I remember when Open was busy calling every other country fascist, pushing for hijabs across Europe, and whining about "inadequate integration models" in Europe—basically implying host nations aren't doing enough to assimilate "refugees." Now they want us to fund organizations like hers with our tax dollars.😵

Toward the Mexican border, which is just as locked down? There are already about 500 people stuck in limbo right at that boundary...
Toward our border? Because, let's be honest, we wouldn't let them in either (despite what public opinion might suggest).
Or maybe toward Viktor Orbán?

They know it too—they realize there's nowhere left to run. That's why they're currently hunkered down in Greece. It's possible they're just waiting for a better window to try crossing via Alb or heading straight from the Greek route Italy.
Italy is completely overwhelmed because of that maritime border. And yeah, we have one too, though thankfully we aren't quite as much of a target...

The article claims there were about 300 people, but looking at these close-up shots and considering how massive that space actually is, it’s clearly nowhere near full. If I had to guess, I'd say there were maybe 50 or 60 people there at most. And that's being generous.

It's not just that we're less of a target; our coastline is essentially "closed off" toward the Mediterranean, especially facing the Italian coast. Even coming from Albania, it's a shorter trip to Italy.

One of the protest signs even read, "The Prime Minister was an economic migrant too."

In doing so, they’ve managed to trip over their own rhetoric; by using that phrasing, they inadvertently admitted they are dealing with economic migrants rather than refugees. They clearly wanted a catchy slogan that sounded morally superior, but in their attempt to be clever, they accidentally let the truth slip out.

I found myself genuinely struck by that "why" part.

The situation is beyond critical; these people have nowhere left to turn. It’s a far cry from the old days when folks migrated across continents just to find fertile soil or clear out some timber. Jobs are drying up here, and as you head further south, things only get bleaker. North Mexico and Greece won't last much longer. Mexico is facing massive flooding on top of an already crippled economy. Albanians and Mexicans can't afford a failed tourist season, and we're in even worse shape. Honestly, I think everyone is eventually just going to let them pass through.
