Where can I find a safe Windows 10 download? in IT Support ·
Karen Doyle72 said:Yeah, but it’s definitely not a "few hours" job—you need years of experience just to wrap your head around half this stuff, which is why most people don't even bother. 😁
But wait, aren't links to those ready-to-go, homemade ISOs actually banned on MyDigitalLife?
I mean, sure, there are tons of tools out there to build your own custom images—and I use them all the time—but posting links to a pre-modded ISO? No way, man. Absolutely not.

Well, I guess what 😛

If you actually know what you're doing, I was thinking it should only take you a few extra hours to get everything properly configured, 👍

Exactly. Though, if you ask nicely, you might just find someone willing to share a link. That’s pretty much how things work here on this forum.

By the way, if I was capable of flashing a custom BIOS on a PC worth over $2,000, then I feel like I can certainly handle custom Windows too! 😁

Michael Jackson10 said:I'd give it a five out of ten. Sure, some people love custom builds, but wouldn't it be fair to at least mention the "alternative"—you know, the original version?

... where a user can actually step in and fix those things themselves.
Especially if you grab a clean image instead of using that "suggested" one from the media creation tool, where Microsoft basically decides how to customize everything for you...

Maybe it's just me: I'm not a fan of that whole next->next->finish installation style. I don't mind clicking through a few settings during setup if they actually ask nicely...

But honestly, I don't think it's quite that simple. You're dealing with a massive amount of registry tweaks, Group Policy settings, various services, and so on. You really need to know exactly what you're doing, and you'll likely need to spend several hours hunting down third-party tools and scripts if you want to tailor everything perfectly to your own specific taste.

That being said, if you happen to find a group of people you truly trust—people who definitely know their stuff—then it might be much easier to just download an ISO they've already put together.

Michael Jackson10 said:Give me a break. With a "custom" build, all you really have is the compiler's "honor system" promising the image is what it says it is.
Think about it. You aren't downloading some ancient stone tablet carved in granite that stays perfect forever. You're downloading freaking Windows 10 where updates are basically mandatory, and those cumulative patches are probably harder to track than three different source codes.

Basically, you think you’ve got this "guaranteed" clean, tailored setup, but then who knows what Microsoft sneaks into an update? They could push ten times more junk through there in a heartbeat...

If you want that theory to actually work, your only option is to install the "custom" version, pray to God that the apps you need don't demand an upgrade, and once everything is set, just rip the Ethernet cord out and never connect to the internet again. Being offline for life is the only way you can truly guarantee you actually have what you think you have...

Basically, what the poet is trying to say is 🤔

Who even cares about the updates? Updates aren't really the issue here.

The real headache is the telemetry and all that bloatware.

I mean, I've never had any reason to go that route with my PC, and honestly, I don't see that happening anytime soon. 😁

Well, if you aren't planning on doing a clean reinstall, then I suppose there isn't much point in downloading them 🤣

And I also think what Karen Doyle72 mentioned is quite valid—Windows usually comes with all sorts of pre-installed bloatware and malware anyway, so it might actually be better to just go with a custom installation 👍

wearymason4 said:Why even bother risking it all on some random third-party site when you can just go straight to the source? It’s way more chill knowing there’s zero chance of running into malware.
That’s exactly why I haven't picked up a single virus or even some annoying junkware in five years.

I mean, if you’re already planning on doing a full reinstall of Windows 10 anyway, then I suppose you shouldn't really worry about malware at all,🤔

you could just run a format C: /U and everything would be perfectly fine again.😁

🤣

Honestly, I can't imagine why anyone in their right mind would bother downloading adult content 😁

Back in the day, maybe fifteen years ago, I suppose that actually made some sense, but nowadays, with high-speed internet being so reliable and streaming 1080p video being absolutely seamless without any trouble finding a site, I really don't see much point in downloading anything at all.🤔

Now I just need to get everything properly acclimated to Windows 10. Thanks again!🙏

Oh, I am just so glad to hear that! 👍

Thanks so much, everyone, let's go Bruce...👍

Well, I did provide you with the link for that specific driver 🙂

I suppose you should just boot up NVIDIA again and see if the sound is working now.

Nathan Jackson56 said:Well, I suppose I'll give that trick from the video another shot... You see, this Dell isn't really a major brand-name build; it was actually custom-ordered using specific components back in 2005. I did end up swapping out the graphics card once the old one finally kicked the bucket, so right now I'm running an ATI Radeon 2600 Pro.
I am currently hunting around for exactly what you mentioned—that setting you suggested I should try to disable.

Just head over to the Device Manager, right-click on the item, go into Properties, hit the Driver tab, and then select Disable device.

You should really take a peek at this video too!

And just a little heads-up, you might want to double-check where you're plugging in that speaker; I'm thinking the ac97 port probably shouldn't go into the light green jack, though I guess it might be configured a bit differently than that.

Nathan Jackson56 said:Yeah, this hardware is basically a relic from 2005... And honestly, the only AC 97 drivers I can actually track down seem to be for 64-bit Windows 8 or even just for Windows XP... There's absolutely nothing out there for Windows 10, so I might as well just sit here and sing a sad song about it.

Well, I suppose you aren't going to find anything for Windows 10, because let's face it, AC 97 became obsolete long before Windows 10 ever arrived.

Maybe try downloading the version for Windows 8 and see if it works for you.

http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/SOU...5-64-bit.shtml

Or perhaps try this one:

https://realtek-download.com/download-ac97/

And you should probably remember to disable the audio on your graphics card.

By the way, is this some specific branded machine, like maybe a Compaq or an HP?

Nathan Jackson56 said:This AC 97 thing... though if I'm remembering correctly, it might not even play nice with any 64-bit Windows versions. I think I'll try the Nvidia drivers instead, thanks!

Yeah, you definitely need that for ac97, and if my memory serves me right, there used to be some kind of conflict with Nvidia drivers back in the day.

I have a vague feeling there was also some sort of Azalia driver involved at one point🤔

Man, it's been ages since then; that hardware is basically a relic from at least 10 or 15 years ago, isn't it?🤣

Nathan Jackson56 said:It isn't actually Soundmax... and I think there might not be any Realtek drivers available for 64-bit systems specifically for this motherboard..
They seem to only offer them for 32-bit versions.
https://www.driveridentifier.com/sca...UBSYS_822C1043
...So, I guess we're looking at another uninstallation then.. 😠

Wait, if they aren't available, how can we say 🤣

https://www.realtek.com/en/component...odecs-software

https://www.realtek.com/en/products/...peripheral-ics

Maybe you could try downloading them directly from the official Realtek website!

You probably need either the HD audio driver or perhaps the ac97 one.

I seem to recall that those Nvidia drivers used to cause a few little conflicts with ac97, so maybe try downloading the Nvidia driver first, installing the audio, and then installing the Nvidia part once the sound is working properly?

Nathan Jackson56 said:It looks like I've run into a little bit of a hiccup with my hardware setup! It seems that the device identified by PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0059&SUBSYS_822C1043&REV_A2\3&241 1e6fe&0&20 is still asking for some further installation to get everything running smoothly. I suppose this might just be one of those minor technical hurdles where the system needs a little extra guidance to recognize the component fully, though I guess we'll have to dig a bit deeper to figure out exactly which driver is missing to get things back on track!
It looks like this falls under the multimedia audio controller events. I think I'll try downloading the Soundmax driver along with that other one mentioned above, and once I've given that a shot, I will definitely let you all know how it goes! Thank you so much for the help, it really is incredibly appreciated. Honestly, though, I can't quite wrap my head around the whole logic behind Windows 10. It feels like they just tell you to grab a coffee while they promise to fix everything, but then you end up struggling for three days straight just to get something working that used to run perfectly on Windows 3.11 for Workgroups immediately after installation... back when you only needed five floppy disks to get set up!😁

It looks like what you've got there is just the Nvidia multimedia driver for the HDMI output, but I guess what you actually need is the specific hardware ID for that sound game multimedia controller.
Audio issues on Windows 10 64-bit in IT Support ·
I was actually wondering, wasn't there more than one version of that motherboard out there? I think one revision used Realtek while another one went with SoundMax.🤔

If you could just head over to your Device Manager, go ahead and open up Properties, then check under the Details tab to find the Hardware ID—if you could post that here, it would be a huge help!

For instance, this is what my Realtek ID looks like:

HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0892&SUBSYS_18498892&REV_1003

Now, if you see this instead of the part I've highlighted:

VEN_11D4

Then it's pretty likely you're looking at SoundMax.

Sandra Nelson said:I wanted to reach out because I picked up a brand-new laptop about eight months ago—specifically this model right here:

I was just browsing through some listings on the HP online store, and I happened to stumble upon this particular laptop model. It looks like a pretty interesting option if you're in the market for something reliable, though I suppose it really depends on what kind of workload you're planning to throw at it! It seems to have a decent set of specs, but I guess I’d love to see more detailed reviews regarding how it handles heavy multitasking before making any big decisions. It might be worth keeping an eye on if there are any upcoming seasonal sales in the US!

Well, I guess I’ve already run into yet another silly little hiccup.

So, here is what seems to be happening: whenever I right-click on my desktop and hover over the "New" option, if I then try to select "Folder," there is this strange little delay. It feels like the system just hangs for about five seconds before the folder actually appears on my screen. It’s almost like the computer is stuttering or catching its breath for a moment. I am not entirely sure how to describe it more clearly, but I suppose you can probably get the gist of what I mean! 😁

I went ahead and downloaded what I thought was the absolute best antivirus software available, grabbed CCleaner as well, and even installed one of those specialized programs that's supposed to hunt down Trojans and all sorts of other digital junk, but honestly, I guess it didn't make a lick of difference because everything stayed exactly the same. After that, I decided to just go through with a full factory reset on my computer to start fresh, but maybe it was for nothing, because even after doing all that, the issue is still there!

I believe my laptop is currently running Windows 10 Home.

Does anyone happen to have a clue what might be causing this? I can't quite figure out if we're looking at a software glitch, or if it might actually be an issue with the hardware itself.

Has anyone else here ever run into this particular issue? I was just wondering if this might be happening to any of you as well.

If I can't manage to figure out what's causing the issue myself, I suppose I'll just end up taking it down to a local repair shop, though I'd certainly love to avoid that extra trip if there's any way to fix it on my own!

Thanks so much!

Do you happen to have any network drives set up, or maybe just one of those slower hard drives or perhaps even a USB stick plugged in there?

I guess this usually happens when you're working with a network drive, so Microsoft Windows just needs a little extra breathing room to map out exactly where everything is located before it can successfully create a new folder.

You’re totally pulling my leg here!

I know there used to be some kind of script that would expand the forum layout, but ever since I did a fresh reinstall of Windows, I just can't seem to track it down anywhere.

And honestly, whenever I try to block the forum.sidebar, the rest of the site layout just completely falls apart.

So, if anyone happens to have that script lying around, I would be much obliged! 👍
Ban and the forum layout in Feedback & Suggestions ·
While I was serving my recent Ban, I noticed that the forum layout actually stretches quite nicely from one edge of my monitor to the other, which is lovely because it eliminates those awkward empty gaps where ads usually sit—though, of course, I still have my ad blocker running to keep things clean! Even so, there’s still this persistent little strip of white space hanging out on the right side of the screen.

I was just wondering, is there any way to achieve that full-width look while I'm still an active member and not under a Ban?
