blueranger12 said:In today's cutthroat marketing landscape, being Confident is basically a survival skill. If you don't make some noise, you just fade into the background and disappear. Honestly, modesty doesn't really pay the bills anymore. That’s why I don't judge people for showing off if it's the only way to get ahead... It reminds me of that old Grunfov saying: If you stand out, you matter. If you don't, you don't. And if you matter, you have to stand out. 😁

That wasn't quite my point, though... I was talking more about that unnecessary self-promotion in places where it just feels wrong. Like, acting all high and mighty in a social circle or something. Confident people don't usually feel the need to do that.
In your career, obviously, you have to speak up about what you can do. That isn't being cocky, it's just common sense. It's expected. Because if you don't explicitly state what you bring to the table—and then actually prove it—someone else is going to step in and take your spot, while you sit there being "modest" and watching your opportunities slip away... 😁

blueranger12, I think you missed the mark on this one. 😁
It’s not really that I think being a confident guy makes someone a jerk... it’s more that what 😉
Mark Hughes36 posted as an example isn't actually modesty at all. It's just being an asshole.
And honestly, I totally agree that a Confident man can still be humble. In fact, he might be the only one who can be, simply because he has enough self-assurance that he doesn't feel this constant, desperate need to show off...

Mark Hughes36 said:Here’s an easy way to look at it... a beautiful girl might shout "I'm gorgeous!" from the rooftops, or she might be a bit more modest about her looks—whether that's because she's feeling a little insecure, or maybe she feels some kind of "guilt" for being pretty, or just for some other reason entirely...

So, you're basically saying modesty is just being a pushover. 😁

a) a lack of being Confident
b) a lack of being Confident + just being dim-witted

Since you didn't really define that last part, I can't exactly weigh in on it either... 😁

Sloan said:Your[/I] assumption that you’re just built that way isn't always an absolute truth in every single context. It used to be more of a 🤔 social 🙂 agreement. In that light, being confident about your sense of humor would mean recognizing that while most people usually get it, if they don't, it’s simply because their internal yardsticks are different. Either way, there's no way to force someone to see that quality in you if they don't already... Without some significant shift in how they perceive things, 😁 😁 😁

You’ve got a point there, and honestly, just add the fact that some people couldn't care less about anyone else's standards or the outcomes they produce—they only play by their own set of rules—and you've basically described me. 😂

And yeah, I'm with you on that first part too, since even our personal systems are built upon "concepts" that we all share.
But then again, half of what makes a person who they are can't really be squeezed into a neat little definition, because some things just defy rational explanation... 😉
When I talk about self-awareness, I'm not just talking about listing traits or descriptions. I mean truly understanding how you function, why you react the way you do instead of some other way, and all those other messy details that are just too complex for words.
We might all be made of the "same" basic parts, but the intensity and the way they’re wired together is unique to everyone... so trying to make a direct "comparison" with others doesn't really hold much water...
How to build real self-confidence? in Psychology ·
Hmm... 🤔 So, what you're actually saying is that if we want to define anything—including ourselves—we first have to wrap our heads around specific terms? And since those terms all lean on one another and share overlapping meanings, it becomes this whole interconnected web of definitions...

Exactly. 😁

Hmm... I still can't quite get past the idea that who other people are doesn't really matter when you're trying to figure out yourself.
What if you stumble upon a trait in yourself that you've never seen in anyone else? Can you even truly recognize it? 😉

Klota said:Being humble (according to Anic) means you don't brag, you don't act like a big shot...
basically, you aren't making huge demands or acting like you need anything fancy or grand.

Look, I’m not a humble person. 😁
And I’m definitely not one of those people who puts on a "fake humble" act—you know, pretending a quality is smaller than it actually is just to look good—but at the same time, I won't lie and claim I have something I don't. 😁
Plus, I have plenty of demands and ambitions. Honestly, I don't see any reason why I shouldn't go after them and try to make them happen. At the end of the day, everyone wants the absolute best for themselves (whatever that looks like for them or whatever their own standards might be)... and if they fail to get it because someone told them they had to stay "modest," well, that's really their own problem. 😁
wearyowl29 said:And how many other people are actually calling the shots there???😢

In the "official" sense—you know, at work or just dealing with society as a whole—they control certain things where you really can't avoid their influence. I mean, damn, they've got the leverage...😁

But on a personal level? I'm the one in charge. Of myself, obviously...😁

But you're really not.
Honestly... it's just cringey to watch.

And there it is. Just a textbook example right there. 🙂
I don't care about how I look to you, but I care about how I look to myself... and you aren't even trying to act. 😁

Larry Cruz51 said:Confidence is such an incredible feeling. But honestly? You don't just conjure it out of thin air... it’s built on how the world reacts to you. If 90% of people tell me I look great, then yeah, I’m going to feel pretty good about myself. If they tell me I look terrible, well, my confidence is going to take a hit too... unless, of course, my IQ is basically non-existent.

See, the thing is, I’ll still think what I think, even if 90 out of 100 people tell me the exact opposite... or something completely different. 😁
And I definitely don't think my brain is functioning at an amoeba level. 😂
I just see the world through my own eyes... and frankly, I couldn't care less what everyone else sees. 😉
But since even I 😍 can be wrong sometimes, I have to agree with Sloan on this one:
When you're truly confident, wrong criticism doesn't sting because you know it's wrong, and right criticism doesn't hurt because it actually helps you grow. And the more self-assured you are, the less vanity gets in the way of actually listening.

Tyler Grant76 said:How can you even begin to know who you are if you don't have anything to measure yourself against? 😁 How do you gauge it? 😍 😬
You end up measuring yourself against whatever people you happen to know who might be a step ahead of you...

But what does any of that actually matter? Whether you're "better or worse" than someone else—you're still just who you are. 😁
Honestly, constantly comparing yourself to others is usually the quickest way to ensure you never become the person you actually want to be... 😂

Tyler Grant76 said:You have to aim for the absolute peak just so you can experience that massive drop... it's what gives you the momentum to rise back up.🙂

I don't know, I guess I’d say you should just be true to who you are... and then try to reach your own version of the top.😁

Paul said:I’d just add that it’s easy to feel confident when you’ve got this whole safety net behind you supporting every move.
If that disappears, you lose a part of yourself—maybe even all of it—along with that sense of certainty.

Chuckles! 😂
And if that happens... honestly, maybe you didn't deserve it anyway. 😛

Real confidence is about having faith in Self. That’s literally what it means.

If your entire foundation relies on outside support, and losing that makes you crumble, then you were never actually confident to begin with... 😁

The real base for confidence isn't other people... it's knowing who you are and, more importantly, being honest with Self.
Most people just love to lie to themselves, though... so a lot of what looks like "confidence" is really just built on shaky ground, acting a part, or just plain old ego... 🙂

Impossible? Absolutely impossible.

Prophets lie, so do the fortune tellers—whether they’re spiritual or just playing pretend, whether they're being funny or dead serious.

Does your soul ache when you tell a lie? What about your spirit? 😉

As if I'd feel anything. It's not her lying, it's me. 😁

Anyway... Zvonkec wasn't really thinking about his wording there. I think he meant to say "from now on, let's just be honest," which would actually be a pretty great idea. 😁
But "truth" is such a tricky concept... either nobody knows what it actually is, or there are a dozen different versions of it floating around, and then you're just left wandering aimlessly... 😁
Chicago Bulls fans said:Honestly, those Germans are actually pretty great! They somehow manage to make even the commercials before the movie start out entertaining...🙄 Man, if I actually knew what they were talking about, those commercials would probably be pretty funny to me too...

I wouldn't go for that... 😛
I mean, some of them were just fun simply because they were fun... they just had that vibe. They were good for what they were... 🙂
So, right after those, there’s this movie where you can actually hear that German millionaire jerk's voice doing his best impression of Harrison Ford...🙄 Idiots... they really have to synchronize every single movie.

I totally sign off on this... honestly, I was such a hater back before DVDs even became a thing. I still have my gripes when it comes to going to the cinema, but it’s not as big of a deal anymore since I actually have the option to watch movies in their original language at home now...
Lately, in some of the bigger cities, they’ve actually started rolling out non-sync versions in theaters over the last year or two... And apparently, there aren't even subtitles either, from what I've been hearing... 😁
Chicago Bulls fans said:It’s just way too crowded... honestly, it’s getting pretty intense. 😲 Everyone just crowded into that Regal Cinemas... honestly, that’s always been its biggest downside. Aside from all those endless commercials, too...👎

Seriously? Man... I feel so bad about that...
So, I was in D.C. the other day and caught a screening of Collateral... Honestly, my entire row was basically just me. There were maybe four other people in the whole theater... barely anyone there at all... 😁
I grabbed some popcorn too, and honestly, those seats are incredibly comfortable... really impressed with them. 👍 And honestly, the movie was pretty mediocre too, so all things considered... I'd say the night was a win. 😁

Look, if you’re actually looking to enjoy an empty theater without anyone breathing down your neck... don't bother rushing out for the opening night premiere. Just wait until the movie is about to get pulled from the schedule at the local AMC... that's when you'll finally get some peace... 😛

And those commercials... man, what a disaster. It’s not just that they won't stop playing, it's where on earth do they even find such absolute nonsense to air? Back in Germany, the cinema ads are actually somewhat entertaining... but here in the States, they feel like they were designed for someone with an IQ of 25... 🙄

A few days ago, I caught Alexander at the DC Cinema... It was actually pretty noticeable how few commercials there were. Just two or three, and then the movie finally started...

So, I was just reading some stuff about people taking breaks right in the middle of a movie... Are you guys actually kidding me? 😲
Just aim it straight at the projector... 😁

I thought the cinema was a total steal, too. Back home, they absolutely rip you off... they charge you double for everything... $17 Just for the ticket... 🙂

To be honest, now that you mention it, I actually went and looked up how long it really lasts. 🤣
Time flies when I'm watching stuff like this too. 😁
But the actual movie is shorter. You’re guaranteed to lose at least those 7 minutes to the intermission and the break. There’s this pause in the middle where some text pops up on the screen, but the crew didn't bother translating it. 😢
Or maybe "intermezzo" *is* the translation? 🤔 Anyway, you just see some text on screen and hear some Japanese music playing. A few minutes pass, and then the movie picks back up.

Aside from the clever Toshir (who is always being 😁), the biggest waste for me was Yohei. 😁
God knows where > dug him up... Throughout the whole movie, the guy looks like he’s crying, even when he’s supposed to be laughing. 🤣
