Best concert of the year?

There’s been plenty going on in Chicago this season, but honestly—the more I indulge in dirtbombs and the more I read these glowing reviews from various US-based forum members about their live shows—the more I’m prepared to declare this the concert of the year. At least where rock'n'roll is concerned...

They actually have an interesting FAQ section on their website where I was genuinely surprised by the answer to this specific question:

What are your influences?

Individually, the influences of the Dirtbombs are all over the map. Every one of us owns over 1,000 LPs, covering the entirety of recorded music. Strictly speaking, Mick (who handles the majority of the songwriting) lists the band's major influences as Wire, Pere Ubu, Mission Of Burma and the Swell Maps, with a big nod to Glam Rock.

It wasn't until I read this—and after hearing Mick Collins say in an interview that everyone can shove their "garage rock" label because their music is way closer to Television than any garage band—that I finally realized why they're so great. It's the same reason those punk bands Mick mentioned work for me... they're quirky, compelling, and different...

When does pre-sale actually start?

I heard they use dual drum kits and two bass guitars😁 They must be twice as good as everyone else, right?

Where can I pick up some glittery shirts like the ones Rocket From the Crypt wears? Not that they were being subtle—one guy just unbuttoned his shirt down to his gut, stood right in the front row, and started screaming "Dirtbombs! Hell yeah!"

I just hope nobody runs into any trouble at the border on this otherwise friendly trip.

Well, if you’re pitching it that enthusiastically, I suppose it must be worth something... perhaps I might stick around through the weekend to see it for myself... 🙂 (though please, try not to go overboard by hitting everything in one massive burst of energy... 😁 )

It would be wonderful if we could host an exceptional concert this Friday. Typically, our schedule follows a set pattern: good music on Tuesdays, followed by post-rock and high-energy sets on Fridays and Saturdays.😁

Dammit, I’m stuck in San Diego just a day before the show. If I actually stayed, I’d have to deal with the hassle of finding a place to crash for two nights, paying for the flight home, food, drinks, and burning enough energy at the venue to be useless for days. Plus, I’d have to listen to my parents nagging me about how I'll end up wasting my life instead of finishing my degree—all for a band that hasn't even impressed me with their albums yet.

But then again, part of me really wants to... 🙂

Hm, this is the second time I've listened to one of their albums where they kick things off with two or three generic rock clichés just to kill the momentum, before pivoting into something completely soft. 😕

And this completely misses the mark for me. All I hear is MC5 mixed with some kind of soul. It's pure rock and roll, damn it.

Take them, for instance—King's Lead Hat. Now, that's actually good.
