Issues connecting PC to Smart TV wirelessly? in IT Support ·
I own a smart TV, a General Electric "42PFL6007K/12" and I was actually planning to pick up some kind of adapter just to get my laptop screen to show up on the TV. However, a buddy of mine insisted—quite firmly, I might add—that I don't need to waste money on extra hardware since I already have a smart TV.
I spent some time digging through Google, trying to find a workaround, but I’m hitting a wall here. My first logical step was to get the TV hooked up to my home network. Just to clarify the setup: my router is sitting right there in the same room as the TV—no walls, no furniture, absolutely nothing blocking the signal.

Using the remote, I hit the home button, navigated over to smart TV , and then... nothing. The screen just goes black, and a message pops up saying “to connect this television to your home network, you will need a router and an Ethernet cable”. Below that, there's this blue bar just crawling back and forth—searching for a signal, I assume—and it's been sitting there spinning its wheels for ten minutes now with zero luck.

Honestly, I am completely baffled—why on earth is it telling me I need a physical cable when the whole point of a smart TV is to connect wirelessly?

Much appreciated

Let me try to clarify my situation, just so we're on the same page.
I have an MP3 file that's about three minutes long—nothing crazy—and I’m looking to merge that audio with a GIF to create a video file (either AVI or MP4, honestly, I don't have a strong preference)
My ultimate goal is to upload that finished video directly to my Facebook wall so my friends can actually watch it rather than just seeing a static image.
Does anyone have any clever ideas on how I might pull this off?

I found this absolutely stunning GIF that I’m dying to sync up with an MP3 track—but now I’ve hit a bit of a wall regarding the export process.
I actually tried converting the GIF into an AVI file first, but the resulting video is only about one second long—which is a real problem, given that I need the final product to run for at least three minutes.
Does anyone out there happen to know the right way to export this properly?
Thanks so much for the guidance—I'm definitely going to dive in and give it a shot using those steps
There are a million tutorials on YouTube about how to remove hair from a subject using select/refine edges—but there is a catch. Every single one of those videos features a perfectly solid, uniform background. It’s easy when you're working against a studio backdrop! I am currently struggling with a photo where the background is incredibly busy and uneven, and my attempts at separating the hair from the scenery have been a total disaster. I would truly appreciate it if anyone could share some advice or a better workflow for tackling this kind of complexity.

Having issues with Google Drive syncing? in IT Support ·
What on earth is going on with Google Drive lately? I’ve been seeing a massive wave of people complaining that their Drive has gone completely haywire—syncing just refuses to work—and they keep getting hit with this specific error message:

Sorry, Google Drive needs to quit.
An unknown issue occurred and Google Drive needs to quit. Error: 4ADB

I have spent quite a bit of time digging through various troubleshooting tips online, but honestly—to my frustration—none of them seem to actually fix anything.
Does anyone happen to know what might be causing this mess?
Having issues with Google Drive syncing? in IT Support ·
I’ve been relying on Google Drive for years now—it’s been smooth sailing until just a few days ago.
As most of you probably know, the whole point of this setup is that anything I drop into my local Google Drive folder on my PC automatically uploads to the cloud, making everything accessible from just about anywhere.
However, when I logged onto the web interface today, I realized that three or four folders I moved into my local directory a couple of days back are simply missing from the online view.
I’m honestly at a loss here—everything is configured to launch Google Drive right alongside Windows at startup.
If I check the system tray, the Google Drive icon is sitting there perfectly fine, and it even explicitly states "sync complete."
Does anyone have any insight into why my local files aren't matching what I see on the web?
Which Windows version is best for this laptop? in IT Support ·
Man, that guy is out of his mind—trying to cram "Windows 7 Ultimate" and Norton onto a single 1 GB drive? That’s just asking for trouble.
I completely agree that you'd get much better performance if you stuck with "Windows 7 Starter."
Plus, you really should pick an antivirus that won't hog all your resources; personally, I’d suggest "Bitdefender Free Edition". It’s what I use on my own machine, and honestly, I barely even notice it running in the background.
Best tools for fixing bad clusters? in IT Support ·
It’s essentially just a basic laptop—something intended solely for scrolling through Facebook and nothing else (specifically for an elderly relative)
So, from what I can gather, it might actually be functional for a little while longer—provided I run a scan with HDD Regenerator first to see if it's salvageable.

Alright, I will get right on that—though I suspect it might take quite a while to do it properly

Windows 7
I’ve just discovered that there are 3 bad sectors on my hard drive—it’s a bit unsettling, to be honest. A close friend mentioned that within Windows, there is a fantastic built-in tool specifically designed to fix these damaged areas.
His advice was pretty straightforward: apparently, you just open the Command Prompt, type in chkdsk /r and then simply wait for the process to finish its work. He claims that once the task is complete, those problematic sectors are effectively isolated—almost like they're "cemented" over so they can't be used anymore.
Is his assessment actually accurate?
If he's right, I have one more nagging question—once these bad sectors are isolated, is that isolation permanent (is it somehow recorded in the BIOS), or will they resurface and start messing with my system again after I perform a fresh reinstall of Windows?

I have also come across two other programs: HD Tune and HDD Regenerator. I'm curious to know if these tools are actually superior to using the standard chkdsk command.

I have already taken care of all of those steps.
What laptop specs should I get for... in Laptops ·
My brother is looking to pick up a new laptop, but he's feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the different specs out there—he really needs some guidance to find the right fit for his specific needs. To make things easier for everyone, I've put together a few details to help narrow down the search.
The computer will be used strictly for:
1 - Browsing Meta
2 - Occasional, basic photo editing in Adobe Photoshop

He'd like to keep the budget under $3,000 $0.00 and needs something he can actually pick up locally in San Francisco
I've been browsing online and found a few models myself, so if anyone could point us toward a good recommendation or a reliable seller, I’d truly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance!
Trouble downloading apps from the Play Store in IT Support ·
Whenever I head over to the https://play.google.com/store/apps and try to download an app, I run into this frustrating message "This app is (or isn't) compatible with some of your devices". When I click on it, a dropdown menu appears—showing me the name of my old phone instead of this new one—which makes it impossible to actually download anything.
I have scoured every single corner of my Google account settings—searching everywhere, really—but I simply cannot find where to delete that old device or register this new one.
Does anyone happen to know how to fix this?

Well, I just tried adding a shortcut for Thunderbird into the startup folder—as suggested—but wouldn't you know it? After a full reboot of my PC, there is still absolutely nothing showing up in the systray.

Seriously, someone please help me out—I just can't wrap my head around how to make this work.
Look, I'm certainly no tech wizard who can just troubleshoot complex issues on my own.
That is exactly why I am turning to this community for some guidance.
To reiterate my original question: "Is there any way to keep Thunderbird running constantly in the system tray and have it launch automatically whenever I boot up Windows?"

Good grief, it seems as though nobody has any clue how to resolve this particular issue.

She’s absolutely right—I completely misspoke and wrote DreamMail when I clearly meant IncrediMail. My apologies!
So, here is the situation: I installed the firetray add-on in Thunderbird, and finally, it seems to be working—when I close Thunderbird, it retreats to the system tray and sends me those much-needed notifications when new mail arrives. However, there is still a lingering issue—whenever I restart my computer (or just boot it up for the day), Thunderbird isn't sitting there in the system tray waiting for me; I have to manually launch the program myself.
Does anyone know if there is a way to ensure it stays in the system tray automatically right after Windows boots up?

ironcyclist58 said:How often do you have Thunderbird set to check for new mail?

I am having a bit of trouble locating that setting—I've been digging through tools/options, but I simply can't find the option anywhere.
