Quote: Romero said:Come on, man, Bela Lugosi was making movies about zombies back in the day. We're talking the 1930s. It wasn't all just about vampires. 😉

I mean, come on... the whole mythology of these genres is totally different.

The only thing they really have in common is the word "zombie," and honestly, that's about it. 🙂

Quote: Romero said:FoD is basically just a bunch of autopsy clips mixed with some fake elements; overall, it's mostly a documentary.

Well, from what I've looked into regarding the background of that film, it's actually the exact opposite—it's a pile of fake scenes with actual footage edited in. 🙂

The Dude said:I mean, you’ve got some pretty weird taste if you think all his movies are actually good. Does that include that Village of the Damned remake? Because, honestly, Escape from LA is just a pretty terrible movie.

Yeah, exactly... I guess you also have to throw in Prince of Darkness and They Live. Though, man, that last one has maybe one of the most ridiculous sequences ever put on film. Just constant shouting like, "Put on the glasses!" "No!" "PUT ON THE GLASSES!!!!" "NO!!" It's kind of a mess, I suppose...

Quote: Romero said:Zombie movies have been around since the twenties, so there's no way he just invented a subgenre that's actually been around for decades.

The zombie genre as we know it today—the kind of thing that immediately pops into your head whenever someone just writes the word "zombie"—really didn't exist before '68.

Movies like "I Walked with a Zombie" from back in the 40s don't really have anything to do with Romero's zombie movies—you know, those ones with the apocalyptic scale and the mindless flesh-eaters. As far as I can tell, the only movie that really fits that modern zombie genre vibe before Romero's Night of the Living Dead is Hammer's Plague of the Zombies from '66. Or maybe I'm forgetting something, I guess.

Quote: Romero said:I mean, if you really think about it, Faces of Death is more like a documentary than an actual horror movie. Or maybe it's just somewhere in between... I guess it depends on how you look at it.

Come on, don't be naive. 🙄I mean, I guess you could argue that FoD is just as much of a documentary as Blair Witch is.

but since disco is dead,

does that mean discophilia = necrophilia? 😉

restlesseagle15 said:well, you aren't going to get better

which is fine by me, honestly, because I don't even want to get better 👍

restlesseagle15 said:as long as you keep blaming your behavior on identifying with some stylistic medium.

that sentence doesn't really mean anything, does it? 🙂

is there, really?? 🙄

like: The Streets - Stay Positive 😉
There are quite a few movies where the remake just couldn't quite capture the magic of the original:

Take
The Maltese Falcon and Ben-Hur, for instance...

but then again, you definitely have some remakes that actually work pretty well:

like John Carpenter's The Thing, The Fly, Little Shop of Horrors, or The Man Who Knew Too Much

George A. Romero said:It’s kind of hard to call Italian zombie flicks just copies of American ones, especially when you consider how strong their horror scene was way before the seventies even rolled around.

I mean, George A. Romero basically invented the zombie genre as we know it today, so I guess those Italian movies definitely count as copies if you look at it that way. 😉

And regarding those famous tropes... there's honestly a whole world of American films out there that most people don't even realize exist, and they don't really follow the classic formulas at all (just thinking off the top of my head, like Faces of Death, for example).

The thing is, the stuff that actually makes its way over here usually just represents the mainstream Hollywood side of things.

That’s actually my favorite kind of idiocy, I guess. 😉

restlesseagle15 said:which really just shows what's in your head.

As for me... well, I mean "clear" and
"in your head"
in the same sentence feels like a bit of an oxymoron, maybe.

Noah Watson4 said:So, listen... about Cabin Fever... do you actually agree that the whole horror genre basically died off along with the 80s? I guess. Maybe.

Maybe even with the stuff from the 70s, I guess. 🙂

I guess I’d say it like this... maybe 70 belong to Americans, 80 to Italians, and 90 to the Japanese. 😉,

00? Well, we'll just have to see, I guess. 😉

Noah Watson4 said:So, my friend and I basically went absolutely feral and headed out to catch Cabin Fever, thinking we were just in for another one of those typical, trashy teen horror flicks. Boy, were we wrong. By the end of it, we actually felt nauseous—like, food, water, even sex... everything just seemed gross. We ended up sitting in a pub for maybe half an hour afterward, just quietly sipping on coffee and processing it all. I don't know, it was actually a pretty heavy movie. Especially when you consider how realistic that whole virus subplot feels. It really sticks with you.

I don't know, maybe it’s just me, but Cabin Fever feels a bit overcrowded. You can tell it was made by someone who just absolutely lives and breathes horror, like they were trying to squeeze a little tribute into basically every single scene. It’s got everything in there—you’ve got nods to Texas Massacre, then Braindead and Evil Dead, even some Night of the Living Dead a vibes... it’s all there. But honestly, that’s kind of its biggest flaw. It reminds me a bit of those directors back home who, when they finally get a chance to film something, try to cram in every single influence possible like it's their one shot at greatness or something. Because of that, the movie just didn't really land for me.

When it comes to the special effects, I guess it’s fair to say the production itself was handled pretty well. It looks solid, but then again, maybe that’s just how it is—it feels more like skilled craftsmanship than actual art, if that makes sense. 🙂

Noah Watson4 said:And, well, about that other one... unlike Night of the Living Dead, these others feel way more twisted... I guess Night of the Living Dead is almost too normal by comparison!

Well, I guess they're definitely more sick.

I mean, look, when it comes to analogcobra31, his stuff always felt a bit more grounded to me than everyone else's. I don't know, maybe it’s just me, but his visions always seemed more convincing... I guess. 😉

I don't know

I just can't bring myself to compare those Italian rip-offs to Romero's work...

I mean, what do I know? It’s just that they don't really have that certain something. You scratch the surface a little bit and you realize they're pretty hollow underneath. I wasn't even a huge fan of Argento's cut Dawn of the Dead, honestly—it felt like the movie was turned into a total joke.

It's not that the Italian zombie flicks are bad or anything, but man, they're just not Romero.🙂

I guess I was just thinking about the Evil dead Trilogy again... maybe it's just one of those things that stays in the back of your mind. It’s funny how certain movies just stick, you know? Just sort of drifting through my thoughts today.
Halloween. I guess that's always on my mind this time of year. It’s funny how the season just creeps up on you, isn't it? Maybe it's the weather shifting or just that feeling in the air... anyway, I was thinking about all those classic horror flicks we love. You know, the ones that really set the mood. I've been revisiting some old favorites lately, mostly just drifting through the classics. There's something about that specific vibe from the older stuff—the practical effects, the atmosphere—that modern movies just can't quite catch, I think. Or maybe I'm just being nostalgic. Who knows? Just one of those thoughts.
I was just sitting here thinking about the Hellraiser trilogy—specifically parts I, II, and III. It’s funny how those movies stick with you, isn't it? I guess they have a certain way of getting under your skin that most modern horror just can't replicate. Maybe it's that specific atmosphere, or maybe I'm just being nostalgic. Either way, I've been dwelling on them lately.

Return of the Living Dead II... I guess? Or maybe just thinking about that whole vibe. It’s funny how those sequels always feel like they're trying to capture lightning in a bottle again, but sometimes you just end up with a different kind of storm. Not sure if I'm overthinking it, but there's something about that specific era of horror that just hits differently. Maybe it's just nostalgia, or maybe I'm just getting older. Who knows.
Omen
I guess I was thinking about bad tast Sleepwalkers The Beyond zombie Flesh earlier today... just one of those movies that stays in the back of your mind, you know? Not necessarily because it's a masterpiece, but just because it's... well, it is what it is. Maybe I'm just being nostalgic, or maybe I've just seen too many weird cult classics lately. It’s hard to say.
Sleepwalkers... I don't know, maybe it's just me, but I've been thinking about it lately. It’s one of those movies that stays with you, I guess. Just a strange vibe overall.
Maybe I was just thinking about the whole vibe of the movie *The Beyond* lately... I don't know. It’s one of those films that just sticks in your head, I guess. There's something about that specific kind of atmosphere that feels so heavy, almost like you can feel the heat through the screen. I find myself drifting back to those weird, surreal sequences quite often. It’s hard to pin down exactly why, but maybe it's just that sense of dread that builds up so slowly. Just an odd little thought I had today.
zombie Flesh Eaters
Maybe I was thinking about Eaters The Fog the other day... just one of those movies that sticks in your head, I guess. It’s got that certain vibe, you know? Not sure if it’s the atmosphere or just the way it pulls you in. Just a random thought, really.
Society
Maybe I was just thinking about it today, but I can't help but go back to that one film... you know, Society fra Beyond Re-animator. It’s funny how certain movies just stick in your brain, I guess. I don't know if it's the practical effects or just the general vibe, but there's something about those old classics that hits different. Just a random thought, really.
Re-animator
Cabin Fever

Not a bad list, I guess... but honestly, Cabin Fever feels like it sticks out like a sore thumb on a lineup like this.

I haven't gotten through everything yet, honestly... I still haven't seen Society or Near Dark, so those are totally new to me. 🙂

I don't really get where you're coming from here; you think Demons, Return of the Living Dead II, and zombie Flesh Eaters are all great, but then you say Night is bad... I mean, they're all just different takes on that one irreplaceable original, I guess. 🙂

Anyway, what kind of horror movies do you think are actually good?

Next time maybe just say you aren't really into horror movies instead of totally trashing one of the absolute peaks of the genre 😁
So, I finally sat down yesterday and watched one of those Uwe Boll movies, Alone in the Dark.

I don't know, I guess I was expecting—based on what I read online—that this guy might be some kind of modern-day Ed Wood. You know, like, the movies are terrible, but they're at least fun to watch because they're so weird. But instead, 😲 I mean, the movie is just so bad that I could barely force myself to finish it. It’s honestly such a mess. Not just the directing, but the writing, the acting... everything is just off.

The worst part is, it’s one of those movies that's so bad you can't even laugh at it.

Yeah, I mean, no matter how little he knows, he's still miles ahead of UB.🙂

The movie was decent... ali it really could have been so much better than it was

I guess I just feel like Alfred Hitchcock would've absolutely loved this concept, and he probably would've turned it into something phenomenal. It feels like it was almost made specifically for him, you know? 🙂

The title pretty much gives it away... this movie was practically made to be "Forgotten" 👎

analogcobra31 said:I mean, I agree, this movie definitely has its moments.

But, I guess it might’ve been better if Savini had just tackled a solo project instead. He kind of got tied up working on a horror masterpiece that isn't even just a horror movie—it's just a perfectly made film in every single way. In the first one, everything just worked... the black and white look fit that apocalyptic vision of reality so well, the main actors didn't make it through the arrival of the "living dead," and the living eventually wiped out the zombies at the end. It has a pretty depressing and dark hopeless vibe to it.

👍

The movie just doesn't have that sharp, biting feeling of the original, and that brutal (maybe politically charged?) ending...

And another thing, I don't really agree that fast zombies are "scarier" than these slow ones. Maybe it's because the slow ones create this sense of total hopelessness... no matter how much the main characters struggle or jump around or fight, it all feels kind of pointless when you see them just coming and coming and coming, more and more and more, until you realize the characters just can't win.

Plus, if they actually respected any kind of realism, with those dawn-fast zombies, the movie wouldn't even last five minutes. 😁

they just wouldn't stand a chance

I was wondering if anyone might know the name of a movie:
I saw it maybe 10 years ago, but I can't really remember the actual plot or even the title, just some specific images from it.
Basically, it went something like this:

A house, and inside there's a skeleton tied up in chains, with worms crawling out of its skull. One skull is in some kind of glass jar or aquarium, also totally swarming with worms. There’s tons of foliage everywhere, and the bathroom is just overflowing with cockroaches and worms coming out of shells, the plumbing, the vents, etc. Behind the house—which sits on some kind of rock—there’s a stream or a river, and there's also a corpse in it...

I know I haven't given much to go on, but if anyone happens to know the movie title.

That kind of sounds like the beginning of Phenomenon 👍
