I was watching some old footage of fight night highlights the other day—not even the actual fights, just those raw, unedited clips of the fighters walking back to the locker rooms—and it really got me thinking about the psychological toll of high-stakes competition. We always talk about the glory, the belt, the sudden influx of sponsors, and the adrenaline rush that makes a person feel like a god for about twenty minutes. But we rarely sit down and discuss the sheer, soul-crushing vacuum that follows when the lights go out and the physical pain starts to settle in.

There is a specific kind of loneliness that exists in the immediate aftermath of a major loss. I’ve seen it in professional athletes, but I also see it in my own life in smaller, less violent ways. You pour months—sometimes years—of your entire identity into a single moment. You sacrifice your sleep, your social life, your diet, and your mental stability for one specific outcome. And then, when that outcome is negative, it isn't just a "bad day at the office." It feels like a fundamental betrayal by your own body and your own will.

I remember back in my early twenties, I spent an entire year training for a regional marathon. I lived and breathed training cycles. I was obsessed. When race day came, I hit a wall around mile 20 that felt less like physical exhaustion and more like a spiritual collapse. I didn't just finish slow; I felt like I had failed a test of character. The weeks following that race were some of the darkest I've had. I didn't want to see my friends, and I certainly didn't want to look at my running shoes. It was this profound sense of "What am I even doing with my life?" that followed the disappointment.

In combat sports, that feeling must be amplified a thousand times over. You aren't just losing a race; you are being physically dominated by another human being in front of a global audience. The transition from the absolute peak of sensory overload to the silence of a hotel room is jarring. How do you reconcile the person who was just "the champion" with the person who is now icing a swollen eye and wondering if their career is over?

I think there's a growing conversation about mental health in sports, which is good, but I wonder if we oversimplify it. We talk about "resilience" as if it’s a switch you can just flip. It’s not. Resilience is exhausting. It requires a massive amount of cognitive energy to rebuild your ego after it’s been publicly dismantled. I find myself wondering about the "losers" in these massive spectacles—not the ones who are just "outclassed," but the ones who gave everything and still came up short.

Is it even possible to maintain a healthy sense of self when your worth is so tied to a binary outcome? If you win, you're a hero; if you lose, you're a cautionary tale. That kind of pressure seems like a recipe for a permanent identity crisis. I’ve always been fascinated by how people handle that pivot. Some people go into a deep depression, some people become obsessed with revenge, and some people just... vanish from the spotlight entirely.

I'm curious to hear from the people here who live in high-pressure environments—whether you're an athlete, a high-stakes trader, or even someone in a high-intensity creative field. How do you handle the "crash" after a major event? When you’ve staked everything on a single moment and it doesn't go your way, how do you stop that failure from becoming your entire identity?

Look, it’s decent because you can run all your tests incredibly fast and keep everything in one spot. Plus, they actually treat you like a human being—you feel like they’re actually giving you their time and attention for once.
On the flip side, don't go expecting miracles. You're seeing the exact same doctors you'd find at a public county hospital. The only real perk is that they have better tech, which honestly, every single hospital in this country should have by now.🤷
Regarding the cost, if someone is serious about getting checked out there, it’s worth grabbing a yearly private insurance plan. I did exactly that for $267 (though I think prices bumped up recently) to get a full physical. It covered all my lab work, an internist, a gynecologist, pelvic exams, abdominal ultrasounds, and most importantly for me, a breast ultrasound. I could never get that done at the public clinics because the waiting lists were absolutely insane.
Clinics like this are fine for routine checkups, but let’s be real: the actual solution should be upgrading our entire public healthcare system to this level. It’s just pathetic that women have to shell out for private clinics just because the local hospitals don't even carry 3D ultrasound machines.
Charles Hernandez49 said:I need some help here. My doctor thinks I’m just dealing with depression, but my psychiatrist? He thinks there’s actually an underlying physical cause. My red blood cell count and hemoglobin are both high, and I've had this pain in my liver area since before I even started meds, which is why he's getting suspicious. I checked my vitamins and minerals the other day and my iron levels are through the roof, plus my PMS is absolutely wrecking me. What am I supposed to do?

Cut back on the vitamins, start taking Jasmine or some other birth control pill, and get moving—start doing some actual exercise.
Seriously, there are people out there who actually get sick because they're "too healthy." 🤷
Oh, and yeah, go sign up to be a regular blood donor.
Sean Doyle4 said:Old question: when friends betray you and you realize they were never actually your friends, how do you move past the hurt and bitterness? How do you stop the urge for revenge and the spiral of self-pity?

I met this guy once when he was going through some stuff. I was there for him, listening to his problems over and over. Then, my own life hit a rough patch, and while he managed to pull through, I stayed stuck. Right around then, he claimed he’d fallen for me. I knew it was a lie—he barely knew me; I was basically just his unpaid therapist. So, I pulled away for a bit. Things kept getting worse for me, and I really needed someone to listen, especially since he had experience with things I thought might help. After a few months, things felt settled enough that I tried talking to him again. It turns out he was just looking out for himself the whole time. When we finally met up in person, his interest vanished instantly (let's just say I'd gained some weight due to the stress). Honestly, I could see the selfish motive behind his "desire to help" all along, even if he denied it, but it still stunned me how little effort he puts in now. Now, he just shrugs and says, "I don't know what I can do to help." And before, I couldn't get him to leave me alone.

The urge for revenge is eating at me, but it's useless. There's nothing I could say that would matter to him, and even if I said the most cutting things possible to hurt him, it wouldn't help me. The bitterness would just stay. I need to let go of this resentment, but I have no idea how. It's especially hard seeing him—the one who used me and hurt me—suddenly having everything go his way, while this was just the final straw for me. Self-pity is setting in too. Why does everything have to turn upside down? Why does it feel like nothing I do matters because he can always twist things against me? I just want to scream to God and the whole world—it isn't fair!!! How do I get rid of this feeling of being wronged?

Scrawny 🤷

Charles Cooper2 said:Do guys actually get stuck in their own heads and genuinely believe they aren't good enough for a girl? I have this friend dealing with a guy who’s basically had a total mental breakdown, and now he’s constantly acting like some kind of loser who doesn't deserve her. It’s not even a "it's not you, it's me" breakup situation because he’s still leaving the door wide open—he just won't stop preaching about how she deserves someone way better because she's so smart and amazing and whatever. She's head over heels for him and can't wrap her head around why he's being so incredibly insecure. She’s told him a million times that she loves him exactly as he is and doesn't want anyone else, but he's just obsessed with this idea that he's a failure because everything in his life is hitting the fan right now. What do you guys think about this mindset? Is there any way she can get him to snap out of it? I’ve never dealt with anything like this, so I’m totally lost on what to tell her.

From what I've seen, guys usually pull that "I'm not good enough" crap when they don't know how to pick up a girl or right after they've cheated on her (or blew all their cash on some stupid stock gamble). They're drowning in guilt and just want the easiest, least painful way to bail.
And honestly? Most of the time, they're actually right. She probably does deserve better.

It happens all the time because of stress. I’ve even read about women in POW camps who would lose their periods entirely, only for things to return to normal once they finally got back to a regular life.
Then you’ve got elite athletes—those girls push themselves through such brutal training sessions that their estrogen levels just crater, causing them to miss cycles too.
And yeah, let’s be real, extreme dieting does the exact same thing. It's true.

Alex Wilson7 said:Man, I was seriously dying today from ovarian pain. My period isn't even due until around March 23rd. I have no clue why it’s hitting me this hard—I couldn't sit down or even walk straight without constantly shifting around... it felt absolutely brutal, like someone had literally tied weights to them.
This is maybe the second or third time it's been this bad, but honestly, I think this is the worst one yet. I went to see my OB-GYN last time it flared up like this and they just told me everything looked fine, no inflammation or anything, but nothing showed up on the tests while I was sitting there losing my mind from the pain.
By the way, I had sex with my boyfriend for the first time at the start of the month and we've hooked up a few more times since, always using protection. So I really don't get what could be causing this.
Has anyone else dealt with something similar?

Okay, looking at your dates, you're right in the middle of your cycle—that means you're ovulating.

http://www.webmd.com/women/ovulation-pain

And here’s what pops up when you Google "ovulation pain, Dr. Vera Wang":

Since follicular fluid leaks into the abdominal cavity when a follicle ruptures during ovulation, the pain isn't just localized to one side; it can feel diffuse throughout your entire abdomen, even on the opposite side from where the actual ovulation occurred.

Best regards,
Dr. Vera Wang

Alex Wilson7 said:lol nah, we’re both totally fine. we’ve been together 15 months and were best friends for three years before that, so honestly, we know each other better than we know ourselves. besides, we don't really do oral that much—out of the four times we've slept together, we've done it once. either way, we're good, so it's definitely not that.
And we're each other's first.

Oh, wow, just wonderful. 😍

Look, if you're telling the truth, maybe you have some kind of anatomical issue, like a tilted uterus or something. 🤷
Or maybe you just caught a cold, or your hormones are completely out of whack.
Could be a cyst, too. I mean, how would we even know?

briskeagle38 said:I've read a million times that there are way more bacteria in your mouth than in a vagina.

So, if people actually sat down and started counting every single microbe in their mouths—even without symptoms—I doubt anyone would ever risk an "adventure" involving oral sex... yet everyone jumps right in anyway.

Well, yeah, but that’s exactly why it works that way! Since there's less bacteria in the vagina normally, it’s probably much more sensitive to those aggressive bacteria coming from the mouth. It just makes sense.
There’s also this thing called yeast, which you find in bread and stuff like that, and apparently, it can settle "down there" if some guy doesn't bother brushing his teeth after dinner.🤷

briskeagle38 I can't even begin to deal with this right now. Seriously. It’s just one thing after another with people thinking they can just say whatever they want without any consequences. I am absolutely losing my mind over here!
I mean, honestly, I don't even know what to tell you. It’s like, does it even matter? You plant the same seeds in two different fields, but one turns out gold and the other is just a total bust. It makes zero sense. 😕

Look, I don't know. I’m just sitting here trying to apply some basic logic to this whole mess. Not every field is cut from the same cloth, sure, but let's be real—a woman's intuition isn't exactly "less sensitive" than a guy's gut feeling. It's all the same stuff. 🤷

Look, I have no clue, but I bet it’s absolutely revolting. It makes sense, though—if he’s walking around with some nasty oral infection, like strep or staph in his throat, and then he passes that straight down there while performing oral... yeah, she’s gonna be feeling that same damn pain he's feeling in his throat, right?

Look, you gotta give her credit here. Seriously, if you were using protection, there’s basically zero chance anything happened. Unless, of course, your guy has terrible gum disease or some chronic tonsillitis and you both happen to be big into oral sex. Then you might have an issue.

Either my stomach is killing me or I've got a massive headache, 🤷
Joking aside, it’s either a straight-up infection or just those brutal cramps you get when your hormones go haywire during PMS.
If it’s an infection, you're stuck with antibiotics. If it’s just the hormones, you either pop a pill or fix your diet.
