Thanks... I think I'll just stay home instead.😁
Best film magazines to follow? in Movies ·
To whole Hollywood scene always felt like it was missing a soul or some actual backbone to me... It just feels like a glorified catalog where everything gets treated with the same weight, whether it’s a total disaster or a freaking masterpiece.
...
Someone mentioned the Annals... who actually puts that out? I’ve skimmed a few issues and it seems like a cool mix of deep dives and quick news... usually they have those long essays at the start of the weekly digests by all the big names in the industry...

I’m throwing out a few topics based on what I’ve noticed lately, and since nobody seems to be talking about film magazines—whether they're highbrow or just trashy—I figured I'd start the conversation. Do you actually trust any specific publications? Are you a regular subscriber to anything, or do you just grab a copy if it happens to be sitting on a newsstand?
Are we talking domestic or imported?
And honestly, how much do these mags actually influence what you watch, either in terms of how many movies you see or how you judge them?

dustyscout53 said:Don't beat yourself up; the movie is massively overrated. If I had to sum it up in one word—which is all you need for a flick like this—it would be: fluff. It’s nothing but pure fluff.

Here we go again.😬

Which Republican is this? ...They love small business owners... because apparently shopkeepers are the perfect symbol for a conservative society obsessed with "traditional values." I bet they're big fans of "happiness" too. 😬

I stumbled upon the traders by complete accident, before I even knew who that heavy-set guy with the beard was or what he was filming about...
I honestly can't thank Smith enough for proving that you only need five shots and a smart script to make a masterpiece...not to mention that killer black-and-white cinematography...
Look, I get it—plenty of people probably won't "get" the vibe that drives this whole movie, so they might not appreciate it as much as I do, but honestly...

Great... we've officially hit rock bottom with the dumbest movie thread ever created.😁

The movie was a letdown for me... barely got a laugh here and there... the pacing is all over the place... plus, I can't stand James Spader as an actor... sure, there were a few funny moments, but they felt like tiny islands in a massive sea of disappointment.

Ah, the good old days... I’d love to give it another watch. It's been at least a decade since I last did.

So, this guy basically went all out... Honestly, it’s probably the most complex Burton film out there. It slowly gets under your skin until you actually end up loving it.
It might not be a movie you fall in love with instantly, or one that hits you with those massive visuals like his other stuff, but it’s definitely one that deserves respect.

newcomer said:There was this 19-year-old girl who landed the role of a lifetime... playing the daughter of a mob boss in the third installment of The Godfather... she was just background filler in the first two, nothing major... and after that, she basically vanished from the acting scene... now she's popped up again as some "visionary" talent writing incomprehensible scripts and even weirder movies... who is she? 😉

The formula for a comeback is simple: either you act in Lord of the Rings or you pivot to directing... I can't wait to see the mess produced by failed actors turned filmmakers.😁

dustyscout53 said:I liked the movie, but I can't quite put my finger on why. I could probably write something just as good about a pirate from the Caribbean.

If you had actually paid attention while watching the film, you might've noticed that you and Scarlett share some serious similarities. It would help you wrap your head around the characters' motivations that are clearly eating you alive... though maybe you were too busy swooning over Johnny Depp's eyeliner. She actually mentions in one scene how she was drawn to Bill Murray for the exact same reason. So, instead of being bitter, maybe just embrace your inner romantic.😁

Looks like we've moved on to the "could have been" list... Speaking of which, I can't help but think of Mira Sorvino. If I recall correctly, she actually has an Oscar, so that’s one less for this category.

Jose Miller17, you can definitely do better than that. 😛
Man, you're lazy!

If you weren't so obsessed with her nose, maybe you'd actually put some effort in.😛

dustyscout53 said:I was expecting at least a hint of drama. I wasn't looking for gunfights or some twisted plot involving murdered pregnant women—nothing like that. Honestly, I would’ve been happy if the peak of the movie was just that kiss (maybe it was), provided there was an actual story underneath it. Watching this... it's just not worth the effort.
Look, I didn't pay for a ticket just to be forced to WATCH a movie. Screw directors who have zero respect for their audience.
Whoa! What exactly did you SEE? What on earth did you actually GET out of that movie?! 🙂 😠 :2up:

To be honest, I'm not really in the mood for a debate about this flick, so I haven't shared my thoughts yet. Maybe just one sentence... look, dustyscout53, all I'll say is that in movies (and media in general), everything doesn't need to be explained through dialogue. There are other ways to express things, and Sofia is great at using them... overanalyzing the script to figure out why she married him or what he's doing there doesn't matter to the film as a whole. It's a simple script: it shows two lonely people crossing paths and finding some 'chemistry.' You sound like my grandma watching her niece and asking, "Well, what does she see in him?" Maybe a glance was enough for her. Or maybe it was the atmosphere of that dark lobby. Maybe he just liked the pattern on the wallpaper. Maybe she doesn't even know how she ended up in the marriage, so how are you supposed to know? You won't find an answer, just like she won't... (you might want to check Sofia's last movie as a better example of this style)... sure, maybe it's not enough for you, and you'd probably want a flashback to her traumatic childhood to make sense of it all...
That's about it...
..obviously, I get that the movie doesn't "work" for you for the reasons you mentioned, because at the end of the day, I agree—it's all about the feeling you have when you walk out of the theater.
...(Now I'm patting you on the head, and you'll take that as patronizing because you're acting like the new guy on the forum sending me middle finger emojis, while I'm trying to be civil by telling you to shove them where the sun don't shine so we can all move on)😁
