Look, I don't really care why copy-pasting into a new file is such a headache for you
but if it’s actually making your life miserable, check out these links

Nah, that’s not it, I already tried that. Turns out, I figured it out—it's actually my PDF add-in causing all this drama. Like, if I strip the PDF maker out of Word, everything runs perfectly fine, but the second I put it back in? Boom, there’s that error again. Just total chaos.

Here’s the stuff I’ve already messed with:
- nuking Word and reinstalling the whole thing
- installing and then uninstalling two different versions of Acrobat

But even after all that, every single time I try to launch Word, that stupid message just pops up right in my face. 🙂

Greetings.

I find myself wrestling with a rather tedious formatting issue in Microsoft Office. How does one go about justifying the right margin without triggering that unsightly stretching effect? To be more specific, I’ll have a line containing perhaps only three words, and the moment I attempt to justify the alignment, those few words are forcibly yanked apart to span the entire width of the page, leaving gaping voids between them. It looks quite amateurish.
If anyone is feeling particularly charitable and wouldn't mind taking a look at my document, I could certainly send it over via email.

Much appreciated!

darkwalker2 said:How do you right-align text without having those weird gaps between words in a single line?

It’s kinda weird that this is happening with the right alignment. Usually, you only see stuff like this when you grab some text off a website, dump it into Word, and then try to align it. It’s all about balance..

(if it’s a secret) Just wipe everything else from the doc except the specific part giving you grief, then upload it somewhere like Dropbox or Google Drive: Here.

Hannah Taylor14 said:2. the issue - double numbering
So, say you want the Header to show page X of Y for the whole document,
but then have the Footer show the page number within just that specific section/total pages in that section.

Here's a tutorial for ya

- how to handle dual page numbering in Word sections vs. the whole document

The tutorial does it backwards.
It puts the per-section count in the Header and the full document count in the Footer.

Kyle Johnson2 said:It strikes me as a bit odd that you're seeing this specifically with right alignment. Usually, those kinds of glitches crop up when you grab a chunk of text from some website, paste it into Word, and then try to apply JUSTIFIED alignment.

(assuming you don't mind sharing) Just strip everything else out of the document except for the specific section causing the headache, then upload it somewhere for us to grab—maybe here.

Thanks so much! I actually meant I was trying to justify the text, so yeah, I suppose I wasn't being entirely clear. But... it’s still a mess because it leaves this massive gap between my paragraphs. I need my line spacing set to 1.5, which it is, but the moment I try to start a new paragraph by hitting Enter, the gap balloons to something way larger than 1.5. I just can't seem to get it right.
I tried using Shift + enter to handle the breaks, but then the alignment went sideways on me.
At this point, my nerves are absolutely shot, so I've reverted to the old way—just using the Enter key, dealing with those awkward gaps, but at least the alignment looks decent.
I know it isn't perfect, and I'll likely have to redo the whole thing, but it feels like the computer is simply refusing to cooperate with me. Or maybe it's just me. It's probably the latter. 🙂

How can I scale numbers by a specific percentage?
I really need a faster way to do this—manually typing everything row by row is killing my soul...

Here’s the deal:

image

That yellow column shows the percentage I want to apply to all the other numbers in the row.
My goal is to adjust each column by adding or subtracting that percentage. The tricky part is that some percentages are positive increases while others are negative decreases.

I’m dealing with a massive amount of data here, so if I try to do this by hand, I’m basically throwing my entire weekend away.

Honestly, idk why you didn't just upload an example file since you already posted a screenshot anyway.

btw: Just use this formula
Code:
=SUM(A2:D2)+(SUM(A2:D2)*E2/100)

Depending on if your percentage is positive or negative, this will either bump up or drop down the sum of those first four columns.
Just drag it down to the bottom. Here's the attachment

My line spacing is set to 1.5, which it is, but as soon as I try to start a new paragraph by hitting ENTER, the gap jumps way past 1.5.

Dropped a link in my last post for fixing that justification issue. Here’s the link for tweaking the spacing when you hit ENTER.

Don't use Shift + enter to jump to a new paragraph—that’s just a line break, so it stays part of the same paragraph.
Turn on your paragraph marks (the little upside-down P) so you can actually see where your paragraphs end.
Hit Ctrl+5 for 1.5 spacing.
Check which version of Word you're running and set the style to "No spacing" if you're stuck using Word 2007.

@darkwalker2 - honestly, your best bet is to just upload it like our friend suggested so someone can actually take a look at it..

otherwise, I think you could try hitting CTRL+A (to select everything), set the line spacing to 1.5, and then everything should stay at 1.5 regardless of where you're working. Just a heads up though—it’ll probably mess up all your headings and stuff, so you'll likely have to go back in and tidy the text up a bit.

Yo, does Excel actually have an opacity setting? (specifically for images)
And can you even write text on top of pictures?
If so, how do I pull that off? 🙂
Because every time I try to type something, it just ends up hiding behind the image instead of sitting on top of it.

if so, how? because every time I try, the text just sits under the picture instead of on top of it.

You're being vague as hell, and which Excel are we even talking about? Just drop a sample file on the forum. What kind of images are we dealing with, where do you want them, and what's the actual goal here?

What kind of text are we talking about going over the image (maybe some WordArt text)? Is this text coming from a formula or just plain old text in a cell? Does it have to be in a cell, or could it be a transparent TextBox sitting on top of the image? How many images are in the Worksheet? etc., etc... Too many questions, and you only gave me two sentences.

btw: check these out

- How can I put an image behind excel cell
- Add a background image in Excel 2007
- How to Make Text Over Images With Microsoft Excel

Maybe you could just stick the image in a cell comment? (Ever thought of that?)

- Inserting images into Excel cell comments

[EDIT]: Here's a tutorial if this is what you're actually aiming for:

I'm having some issues with Microsoft Office 2003. 🙂
Actually, it's more like a bunch of them:

1) For some reason, it decided to update itself to the 2007 version. Now I can't get anything done because I don't have a product key. 😢

2) My plan was to just wipe the whole Microsoft Office suite and reinstall the 2003 version from my CD. I've tried this twice before without luck, but lately, it's just broken. When I go into the Control Panel—> remove... —> uninstall

...absolutely nothing happens!!! To make matters worse, next to the program (Microsoft Office 2003.), it says it was INSTALLED as of today.

Any ideas? Help me out here.

I haven't had the full Microsoft Office suite on my computer for quite some time now—not Word, not PowerPoint, not even Excel... and I don't have a disc lying around to run an installation from. Is there really no way to just download the whole thing from somewhere online? Because, honestly, I could really use it right now 🙂

Have you thought about just installing the free version, LibreOffice instead of Microsoft Office? 👍

Is there any way to import a mail folder from Outlook Express 6 directly into Microsoft Office Outlook?
The setup I'm looking at is Microsoft Office Outlook running on Windows 7, but the actual "mail" folder from Outlook Express 6 is sitting on an old Windows XP machine.

Thanks.

You've got two ways to handle this:

Hey there,

I had a quick question for the group...
So, if I have a column where I've just entered a bunch of 1s and 0s
how would I go about using a count function to make sure the second column only tallies up the cells that actually contain a 1?
Actually, I guess it doesn't necessarily have to be a count function specifically, as long as the logic works and gets me the right number.🙂

Here is a little example of what I mean...

Thanks,

Just pop this formula into cell B1 and drag it down
Code:
=COUNTIF(A$1:A1;A1)
