I was exactly the same way when I first started college and navigating my sex life—I used to overanalyze every tiny little sign and spiral into total panic. I’ve been through about ten pregnancy tests myself, so I know exactly what kind of mental state you're in right now.
Eventually, you get some experience under your belt. You learn how your body works, you understand your sexuality, you relax, and before you know it, you’ll be doing exactly what I’m doing now: helping some other new soul through their own panic.
A test is 99% reliable. Personally, I’d say even 100%, because neither I nor any of my girlfriends have ever had one fail us—whether they were saying "no" to a pregnancy or confirming one. Plus, if you take it two days before your period is due, it's pretty much foolproof. If you wait until you're actually two or three days late? It's incredibly accurate.
By the way, if your periods are regular, tracking your fertile and non-fertile windows is a huge advantage. You really need to learn your cycle and listen to your body. During my fertile window, we always use condoms. Around those peak days, we're extra careful. But toward the end of the cycle, once I know ovulation has passed (usually signaled by cramps, bloating, and PMS), we don't bother with protection at all. We just relax during those last two or three days before my period arrives.😉 🙂
And honestly, anxiety plays a massive role here. If you panic, you stress out, and stress can actually delay your period. If yours is running late, I recommend skipping sex for a day or two. Even the act itself can sometimes cause tension that delays things—you've got to let everything relax down there. Just breathe and relax; it will come.😉 ...it definitely will.😉

Thank you so much. I truly hope my period shows up soon because I really don't want to go through this experience again—not mentally and certainly not physically. Even though I have an amazing boyfriend who is standing by me and supporting me through everything, I wouldn't want something like this to mess with our otherwise perfect relationship.

I totally get where you're coming from since I'm a college student too. And let's face it—sex happens, even when you're trying to be careful... My boyfriend finished inside me right during my ovulation window (it was a weekend, we had some drinks 🙏 )
Yeah, I was waiting for my period like my life depended on it. It didn't show up exactly on time, and I was buying tests like there was a sale at CVS, but they all came back negative. Once I finally relaxed, my period showed up! High fertility, perfect ovulation, and then boom—my period arrives!! 😍 Pure luck over logic there.
Now, he only finishes inside me during the very end of my cycle... just those last few days when it's almost over. We don't use condoms then.. 🙂

Honestly, he has never actually finished inside me. I am terrified of getting pregnant, so we are extremely careful.

🙂

You should probably be careful—it’s not exactly safe. You have to keep in mind that sperm can live inside you for about three days, while an egg waits for about two days to be fertilized...
And what happens if you happen to ovulate a little earlier than expected by mistake?
If you have a standard 28-day cycle, the first five days after your period starts are usually infertile, but if ovulation shifts forward by just a few days, you might end up pregnant unexpectedly...
I suppose blood does affect sperm motility, so having sex during your period is more or less relatively safe, but because of the risk of early ovulation, I wouldn't recommend going for it during those last two days..
I guess the best time would be day one (though I wouldn't suggest days 2 or 3, since if your flow is heavy it could get pretty messy... even though those two days are actually the most secure from that perspective)

Watch out—this isn't foolproof. You have to remember that sperm can live inside you for up to three days, while an egg waits about two days to be fertilized.
So, what happens if you accidentally ovulate earlier than expected?
If you have a standard 28-day cycle, those first five days after your period are usually safe. But if ovulation shifts forward by just a few days, you're in trouble.
Technically, blood kills off sperm mobility, so having sex during your period is mostly safe, but don't risk it during those last two days because of early ovulation.
Honestly, the safest bet is one day in, though I wouldn't recommend days two or three—if your flow is heavy, it’ll be a total mess. Even so, those two days are actually your most reliable window.

I'm not really into those methods myself. My boyfriend and I just use condoms for now, and I'm crossing my fingers that everything goes fine—that I get my period and can finally switch over to the pill. Thanks again for the support; I'm really hoping my period shows up soon.🙂 🙂

Physically, it usually takes about a month to recover. You likely won't see your period return for roughly thirty days. However, the mental recovery is a completely different story. It’s also possible for your cycles to be a bit irregular for the first six months—sometimes they might be heavier than usual, or you might skip them entirely. I tend to think of it as a "Vacuum-abortus" effect. Essentially, the procedure clears out the uterine lining, and it simply takes time for that tissue to regenerate and for your cycle to find its rhythm again. Plus, your hormone levels need time to stabilize.

Mental recovery is a whole different ballgame, though. For the first six months, things might be a bit unpredictable—you could deal with heavy flows or even skip them entirely. I always think of it like a Planned Parenthood procedure; it basically clears out all that uterine lining, and it takes some time for everything to rebuild itself and for your cycle to get back to its normal rhythm. Plus, your hormone levels need time to level out, too.

Thanks, I appreciate it.
Do private clinics in Chicago offer this service, or is it strictly hospital-based?

I once thought I was pregnant myself. My period was a week late—which is unusual for me—so I bought a test. It turned out to be a total false alarm, and my period arrived just two hours after the negative result showed up.
Just take it easy and try not to let the stress get to you. Getting worked up really does nothing but make things worse. 😉

It’s been a solid two hours since I took my test and nothing has happened yet, but oh well... hopefully it shows up soon.

A friend of mine went through the procedure at a clinic near Chicago without any big drama. It was just a quick visit during regular business hours, she saw the doctor, and they set everything up. No complications, no fuss, and certainly no lectures—which is exactly what you don't need right now. You just fill out some paperwork and sign those standard liability waivers, the usual stuff.
The real issue is that she’s been trying to conceive with her current husband for four years now, and he’s been giving her a hard time about it, which is one thing. But this whole paranoia she’s developed over what she did? That’s a whole different problem.

Private clinics won't give you anything officially on the record, but on paper, it's all official, even if the reality on the ground feels a bit different.

It’s done through the hospital via the standard process. You show up first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, fill out the paperwork, and they give you an IV injection that leaves you feeling so lightheaded you can barely stand on your own. They handle the cleaning in about two or three minutes, then you just hang out in the recovery room for another couple of hours—or however long you feel like staying—before heading home. Just make sure to bring a nightgown and some slippers. $200.

Ladies, honestly, I am absolutely floored by some of the nonsense I’ve been reading here. It’s genuinely shocking! Some of you seriously need to go back and crack open a middle school biology textbook!
Look, it's simple: condoms protect your brain, and if you're in a committed relationship, get on the pill. And what is this talk about "ejaculation outside the body" being safe? Please. There is plenty of sperm in pre-ejaculate alone to fertilize an egg. Once ovulation happens, that egg is viable for about 24 hours. Seriously, basic science, people!🙄 You need to be seeing a gynecologist regularly—treat them like a trusted close friend and ask them every single question you have!
Honey, you need to see a gynecologist right away (honestly, you should have started doing this the moment you became sexually active) who can tell you immediately whether or not you're pregnant. If you are, given how far along you might be, they will walk you through which Planned Parenthood services or medical options are available to you. They'll explain everything (make sure you ask!), and they will refer you to the hospital. Be prepared to set aside roughly $1000 for the costs. In a situation like this, you don't need a formal appointment at the clinic; just walk in, tell the nurse what's going on, and they will see you immediately.
If it turns out you aren't pregnant, they'll help you find the best birth control method for your specific needs.
Love,

what happened at Mary's place?

Yeah, in her backyard shed.🙄 I mean...

A general hospital, the OB-GYN intake clinic. At least you get a receipt to justify the costs 😛.

I honestly can't wrap my head around those prices—are we talking $2,000 or $3,000? $0.00 If you go to a private specialist, sure, maybe. But why not just use your insurance and a referral from your doctor? I assume they won't even put it in your permanent medical record.

I honestly don't get what these prices are supposed to be—$2 said:

There's actually a point to that—the info in the medical file.
Abortion—no matter how many times women have had one (it almost feels like a form of birth control at this point)—is still treated like some kind of taboo.

I remember when one gynecologist (during our very first chat) just blurted out and asked me how many abortions I'd had so far. Not even a polite, "Have you ever had an abortion?" It was more like: "Well, just tell me. It'll show up in your exam results anyway."

Private clinics charge more because they supposedly offer better professionalism and guaranteed discretion... but honestly, the main thing is just having that privacy. In public hospitals, things can get messy. It feels like the whole town finds out who went in for an abortion, and then all that neighborhood gossip starts... which is exactly what causes the psychological trauma later on. 🙂
I think any woman knows exactly what an abortion entails, just like she knows what carrying a baby means. It really just depends on the situation...
As a college student, getting pregnant would be a huge deal, but since I’m a junior and my credits are solid... I’d choose to have the baby...
I don't quite get the women who claim it was an "accident" when they were using protection...🧐
In my case, my boyfriend finished inside me right on my ovulation day... yet I'm not pregnant. And it always happens on the fifth day of my period... so I'm safe... 😎 (It's lucky... but now I find myself wondering... what if I'm actually infertile??? 😕 )
Ah... us women... 🙂

I guess there was no real need for all that panic. Maybe if you don't do stuff like that next time, you won't have to worry about it. I mean, having sex without a condom with people you don't know in this day and age... I don't know, are people really okay with that?😠 🤣 🤣 🤣

Now it’s time to head down to the local CVS to pick up some birth control.
