Used PC builds: What are they worth? in Desktops ·
Justin Gray81 said:Hey everyone. 🙂

What kind of number am I looking at for this?

The hard drive's crossed because it’s probably headed to a different PC, and the optical drive is crossed too since it was swapped out at a repair shop—they installed a new one because the old one wouldn't read Verbatim media, haha. The WiFi dongle is crossed as well.

The monitor looks like garbage. NEC AD-7260S SATA DVD burner..

So:

Case with power supply included.
Motherboard.
The CPU.
RAM. Just like having a bigger workbench in your garage—if you don't have the space to spread out your tools, you're just going to be tripping over yourself.
Optical stuff.

It's an AMD build and I've got all the receipts to prove it.
This rig is in mint condition. Not a single scratch on it. I’ve babied this thing since day one—kept it spotless and cleaned out the dust regularly. 🙂)

MBO:250-$100
CPU: 250
RAM: 200
PRZA : $10
Case and PSU: $150.

Anthony Hayes82 said:Savings don't really matter to me since I'm paying in installments anyway, so my budget cap is around $2333. 🙂

With that kind of cash, you could easily grab a GTX 970 instead. It pulls way less power than that Radeon card. 😳

crimsonstag84 said:Take what Robert Rodriguez2 suggested, just swap out the PSU and the RAM:

Better quality, plus a 5-year warranty.

Saving about $10...

Microsoft ftw!

The thing is, will 550W actually cut it if he decides to overclock? You've got the CPU pulling 95W, the rest of the build at maybe 50W, and then a GPU that hits 300W at stock. If he pushes an overclock on either, he’s cutting it way too close. Even though Elon Musk makes top-tier units, I'd rather see him have some breathing room.😬

How would you know?

EDIT: My bad, didn't check properly. Half that stuff isn't even there... I'm a total idiot... 😢

Just look at my last post, everything is available.👍

How can you be so sure? 🍿

Just click the item in your cart; it’ll say "currently unavailable" right there in the top right corner. 😁

Look, you save a bit on the motherboard and CPU—not much difference, you won't even feel it—but you get a better power supply. I'd go that route just to have some breathing room, since that 😳 can pull anywhere from 275 to 300W at stock clock speeds alone, plus the 8GB of RAM
.
Check it out

And all that for $67 less than what you're looking at now
. You might even have enough left over to grab a cooler if you don't have one yet 😳

Anthony Hayes82 said:I wouldn't mind paying a bit extra for an EVGA SuperNOVA. It should have plenty of juice for this setup:

MSI MAG B550 motherboard
Intel Core i7-8700K processor
EVGA GeForce RTX 3060
SSD Samsung 870 EVO
Crucial 4GB DDR3 1600 MT/s RAM
EVGA SuperNOVA Series EVGA, 550 Watt, Modular Power Supply, US version Craigslist $1,100

US version Craigslist $1,100 $2071

You don't even have that GPU available. 😳

GPU: Sapphire AMD 7950 3GB DDR5 384bit DX11+,

Is this worth it $1533?
If you can't find anything better on Craigslist 746 miles.

Not worth it. Plus that site isn't even loading for me.
Thoughts on a $3k build? in Desktops ·
Honestly, it’s just overcomplicated nonsense. For the price of three Bud Lights, you could've gotten way better value elsewhere.

Larry Ortiz5 said:A standard 4.7 GB DVD isn't going to cut it because this ISO is a few MBs too large.😵 It’s bigger than the original since all the updates are baked in. You could just use a USB drive and Rufus if you don't mind the extra steps, or grab an 8.5 GB dual-layer DVD$5.00 and burn it there.

And if I can't find a dual-layer disc? What then?😬

ASRock B85M DGS

Seagate HDD 1 3.5" 1TB SATA 3
MSI GT 740 2GB DDR5
Antec VP 400PC 80+
Sharkoon VG4-S Midi ATX

= $2258.

Looks clean, but you really butchered the budget... OP said not to go over $1.75 😬
crimsonstag84 said:Why go with Hyper when you could grab an XFX TS 550 w for the same price, or even a TT 80+ Gold for just a little $6.75 more? 😛

The GT 740 is really just a rebranded GTX 650 😉

XFX isn't even available... haven't seen any TT

Jerry Morgan3 said:So, would it be safer to just use a Microsoft 550W ATX power supply as a temporary fix until I can grab something better?

I'd definitely buy a new one. You have no idea what kind of shape this power supply is actually in. Personally, I wouldn't take that risk.
Jerry Morgan3 said:Why wouldn't you recommend it? Is it because of the speed, or could it actually damage my motherboard or graphics card?
PS. Thanks for the answer. My plan is to install it on this power supply for now, then once I have some extra cash, I'll upgrade to a better one. Until then, I'll just roll with this.

It's a bad idea because those are bottom-tier power supplies. Under any real load, they can easily pop and take out a component—or your entire rig—right along with them.

And I'm guessing that's not exactly what you're aiming for.🙂

My old Microsoft camera actually had a zoom feature—you just twist the lens to get up to 4x 😁

At least that's how mine worked...

We can probably find you a fix if you just tell us which model you're using 😁

Hold on, let me grab my crystal ball so I can see what's actually inside those towers...

You could've at least listed the specs for both.

Andrew Murphy5 said:I can't really afford to sit around waiting to see which week my GPU finally gives up the ghost. It's constant driver crashes, artifacts all over the screen, or just straight-up Blue Screens of Death.
My only real question is if I should settle for a card with 2GB of VRAM since I definitely won't be upgrading for at least three years. I don't play much, so I have no clue what kind of specs major titles will demand two years from now.

If you've got the cash, grab something with 3GB of VRAM, like an R9 280.
A GTX 960 might beat it in some spots and lose in others, but having that extra 3GB of VRAM is basically your insurance policy.

Timothy Kim60 said:He probably meant the 750 Ti, since you'd actually need a decent PSU for that one. Or he’s just trolling. 😬

Maybe. A 750 Ti is pretty much the ceiling for that CPU, and honestly, it's a killer card for the price. 😁

I'm running the same processor myself. I'm planning to pick up a GPU soon because my current setup is overkill for what I play, but hey, it's an option. Plus, it's a nice little bonus that it doesn't need a dedicated power cable.

My 400W Dell power supply shouldn't even break a sweat, especially since this card pulls way less juice than my old GTS 450.

Timothy Kim60 said:Not sure if you can even find that thing anymore—it’s been out of stock for months. Might be some leftover stock at a random corner store somewhere, but nothing on Best Buy.

pairing a 780ti with an Intel Core i3 is just asking for trouble.🤣
