CPU overheating issues

Pull the motherboard out of the case and take a look at how everything settled on the underside. And make sure you swap out that thermal paste.
Best CPU upgrade for an older motherboard?

I checked my BIOS version,
I've already updated it once,
the current version is:
1701 BIOS for M2N-SLI deluxe te
Support new CPUs, please refer to our CPU support list for more details:
http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/c...Language=en-us
After that, there's only 5001 for AM3 processors.
There's this site selling used processors from China,
they guarantee functionality—they test everything before shipping.
9950 - $133 95W
6750 - $107 125W
I might pull the trigger on one of those.
Do I need to worry about power draw because of the motherboard?
Can I just throw any of them in?
Thanks everyone
LP
Just grab an Athlon x3 or x4 under 95W on Craigslist and you're good to go. What GPU are you running? Also, make sure to update to the 5001 BIOS.

Looking at the specs, this board doesn't list support for Phenom, just Sempron and Athlon models.
http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M2NMX_SE/HelpDesk_CPU/, I spent quite a bit of time hunting around on eBay and eventually picked up an Athlon x2 4600, which works great. The best one for my current setup is the Athlon x2 6000, since I'm on the AM2 socket.
But now I've spotted the Phenom x4 9950, which looks like an incredible processor!
http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K10/AM...ZXAGHBOX).html
It mentions compatibility with AM2 and AM2+, and my motherboard supports up to 89 W.
I'm wondering what would happen if I actually installed that Phenom. Some people say all you need is a BIOS update and that AM2+ chips work fine on AM2. I actually just performed a BIOS update using a bootable USB via DOS to get to the latest 2008 version—that's the newest one listed on the manufacturer's site. So, I'm just curious: would that Phenom actually run even though it isn't officially on the m2n-mx-se compatibility list? Probably not, but I'm curious. Plus, my board caps out at 2 GB of RAM, so I don't plan on spending much more on this machine, but I'd love to know for the sake of information.😁
😉
Even with a BIOS update, I can only use CPUs that are actually on the official list.

Maybe if you step outside into some dry air first, then come back and grab the motherboard without touching anything else. Honestly, I've pulled thousands of MBs out of laptops and PCs over the years and never once fried one with static electricity, so that whole theory feels a bit exaggerated to me.

Button cells are rated at 3 volts; I've never heard of anything being 3.2v

Care to enlighten us? How is an average user supposed to notice any difference between legitimate Windows and a pirated version?

I see you're leaning toward AMD, but even with a 270x card, an FM2 setup just won't cut it. You should definitely go with AM3+.
Grab an Intel Core i7, a solid cooler, and a decent motherboard.

put everything back together, hit the power button, and the GPU started spinning like crazy. I realized I hadn't plugged in the power connector properly. I shut it down immediately and fixed the connection, but now my FPS dropped from 70 down to 30 in one of my games.
The fan spins fine, but it's overheating like crazy.
Is it dead?
It's an HD4870, if that matters.
Pull the card, take off the heatsink, and apply fresh thermal paste. If you haven't done this before, just take it to a pro.

If looks aren't everything, then you might as well just use egg cartons.

Just a little heads-up—save yourself the headache and grab your parts from a different shop. That Edigital place is honestly a joke when it comes to service... plus, if you ever have to deal with a warranty claim, you'll be waiting forever because they ship everything back to Mexico for repairs.

I wish we could actually have a different shop for once instead of always dealing with PayPal.

Joseph Barrett said:Standard DDR1 isn't even available in 2GB sticks anymore, at least not in my experience. Plus, that stuff on eBay from the link above won't actually work with the OP's motherboard. You really need to check the item description 😉
My advice to the author would be to look on Craigslist for two 1GB sticks for maybe $27 each. That would bring the total up to 3GB when combined with what's already there—just under the limit for 32-bit Windows, which is likely what's being used. Honestly, there's no point in spending more than that on an old rig with a Pentium 4 processor 😉
Well, enlighten us then. Why won't it work?
