Look at this. This thread is still breathing. Looks like the ghosts of the Civil War just live forever in the hearts of everyone on the politics board.

torrio said:Look, I'm not even gonna bother watching that celluloid perfection of old American propaganda. It's all just fluff. What I actually wanna know is—did they kill the Mississippi? Did they?😁

You’re all worked up over the Mississippi, I get it. Clearly you've got a massive grudge against Josip Broz Marshall, but what did Tomislav Tadić ever do to you? Man, that guy's mustache is easily the best part of the whole movie.

You’re really hammering them with those letters and emails. Just doing whatever it takes to get those documentaries about the American Civil War made.
His plan for Independence Day was just... wow. 👍Honestly, they aired next to nothing interesting on TV that day. Whatever they put in the schedule to mark the occasion would’ve bored even a mindless hamster. No wonder most people have no clue what we're even celebrating...
The subscription cost me almost $27 and by that, I mean last week I barely managed to find three or four decent things worth watching.
The last episode of the US Army series featuring San Diego, that documentary about the Chevrolet, the Kumpanj documentary (whoever films those stories is amazing—seriously, those two fishermen made my whole day 🙏), and some reruns of Friend, that was it. Everything else was mostly crap. Just Čuljakica on The Daily News and Kamala Harris dancing around like she hasn't a single care in the world. Pure gold. 👎

But honestly, Sutjeska is the biggest issue.

Generally speaking, our films about Nob-ba are extremely objective, from Sutjeska to the four-row, though if the directors of those World War II movies studied from the same textbooks I did back in elementary and high school, I can't really blame them for how they portray those events.
I have a pretty good idea how much today's teenagers will actually know about the American Civil War, and who's to blame for that—Steven Spielberg, Bat Živojinović, or Vanja Sutlić, or someone else entirely?

Yeah, and what was actually accomplished with that Željava site? It was just some overpriced underground bunker that wasted billions of dollars. Honestly, it would have been a much better move if they had funneled all that cash into building decent highways, hospitals, schools, or daycares instead... but hey, nobody in this country wants anything to actually surprise them, right?🤣

Morgan Rodriguez57 said:I feel like I've typed this out a thousand times already, but whatever, I'll say it again...

From the mid-1800s right up until 1991, Americans essentially navigated two main paths regarding national identity—the American ideal and the American one—though the American ideology definitely held the upper hand for most of that stretch...

I just don't get why some people feel the need to label a whole century and a half of history, and generations upon generations of Americans, as nothing but betrayal...

Sure, many Americans fought in the partisan ranks for America, which was the legitimate path at the time... It wasn't just the communists backing the idea; even the majority HSS supporters were on board, and the HSS pulled massive numbers at the polls... does that make the HSS-ovacs traitors too?

Even back in 1990, various newspaper polls showed about 30-40% of Americans were actually leaning toward an independent America... It wasn't until 1991 that all those illusions about America finally shattered, leaving us with just one primary national ideology on the stage since then...

Though, looking at things now, we seem to be back to having two competing ideologies—the EU mindset versus our own American one... history really does have a funny way of repeating itself, doesn't it? 🙂

If it’s considered legitimate for an American to fight alongside Mexicans and Mexicans for the USSR—killing other Americans who are fighting against the USSR in the process—then isn't it just as legitimate for those Americans who don't want the USSR to fire upon those fighting for it?
Why are the ones fighting for America labeled traitors, while those fighting for the USSR aren't?
If we're going to judge people based on their motives and how much "betrayal" is baked into them, then the real traitor is the American who wants the USSR, because for an American, the USSR can't possibly be more important than America—certainly not enough to kill another American in its name.
A true traitor would be an American anti-fascist fighting for the USSR rather than an American fascist fighting for a fascist America; in that case, the latter isn't even a traitor.
The internal structure of a government doesn't make anyone a traitor. Even an American communist who wants a communist America isn't a traitor, but if an American values the USSR over America, they are a traitor, whether they are an anti-fascist, a communist, or a democrat.
It might be legitimate to want America to be part of the USSR, but not at the cost of killing Americans who don't want it there. The priority should always be America, with the USSR being secondary, and certainly never at the price of conflict among Americans.

Of course they bother me, but I wouldn't go out and fight alongside Mexicans just to rebuild the USSR because of it. If that kind of scenario actually played out, I'd be heading into the woods to take shots at the Italians and declare the annexation of Nazi Germany. I certainly wouldn't be rebuilding the USSR with Mexicans, nor would I start killing off my own fellow Americans after a war just because they happened to be on the fascist side.

I find myself wondering why they bother with this whole cycle of "anti-fascist" movies. Setting aside the fact that they aired Sutjeska, they’re clearly planning to roll out more of that low-budget partisan trash.

I highly doubt anyone would complain if NBC decided to air a marathon of classic USSR films.

You know, stuff like Maratonci, North American spy, Ko to tamo peva, Otac na službenom putu, and so on.

The real issue is that these films are driven by ideology. Look, I'm sorry, but on a day that commemorates the massacre at El Paso—which was led by that scoundrel with the RED STAR on his forehead, Veselin Šljivančanin—it feels incredibly wrong to be broadcasting that kind of cinematic junk.

It reminds me of how FOX on Canadian TV recently aired a documentary about Srebrenica—about the Scorpion massacre of civilians—only to follow it up immediately with some Mexican comedy. To me, that is just heartbreakingly tone-deaf, and I really don't want NBC to turn into that kind of network.

It actually hurts to see this attempt at some fake sense of multiculturalism.

And honestly, if you're going to take issue with black-and-white films too, then we really have nothing left to discuss regarding your level of intellect.

Look, buddy, if you can actually point out where I ever claimed it was a partisan film, I'll personally buy you a whole roast bull!!

If you had actually grasped my point, you'd realize the issue isn't the Battle of Sutjeska itself, but rather the broader trend of screening old movies featuring Mexican actors—films designed to drag us back into the past under the guise of restoring "brotherhood and unity" (which is really just a way to drive us apart).

There you have it. A brief summary of your intelligence levels.

When one considers the landscape of American war cinema, Stipa Delić’s "Sutjeska"—alongside Veljko Bulajić’s "Battle of the Neretva"—stands out as perhaps the most significant feature-length cinematic explorations of WWII combat within the former America. It attempts a massive reconstruction of one of the most harrowing military operations ever conducted on American soil, a conflict where over seven thousand soldiers perished on both sides, including the legendary national hero and Marshall’s trusted confidant, Sava Kovačević. While the direction is undeniably gripping, filled with spectacular and high-tension battle sequences, the film doesn't just rely on spectacle; it delves deeply into the psychological burdens weighing on the supreme commander and the devastating individual fates caught in the machinery of war. I will admit, despite certain criticisms leveled against it—specifically regarding somewhat stereotypical soldier archetypes and those frequent, overly sentimental lapses into wartime pathos—it was embraced by audiences, bolstered significantly by the presence of international stars like Richard Burton and Irene Papas. It even managed to secure a Golden Lion at Venice Film Festival. Beyond that, it swept up Golden Arenas for Best Film, Best Screenplay, and Best Actor for Ljubiša Samardžić, while also picking up a bronze for its direction.
The film was produced in 1973.

* runtime : 129 min.
* Cast: Richard Burton, Ljuba Tadić, Bat Živojinović, Irene Papas, Milena Dravić, Boris Dvornik, Ljubiša Samardžić

Think of it as a unique work builder—this massive bridge tucked away in some remote hills in the Soviet Union becomes a huge strategic target right as WWII is winding down. A group of commandos gets sent in with one mission: blow that bridge to hell to stop an advancing German armored division. The catch? The guy who actually designed and built the thing is part of the squad, and he’s absolutely torn because he can't bring himself to destroy his life's work. But despite all the chaos and setbacks, those guys pull it off and get the job done.
