Britpop, Suede, strings

It feels like everything is falling apart, yet here we are—Brett is dropping his solo album! Honestly, the reason I fell for this in the first place is because it just sounds so much like Suede. 😬 It definitely leans heavily into those Sci-Fi Lullabies vibes. If you’re a fan of Suede, there's a massive chance you're going to love this too.
The opening track and lead single, Love is Dead, sounds absolutely gorgeous—after listening to it a few times, you'll find yourself totally head over heels. The whole album has this incredibly melodramatic feel to it—I don't know, maybe it's just me? I'm not entirely sure if it'll be everyone's cup of tea. I really hope the single manages to make some noise, at least over in the United Kingdom.
My absolute favorites have to be To The Winter, Scorpio Rising, Love is Dead, and Dust and Rain.

This doesn't even drop until next week.

My thread was really just meant to be about all the albums dropping in 2007—people didn't seem to be commenting much on the music itself, more just talking about what they were looking forward to.

I honestly feel like Rule #2 is going to be super hard to follow, especially since everyone was obsessed with the Gender Bender album and now they're all bowing down to Miniature Symphony...
I have no idea why I haven't sat down and listened to the new Trans Am yet. 😲 I'll get to it soon, I promise!

The new Air record is absolutely killer—I'm loving it. I wouldn't even try to compare it to anything else, and definitely nothing like Talkie Walkie (though maybe The Virgin Suicides if I absolutely had to pick something). If people mean it "picks up where it left off" in terms of that last track, then yeah, it totally works. 😬

This album is just fantastic; it’s so atmospheric, centered on love, intimate, and kind of dreamy... truly beautiful stuff. 👍 Between Sleep and Wakefulness perfectly captures the whole vibe of the record, and man, what a great title too. 😁 The intro and the outro are both stellar, but One Wild Party and Left Bank might actually be the highlights for me. I'm not sure what the deal is with Japan, but after the last one, Alone in Kyoto 👍, now we have Mer du Japon—there's even some Japanese instrumentation tucked in there. 🙂 The instrumentals? Gorgeous. The vocals? Stunning. 👍
Hands down, this is the best thing I've heard to come out this year.

I’m digging this ancient thread out of retirement because of that concert coming up next Wednesday at the Swamp! Is anyone else planning on going? (Because I definitely am!)

Also, what’s the verdict on this guy? Is this even actually music? 😬 I mean, he just strums a guitar and mumbles through these totally nonsensical lyrics. 🙏 He’s certainly one-of-a-kind—which is a huge win considering how much mediocre stuff we deal with in the US music scene—but does it actually hold any water?

Anyway, his track "Two" used to be my go-to anthem for hanging out at the beach with the right crowd (you know, those groups of young math nerds and computer geeks) 😁 , so I decided to dive into the rest of his discography. My absolute favorites have gotta be Javorov branch, Rachel, Kafić without a clue, Room without pictures, seventh policeman, Koo-Koo, Shanghai, and I haven't eaten anything tonight.

I happened to stumble upon some commentary on a forum called zarez about his second album—they were claiming it's basically the musical equivalent of an absurdist play. Does that even make sense to you guys?

I DON'T WANT TO WORK, HAND IT OVER! (x8)

then honestly? It’s such a tragedy to see instruments being played by people who have absolutely zero sense of melody... it's just painful to listen to.

Look, if you actually want to spread a message, why not just build a website or go buy a photocopier and print some propaganda flyers instead?

That’s what I’d tell them.

I have to admit, I don't recognize any song with those lyrics—though, full disclosure, I haven't listened to one of their albums yet.

I'm not sure about their show in Washington, D.C., but hey, maybe I'll catch them in a Small town in the Midwest next Saturday? Or maybe I'll swing by seeing Person on Friday? I really don't know—I need to check if I can even grab tickets online first, because there's no way I'm making the trip if they're already sold out!

Is anyone hanging around that Small town in the Midwest or near Person who would be willing to pick up a couple of tickets for us? Shoot me a DM so we can work something out!

Yeah, I totally agree—"Sleep" is such an amazing track...

My eyes open, filled with glass, and the truth breaks through the surface, shattering all the lies that everything is fine, while I struggle to hold back a scream so I don't break the silence...

stormyviper11 said:Back in the day, you actually had to go out and find a record—buy it, hunt it down, or borrow it from a friend. And once you had it, even if it didn't immediately grab you, you’d give it another spin just because you didn't want that investment to go to waste! Maybe after a few listens, it would finally click. Nowadays? You just toss an album straight into the digital recycle bin, which totally kills any chance for music that isn't an instant hit on the first listen. If I'd had access to everything like this when I was a kid, I probably would have never grown to love Neil Young, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, or so many others who took a while to grow on me.

I don't know about all that. Personally, I never delete anything. 😬

I actually have a massive mountain of music I haven't even listened to yet! Whenever I see someone trading something that looks interesting, I'll grab it—sometimes I even pick up stuff just because I saw a review praising it somewhere. Maybe I fall into that "collector" category, but hey, what's wrong with that? At least I’m constantly rediscovering something fascinating within my own collection. 🙂 Like Yngwie Malmsteen, for instance, the other day.

And honestly, there's plenty of stuff I listen to over and over even if it doesn't click right away. I didn't even discover Pink Floyd until my experimental phase (I'm still young, okay? 😉).
Led Zeppelin definitely didn't grab me on the first, second, or even third listen. Same goes for Iron Maiden. But hey, maybe one day they'll actually grow on me—that's why I don't delete them!

I don't stress about the music. And as for "indie"... who cares?

I just got back from vacation! The Beach Boys were absolutely incredible—seriously, you have to hear them live, their energy is just next level.

TBA was awesome too (I actually managed to wedge myself right into the front row during the Green Day set!), and they played: 3-logy of woe, Geniuses, Off the Rails, Good Vibes, UV rays (they kicked things off with 🙂 ), a colorful item, God and earthlings, Heroic, a little bit of sleep, Papillo, butt and boobs. I think that covers it!

Septica and Green Day were both great. Didn't catch Antenat, though.

Man, things got wild during Green Day—people were pushing so hard they actually bent and tore down part of the barricade! During TBA, it looked like all the security guards had to jump up onto the fence just to hold it steady. 😁
I haven't actually sat through a ton of anime movies or series, but I have to say—Lain really left a lasting impression on me...

Adam Wright56 said:He shows up in almost all the sequels—unless my memory is failing me, which happens more than I'd like to admit, in the second one. (Actually, if I recall correctly, there aren't even any summon monsters in the second game 🤔 ). And in most of the sequels, he's actually one of the bosses, except for the aforementioned VII where he's strictly a summon, just like in IX, and then in the first one where he's an NPC.

Anyways, in the world of FF VII Bahamut, he exists as a summon, so it’s totally normal that someone could call him forth! Even if you don't fight him directly in that specific part of the game, it's still possible because anyone holding the Bahamut materia can summon him. 😉 And since the movie takes place after the events of the game....

But why even stress about it when THAT ISN'T Bahamut! 😬

Wait, don't you also fight Bahamut in nine?! I remember there being this really cool animation (was it at the start of the third disc?), involving Bahamut and that white one, 😬 Alexander. But hey, you're the expert here! 😁

Still, I'm just not a fan of that fight. It's honestly kind of silly. : arguments forthcoming :

Anyway, we're totally going off-topic here...

Adam Wright56 said:You honestly think you’ve played it? You really do! 😬

I mean, I assume they have it in the fourth one too, right? Though, to be honest, I didn't spend much time playing that one—my focus was mostly on 7, 8, and 9. Now I've finally managed to get my hands on some ROMs for 1 through 6, but man, getting number 6 to actually run properly has been such a struggle! 😬

I mean, seriously, I just couldn't get past the fact that they're fighting against summon monsters—it just doesn't make any sense since those things aren't even part of the FF7 world! Look, I totally get it, I really do... they couldn't cram every single idea they had into one game, but what was the logic behind this specific choice? It feels so out of place!

A Leviathan... a freaking earthworm... Seriously? 🤣
Trust me when I say this—we haven't even seen the worst of it yet! Not until he starts breathing fire, though, right?

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children in Movies ·
I caught it... uh... sometime around September of last year, I think!

Did I love it? Honestly, no. But I did end up watching it twice just because my eyes were craving more!

Heads up—spoilers ahead!
Spoilers incoming!

I really wasn't a fan of how they forced Aerith into everything. It felt like they saw those massive waves of fans hysterically begging for her to be brought back to life in the game, so now they’ve shoved her into every single minute of the movie. In reality, the whole thing feels like it's actually about her...

And I wasn't feeling that whole subplot where they fight some summon monster... Bahamut, I think? Because, from what I remember, he wasn't even in the seventh installment! I know he showed up in the eighth, but I can't recall him being anywhere else...

Then there are those two elements I didn't care for, which combine like materia once Cloud wraps up that fight with help from Aerith. Ugh.

The action sequences are definitely the best part (even that one with Bahamut—actually, especially that one!), and that Tiffin scene near the beginning was pretty great too. There are a few cool lines and an interesting scene here and there, but overall? It just wasn't enough. I really don't get why people always seem to mess up their best work.

Okay, spoilers over!

Vincent rules, though! Maybe that new game starring him as the lead will be good? I don't know—I've kind of stopped keeping up with all that. I'm not even sure if it's out yet!

Anyway, thanks for reminding me that I seriously need to play the sixth one! I still haven't gotten around to it, even though I own it. 🙂
I mean, honestly, does it even make sense to bother writing this out? Probably not... No.

But then again, I’ve been hearing through the grapevine that tickets are actually flying off the shelves!

Man, I would really love to catch this opening act—they sound incredible—but still, you know how it goes...
Eternal Brilliance of an Unstoppable Mind in Movies ·
Has anyone else caught this movie lately? It was just playing on ABC a few hours ago.

Man, it actually totally caught me off guard—I only started watching it because I had nothing else going on! But wow, what an incredible love story, especially since most of it is told through one man's perspective...

The plot is super non-linear and kind of a mind-bender, too, with all that whole memory-wiping stuff happening...

Anyone else seen it? What did you think?

And hey, Kate Winslet actually won an Oscar for her lead role in this one...
Kevin Chavez3 said:"Solid Gold" is way better than "Entertainment!" for me.

I’m actually sitting here listening to those two right now, so I’ll get back to you soon! 😁

As for New Adventures in Hi-Fi... yeah, I'd totally agree with you there.

Honestly, it feels like I'm usually on the same page as the majority—well, except when it comes to those last two Pink Floyd albums (A Momentary Lapse of Reason and The Division Bell)... and regarding Animals? Man, I think that one gets way too much hype! I mean, Dogs and Sheep are great, sure, but the whole thing is just three songs longer than two minutes! 😁

It's the same deal with Kid A; I feel like people love it almost as much as they love OK Computer.

And Depeche Mode - Exciter? That's an absolute classic in my book! Though I guess most fans just want to spit on it, huh?

There are plenty of things where I don't really share the common opinion... but here goes nothing:
Massive Attack - 100th Window
The Cure - Mixed Up
Belle & Sebastian - Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant

Loveless said:Alright, let's get into it! We need to put together a list of 10 albums that—in my humble opinion—are way too overrated. But hey, before we dive in, let’s set some ground rules: please, for the love of everything musical, leave stuff like Bon Jovi and Mariah Carey out of this entirely. Seriously, the only people who actually enjoy those are the folks over at Billboard, right? Let's keep it interesting!

Dream Theater - Awake - OK, let’s be honest—we all have that one list of albums we used to blast on repeat, only to feel a little bit embarrassed about them now... I haven't actually spent a ton of time diving into this specific genre—maybe four or five Dream Theater albums at most, which isn't even saying much! I used to be really into The Cranberries too, but man, listening to Dolores O'Riordan now just feels so heavy—especially when she sings those naive lyrics about Sarajevo... and besides, it’s not exactly prog metal, is it?

Look, I’m not saying that Awake is bad—it’s definitely not!—but let’s be honest, their other albums were just way too much to handle sometimes, don't you think?

I’ve gotta say, I really do love R.E.M., but *Document*? Man, that album is just a messy collection of confusing, unmelodic, irritating, and honestly pathetic little tunes. Even tracks like "The One I Love" or "It's the End of the World" couldn't save it for me! I actually tossed my copy of this CD in the trash—honestly, I truly believed it was something nobody would ever need to hear again...

So, let's talk about Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast... honestly, if nothing else, that album cover is just a total disaster! Don't get me wrong—Eddie is an absolute icon and the whole concept behind him is pure genius; but the music itself? Ugh, it’s just awful. I mean, I actually managed to power through about ten seconds of this "classic masterpiece" when my friend decided to blast it at me... but seriously, can we please talk about the artwork?!

I really hope you're just pulling my leg here...!

9. Moby - Play - Look, this isn't a total disaster like some of the other albums mentioned above—it’s definitely got its moments! But honestly? It just doesn't quite hit that top-tier level for me. It’s not quite strong enough to crack my personal top 20 best albums of the nineties, you know? And if it can't make that cut, how am I supposed to justify putting it on my list? 3.7 milesAh, Moby... honestly, he only really nailed two great tracks there. Even though there are twenty-two songs on the Play album—can you believe that? Such a massive tracklist!

I mean, come on... if you only like two Moby songs, what on earth were you even expecting?!

Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head - Okay, look, this album isn't bad at all! I mean, Rolling Stone actually named it Album of the Year, so you know there's something there—but then what's the catch? Well, for me, I just couldn't shake the feeling that they were basically playing the same hits U2 had already mastered years ago. Honestly, for a while there, Coldplay felt like the most intense group of copycats out there! Maybe I'm totally off base, or maybe they really are... who knows? That's exactly why they ended up on this list...

[/B]

Good grief, if you're actually going to bother translating this into English, at least have the decency to cite your sources!

Alright, let me jump in here and be a little bit of a contrarian—though, honestly, this is just my personal take on what most people absolutely adore! 😁

I honestly haven't been keeping up with this thread too closely—so sorry if I’m repeating things already said! But man, where do I start? I've got some thoughts on those classics... Like, don't get me wrong, I think Sonic Youth's Daydream Nation is solid, and I'm definitely not saying Pixies' Trompe Le Monde is a bad record—it just feels way more overrated than it deserves to be, you know? And then there's The Offspring's Americana—everyone seems to absolutely worship that one, but personally? I think it's pretty mediocre. Oh, and The Beatles in general? I'm just not feeling it. Plus Clandestino... what can I say? Just my two cents!
