Amanda Lopez50 said:First off, Maria Peterson is right—professional translations aren't cheap, and you're basically asking us to do all that work for you here for free. 😉

...and now, let's set the salt aside. 🙂 That question was phrased a bit poorly...
Basically, movie titles need to be translated based on the actual content. If you don't do that, you end up with translations that just don't make any sense. For instance, if I were... Keeping Up with the Kardashians Literally translated. Down with the SteinsThe title is basically just a play on words that doesn't really connect to the content. Since I don't quite get the joke, a literal translation probably won't make any sense in relation to the movie either. 🙂 And that’s where things start to get complicated.
Some of these titles aren't actually problematic. I don't see why Confetti couldn't just be Confetti, especially since I assume the title carries some specific weight within the context of the movie. 🙂 It’s the same deal with Something New—sometimes a simple title really is the best way to go. Some titles can be tricky, though. Take Waist Deep; you could just take it literally and end up with something totally bland like "Up to the waist," or you could go for a metaphorical angle that might feel out of place, like an allusion to wasting away. I’m still not quite following the logic behind Fried Worms, either. If that’s considered a mistake, then a literal translation is probably fine. You aren't the one to blame if the filmmakers decided on a stupid title. 😁 If it’s actually part of the title, it might be a subtle nod to a character's poor grasp of English. That kind of nuance can sometimes get lost in translation, but it works beautifully when done right. Take Adam Abel, for example—one of the characters there isn't a native speaker, so his cursing is all messed up. Because of that, the translator keeps using "For the sake of f**k" instead of the grammatically correct "For f**k's sake." It feels wrong, but it perfectly captures the character's struggle. You see similar cleverness in how they handled the translation for All to be enlightened by Jonathan Safran Foer, where the protagonist also struggles with his English. 👍Looking at these titles, though... why even bother making movies like this in the first place? 😉

🙂

Look, it’s one thing to slap a title on a massive cinematic hit like Eragon, Little Miss Sunshine, or Deja Vu. No one complains about that. But when you start doing it for the home video market, that’s where things actually get complicated, because...
Most of these headlines are absolute garbage.
Nobody actually wants to sit through those movies just to translate them. If you want to make money, the translation has to be engaging enough to actually sell. Watching the same stuff over and over again is just a waste of time.

So far, I’ve realized that everyone here seems to be tripping up over translations—not when it comes to major theatrical releases, but specifically with those straight-to-video titles. I’ll throw out a few examples, and honestly, I think most of you are completely clueless.

That’s exactly why IMDb exists. You just head over to the site, type in the movie title, read the synopsis, and you're done. There's really no need to actually sit through the film when the plot summary already tells you exactly how much garbage you're dealing with. 😉 At the end of the day, you have to sell movies too, which is why catchy titles play such a massive role in the business.
Don't act surprised when a movie like *The Football Factory* gets titled *Fanaticism*, or when *Intermission* is renamed *Bloody Break*. It’s just how things work. 😁

If you're talking about the one from 1959, then YES!

Personally, I think the movie is totally 👍

Oh... So you're saying the hijacking never happened and that plane never even went down?
I'm not quite following what you mean by a lie...

I’d like to ask the moderators to keep this thread open for now—feel free to lock it after Christmas.

Since everyone is such an expert on avoiding terrible translations, here is a list of movie titles. I want to see who can come up with the best American equivalents on the fly... let's see how much you actually know. 🙂

WAIST DEEP
KEEPING UP WITH THE STEINS
SOMETHING NEW
IDLEWILD
SIXTY SIX
HOW TO EAT A FRIED WORMS
CONFETTI

There you go. Let's see if all those people lecturing me about bad translations are actually as smart as they claim to be.

Propaganda? 😱

The only movies worth mentioning this year are Munich, Little Miss Sunshine, and United 93.
Everything else is just cinematic junk.

The editing and production on this film are honestly terrible...
While watching it, I couldn't shake the feeling that it was just some mediocre Sunday afternoon TV movie...
John Malkovich shows up in literally three scenes, and he’s awful in all of them...

mistybear52 said:It’s been a long time since I felt this let down, much like with Miami Vice. The movie is terrible and honestly awful. I strongly suggest skipping it. You can imagine how boring it was—an hour before the end, I was just sitting there wondering when it would finally be over and why I didn't just watch White Sands or that silly comedy about the remote control instead. I never really cared for Foxx, but Farrell definitely disappointed me

Man... what can I say? That's just what happens when you go in expecting an ACTION movie...
I’m requesting that this thread be closed immediately. Most people here clearly have NO CLUE what they're actually talking about...

I haven't seen this much total nonsense piled up in one single place in a long time...

It's honestly pathetic...
nimblemarlin17 said:To be fair, places like AMC Theatres and Broadway actually care about their customers. They offer stuff like online ticket bookings, discount cards, free garage parking, special screenings, and more. If you’re feeling nostalgic for how much harder things were at the old cinemas, that’s on you—not the new theaters, which are a hundred times better than the old ones. Whatever.

Maybe one day, once you figure out who's really pulling the strings behind AMC Theatres and making everything look so perfect for us mere mortals (aka the customers), you'll be praying to God that this topic ever comes up again, hoping your post somehow gets deleted...

Uffff, thank God for free tickets!

This movie is seriously, TRULY good.
While the script and Gong Li's performance are definitely his weakest points, everything else about it is fantastic.

Definitely worth a watch...

Jose Miller17 said:...I'm not even sure where to start...maybe from the beginning, when that failed hero recites a prayer from the Quran while the streets of New York City look like veins in some massive organism...that tragic chaos within the American system (like those military exercises where they're still dealing with simulated Russian threats 🙄)...the sheer scale of such a hellish concept...it's a brilliant parable when an airplane vanishes from radar and nobody knows where it is, much like a society where nothing truly exists until it hits CNN...or those final scenes where everyone is praying for the exact same thing at once...some in English, others in Arabic...you have to wonder if even the powers above weren't clear on what was happening in that moment...Greengrass has such an eye for detail and understands pacing perfectly...he knows that seeing the towers just for a split second in the background through a window is more haunting than any fireball of judgment...maybe he could have delayed the climax a bit—pushed it to the three-quarter mark instead of halfway through—but I'm splitting hairs now...it's a great film regardless...

YES!

Pretty solid movie.
I have a few gripes, though—mainly with the script. I wasn't a huge fan of how much focus is placed on air traffic control and the controllers working that day right at the start, only for us to shift over to what was happening on Flight 93 later on. In the final half hour, the controllers basically drop out of the picture entirely, and you lose that thread. It felt like a bit of a narrative gap to me.

That said, everything else works well, and I’d definitely recommend giving it a watch. Like I mentioned before, there isn't any forced patriotism here; it's just a look at ordinary people caught in the most unexpected and stressful situation imaginable.

There's this series that started airing in the USA last year...
It stars Jason Lee playing, you guessed it, Earl. After he wins $100,000,000 in the lottery, he gets hit by a car. While recovering in the hospital, he catches a glimpse of karma while watching a talk show on TV—basically, "do good things and good things happen; do bad things and bad things follow." Armed with this new philosophy, he puts together a list of all the wrongs he's committed in his life and decides to fix them one by one, working with a modest $100,000 budget...

While it might not be laugh-out-loud hilarious (like the first season of Arrested Development), it’s definitely fun and easy to watch. I'd recommend the first season—which runs for 24 episodes—to anyone who enjoys quick, 20-minute sitcoms...

Hannah Perez3 said:Of course he's a producer powerhouse, obviously—that's common knowledge! But he’s still the worst copy-paster in history... those two things aren't mutually exclusive.

But if he really is just a copy-paster, then he's the BEST one out there, because those recycled films are pulling in billions at the box office...
