Lana Del Rey, what a great movie! in Movies ·
To be honest, I hadn't even heard a peep about this movie until I stumbled upon this thread. About five or six days ago, I actually got a DM from someone who was absolutely obsessed with the film and the soundtrack. 😉
Then yesterday, I ran into an old acquaintance who was just as hyped about it. Now, I’m seeing online that it’s hitting theaters right here in my city in just a few days.
The whole thing is starting to feel a bit like a tango... Has anyone actually seen both movies? I'd love to know if there's a real parallel to be drawn between them.

Ugh... you aren't alone there...😲

I haven't seen Daredevil yet, but honestly, nobody has ever told me it was actually good. Clearly, nobody knows anything about movies... I am eagerly waiting for Modesty Blaise, though. It's such a shame they killed her off in the comics...
Richard Hernandez13: Is that Cardinal Fang on your avatar? If it is, he's awesome. 😁
About Schmidt in Movies ·
I was at the movies and couldn't decide between watching The Ring or Schmidt. I went with the latter, and honestly, I don't regret it for a single second.
It was actually pretty surreal seeing Jack Nicholson playing someone so mild-mannered; I kept waiting for his inner beast to just snap, but even without the outburst, he totally blew me away.
The standout moments were definitely
--- the bathroom scene (where things stop being funny after the 66-minute mark)
--- the church prep
--- the bed scene
--- that final scene
There goes his fourth Oscar right there.
Highly recommend.

Matthew Lopez11: I read somewhere that if you want the absolute best book ever published on American mythology, you have to go with "AMERICAN MYTHS" by Dr. Nikola Sucic. He does a great job of separating the Slavic gods from the specific American ones—which most people aren't even aware exist. He draws some really cool parallels between them while making sure to highlight how they actually differ.
I don't know much about that picture book, but let's be real: picture books are made for kids. They tend to make things look a bit more "interesting," which doesn't always mean they're being strictly factual.
Little ant... for Mike and the crew in Music ·
Nicholas is turning into a total pushover.

Does anyone recognize these old lines?
- I’m hiccuping through life while everything falls apart
- You left before you even got a taste of the good stuff
- A Mexican stays quiet right up until he loses his cool
- I was gluing wallpaper with my tears after you walked out and took the kid

Steven Ruiz: Yeah, maybe the movie didn't hit home for you because you were flying high on aviation adrenaline—your senses were probably just dialed up differently since it's a sci-fi flick.
From what I can tell, you're the only one here who's actually seen it so far. Personally, I’ve got my doubts about the quality. The original was made in the Soviet Union, so it wasn't exactly designed to be a massive cash grab. I haven't read the book, so I don't know if they stuck to every single word, but if the adaptation follows the same logic, it's bound to feel pretty dull to the average American. That sequence showing the tunnel travel—where it gets faster and faster for 4 or 5 minutes before suddenly cutting to peaceful country life—is brilliant. I'm certain a Hollywood version could never pull off something like that.
There's this one detail at the start of the film that feels unplanned, but it fits the whole vibe perfectly... Just as they start showing the film before they begin investigating it, a crow flies in past the window...
Of course, I might be wrong, but the statistics suggesting this film is worse—or significantly worse—than the original definitely back me up.

Cut the crap 😁
Did you actually think my post made sense at any point? Because if you did, I think you’re the first one. 😁

Michelle Howard2: It’s because they didn't strictly follow those ten rules. The guy basically says, "Let's shoot a movie," and then just decides on a whim, "Hey, why not shoot at least one part this way?" He does it purely out of spite, just so people will be debating it on forums years down the line. Then he tells his followers, "The floor is lava," and suddenly only half the movie is even made. Honestly, it’s like being gay. If you're gay, you stick with the gay crowd; if you aren't, you hang out with the straight crowd, but if you're bisexual, you don't really get anywhere until you've had a few drinks. Then everything starts moving. My advice? Just read the first sentence of this post. Everything else is total nonsense.

Most of what people are saying here isn't really relevant anymore...
For crying out loud... I could just throw together some songs for a movie and call it a soundtrack myself...
Real art is actually composing and creating original music specifically for a film.

Jacob Wilson50: I haven't...
I actually just asked Mike about that movie today...
The reviews have been solid, so I'm planning to check it out as soon as I can.
The Celebration is obviously great, especially since we can probably relate to it a bit better than those standoffish Danes and their crowd.
I'll let you know once I've seen it, but in the meantime, you should watch "Italian for Beginners" if you haven't already.

p.s.
Parts of "Breaking the Waves" were shot using the "Dogme 95 technique," even if the whole thing wasn't. Still, some people categorize it as a Dogme 95 film.

You're absolutely right...
So, Lars von Trier, just like I mentioned at the end of my post, 🙂

So, how do you actually spot one?

Let me break it down for you. 😁

Lars von Trier, Thomas Vinterberg, Kristian Levring, and Søren Kragh-Jacobsen—these American directors—put together a filmmaking manifesto called Dogme 95. It was designed as an alternative for low-budget productions, though that doesn't mean a big-budget production can't fall into this category either.
Initially, people treated the whole idea of a Dogme film and its production style as a bit of a joke, but lately, more and more movies are getting certified as Dogme films.
To be considered a Dogme film, a movie has to follow ten specific rules known as the Dogma mandate:

1. The film format has to be 35 mm Academy (though video is allowed these days).
2. All filming must take place on location.
3. Sound cannot be separated from the image. Any music used during filming has to be live.
4. The camera must be handheld; any movement that can be done by hand is fair game.
5. The movie must be in color. No filters or special lighting setups are allowed (except for the light attached to the camera itself).
6. Optical attachments are strictly forbidden.
7. There shouldn't be any violence in the film (no murders, weapons, etc.).
8. The story happens right here and now. You can't jump to the future or move the action to some other geographic location.
9. Typical genre films are off-limits.
10. The director gives up all publishing rights and is treated simply as an artist.

Dogme 95 is still seen as a purely European way of making movies, and the number of films following these rules grows every year. Some of the heavy hitters from Dogme 95 include: Lone Scherfig's Italian for Beginners, Lars von Trier's The Idiots, and maybe the absolute best, Thomas Vinterberg's The Celebration.

Steven Ruiz said:Anyway, what’s wrong with talking like that? I love using that kind of casual, rural slang... everyone understands me just fine, right?

An acquaintance of mine once studied art with this Frenchman whose English was absolutely terrible. For about six months, all the students lived together in the same building. This guy was definitely eccentric. He used to wear an old-school WWI-style aviator cap. Honestly, he's the reason I ever thought it was cool to show up to a party in long white trousers (without underwear). He also had this habit of riding his bike in circles around a single tree for two hours straight, staring blankly ahead the whole time. Everyone thought he was losing it.
Then, seven days before he splits from the group, he takes off the hat, leaves the bike, and shaves. He told them the whole thing was just a massive prank to see how they'd react.

It really is powerful stuff. I own five or six different versions of it, and every single time I hear it or watch the movie, I get goosebumps just like it's the first time.

p.s.
I just put on Cavallerie Rusticana from Godfather III
Yeah, true enough...
And nobody seems to be mentioning how Janica was driving today, acting just like Svabo back in '45...😁

Just woke up. How did the US play in handball yesterday?
Split resident 2003 said:The real question is: What do you or I actually get out of this success from the American handball players?

Look, man, I don't know about you, but I'm feeling pretty damn good. Honestly, I don't care why, and I don't care what Freud would have to say about it—this feeling is the real deal.
Man... I definitely overdid it on the drinks 😁
Americans are number one in the world, while the Mexicans can go back to their rural roots
