Zachary Barrett4 said:I'm running a Cooler Master CNPS10X Perform. Honestly, just like you pointed out regarding the CPU bottleneck, I’d swap both the processor and the GPU. My 570 handles basically anything I throw at it, but it's hitting a wall with modern titles because of that 1280 MB VRAM limit. Those are my two main reasons for upgrading.

I'm leaning towards an NVIDIA GTX too, 😬 mostly for the performance boost and better power efficiency.

Look, man, just grab an AMD FX-8300—it's the fastest way to go—they have them at Best Buy for $338, pair it with a decent NVIDIA GTX, and you'll be able to play whatever you want. 😳

darkowl72 said:Look, if I were you, I’d just grab a new GPU first and see how things hold up. Dropping $1,500 on an AMD FX processor doesn't seem like a smart move to me; it isn't much of an upgrade over that 955BE you're running now. Honestly, if you slap a decent aftermarket cooler on what you have—something you can reuse for future builds anyway—you could probably get some solid overclocking out of it...

If you end up hating the performance, then look into a full platform swap. That's where the real money goes since you'll need a new motherboard, CPU, and RAM all at once. What you've got right now isn't even that bad...

Your current motherboard and power supply should handle overclocking fine, so don't sweat those...

Nah, darkowl72, that Phenom is going to be a massive bottleneck here... especially when paired with an NVIDIA GTX 970, even if it's overclocked...
An AMD Radeon R9 280 might actually work okay with that setup.

I’m leaning towards the AMD FX-8300 + NVIDIA GTX 970 combo, plus a cooler if you don't have one.

genius sw hf2.1 1205.

I heard Octane is way better, plus it comes in 7 different colors if nothing 😁

The only real difference is the color swap... and honestly, who cares?$33 meh, they're both membrane keyboards, so there's zero difference...

Roger Mitchell4 said:you could fit speakers plus $300 more for a CM Storm Octane in that budget$33 (you listed the Devastator).

you didn't even include speakers in your own build... and the Octane isn't much better than the Devastator, so you're just wasting $33

whatever, your money, your call.

you could probably squeeze something in for $1700, starting with an LC CC 95 since I wasn't planning on overclocking anything

I don't follow. What's the difference? You have a total budget for the whole rig... everything fits if you want it to. Just grab a cheaper cooler if that's the issue.

They added those FX 8300s too. Cheaper than buying from Best Buy. I threw in a better cooler just in case you decide to overclock later so you aren't swapping parts down the road.

Timothy Kim60 said:Why bother with the 290 x when you could just grab a 290 for $25 right now? There’s basically zero difference between those two GPUs. The 290 x isn't worth the extra cash.

+1
Paying more for a measly 2-5% bump in performance makes no sense. If you're looking at what a 290 x costs, you might as well just pick up a gtx 970 instead.

I want a store where I can walk in, pick out something like an Intel Core i3
and grab 5 units. Or pick out RAM and buy 10 sticks.

The whole premise here is a total disaster. Honestly, I shouldn't have even bothered posting,
since nobody actually reads this stuff anyway.

Why the attitude? You didn't mention you were buying in bulk, nor did you explain why you need it in person right now.

Any major retailer should have stock ready—if not on the shelf, then at their distributors, which is just a day or two of waiting...

Future is the same deal, Best Buy only has 3 out of 12 Intel Core i5 processors in stock.

It’s not even that much cheaper than buying it online or wherever else...

I can install the software for the hardware, but it's useless without the drivers. It's the exact same headache in the virtual Windows XP as it is in Windows 7.

I set up that Virtual Windows XP mode and it works fine, but like I said, it still won't run the Microsoft software installation (for the TV tuner). I have no idea what people mean by guest additions. All I did was install the Virtual Windows XP mode called Windows6.1-KB958559-x64-RefreshPkg.msu along with the relevant Hotfix.

This pops up when the installation crashes inside the virtual Windows XP:

Usually, you don't need anything extra to install this besides the software itself. On Windows XP, the installer runs without any drama. I just grabbed VirtualBox, so I'll give that a shot. Thanks for the tip.

if you're running Windows 7 Ultimate or lower
you've got this option:
right-click the driver, go to properties, then the compatibility tab, and check "Run this program in compatibility mode for:"
pick Windows XP and that should do it.

Since Future didn't have the LC-CC-120, I grabbed it from census.gov instead. Should arrive tomorrow too.

Nice setup 😁

Just grab that one and pocket the extra cash. For $333 plus tax, you're getting an IPS monitor with a 3-year warranty. You won't find a better deal than that anywhere else.🕺
