Guys, please help. Forgive me if this sounds stupid, but I just can't seem to get the spacing right within matrices in Word. For example (2 4 4 6 8)—obviously using square brackets... how do I actually create that space, or rather, how do I create COLUMNS? I figured out the rows—just hit enter... THANKS A MILLION FOR THE HELP!!! YOU'RE SAVING ME! 🙂

Well, you clearly don't even get how to do rows, because that isn't done by hitting Enter. 🙂

If you're trying to build matrices, there's a specific template within the Equation editor—in the 2003 version, the most useful one is in the bottom row. Just pick the "general matrix" option, specify the number of rows and columns you need, and you're all set.

@Gregory Rogers20/">@@Gregory Rogers20... you there?
I honestly thought you’d put in a little effort and try to build something on your own first. Or, at the very least, post a sample table of what you're working on—use fake data if you have to—so we can actually see where you're getting stuck.

Whatever, here’s an example of how I think you want it done.

On the "baza" Sheet, you've got the full roster of players—it's just a list with their rank, handicap, and name.
Once you've finished entering everyone—especially once those handicap numbers are in—the whole list just sorts itself. The numbers and names stay perfectly synced. Every single time you tweak a handicap and hit enter, the auto-sort kicks in again. Done.

On the "groups" Sheet, you just punch in the MIN and MAX for each group, and the data filters itself based on your criteria.
Look, I'm no psychic, so I have zero clue how you imagined this spreadsheet looking. Just tweak it however you need to make it work for you. 🙂

You can grab the file at this link. Sorting automatically using MIN and MAX.

The password for the unpack is:

hmm, I figured you’d at least try to throw some code up here before asking, but nope 😢

Here, just try this Macro (splitting it into two parts since it's huge)

Hey there,😉

I really need some help here. I'm trying to use the insert citation and insert bibliography tools to get my term paper looking right. I actually found a video on Tube showing how to set it all up, but when the guy in the video gets to the 01:34 mark and inserts a citation, the whole bracketed part highlights so he can edit it easily. For some reason, whenever I try to insert a citation, that bracket doesn't highlight for me at all... why?!☕ I've been sitting here staring at this screen for three hours and I'm getting nowhere.😠
What am I doing wrong?🤷...

Pleaseeeee, help me out!😁

Best,

Ugh, I am such a klutz. I finally figured out what went wrong.🤦
I was converting a Word 2007 document into Word 2003 and totally missed the warning message near the citation section. It basically said that since this is an older version of Word, if I actually wanted to use that specific feature, I’d need to move the whole document back into Word 2007.

Why on earth does Word have to be so complicated?🤷...🙂😢🙂🙂

I was honestly hoping you might put in a little bit of elbow grease and try to build something yourself first! If that wasn't possible, perhaps you could have shared a sample spreadsheet of what you're working on—using some dummy data, of course—to show us exactly where you're hitting a wall.

But no worries at all, I've gone ahead and whipped up an example based on how I interpreted your request!

On the "database" Sheet, you'll find a full roster of players, which includes a serial number, their handicap (as a number), and their names.
Once you've finished entering everyone—especially after inputting those handicap numbers—the rows will automatically sort themselves, bringing the corresponding names along with them. Every time you update a handicap and hit enter, that automatic sorting kicks back in immediately.

Then, on the "groups" Sheet, you simply input the MIN and MAX values for each group, and the data filters itself according to those criteria.
Since I'm certainly not a mind reader and can't know exactly how you envisioned your layout, please feel free to tailor this to fit your specific needs! 🙂

You can download the file via this link: Automatic Sorting with MIN and MAX

The password to unpack the file is:
Code:
www-ic-ims-us

Oh my goodness, Kyle, you're going to be the death of me!
You did a lovely job organizing that, but I went ahead and color-coded the database; basically, the main database is where the entire player list lives, and from there, they are partitioned off into other tables representing different groups.
I've also updated the group numbers to reflect actual values now.

For instance, if a group is set from 0-12.4, we run into that pesky "NN" issue again. From what I gather, if a player doesn't have a handicap of exactly '0', the table just displays "NN".
Additionally, the table only prints the numbers alongside the names; this means if a player lacks a handicap, the table skips the row entirely and just writes "NN".
Take a look at this:
image

See, Name12 and Name13 really ought to be in Group B, but it seems the formula is just looking at the first number in the row rather than pulling from the master table, so the number stays stuck up top while Group B just shows "NN" below.

Actually, I preferred the first example more because I could strip out those "NN" entries, though it lacked decimals. I'm not quite sure why you can't manage to include decimals there? I could definitely refine that table further myself.

Anyway, I am sending over two files; I've cleaned things up a bit and clarified the logic.

By the way, if you decide to work on file2 (the one using VBA), you can absolutely pull the group table from file1.

My bad, I just gave you the basics before, but here are the formulas and it handles decimals now. Study it and you can tweak it however you want.

My apologies! I only provided you with the basics, but the formulas are right there for you to work with decimals. If you take some time to study them, you'll be able to customize everything exactly the way you want it.
Best regards,

For the hundredth time now: relying on a formula is just silly because it won't clear out those rows and will just leave "NN" sitting there everywhere.

Does anyone know if we can handle decimals within Visual Basic?

Man, you're wound up. Could've just done it right the first time instead of half-assing it. Honestly, everything works fine for me using the formulas @forrest and Nicholas King gave me. It’s actually way easier than messing with VBA.
You just posted a blank file based on the one I gave you. You didn't even put in a single formula to prove your point that it can't be done with formulas.

Look at this, @Gregory Rogers20/">@@Gregory Rogers20
I don't mind helping out when someone hits a wall. But honestly? You gotta learn how to use your head. In my opinion, you just didn't put in the work.
Look, this forum isn't a homework hotline where you can just drop a problem and expect someone to hand you a finished product on a silver platter. It's here to help when you actually get stuck. If you want everything done for you, go find an expert, explain the job, and pay them for the final result. That's how it works.

Look, if you want proof, here it is: a full-blown tutorial with every single screenshot and all the Macros included. I'm laying it all out just to show you that stuff like this actually takes some actual effort. You've got the guidelines, you've got the links, and yet you still haven't lifted a finger. So, yeah—it's on you now to just copy everything over and apply it to your own file.

- How do I auto-sort and copy everything between the MIN and MAX?

Hey.

I've got this accounting service manual, and my bookkeeping software actually gives me the option to export all my data directly into an Excel spreadsheet. Since I'm currently juggling seven different projects funded by the European Union, I need to sort through specific data points based on the last digit of their identification codes. Basically, I need a way to split everything up—all entries ending in 1 go into one sheet, those ending in 2 go into another, and so on, all the way up to 10. If you have any questions at all, just drop them in the comments below or shoot an email over to jaderider11@gmail.com. I really need some help here, and I need it fast.

Well, it really depends on whether that project code is stored as an actual number or just a text string—if it's a number, you could pull that last digit using =MOD(A1,10), though if it's text, =RIGHT(A1,1) might be the way to go.

The rest of the solution—well, that’s a bit more complicated—depends entirely on how your data is structured (how many columns we're talking about, etc.) and what you actually mean by "saving them into different tables"—do you want them moved to different spots on the same sheet, or are we talking about moving them to entirely separate tabs within the workbook?

I suppose it's relatively simple to set up a "semi-automatic" workaround: you just add a helper column to extract that final digit and then use that as your criteria for an AutoFilter. If you're looking for a fully automated solution, though, you'd probably need to write some actual code or a macro.

Kyle Johnson2 said:Goodness, you certainly are fired up! It feels as though if you were any more intense, you might actually combust right here on the forum. If I may be so bold as to offer a gentle critique, it seems to me that perhaps you didn't quite pull out all the stops on this one; there was a certain lack of meticulous effort in your approach that I simply couldn't help but notice. Personally, I found the entire process to be incredibly smooth, and I managed to get everything running perfectly using the exact formulas provided by Benjamin Wilson7 and Nicholas King. In fact, I must say, I found that method to be significantly more straightforward and far less cumbersome than wrestling with VBA code!
You actually provided an entirely blank file that you built using the template I sent over! It’s quite a curious thing, really, because you haven't included a single formula to back up your rather bold claim that this simply cannot be achieved through formulas.

Take a look at what Gregory Rogers20 is up to!
I truly believe there is nothing more rewarding than lending a helping hand when someone hits a roadblock, but one must also learn to exercise a bit of independent critical thinking. In my honest opinion, it felt as though you hadn't quite put in the necessary effort to explore the solution on your own first.
Please understand that this forum isn't a place to drop off your homework or demand that someone hands you a finished product on a silver platter! Our community exists to provide a helping hand when you hit a metaphorical brick wall or find yourself stuck on a tricky step. If your goal is simply to obtain a completed project without doing the legwork, then you aren't looking for a forum; you should instead seek out a professional freelancer, explain exactly what you need, and pay them for a turnkey solution. We are here to learn together, not to do the work for one another!

To truly demonstrate my point, I am providing you with this comprehensive tutorial, complete with every single illustrative step and all the necessary macro commands, just to prove that achieving something of this caliber requires genuine effort and dedicated labor! You have been handed every possible guideline and link available, yet it seems you haven't quite put in the work yourself. At this stage, the ball is entirely in your court; it is up to you to take these instructions, copy them accurately, and apply them directly to your own file.

- Is there anyone else out there who finds themselves constantly wrestling with massive datasets, trying to isolate just the most extreme values? I was working on a project the other day—much like one of those intense quarterly audits you might see at a firm like Deloitte—where I found myself staring at a spreadsheet that felt more like an endless labyrinth than a useful tool! I desperately needed a way to automatically grab everything sitting between my minimum and maximum values without manually clicking through thousands of rows. It’s one of those tasks that feels simple in theory but becomes a total headache when you're actually in the thick of it. I would love to hear how you all handle this! Does anyone have a preferred method for automating a sort and copy routine that targets that specific range between a MIN and MAX value? Whether you're using some clever formulas or a bit of automation, I am all ears!

Greetings to everyone! I hope you are all having a truly wonderful day.

I truly appreciate the suggestion, and I will certainly give that a try!

Greetings! I have an Excel question:

I am working with two distinct data sets, which I've entered into two separate columns.

The second group actually encompasses everything found in the first, plus some additional entries. Essentially, they aren't identical, but one is a superset of the other.

Is there a way to "align" these two columns so that matching values sit on the exact same row? Ideally, where the second column has extra data that doesn't exist in the first, the first column would simply show a blank cell...

Alternatively, would it be possible at least to align the matching pairs in the same rows and let the outliers drift to the bottom?

The data consists of numbers, so I could sort them by value if that happens to assist the process.

Many thanks!

Well, @Kyle Johnson2/">@@Kyle Johnson2, I truly gave this my absolute all, so please don't say I didn't put in the effort!
Naturally, as is often the case with these technical endeavors, I have run headlong into a few more hurdles.

1) Regarding the area highlighted in red in the image—only Group A is functioning quite right; however, for groups B, C, and D, it keeps spitting out "NN" under the "HDCP" column. It is clear something needs adjusting, though I am at a complete loss as to what specifically is causing the glitch.

2) Looking at the section marked in orange—it simply isn't working correctly when multiple players share the exact same HDCP in the database. Currently, the group list only displays one of them. What I really need is for the system to show every single player; for instance, if there are three different people in the database with an identical HDCP of (8,5), then all three should appear in that group, each with their own unique name, even if they share that same HDCP value. 🙂

3) As I mentioned previously, the database shouldn't be "fixed" or static because we are talking about athlete registration—think of it like someone signing up online via a website. Because people register whenever they want, the entries become a bit of a jumble; they aren't sorted by any specific number or name, but rather just added chronologically as they come in. That is why I emphasized that I want the formula to scan the entire database instead of treating it as a series of segmented groups...
In other words, why is the formula only searching positions 1-13 for Group A, or 14-26 for Group B, when the formula really ought to be scouring the entire database, spanning from positions 1 through 52.

4) Furthermore, the group ranges (the HDCP values, where the MIN and MAX are listed) are also fixed and unchanging. This creates a real headache; for example, if I have a Group A ranging from 1.5 to 12.4, but nobody in the database actually holds a 1.5 or a 12.4 HDCP, or if Group B tries to look for an HDCP that actually falls within Group A's range, the formula just wipes everything out and leaves everyone with empty fields. It’s quite illogical! The computer has no way of knowing which athlete will sign up next, what their specific HDCP might be, or which group they will ultimately land in.

Please, please don't be annoyed with me, but I have truly built this as far as my current abilities allow.
I am sharing my work here, and I sincerely hope that someone might be able to help resolve at least some of these issues.
Here is the file for you to look over.

I'm not getting mad. If I didn't want to help you, I wouldn't have bothered making a tutorial. You just made two mistakes because you were copying stuff without actually thinking about it.
First mistake is in column D. You manually typed out those eHDCP numbers instead of just using the formula "=B2" and dragging it down 53 rows.

Second mistake is in column H. You used the exact same VLOOKUP function for every single group. You should've noticed that the VLOOKUP function relies on a specific range to search through. That range isn't the same for all the groups.

Every group has its own range (I added this to the tutorial now so it makes sense)
- first => $C$2:$D$14
- second => $C$15:$D$27
- third => $C$28:$D$40
- fourth => $C$41:$D$53

Here’s the original file from the tutorial.

- Copying, sorting, and grouping with MIN and MAX

Also, grab this VLOOKUP PDF tutorial (password: www-ic-ims-us) and study how the function works—it's got examples too.

I can't help you any further. If this doesn't cut it, find someone to program the whole thing for you in Access.
