I haven't seen this movie yet, but the plot sounds a lot like the Brief Candle episode from "Stargate SG-1". 🤔
The Lake House in Movies ·
It’s a charming concept, though the movie itself feels a bit nonsensical. Technically, they could have started their relationship back in 2004 right after she broke up with her boyfriend and rented The Lake House. 🤷

But then again, we wouldn't have a movie to watch. 😁
The Notebook (2012) in Movies ·
A charming film. 🙂

A lovely love story. 🙂
Groundhog Day (2013) in Movies ·
I watched this movie quite a while ago, but I remember it being a truly charming film. 🙂

Does this count as a haiku, or what?

It does not qualify. 🙂

Memnon, if you haven't checked in here for this many days just to see if you were banned, then you aren't an addict and don't need a ban. 😁

By changing a password to something impossible to memorize, you can simultaneously switch the associated email address to a non-existent one or an old, deleted account that's no longer accessible. This effectively locks the profile entirely. Since it isn't an official ban, if that person ever decides to return to the forum, they can just create a new profile and start posting again without any issues at all. 🙂

Whatever. I don't really care if certain people decide to stop hanging out on the forums. If they want to move on and go do stuff that actually makes them happy, more power to them. It’s pretty obvious that when Memnon is constantly looking for the exit, it just brings the whole vibe of the community down. ☕

Should we look for a partial for the Amtrak lines too?🤔 🤣

Memnon, don't listen to these addicts. 🙂

Just do whatever you feel is best for you. 🙂

It is much better to request partial access to the subforums that bother you, irritate you, or consume too much of your time, while keeping the ones that remain interesting and easygoing. 🙂

Donna White50 said:It makes sense, really—we've drifted so far from our true nature that being at peace, unburdened, or selfless isn't even seen as "normal" in this modern madness we call life.
Massive amounts of people are popping antidepressants, feeling totally desperate, frustrated, insecure, lonely, and empty... yet nobody seems to have the guts to actually ask why...

People simply follow the crowd and chase trends instead of thinking for themselves, which inevitably leaves them feeling frustrated and unfulfilled.

Here is a banal example:

During Leto, everyone complains about being exhausted and claims they "have" to go on vacation. I always ask: "Why do you have to? Is there some legal requirement to fly abroad, switch transportation, stay in hotels, sightsee, swim, or surf in this heat? If you are tired, why not just stay home and sleep?" They look at me like I just landed on Mars.😁 They feel they "must" do it because "that's what everyone does" and "that's how it works."

How can someone like that ever be truly satisfied with themselves or their life?

Most people are just like that... quite simply, they don't think.

In my view—and I say this after looking at the logistics—moving everything over shouldn't be much of an issue.

Nobody joins an empty Reddit community, much like nobody signs up for a brand-new dating app. That's why most of those platforms launch with fake profiles or bots to simulate activity and attract actual users.

When I was looking for new communities to join, I always checked the user count and engagement levels, specifically within the subreddits that caught my eye. If there isn't regular posting from multiple users, it simply means the community is dead and won't interest anyone new.

Building a community from scratch with just a few hundred regulars and trying to make it appealing to newcomers is an incredibly difficult task.

In this day and age, everything comes down to clicks. Just look at how newspapers craft headlines today just to bait people into clicking. It’s the same principle here. Even if a thread is titled 'Buddhism,' it will likely grab the attention of someone browsing the web. It doesn't matter if the topic is massive, old, or largely inactive—it still fulfills its purpose by generating that click.

Casey Bennett said:Honestly, we could just lock this entire site down—set it to read-only so the archives stay up, but nobody can post anything new—and then just migrate all the major subreddits and their most vital threads over to a brand-new platform.
It would be a massive undertaking, I'm sure, but I suspect the moderation team would jump at the chance if someone actually had the guts to pull the trigger. We just need someone to take the first step, and we all know exactly who that needs to be.

Archiving this site—similar to how the old IMF website remained accessible for reading—and launching a fresh one with current topics would be the cleanest approach, though I suspect there are downsides to consider.

This community is substantial, boasting numerous threads, sub-forums, and registered users, which gives the impression of high activity. Even if new members are scarce and some sections haven't seen a new thread in months, the sheer volume of historical posts from long-time contributors remains impressive.

A brand-new site would start quite small, with very few members and limited discussion. In this day and age, it is difficult for a general interest forum like ours to gain traction and grow again.

Therefore, I don't believe it would be worth the effort...

Charles Mitchell3 said:Who’s actually going to revolt? The crowd stuck in the 19th century because they love old forums? Honestly, the fewer people like that, the better.

That represents the majority. 😕 😁

I haven't visited The New York Times forums in quite some time, but that specific layout offers so many great features. You can upload images directly from your computer, resize them within a post, choose from a huge variety of emoticons, use different fonts and colors, search easily, embed GIFs and videos from various sites, give likes, and update profile statuses...

I once used a British forum dedicated mostly to movies and TV shows with that exact same design, and it was excellent. They even allowed you to completely delete your profile while keeping your posts intact. So, the design certainly allows for those kinds of options.

Technology has truly advanced. Even though a modern, polished design won't bring back the golden age of message boards—since their peak is long behind us—they are definitely much more user-friendly and engaging now. However, I suspect the majority of users on this platform aren't actually fans of innovation; they’d prefer everything stay exactly as it is, as long as it functions. 😁

There is also this widespread belief that the forum is filled with "treasures," where threads from 15 or 20 years ago with over 300 pages are treated as vital artifacts that must be preserved and regularly bumped up. But realistically, who is actually reading them? 🤷 Forums aren't libraries or archives; they are living discussions involving people who are active right now. On Reddit, threads are locked after six months, and if interest resurfaces later, new ones can simply be started on the same topic. Old threads are often just cluttered with posts from users who left years ago and outdated information...

If there were any real openness to progress and new features, this site would have been upgraded and redesigned long ago, but that hasn't happened. So, this is just how it is. 🤷 We enjoy ourselves while it works, and when it eventually fades, we move on. 😁
Sarah Ross21 said:@VK, she was being blunt, but she was right. She doesn't have time for trivialities; she’s focused on what actually matters to her. And if she wants to prioritize those things, she has the time and the money to do it. 🙂 You have to learn to look after yourself and handle your own mess instead of worrying about everyone else's.

@Ench, remember when people actually had some tact? Back when you wouldn't brag about your high-flying career to someone who just lost their job, or talk about your kids when you knew the other person was struggling to make ends meet. It wasn't polite to rub it in.

That decency is dead. Now, everyone just talks about themselves, totally oblivious to how they come across. And this constant whining about money has become a joke. When I'm broke, it means I can't even afford a decent pair of shoes. But when certain people say they're "short on cash," it just means they're deciding between a penthouse or a condo in Malibu. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve picked up the tab for people claiming to be struggling, only to watch them buy luxury real estate a month later.

p.s.
I used to view socializing as a transaction—like, I'll give this much if I get that much. But then it hit me that people bring different things to the table. Some people are great for a night at the Broadway shows, some are hilarious, some never leave the house but will bail you out with a loan or show up to your funeral. Others just provide solid advice. Not everyone fits every circle. Everyone has their niche.

People have become inconsiderate, overly self-absorbed, and quite intolerant. Our core values have shifted significantly. For instance, you see people shamelessly praising themselves—claiming they are brilliant, sensitive, or incredibly generous—and they don't even realize how silly it looks. They seem to have forgotten that others judge you by your actions, not by your own self-promotion.

In today's society, people are losing their way amidst rapid changes and impossible standards being forced upon them. This leads to constant dissatisfaction, disappointment, bitterness, and envy. Everything around us seems designed to foster that kind of mindset. It isn't easy, but one must try to protect their own peace of mind whenever possible.
Bryan Taylor9 said:I honestly think people just love playing the victim to manipulate others. Take my friend, for example. She gets into a massive car wreck—totaled her car—and she lives way out in the middle of nowhere. On top of that, she’s got a toddler, a sick mom, asthma... basically, she’s a walking disaster zone. So, naturally, I’m trying to be a good person and help her out. I’m sending her links to grocery delivery services, suggesting she hire a cleaning service, trying to call her—but she won't pick up because she's supposedly "too overwhelmed" and "too busy" with all this chaos. Fine. I backed off and did what I could. Then, we finally meet up yesterday for the first time in over a year, and she starts bragging about how she's buying a vacation condo in Florida. I was floored. Like, WTF? You don't have ten seconds to answer a phone call, but you suddenly found the bandwidth to scout real estate? You can barely keep your head above water, everything falls on your shoulders, and now you're adding a second home to the pile? Since when did she have time to browse listings?
It’s blatant manipulation. It's pure sympathy-seeking, and once you actually look past the drama, everything seems perfectly fine...

Not to mention, we spent maybe five minutes talking about my life.

Complaining has become quite the trend lately. Everyone seems perpetually rushed, overwhelmed, misunderstood, and struggling to make ends meet, as if the world is out to get them. From an objective standpoint, though, most of these situations aren't nearly as dire as they claim. In my experience, those who complain the loudest often have the fewest actual issues. Usually, people who constantly vent in this manner are simply seeking a bit of attention.

I always find it a bit amusing when I hear people complaining about things that seem trivial compared to my own life. I honestly can't wrap my head around how they don't feel any awkwardness about venting to me, especially since I'm in a much tougher spot regarding those same issues. 😁

Relationships need to be balanced; everyone should feel like the connection is mutually beneficial. There are certain people who mostly talk about themselves and rarely listen, yet they aren't necessarily bad people. They might step up to help someone or offer company when needed. While hanging out with them might not be the ideal social experience, there is still an exchange happening, which makes for a fair compromise. However, if one person is doing all the giving without receiving anything in return, then the friendship truly loses its purpose.
Sarah Ross21 said:You definitely have the most intense username on this whole forum, haha.

Honestly, I struggle with setting boundaries and dealing with my own insecurities, so it’s no surprise these types target me. But really, the responsibility is on me to learn how to deal with people like that.

Some people eventually give up, but the most toxic ones? They never let go. They cling to you like leeches.🙂

You can't always play nice, waiting for someone to realize their mistake, explaining yourself, and trying to reject them gently just to avoid hurting feelings. Sometimes you have to be blunt and meet their hostility with your own just to protect yourself. It isn't pleasant and nobody enjoys doing it, but occasionally there is no other way.

Those "leeches" actually need you more than you need them. You're the one in the stronger position, yet you're choosing to act powerless. No matter how you shake them off, they'll likely circle back sooner or later because their urge to drain others is stronger than anything else. 😁 They might get angry or sulk, but they will come looking for you again. 😁
What does it actually mean to be "crazy"? in Psychology ·
George Wood2 said:@Donna White50, a medal for bravery? 🏅 You certainly are a genius.
Nobody actually wants to be perceived as insane. 🙂 That is perfectly fine by me. It is quite reasonable and adaptive behavior.
Rather than descending into a destructive cycle of one-upmanship and intellectual posturing, I would prefer we engage in a more casual, colloquial dialogue. This brings me to a question: why is there such madness surrounding the idea that the majority of the population possesses some semblance of a moral and common-sense compass? Are those labeled as "crazy" actually truly deranged?
I should have clarified my point earlier; I am not merely referring to explicit, extreme insanity, but also to those "crazy" little eccentricities found in everyday human behavior.

The costs of consultations, the fees, the waiting periods—whether dealing with those deemed "insane" or just navigating the system—are staggeringly high in our part of the country. It makes me wonder: what is the exact reason, or perhaps some hidden industry secret, behind why medications and consultations aimed at achieving universal health are so prohibitively expensive? Is it simply because not everyone can afford to seek treatment when they need it?
Must someone be enriched every single hour by charging hundreds of dollars per hour for things that seem so obvious?!$167
It is pure curiosity regarding these strange extremes.

We all have our little eccentricities 😁 , meaning we are all somewhat unconventional in our thoughts, actions, or tastes. While nobody can truly define "normalcy," most people can recognize oddity in themselves and others—and if it is mild and harmless, it doesn't bother us. In fact, it can even be charming.

The issue arises when that scale of eccentricity expands, especially when it begins to threaten the individual or those around them. At that point, "madness" becomes dangerous, and people—both as individuals and as a society—seek ways to protect themselves. People distance themselves from what threatens them, and society always strives for self-preservation.

In the past, those who didn't fit in or struggled with mental health were treated quite harshly and often spent their time in strict isolation or institutions. Today, American society tries to help as much as possible, aiming to provide enough support so they can reintegrate and live within the community. Sometimes this is successful, and sometimes it is not.

A few years ago, I read quite a bit about the lives of various Zen masters, and based on what I read, it wouldn't be wrong to conclude that those teachers would be on psychotherapy and medication today. They were once celebrated as enlightened teachers believed to have reached higher states of consciousness and understood the true nature of reality; today, they might be diagnosed with psychotic disorders.

Times change, and so does our understanding of what is "normal" and how we treat those who are different.

Nowadays, we often hear the term "the new normal," which describes the rapid and constant shifts we face daily that continuously redefine the criteria for "normality" and "acceptability." We live in an era where these changes happen faster than ever, and we must find a way to adapt, or very little will remain "normal." 😁

Well, I finally did it. 👎

Two-thirds of the way through the movie, the heavens just opened up. They had to cut the projection. Honestly, it was such a bummer. $10 That’s nearly four hours of my life gone. Just like that. 👎 As long as they don't cancel the screenings just because we get a little drizzle at six in the evening. Seriously. 🤦

That part of the movie I caught was actually pretty solid. Really hoping they schedule a re-release or some kind of encore screening somewhere soon.

That movie was—and still is—pretty popular, so you can easily find it online. There's no need to wait for a rescheduled showing. 🙂
