Rachel Sanchez11 said:And once again, we've turned this thread into whatever boldhound8 was rambling about regarding U vs M.
But I guess that happened because the mods feel like they're being attacked...
Hmm, does it count as "already said" if you were just stating your own opinion?

Yeah, I love thinking like that, and usually, I'll double down on that kind of logic...
😁

Especially when I've got nothing better to do...
☕

P.S. smartie, if everything really had been said, there wouldn't be a brand new thread all about her...
Let's make a bet:
If a similar thread about her pops up within a month, you resign and get a permanent ban...
If it doesn't happen, I'll never become a moderator (Lord knows what I'm even betting here) and I'll get a permanent ban...

Deal?

I don't get it. "Was something said"? Said what?

Anyway, every single thread ends up like this because that’s how they start. I don't feel attacked at all—is there a problem with us just having a conversation? 😉 I was just joking around, don't get all sensitive on me... 🙂

Edit: hey, do you even own anything? 😁 You're out here betting on stuff like that, so I'm actually kind of worried about your bank account. 😁>

It’s pretty straightforward.
Drop a link to an actual FBI complaint that was resolved in favor of a user, without any private messaging involved.

Maybe I’m just being cynical, but whatever... like any good atheist, I don't believe a word until I see the proof right in front of me.

As a matter of principle, I don't slide into the mods' DMs because that's not how you file a formal grievance. If there's already an FBI process in place, things should be transparent. Mods are just people like anyone else, so it’s common sense that they’d react better to a polite DM than to some aggressive post filed through the official channels. The admins should really be the ones driving this, but their role is shrouded in mystery and fog, just like on any other site... I highly doubt they spend their time debating warnings in the admin lounge; they probably have much more important stuff on their plates. 😂

Hm, since we're already joking around...
My bad on the typo, my "v" key isn't working (had to borrow one from someone else, but you can't do that forever, assuming people are smart enough to follow along without it...)
Clearly, I made a wrong assumption...

And here I was thinking you were self-assured...
Now you're trying to turn this into a debate about material stuff?
Does being a moderator and having a certain handle really matter so much to you that you'd throw money at it?
I can't believe this...
😂

It would be quite nice if you actually won that bet.

I honestly have no idea who even appointed her to the moderation team; personally, I wouldn't trust her to run a lemonade stand.😁

Then again, the moderator is currently on vacation, so maybe they should just let things stay as they are? 🤷😁

I mean, seriously? Is this really how we're gonna talk to each other? 🤷

Hey guys and girls...

Look, I’m not trying to be the admins' defense attorney here—especially since I don't even know half of them personally—but you people have massive, totally unrealistic expectations. Let’s get one thing straight right out of the gate: nobody here is getting paid. Everyone does this for the hell of it, including the admins. I’ll take this list and, without naming names because I don't want to start a war, give you the actual reality of the situation:
There are 20 people on this list.
2 of them are total strangers to me.
2 handle the server backend and have zero connection to the community side; they basically just act as moderators.
6 of them are just clones from some failed project long ago.
And yeah, blah blah, I won't go on forever, but looking at this entire list, I only see 2, maybe 3 people who actually show up. So that’s the administration problem right there. How can a forum with over 100,000 users, 300k threads, and 13M posts only have 3 active admins? It’s like they’re getting a paycheck or something, for god's sake.😁

What I’m trying to say is that all of you screaming about how admins should be these perfect little judges—try stepping into their shoes for a second. Let's say you’re the #1 admin and your main interest is Soccer. What the hell would you know about banning someone in Politics? Or Economics? How much do you actually follow Fashion or Cars?
You say, "Oh, it's easy to check." Yeah, right. Like hell it is. To really get to the bottom of a mess, you have to sink an insane amount of time into it, there's a mountain of complaints, and everyone is breathing down your neck waiting for an answer...
Do you get what I'm saying?🤷

Seriously, what kind of hierarchy is this where you have over 100 moderators and 20 bosses, yet maybe 3 are actually doing anything? It’s freaking impossible to run like that.🙂
It’s like the CEO of ExxonMobil worrying about why a single employee at a tiny gas station in rural Ohio is taking the company truck to go look at a vineyard.😁

Since having 20 active admins would be a total luxury, I think it’s a way better option for colleagues to just watch out for each other. For example, if I’m in the Soccer section, I’m definitely not going to jump to defend a colleague like unknown or unknown if I know they screwed up, just like I don't expect them to jump to my defense if I mess up. But damn, you guys hate that idea because you think we’re all best buddies just because we’re in the same group, the moderator group. You don't realize how massive and sprawling this forum is. I don't even know who the Economics moderator is; honestly, I don't even know where the Economics section is because I haven't spent four seconds there in four years...

Would you guys be open to a suggestion, like forming a "Moderator Council" to deal with mistakes? Basically, a council of 10 mods—one from Sports, one from IT, one from Society, one from... whatever, and maybe 2 admins. Then that council could discuss the complaints?
Now, some of you will call this garbage, and others will claim such a council would just protect the moderators anyway.😁
So what then? You gonna take it to the Supreme Court?🤷 Even then, it wouldn't be fair to anyone...

Man, I wouldn't abolish the FBI, I'd rather moderate like Adolf Hitler...
....
Ugh... I started writing all this detail and now I've lost interest. That's unknown's job, let him deal with it. I’m just gonna push my ideas through in Soccer and the Internet sections.🙂

* - Just so it doesn't look like I'm stealing someone else's thought, this idea has been on the moderators' radar for ages, but it just sat there. Nothing ever actually happened...

Look, I am being well-intentioned here, but it feels like you aren't...
you love using irony and playing everything down...
if that's how you want to act, then you have to accept that people are going to respond to you that way...
I read it again and all I see is that you understood what I meant with that "everything is fine" vibe, but you just trivialized the whole thing with two little emojis and a comment so it wouldn't be taken too seriously...

I did the exact same thing (well, I missed the emoji, but we're basically in the same boat; I'll put it at the end of this post) and now you're getting worked up...
Don't get mad, I wasn't trying to hurt your feelings...

Look, I get it—just because I drop my two cents doesn't mean the debate is over, and you don't need to spell that out for me. But honestly? I also have every right to just sit here and not give you some obvious-as-hell answer. Like, seriously, what’s even the point in responding? 🤷 Fine, if you're really gonna insist on making me say it, whatever. But just so we're clear—me stating my position doesn't mean this whole debate is over. I'm far from done.

Look, I'm telling you—forgive me—but from here on out, when I'm talking to you, I am done trying to decode what the author actually meant. I'm being dead serious. No more overanalyzing.

Hopefully things will turn around soon.

boldhound8, I honestly have no clue what the thought process was behind this post, or even where the disagreement lies...
But man, crushing someone's little dreams just because you can be incredibly petty...
Especially since he actually had a decent idea about making the forum easier to navigate.
It’s kind of a shame when a site builds up these illusions for people that it just can't actually fulfill...
And that whole sense of democracy, that feeling of playing fair—that used to actually mean something here. I remember days when that mattered a hell of a lot. Nowadays, people live under the delusion that it still exists. Maybe it's time we just come out and say it plainly: it doesn't.

And you actually hit on the real issue...
Look, you can't just walk all over a moderator who isn't getting paid, especially when you're turning a blind eye every time they mess up. You try to settle things with them in a small group, trying to convince them to stay in their role. Because, let's face it, someone has to clean up the massive pile of crap in politics and general nonsense. If someone is moderating 500 posts a day for free and dealing with some random guy jumping around—I think his name was 😁—or banning some random person nobody cares about, they're just doing it. They'll show up, cause absolute chaos, get someone in deep trouble, and then take a permanent ban. Then, in the end, they just make a clone account that nobody recognizes, and that's that. Life goes on, the clone ends up being one of three hundred billion others, and in the background, things just keep moving like they always do...
Then someone shows up with a bright idea...
And gets shut down immediately.
Just because he mentioned paying moderators—you know, like raising funds so a few guys could grab some burgers and fries without having to dig into their own pockets...
Do you see the kind of vision the guy had?
But hey, nothing new on this forum...
There have been hundreds of attempts like this, and they all end up in the exact same way...
Some topics are basically eternal taboos, and if you even touch them, exile is pretty much guaranteed...

So how do we actually fix the problem with this thread?
I actually suggested a moderator council once upon a time, back when there was a plan to organize the political sections...
And they just laughed me out of the room back then...
If the moderators are discussing it now, I swear I am laughing my head off...
The hypocrisy is unreal...
(Not that they actually read my old post before starting this discussion, though)

That’s definitely not how it sounded in your first post..
If you're responding when there's actually nothing left to say about the topic, that's clearly defined in the rulebook regarding warnings—which you really ought to know since you're supposed to be enforcing them...
It doesn't matter if you're in New York or wherever you are now... You aren't lagging behind Rebecca Rogers, but you are lagging behind in actually understanding her...

Look, I assume I’m lagging behind on your moderation duties—specifically this whole move over to the women's section, which I suppose wouldn't have even caught if I hadn't been scrolling through boldhound8's list of mods... so much for my claim that I actually keep up with what goes on here (not that I'm particularly proud of it)😁, and honestly, a women's corner isn't really my scene, but the way you moderate it feels like an insult to me as a woman, and frankly, as an intelligent person too

I might have complained more if I actually gave a damn about these subforums, or even this entire site—but I mostly just drift in occasionally to spot a few gems... sometimes it's funny, sometimes it's just tragic, but I guess life goes on anyway😁

Now I'm actually wondering what the deal is here. I already answered your question about why the admins aren't stepping in, just did it with a bit of sarcasm 😬 , but I was specifically addressing the point you raised that I wanted to double-check.

So, let's get this straight. Are you implying that when admins jump in to back up a moderator's call, they're just spamming the thread with useless replies? Or are you saying my sarcastic answer above was spam? Or are you trying to say you baited me into answering something obvious with a joke, and now I should get a warning for it? 😬 Or both of us?

I'm lost. 😵

I don't know about you, man, but I'm telling you, that guy's dream of being a "moderator" has been dead for a year already😁 And btw, the guy is way too old to have his "childhood" dreams crushed by anyone.😁
Anyway, you're right about the ideas. He's got plenty of smart ones (and sure, some stupid ones too, obviously😁), but hardly any of them ever get implemented. Why that is, I haven't a clue...

Look, we've known each other a long time, so don't try to twist my words.😉
Those "contributions" you're talking about are peanuts. Moderators are basically disposable. Even if all 100 or however many of us quit right now, the owner would find over 100 replacements within 24 hours. It's incredibly easy to find people to moderate, so don't act like you're indispensable.😉
It’s not even about wanting to get rid of someone, it’s about all the absolute nightmares and endless headaches 🙂 that dream just listed. Why the hell are you people always digging for it? You see a "conspiracy" in every single little thing, for God's sake.😁

If I could make one request, it would be this: it’s not actually a crisis when a dog bites a person; the real crisis is when a person decides to bite a dog.
🙂
It’s the same dynamic here on this platform; most of what we see is just a chorus of people complaining, whereas the ones who are actually satisfied aren't even bothering to chime in or browse this specific sub-forum.
If I were to step up right now and say that the admins are doing an incredible job and working incredibly hard, I’d be voicing something unpopular—something that nobody really wants to admit out loud.
And the truth is, those people really do put in the work behind the scenes to keep things running and keep us talking...
However, that entire side of the operation isn't public, and it certainly isn't open for everyone to inspect.
And even if it were, you'd just end up with a whole new group of dissatisfied critics anyway...
🙂

boldhound8, I honestly have no clue what the thought process was behind this post, or even where the disagreement lies...

There you go, a textbook example. And I mean a perfect one. It’s almost as if it couldn't be any more illustrative than this.

I've bolded the part that actually matters for you—take a second and really chew on that.

I’m guessing the admins haven't stepped in not because you laid everything out so perfectly, but just because neither the FBI nor anyone else actually bothered to look at this thread. Honestly, I don't think they give a damn if someone is filing a complaint on Reddit...
I’m also guessing you jumped in to defend your colleague over there, mostly because that seems to be some unwritten rule among you people...
And I’m pretty sure I was right, since there’s yet another active complaint sitting there with the exact same parameters as mine—except mine is probably the fifth one in a row, and like I said in my bet, I doubt it’s even the last...
I’m also implying you weren't entirely joking when you quoted my typo...
Maybe we totally get each other, but we’re both never going to admit it, because at the end of the day, we're both just bored and want to see how long this can drag on...

At the end of the day, I think this thread has at least ten different anchors you could latch onto if you actually wanted to be constructive, but only one if you're just looking to turn this whole thing into our own little personal grudge match...

Look, you’re a mod. By default, you should be the one taking responsibility for the health of the forum and this specific thread. So, make a choice!

Well, I'm glad you decided to bold that..
Because as you can see, I didn't actually jump to any conclusions or pass judgment here...
Maybe he really is just an old-timer clinging to childhood dreams...
But I was talking about the rest of his post...
And if you look at what he wrote, it’s pretty clear:

"So now, just when I'm finally mentally and physically ready to launch this idea that would totally revolutionize Reddit—I get hit with a slap in the face. And it comes in the form of the most random, incredibly basic response imaginable. It pissed me off so much that I basically killed him in my head, because he was clearly just the product of some rushed thoughts from a guy (me) who believed in ideas that were obviously wrong."

And man, that's just sad...
When you see how many people out there lack the drive to even try and make something happen, it's honestly ugly to crush the spirit of someone who actually has that spark...
If the will is there, even if the idea is flawed, if there's someone smart behind it, you can usually steer things in a positive direction in most cases...

You implied basically everything except the fact that the admins might be looking at this and choosing not to step in because they actually agree with the moderator. You didn't even consider that. And honestly, that was the whole point I was trying to make in my first reply.

And yeah, I'm with you on the quoting thing. 😁

I’m not looking at this as some kind of showdown. I argue with you all the time and it usually ends on good terms. But fine, if you want to cut to the chase, whatever. I'm with the unknown guy—it feels like a conspiracy everywhere you look. And as long as there's more than one person using this site, nobody's ever going to be 100% satisfied. The FBI has a purpose, sure, but most people on this board have completely different motives than you do. Someone is always going to feel slighted. It's simple: you can't please everyone. And frankly, some people don't even deserve it.
