Used PC builds: What are they worth? in Desktops ·
crimsonstag84 said:A build like that is basically worth $1667. If it’s only a few months old, you could definitely squeeze by at just under $1333.

Honestly, asking $4,200 wouldn't even be out of line...

especially since everything still has a warranty.
Best PC build for graphic design? in Desktops ·
cosmicbison11 said:Hey,

I'm looking for a PC for graphic design.

I use Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.
My work covers everything from logos and web graphics to Flyers and even massive 50ft posters.

I need help picking the right specs for smooth workflow.

From what I know, I don't necessarily need an i7, is an i5 still enough?

Should I go with 8-16 GB of RAM?
An SSD plus an HDD?
And does the GPU really matter that much?
Also, which monitor would give me decent color accuracy without breaking the bank?

Thanks a lot!

What kind of budget are we talking about here?
Paying cash or using a credit card?
You want to hit up a Best Buy in person, or just order online and have it shipped to your door?
Jeremy Fowler4 said:Bryan Taylor6, look, the Intel Core i3-6100 is way faster than the older i3 gen, and honestly, it’s cheaper too. You want DDR4 because that chip was basically built for it. Pairing it with DDR3 would be a mistake. Plus, expect DDR4 prices to drop soon anyway.

With Haswell, you could easily step up to an i5, so you're covered either way.👍
Architecture doesn't matter much—whether it's B150 H110 or whatever chipset you pick, any GPU will work as long as there's a PCIe slot, and they all have one. Also, it doesn't matter if it's PCIe 3.0 or 2.0; the card will run fine regardless.

Regarding RAM, capacity matters more than speed. With your budget, you can grab whatever you need without breaking a sweat.
Since you aren't planning on overclocking, a board from $150 is more than enough for your needs.

konfa Centro gives you a board with 4 RAM slots and an i5 processor for a tiny price jump.

And even under $300, you can find decent monitors with VA panels, maybe even some IPS if you're lucky.

I'm mostly just wondering what you guys think about Dell in general, and specifically that V15 series?

Honestly, I can't get behind laptops at this price point if they only offer a 1-year warranty.

👍 Genius move right there 😁

Linus has two Broadwell-E Xeons sitting there... 22 cores, 44 threads each... probably for five bucks a pop.😲

wiredotter14 said:Why go for a Core i7 instead of a Ryzen?

If they're actually looking at an upgrade path, they should grab the i3 6098 which is $296, especially since that Core i3 is $237 with a cooler. For $59 more (honestly, the gap is smaller because you need a better motherboard for a Ryzen than for Coffee Lake), you get a chip that'll crush a Core i7 in most multithreaded games—not to mention having an actual upgrade path regardless of which power supply you buy (Ryzen 7 aren't toys anymore)

I figured putting a quad core in his build gave him a cheaper way to upgrade later. Anything on AM4 is going to be a dead end soon anyway.

I skipped Intel because upgrading later costs a fortune, and honestly, that i3 just feels off to me, regardless of the 2core + hyper threading.

crimsonstag84 said:Why go with the FX 4300? I guess it just depends. 😛

I guess this is just a look at the AMD FX 4320 processor. It seems like a fairly standard mid-range option for builds from that era.

It’s basically the same card, just with 4GB of VRAM. I guess there's a slight edge there, but on a budget like this, it probably isn't worth the extra cash.

If he picks that one instead, I'm out. 👍

I’ll take any suggestion, haha. Could be an entirely different build for $1167...

Link isn't working for you :/

It works. My bad 😁

@Fl @Tron
What’s your take on the rest of the components to pair with that GPU?

Well, you listed that same GPU earlier. This setup is a much better move than what you had before, mostly because you actually have an upgrade path if you decide to level up later.
If you can scrape together another $100, an FX 8300 fits easily into the budget.

I wouldn't buy a blank DVD at that price point if it were free.

for $1167 you can't run a high-end GPU without cutting corners elsewhere:

1x LC POWER Cosmo Cool CC-95
1x Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3P, sAM3+

If it slows down $33 because of the case, even an fx8300 will just stall out right there.

the only difference I see is M.2 versus 2.5'', but honestly, I don't get why that matters much.

it's because you probably won't even have an M.2 slot on your motherboard
while the other one just plugs into a standard SATA port.
