Vuhuuu! I won.
But seriously, I think I'm gonna close this thread. The way it's set up, it's probably just going to turn into a basic argument over top lists, and I don't think we really need that kind of stuff here.
So, now that we’ve finally bid farewell to the old '08, maybe we can take a second to look back at everything we watched last year. Feel free to talk about the movies that really stuck with you, or maybe the ones that just totally let you down—whatever defined the year for you. Just, uh, please don't just drop a massive list of titles without saying anything. I'll have to delete those because the whole point isn't to make a fanboy checklist.
Personally, last year wasn't much to write home about. Honestly, if it were an animal, I'd probably want to shoot it. Every time someone mentions the word "movie" alongside "2008," I just think about Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and how it was easily one of the worst cinematic experiences Steven Spielberg has ever put me through. 😁 It felt like being mugged on a first date. A movie where the script should honestly just be recycled into toilet paper, and the actual footage should be sealed in a titanium thermos, buried six miles underground, and then we all just pretend for the rest of our lives that it was all just a bad dream.
As for the good stuff... I don't know, nothing really blew me away. 😕
If you need a little help jogging your memory, here is the list of movies from last year (mostly American stuff).
It’s been such a long time since I sat down to watch this that I actually forgot just how good it is. 😍 Even with the way the local network totally butchered the edit here.
The way the characters are so aware of their own messy situations... it's just brilliant. 😁
Milo: You must be James. Jimmy Dix: [sarcastically] James? Joe Hallenbeck: He does that with everybody. He keeps calling me Joseph.
Joe Hallenbeck: [Holds his gun to Darian's Head ] Give me The Keys or i shoot The Kid
Joe Hallenbeck: All private detectives are scumbags. Jimmy Dix: Yeah, but that scumbag tried to get you killed. Joe Hallenbeck: Yeah well, friends can't be perfect. I wish that water wasn't wet, I wish the sky wasn't blue and I wish that I didn't still love my wife. Ahh, life sucks! 😍
Now I'm just sitting here waiting for him to break out a square dance at the end. 😁
David Price5 said:So, we're talking about those ultra-serious movies that feature unintentionally hilarious scenes? Back when I watched Fargo, there was that moment where Peter Stormare is holding Steve Buscemi's leg... anyone who has seen it knows exactly what kind of chaos is unfolding there.
I wouldn't say that scene was unintentionally funny. To me, it feels like a perfect example of that classic Coen brothers dark humor.
And as for that list of hideous things, I really have no comment. 🙄
Let's not get carried away talking about Batman here; I think we already have a dedicated thread for him. Let's just try to stick to this movie for now. 😉 Offtopic deleted.
I used to have that same night phase too, pretty much identical to what everyone mentioned above... I can't quite remember what my condition was called though... oh, right, studying 🙂
Everything here seems pretty nice and all... and look, I don't want to be a total buzzkill, but I think you guys have me on the completely wrong page... and honestly, I'm just lost on what to do with this. It’s kind of like when I was a kid and I'd try to put the key in the door the wrong way because that's just how my dad taught me to do it, I guess.
It’s not like nobody has a clue here. It’s just that, I don't know, I'm kind of stuck on what else there is to say about it. 😁 To me, those old-school Italian horror flicks feel a bit like consumer tech; nothing feels totally groundbreaking, just old ideas pushed to some new extreme.
But they aren't bad movies. Not by a long shot. They're basically required reading for any horror fan. Or, well, maybe more like a phase you go through rather than mandatory reading.
Here is a killer little anecdote about how Aliens came to be (I actually just stumbled upon this online the other day):
From fra Hello He Lied by Linda Obst. Story told by Gordon Carroll, Executive Producer, Aliens.
"Cameron was young. He had just directed Terminator. Cameron had called a meeting to discuss his “next project.” Everyone knew Cameron Had written a treatment for alien 2 that nobody would touch because alien was not a Massive financial success. alien 2 was not on The table. WE expected a Professional pitch from Cameron, an outline and a treatment of what he had in mind with a cursory budget; perhaps a couple assistants to run a slide show. Instead Cameron walked in the room without so much as a piece of paper. He went to the chalk board in the room and simply wrote the word ALIEN. Then he added an ‘S’ to make ALIENS. Dramatically, he drew two vertical lines through the ‘S’, ALIEN$. He turned around and grinned. We greenlit the project that day for $18 million."
Nick absolutely killed it. He was jumping, twisting, crouching, crawling... just total chaos. He was practically eating the crowd, throwing pieces of himself out there, and in typical fashion, he kept frustrating people by messing around with the choruses and adding these weird improvisations. My only real gripe was how he used that Grinderman sound to basically butcher every single song—I mean, sure, it sounded heavy and high-energy and all, but it made everything feel unrecognizable, which honestly got a bit exhausting toward the end of the show. And... what the hell was that smell in the front rows at one point? Did someone actually set off tear gas or something? 😕
Maybe give it another shot? It would be great if you could actually mention what kind of movie we're talking about—like, what's the plot, who directed it, or when it came out. Or even just some of your own random thoughts on it... I don't know, maybe why you're so interested in hearing what everyone else thinks. Posts that are this thin usually don't really get much traction here.
The trailer doesn't exactly scream "masterpiece," I guess. Still, that first movie had this vibe, kind of like a horror version of The Goonies, you know? It might be interesting to see how those two handle things now that they're grown up. Maybe.
Hey there. Honestly, this flick doesn't really bring anything groundbreaking to the table, but I think the whole reality survivalist concept fits into the plot pretty smoothly. It’s got a solid atmosphere—especially that hospital sequence—and a real sense of hopelessness. Plus, the directing is good, and you know, that classic Romero-style way of peeling back layers of the real world through a zombie story... it just kind of lifts it above all the other mediocre stuff out there. Personally, I think it works better than The Blair Witch Project. Definitely worth a watch.
