The whole situation felt bizarre—living in a dorm in Washington, D.C., during the turn of the millennium, looking at a future lawyer or executive... [dopiši: _______], yet she was absolutely convinced you aren't allowed to wash your hair or shower while on your period.😲

This matches my experience as well. I first encountered those ideas from a few girls back in college. 😁

I assume these old superstitions stem from the idea that a woman's body is more sensitive during menstruation and prone to catching a cold. Since women used to bathe only once a week as a custom, they likely avoided doing so during their period to prevent getting sick.

I might just douse her with water next time. I want to watch her life flash before her eyes. 😁

My period usually lasts about 5 to 7 days. I tend to skip washing my hair on day 1 or 2 because the cramps and heavy flow are usually too much to deal with, but I’ll wash it around day 3 or 4. Weirdly enough, once I wash my hair, the bleeding seems to stop, only to start back up again after a bit. Usually, everything clears up just one day after I finally wash my hair.

Well, let’s be honest... since I have spent my entire adult life dividing my existence into "before" and "after" birth control, we might as well apply that same logic here.
Before the pill, the first two days of my cycle were entirely consumed by screaming and vomiting, leaving me far too incapacitated to even think about crawling out of bed, much less taking a shower. In fact, maintaining an upright posture was an absolute impossibility; I had to hobble toward the bathroom like some sort of hunchback. 😁
By the third day, I could manage to sit up somewhat, but I learned through trial and error that if I didn't drink two cans of Coca-Cola about twenty minutes before stepping into the shower, things turned ugly. The bleeding would intensify as if the initial amount hadn't been heavy enough, and my pain medication became utterly useless against the cramps.
I wouldn't even dream of washing my hair until the fifth day—that was the first time I actually ventured outside the house—and even then, the process required a strict regimen of two pills and plenty of lying down.

Since starting the pill, the issues have largely vanished, though I still deal with sharper cramps if I don't take a pill twenty to thirty minutes before showering or washing my hair. Now that I can actually walk without assistance, I just wash up whenever I happen to be heading to the restroom. And just to prove a point to my own body, I actually managed to wash my hair on the second day this month. 😁

So, there is definitely a connection there, but as for the idea that I was actually going to die... I wasn't particularly afraid of that. 😂

...while I was recovering in the hospital, I found myself listening to the most absurd nonsense, and coming from women who considered themselves so highly educated. They actually had the nerve to label me as mentally unstable simply because I insisted on taking a shower once I had finally caught my breath after giving birth. It got so ridiculous that they even summoned the head nurse to try and lecture me into submission 😂
...these are certainly grim tales, yet they didn't emerge from thin air. Long, long ago, back when people bathed in basins or wooden tubs, they wouldn't dream of letting a woman who was still bleeding ruin the entire supply of water. At best, she might have been allowed to soak at the very end, but given how sensitive a woman is following childbirth—especially during such heavy flow—she would have likely contracted some nasty infection from the previous users, whether it was a grandmother, a grandfather, or anyone else. It just wouldn't have ended well 🤷

So I was doing a little digging online and honestly, it blew my mind how this isn't just some old wives' tale we grew up hearing here in the States—it’s actually a thing all over the world. 😬
I stumbled upon this snippet from an article I can't quite track down fully, but it says:
The majority of Indonesian (60 percent) and Philippine (68 percent) respondents believed that it was inadvisable to wash their hair during menstruation.

😲
It's gotta be rooted in something from the past. Maybe our immune systems just take a bit of a hit while we're on our periods, so there's a higher risk of catching something if you're damp and shivering because you don't have a hairdryer or central heating handy.

As for hair dye and stuff... look, ladies, we are basically walking hormone factories, and that hormonal rollercoaster definitely messes with our hair. You can find own more details right here about how hormones impact your skin and hair. Gotta know what's going on inside our own bodies, right? 😁

Betty Gomez10 said:So, I was chatting with a friend this morning while we were planning our night out, and she mentioned she’s on her period. Right in the middle of our conversation, she starts looking at her hair and complaining about how greasy and lifeless it feels, yet she insists she can't wash it. 😲 I was completely baffled—I mean, why on earth wouldn't she? She told me that you aren't supposed to wash your hair, let alone take a full shower, during your cycle, because that's what her grandmother always insisted on, claiming you shouldn't do any of that while you're on those days. 😕
?

I've heard people claim things like that before, but if you ask me, it sounds like total nonsense; I mean, when I'm on my period, not even a massive thunderstorm would stop me from hopping in the shower or washing my hair. Besides, isn't that exactly the time when my hair gets extra oily due to all those hormonal shifts? 😲 Honestly, the idea that I shouldn't clean myself up just because of my cycle sounds ridiculous—as if I should just sit there feeling gross while trying to get through my daily chores, which is just plain unpleasant.

Betty Morales22 said:Back when I was a kid, my step-aunt washed my hair while I was on my period, and she dropped dead just minutes later. People love to call that a coincidence, but years later, another aunt—not even related—did the exact same thing during someone else's period, and she died too. I've heard the old wives' tales about how you shouldn't wash your hair then, but I always wash mine on day one, and I'm fine. Honestly, I think it just depends on the person's body.

Alex Ruiz7 said:My mom told me the same thing. I try my best to avoid showering for the first two days, but by day three, I’m washing my hair like usual and nothing happens. Then again, I have a friend who actually ended up in the ER because she had a stroke right after doing that...🤷

I actually know someone who got taken out by a train at a station in Chicago because she washed her hair the night before.
And man, was she possessed back then.
Never really recovered either. Now she just wanders around local dive bars at night, stalking young couples, snatching kids from their moms... she’s missing an eye, always draped in black, with these nasty, crooked black nails. :jeza:

God, stories like this honestly terrify me. Just a few days ago, a friend of mine had her baby, and my mom—get this—immediately bought the newborn a red coral bracelet to ward off the "evil eye" or whatever superstition they're pushing now. And then, because I had just walked in from the dark outside, I wasn't even allowed to go near the baby right away?! I mean, look, it’s not like I was on my period or anything, so what was the logic there? Seriously, wtf? It makes me wonder what century we actually live in.

Honestly, what a load of nonsense... I wash my hair and dye it whenever—period. Doesn't matter if I'm on my period or not. I might wait a couple of days to shower if things are running a bit heavy, just because... well, you know, I don't want to be sitting there for hours soaking in red water trying to dry off. But if I'm not dealing with massive cramps, I can go out and jump around just fine. And regarding the hair dye? Honestly, I’ve dyed my hair while on my period plenty of times and the color always looks amazing. Though, I did hear some weird rumor that you shouldn't use tanning beds during your period because you won't catch a tan? Like, since when does having a period cause some mysterious bodywide shield that nobody can penetrate?? 😂😂😂
I don't buy any of it. This whole tanning bed thing is probably just something someone made up so women with less-than-perfect bodies will stay away from the salons, leaving more room for everyone else...
Anyway, I'm actually heading to wash my hair right now while I'm on my period, so I'll let you guys know if my hair falls out or not... 🤣😂

How exactly are you supposed to wipe off? 😂
It isn't like there's a constant stream of blood without any breaks where you can't wipe yourself without ruining your towel.
And why wait two days to shower? 😕A shower isn't going to hurt you. It's not like you have to go wading around in a bathtub.

Ugh, tell me about it! This month has been such a nightmare, I barely have time to wipe up... usually it slows down a bit after my shower, but this month it’s just non-stop madness, like it's doing it on purpose!
I always make sure to use water or wipes when I change my pad. Honestly, I don't know how I'd deal with everything otherwise!

It’s not like you're bleeding non-stop without a single break where you can't even wipe without absolutely ruining your towel.
Are you seriously waiting two whole days just to shower? 😕A quick rinse isn't going to hurt you. You don't need to go for a full-on soak in the tub.

Look, it's not like I skip showers entirely, but let's just say I don't bother on day one because the flow is honestly relentless... it just doesn't stop. My period usually lasts about three days, so there's definitely going to be some leakage over that time. And obviously, I stay totally clean with wet wipes because I'm a bit of a germaphobe—but if there's one thing I truly loathe, it's that moment when you try to shower and grab a towel only to realize you've completely trashed it. So yeah, I wait a day or two until I feel like I can actually wash up like a normal human being. It's the only time during the month when I'm not showering every single day, and man, the discomfort is just awful. I hate having to be around people because I constantly feel like I smell bad—even though I know I shouldn't—but I'm just so used to always feeling fresh, clean, and smelling like vanilla or fruity body wash.😍
