The Rocky Horror Picture Show in Movies ·
So, I finally sat down and watched it yesterday

hmmm... I don't know, it just didn't feel quite weird or campy enough to justify its legendary reputation (you know, being the only movie ever to play continuously in theaters since its '75 premiere), though the songs are pretty decent, and the acting is actually better than I expected (especially Tim Curry 😁), but the plot? It was kind of a blur, honestly (I guess I'll probably have to watch it again to really get it),

Anyway, it's a good flick, I suppose, but I think I was expecting a bit more

maybe I would've liked it better if I'd never seen Little Shop of Horrors

I'm actually curious if there are any true The Rocky Horror Picture Show fans on this forum 😛

So, I was thinking... how do you actually tell if a band is heavy metal or not?

I guess if there's an umlaut in the name, 😁

that might be a giveaway. Like Blue Öyster Cult—they basically kicked off the whole trend with ''

MOTÖRHEAD

and Mötley Crüe

it feels like categorizing music is more about the alphabet than the actual sound anyway, 😛

I mean, BOC is basically a band for people who spend way too much time reading comic books...
I’d bet anything that hollowseal33 doesn't even read them...

comic books... 😛
Would you help a Mexican? in Close to Politics ·
So, since we pretty much nailed that first question with an awesome 😁, let's move right along to the next one:

Would you guys buy a beer for a Mexican?

I mean, personally, I’m kind of a jerk,

so I’d probably pay for his drink if he paid for mine first.

It isn't because he's a Mexican or anything, it's just because I'm a jerk.

You're uninteresting, pushy, and cliché; basically you're just a loser 🙂

Andrew Williams said:I think I could tell you *exactly* what's going on here, it's just a shame BOC didn't intend for that when they wrote the song.

so, you'd say that just because of a beer 😁, man, I'm actually pretty curious to hear your take

I mean, I kind of cheated and looked up the meaning online... I wasn't even close 😳

Man, I’m just now seeing this thread, my bad 😲

I mean, BOC is easily the greatest band ever 🙂 !!!!

There isn't really much to debate here, honestly. Just listen to everything they've put out, anything from start to finish and you won't be disappointed. If I had to pick favorites, I'd say Secret Treaties, Cultosaurus Erectus, and the one-of-a-kind Imaginos—which some critics even went so far as calling the best heavy metal album ever made. They weren't exactly wrong... 😁

Their sound is just something else. It's what everyone should listen to if they think nothing intelligent can come out of heavy metal. How did people used to describe them??? Something like... the thinking man's heavy metal band...

ahhhh.... such a shame they aren't touring anymore... 😢 they were the best and they always will be

Personally, I think Astronomy is their best track... I'll buy a beer for anyone who can actually figure out what it's about 😁
Radiohead sucks in Music ·
Honestly, you guys are being so rude. Don't you realize that every single time someone says "Radiohead gets on my nerves," a little fairy dies in the alternative rock heavens?? 😳

man, ahhh those good old 😍days

Man, where are you living? It shouldn't even matter what someone looks like... I mean, at the end of the day, it's about who they are as a person, right?

😂

swiftcrane74 said:man, I don't know, I found A Mighty Wind a bit slow, though maybe that bit at the end where they get stuck performing a song they didn't even want was okay. 😁

😁

it's kind of like a parody of how bands like Sabbath used to have these huge, over-the-top stage setups that made it almost impossible to actually perform... 😁

but for me, my favorite part has to be when that little Stonehenge stone comes down and those two dwarves start dancing around it. 😂

those lyrics are pretty intense, too;

Stonehenge where the demons dwell, where the banshees live and they do live well.... 🙂

I don't know, I was just checking IMDb and saw that Christopher Guest directed this one too, and apparently, it’s all about parodying folk bands. I guess it's hard to say... do you think it actually holds up as well as This Is Spinal Tap, or is it just kind of a cheap imitation?

I guess there's just such a thin line between being totally clueless and actually being brilliant.

The Sound of Music

eeeeeeeeee finally got around to watching it 👋

Movies rule, man. It’s just this brilliant little thing about a director making a rockumentary about some fake hard rock band—you know, their whole rise, fall, and eventual path to fame (in Japan, obviously). I mean, I haven't laughed that hard in a while. It's honestly killer, especially if you used to be, currently are, or plan on being a fan of those hard rock gods 🙂

Yeah, I feel the same way. Honestly, it’s such a genius deconstruction of an entire era, plus it's a great comedy. The hairstyles alone? Iconic. And the endless supply of "deep" philosophy... everything is just perfect. The acting is spot on, the script is hilarious... everything. I guess I'm just bummed I'm twenty years late to seeing this masterpiece, but it was totally worth catching this absolute cult classic...

🙏

brrrrr... still kind of reeling from it...
casualotter21 said:Nah, I think the big thing is that Jim Carrey and his girlfriend go to the movies at the start of the film to watch this old black-and-white action flick from the 1930s called "The Pirates of the Caribbean". And just when the evil bedouin is about to kill the lead actress, BRUCE CAMPBELL SHOWS UP!!! Dressed exactly like those 1930s explorers, saber in hand and everything!
Bedouin: "YOR PERSTIZTENZ IST FERY IRITATING!"
Bruce:"Yeah, I get that a lot."

On the DVD, Majestic includes "The Pirates of the Caribbean" as a special feature, which runs for maybe ten minutes or so.

Honestly, I’d say it was worth getting just for that alone.$4.00

🙂

But wait, why Quentin Tarantino? I guess I’d probably pick Sam Raimi or maybe even Tim Burton instead.
What an absolute idiot I am 😵

I just realized what was missing from this movie...

Bruce Campbell in the lead role!!!!!
Icepick said:I'm not saying it's a bad idea or anything, it isn't really, but I guess pulling off a concept like that takes a certain level of expertise and some room to breathe creatively, which just wasn't really something this director had to work with.

so basically we're all pretty much agreeing that it could have been better... maybe just a little bit... or even just a tiny hair... 😁
Adam Wright56 said:I have to admit, I don't really get where you guys—and maybe Jang too—are coming from with this idea that it actually needed to be a serious movie. 😕 [/B]

well, nobody ever said it had to be some heavy, serious drama 😕

I'm just saying the movie isn't quite as good as it could've been if someone a bit more talented had handled it...

the scenes feel kind of cold, I guess; like, "okay, here come the dinosaurs, but whatever, moving on, oh look, there's a flying fortress, but who cares, let's get back to the plot." It lacks those big "wow" moments, you know? That's what bugs me about it. Honestly, I get chills just imagining what the SS would've done with that scene where they first spot the massive flying ship lost among the clouds 😍. You can just picture a Williamsonian orchestra playing in the background, all that grandeur, maybe some childish sentimentality, a little lens flare in the corner of the screen... just big, sweeping music... 😍

and the script itself isn't bad at all, actually, it's pretty well-written in its own way...
Karen Diaz32 said:I mean, to me, that movie just feels like the pure essence of style. It’s directed with such an effortless vibe...

Honestly, I feel like any single episode of Dexter or Samurai Jack or even the Powerpuff Girls is probably better directed than this whole movie. *That* is what true style looks like, I guess. It’s kind of a bummer that Gendy and the rest of that crew aren't making movies nowadays...

Karen Diaz32 said:He’d probably just end up making some pretentious, sterile crap, which seems to be his thing ever since he tried to prove himself as a "serious director" with Schindler's List.

🙂
I mean, this movie... it honestly had the potential to be one of the greatest things ever made, maybe even better than Raiders. Just thinking about it.

But, man, I don't know... it feels like he just didn't quite have the touch to direct it with any real style. He’s probably a rookie, I guess, which you can definitely tell. Everything builds up so nicely, too—he actually gets it right up to that edge where you start getting goosebumps, you know? But then, he just kind of stalls out. It’s like he never really had the ideas to actually push you over that ledge.

I guess I've been wondering lately... what would someone with a Spielberg sensibility actually do if they were tasked with making a movie about the Golden Age of Comics? It’s an interesting thought, maybe. Just imagining that specific kind of storytelling applied to those early, larger-than-life hero tropes. I wonder how much of that classic wonder he'd try to squeeze into it. Maybe it wouldn't be just a superhero flick, but something more... I don't know, heartfelt? Just a random thought I had while sitting here.

I guess we might never actually find out... maybe.

Hold on... wait, I think I see Indy in there.😁
