Has anyone checked out that recent DVD/Blu-ray release of the 1993 Hammersmith live show? I finally downloaded it yesterday and started watching—man, it’s incredible. He sings like an absolute beast. People always give Tracy G a hard time because the solos on those classic tracks sound different live than they did on the studio albums, but honestly, he nails it.
Personally, I’ve never come across a vocalist from any corner of the metal world who actually blew me away quite like Dio. He had this massive vocal range and an incredible sense of conviction; when he sang, you genuinely believed every single word coming out of his mouth. Whether he was tearing through a heavy track or handling a soulful ballad like "catch the rainbow"—he absolutely shined! Honestly, he’s the only singer besides Freddie Mercury and Ian Gillan (back in the 70s) whom I could actually picture stepping onto an opera stage to sing alongside a world-class diva.
Vocally speaking, everyone there just can't touch Dio, even if you consider guys like Halford, Maine, or Hughes aren't exactly at their absolute peak anymore. But man, the Scorpions were solid, and Metallica killed it with that medley. Biff did a great job too.
They’ve always seemed kind of overlooked here, stuck in the shadow of other hard rock giants. I haven't sat through every single one of their albums, though I know all the hits. Personally, I actually dig that pop-metal phase they had back in the 80s—they had that more polished sound then, leaning closer to Bon Jovi or Poison than to AC/DC or their own raw stuff from the 70s. I have a feeling one of those 70s records will end up being my favorite, though. Tyler and Joe Perry are solid performers, pretty decent vocalist and guitarist, and that chemistry between them has always been the backbone of the band. I was planning on heading to New York City in June, but honestly, I just can't swing the cost right now. I'm hoping someone posts some concert reports in this thread. I caught that last concert they released from Japan last year, and I gotta say, they still absolutely kill it live.
Such an incredible band! I honestly feel like most rock fans who only know their greatest hits view them as just a ballad band, but that’s such a misconception. They have so many killer hard rock tracks that would catch people totally off guard. They definitely hit their peak in the 80s—that was clearly their golden era with all the massive hits and huge stadium tours—but I was actually surprised by how good they were back in the 70s. They were kind of overlooked then, having this much more experimental, unique sound on those early albums that feels like a completely different band compared to their 80s stuff. Plus, seeing them live is a whole different beast; I caught one of their shows once and I’d jump at the chance to see them again if they were playing anywhere near me.

I grabbed this image off the web and now I’m wondering which program I should use to overlay some white text onto it. The picture itself is black and white. I don't want the text sitting inside some clunky white box or rectangle, though—I just want the letters themselves to show up against that solid black background.
Like someone else already pointed out—they’re a solid band playing pure hard rock with a heavy blues influence these days, but unfortunately, they’re never going to shake off those MTV, hair metal, or glam metal labels.
The Beatles were the very first band I fell in love with, and honestly, they’re the reason I even got into rock in the first place. I was 12 years old at the time, and there was this whole period where I listened to nothing else. Eventually, the Beach Boys became huge for me too. I still remember how I used to save every single cent of my allowance just to afford an original Beatles CD—while everyone else my age was saving up for soda or going out with friends. Though, if I recall correctly, the very first CD I ever actually bought was a Queen record back in '99. Even back then, the Beatles were my absolute favorites. I can still picture myself falling asleep countless nights to their music playing off a cassette tape on some cheap, basic boombox. The sound quality was a total disaster, but man, it was pure bliss. Thinking back to those days always brings a smile to my face. I had my phases, of course—the only bands I went through where I actually can't stand them now are Oasis and Nirvana—and there were times when I didn't spin the Beatles as much, but I always found my way back to them. These days, I don't listen to them nearly as often, but they'll always be at the top of my list. Around age 14, I started getting into Queen. A buddy of mine, the same guy who first got me hooked on the Beatles, gave me a Queen Greatest Hits cassette. To be honest, I didn't even like them the first time I heard them. I remember being convinced their biggest hit was "Flash" because that song was everywhere due to the movie, but I really knew nothing about who they actually were. I can't tell you exactly when Queen surpassed the Beatles for me, because the Beatles held onto that top spot for a long, long time. Even though my taste has shifted more toward hard rock than the 60s stuff, the Beatles remain my all-time favorite band right after Queen.
RIP. I think I actually sat through one of his best-of collections just a few days before he passed away. It’s a little heavy thinking about how tracks like Call Me the Breeze and Cocaine became immortalized through versions by Lynyrd Skynyrd and Eric Clapton, though I have to admit, those covers actually hit harder for me than the originals. His songwriting has such a laid-back vibe, so it makes total sense why someone like Mark Knopfler would look up to him. I wouldn’t call myself a massive blues-rock head—unless we're talking about Rory Gallagher's entire discography—and Cale didn't exactly blow me away right off the bat, but looking back, I'd say the guy is definitely underrated.
Airbourne absolutely crushed it! Only 70 minutes on stage, but my ears are still ringing like crazy. I’m heading home now—honestly, nothing else matters after that.
