Help! Dealing with constant pop-ups! in IT Support ·
First off, run some junk out of your system with CCleaner, then grab ADWcleaner straight from their site and give that a whirl too. It’s also a smart move to run a full scan with Malwarebytes just to be safe. While you're at it, dig into the settings for all your browsers—check if that pop-up blocker is actually turned on and see if any weird extensions have hitched a ride without you knowing. Besides using ABP, look for anything else that shouldn't be there.
Slow Windows XP boot times in IT Support ·
I’m running an ASUS motherboard with an Athlon 64 X2 5000+ on BIOS F4. I’ve got two drives hooked up—one PATA and one SATA—and everything is running smooth as silk on Windows XP SP3.
Check out what’s actually loading during bootup. Just hit the Run command, type in msconfig, and check out the startup tab.
Issues installing Windows XP. in IT Support ·
Take a look at the POST screen and see if it actually lists your hard drive and the CD/DVD drive... if the optical drive isn't showing up there, the BIOS isn't seeing it at all. You should probably double-check your connections.
If the drive does show up, then the hardware might be fine, but maybe it’s just not reading properly, or your installation disc isn't bootable—like, maybe it wasn't burned correctly to begin with.
Half of my wireless keyboard isn't working in IT Support ·
It’s not even about the wireless signal... either the electronics are functional or they aren't (and yours seem fine).
The real headache is likely the ribbon cable connection to the board or some damaged contact pads under the keys themselves—usually happens when those "repair guys" try to "fix" things by taking everything apart after a spill or a cleaning attempt.
OS and RAM usage: what to expect? in IT Support ·
Obviously, having more memory is always better, but since some operating systems just don't touch all of it, you should definitely go with the 64-bit version instead of the 32-bit one.
It feels a bit weird seeing it labeled as "internal" because that could mean pretty much anything besides RAM. It would be way easier if you just told us which laptop you're rocking—like the brand and the specific model—or even just drop a link so we can actually check it out for you..
Can't remove the "read-only" attribute in IT Support ·
...I’ve been riding with file managers since the days of MS-DOS and Win 3.0. I went from Commander to Windows Commander and eventually landed on Total Commander, mostly just using things like "Files"-"Change attributes" to get stuff done. It's just how I work. Honestly, I never run into those kinds of issues 😁
Wi-Fi booster/extender recommendations? in Computer Peripherals ·
Honestly, nothing beats a hardwired LAN cable. It’s the gold standard unless you’re stuck using a tablet or smartphone that just won't play nice with wires.
That "booster" gadget you're looking at? It’s really just a repeater. It basically grabs whatever weak signal it can find through all the interference and tries to rebroadcast it. Because of that, you're usually looking at speeds that are at least half as fast as if you were sitting right next to the router on a PC.
If the computer in that room is running a cheap USB Wi-Fi dongle without an actual antenna, you should probably swap it out for something beefier—like a TP-Link model with a dedicated external antenna. Having that physical antenna can boost your signal strength by up to 20 dB, which is huge.
(And honestly, this specific repeater doesn't even have an external antenna, it just hides those tiny internal ones inside 😢)
Best cleaning software? in IT Support ·
...and honestly, don't even think about touching "SpyHunter." I’ve seen way too many people on various forums wrecking their entire systems because of that junk—they ended up having to wipe everything and reinstall Windows just to fix the mess it made. 😢 ...plus, you won't find it listed on any legitimate software site or any actual list of reputable antivirus programs.
Meta won't load for me in IT Support ·
I honestly have no clue who the most popular one is, since he isn't even in the top 20 pages of the rankings. And look, if his main claim to fame is being the lightest on RAM, then he’s basically useless.

Some people try to use him as an "excuse" for why they can't play games online, but it's honestly such a weak argument. It would be way easier to just go to a verified game server and temporarily disable their antivirus—which, let's be real, most decent AV software actually gives you the option to do anyway. Then, once they're done gaming and ready to hop back on the web, they could just turn it back on. 🙂

Uninstall Opera,
run a scan on your computer with AdwCleaner and clear out whatever it finds... then go ahead and install Norton

Where on earth did you get that "360" from? 🤦It’s like those people who go out and download SpyHunter, only to spend the next three days whining because they had to wipe their entire OS and start from scratch after running a scan.

PS: Just look at this—you can see what the rest of the world is actually using when it comes to free antivirus software...
Windows crashed?!?!!?? in IT Support ·
...I've already told a few people that this thing is total garbage. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if it was actually designed as malware. There are so many free antivirus programs out there that you can find one that isn't even mentioned on any major lists—just check out the antivirus rankings over on CNET downloads, for instance.

Try to grab a screenshot of whatever error message is popping up on your screen and post the image here so we can actually see what's going on and try to help.

...try flipping those antennas to a horizontal position for the 2.4 band, and maybe try the device antennas on the other floor too. Let me know if you notice any actual difference in the signal strength?
See, those tiny little antennas tend to bleed signal up and down when they’re pointing straight up. So, by tilting them this way, you should be able to grab a much better signal.
give this a shot https://www.dropbox.com/s/wtzf0as1ka...vista.reg?dl=0

or maybe try this one https://mega.co.nz/#!ItI1lKCR!CsengC...XvnrfV-ms7-c-c
just hit the "reset icon"
Inactive window - help please!! in IT Support ·
...it happens all the time, honestly. You’ll be gaming or working, and suddenly the mouse cable just gives up the ghost right where it meets the base. One tiny fray, one centimeter away from the mouse itself, and boom—your cursor starts flying off toward the corner of your monitor.
At that point, you've really only got two moves: either bite the bullet and grab a brand new mouse, or get some tweezers, crack the thing open, and try to shorten the wire by rerouting it inside.
Help with Google folder... in IT Support ·
? Just check to see if it isn't some random browser plugin you can just yank out... besides, AdwCleaner is actually pretty good at sniffing out stuff like that so you can just Delete it.
Connecting to Wi-Fi on a Dell Latitude in IT Support ·
placidmaker11 said:I’m running Service Pack 2 on my old laptop and everything works just fine. You just need a network adapter that actually supports wireless along with its specific connection software.

you gotta have Service Pack 3 or at least that specific Windows XP update—KB893357... otherwise, that WPA2 Wi-Fi adapter isn't going to do squat.

... and you should probably get Service Pack 3 installed if you want your Wi-Fi actually working on Windows XP.

Lawrence Barnes64 said:what kind of antivirus are you running?

🤦...doesn't matter. We already nailed down what caused that spike. Otherwise, people would just claim it's because new PCs and fresh OS installs spend those first few days downloading a ton of background updates for apps and the system itself... plus there's the whole thing about how we can limit things like cache and history in our browsers.
That’s totally standard; they ship boards from the factory with that jumper set exactly like that (5VSB jumper). On my rig, the mouse and keyboard stay lit up even when the PC is powered down, and I haven't touched the jumper settings at all. If it really bugs you, though, you can check the manual and tweak it if you want.
