives you the freedom to suspend or ban people who drive you absolutely insane with their posts. Dammit, I was one of those people getting banned. But looking back and remembering the actual rules, my suspensions were always "by the book." More like things I "had" to do rather than things I earned. But fine. I never complained or yelled at anyone about them. Vice versa, they'd say. You get what you give. But I've hit a wall, a wall made of a single entity—someone who doesn't "approve" of me as a member of Reddit and thinks life would be better if I'd never shown up here. It's not about asking him personally, but I just don't have the energy or the time to waste my strength on a being that thinks it's superior. Someone acting like a big shot when they're actually nothing. I've outgrown people like that, thank God, and I just needed a reminder of how to spot an "entity" and what to do once you recognize one. 🙂

Sending my best to all of you. I truly wish you a pleasant stay on Reddit, however long it lasts. 👋

If you did an online transfer through your banking app, it should clear in maybe two or three hours. But, if you used a standard check or a money order, it probably won't show up until Monday, since banks don't process those kinds of things over the weekend.

Kimberly Nguyen said:I honestly couldn't disagree more with that take... Look, if your employer is actually depositing your paycheck on time and everything is above board, the bank's own automated system handles your overdraft limit. It isn't some special privilege tied to whether you're a permanent employee or just working a contract gig... It all hinges on one thing: having a clean, reliable relationship with the bank, much like how a major corporation manages its accounts at an institution like JP Morgan Chase

Look, the reality sucks, but it's true. More and more banks—especially now with this recession hanging over our heads and everyone freaking out about job security—are obsessively checking whether you're on a contract or a permanent position.
