Kevin Chavez3 said:You’re kind of underselling them now! I mean—Nick Cave, Morrissey, Franz Ferdinand, New York Dolls, Happy Mondays, Stereo MC's, The Prodigy, Asian Dub Foundation, Moby? They’re all just as huge, if not bigger, than The Flaming Lips!
Okay, let's not even get into the quality debate, but aside from The Prodigy (I mean, come on, is anyone actually going to argue they were on the same level as Nick Cave or Franz Ferdinand before that Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival?? 😠 :-), everyone else after Franz Ferdinand seems way smaller to me than The Flaming Lips. But hey, that's just my take! (And don't get me wrong, I love some of them—like the New York Dolls—and I still think it was such a shame they overlapped with Sonic Youth 😢 )
+I always forget that the festival used to be held in Split too! 😬
I'm not sure how you'd measure this precisely, but I just remembered we could look at Last.fm stats, sorted by listener count:
The Flaming Lips
27,521,220 plays (1,047,474 listeners)
Asian Dub Foundation
4,900,927 plays (283,646 listeners)
Stereo MC's
1,724,961 plays (224,521 listeners)
New York Dolls
1,903,238 plays (196,666 listeners)
Happy Mondays
2,015,109 plays (191,127 listeners)
I totally blanked on Moby, I have to admit! 😳
I know Last.fm isn't the perfect snapshot of the population, especially here in America, but if you want to estimate who's actually showing up to a concert, it's a much better gauge than Facebook, right? 😁
