House of Flying Daggers in Movies ·
MRAQ said:Caught this at the theater yesterday.......
My thoughts.....

Usually, I'm all about the kung fu stuff... and those kinds of vibes, but House of Flying Daggers... just didn't hit the mark for me..

Here's why......

It tries way too hard to be romantic, but it totally misses the vibe..
Zhang Yimou always feels kind of cold to me....
That ending where she sacrifices herself for him....(I actually burst out laughing when I saw Zhang getting up from the snow... man, talk about overacting)....Like, seriously, don't scrape your leg just to make it bleed......👎 👎
That bamboo fight scene... wasn't really my thing...
The drum dance..... honestly, such a bore...
Tons of plot holes too.....
And way too much chaos during the final showdown....

Some good parts though.......

Takeshi... as the lead guy... was definitely the best part of the whole movie
Those opening fights (hand-to-hand, no weapons)
The use of bow and arrow...
🙂

All in all, I won't be watching this again.

It’s a mistake to judge movies from other cultures through your own lens. You gotta stay open to new ideas and different ways of seeing the world.
Even if you still end up hating the movie, at least you gave it a shot. 😁

northernfalcon30 said:Blade Runner is basically my religion—my cinematic altar🙏. I honestly feel too unworthy to even pull it off my shelf... I just close my eyes and try to picture that neon rain falling over fading memories... ("I've seen things you people wouldn't believe... attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion, C-beams glittering in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate... all those moments will be lost in time, like tears in the rain...") — if I remember that right...

Gonna read the book first just to get in the right headspace for this movie.
But fair warning... the absolute best characters and scenes aren't even in the film... 😢

👍

Grimm Knows has some seriously good stuff to work with. Have you guys ever actually sat down and read the original Grimm stories?
Not those sanitized, Disneyesque versions you see in picture books—I mean the real deal. The stuff about incest, wicked mothers, limbs getting chopped off, all that barbarism... man, I have such high hopes for this movie.

Actually, the tales they recorded weren't even originally German—they were mostly French. They were told by French refugees living in Germany (after some revolution over there, I think) and so on. And the Grimm brothers definitely made things up and threw in their own twists. Can't wait 👏

😍

Just rewatched Adventures of Baron Munchausen the other day.
Not sure if you could even call it sci-fi? Honestly, there’s probably a solid case to be made for both sides...

Totally one of the best... but really just the first one.

And that Danny movie could've been better—but I only brought it up because the book series is just killer.

off topic:

Back when I was a kid, I had a huge crush on Nicholas Sanchez43... used to dream about us living in New Orleans 😳
Then my friend told me that place is basically a total dump unlike anywhere else. 😬 (I guess that works as an ad for him).

All in all, great handle & name 🤣

on:

The first one actually wasn't bad.

just remembered I totally forgot to mention Brazil🙏

You both brought up my absolute favorite sci-fi flicks Brazil & 12 Monkeys 👍

I'd also just throw in Pitch Black
😁 (huge Riddick fan here 🎉 )

P. S. everything mentioned so far is killer 👍

My coworker Amerikanka told me I had to see this. Smart enough for you?
Just a heads up—you’re gonna lose every argument if you start generalizing... 😉
Plus, if you actually managed to get into a fight with ironcrane7... well, that says a lot about how mature you are 🤣

I knocked this one back while sipping on half a bottle of Chianti—and honestly, the movie was killer. (Chianti hits different...) 🙂

It's awful... I mean, does a person really have to die just because the Pope dies?
The last few days have been brutal—the same news every thirty minutes, not a single movie playing, even the AMC Theatres are closed.
One word: terrible.

You should see CNN. They'll just cut away from coverage in Rome to show a report from Krakow, or maybe just read the weather forecast.
A little off-topic here—but after dealing with a death in my family recently, getting out of the house just to catch a movie actually helped me more than I expected...
For me, movies aren't just about killing time—they can be pretty therapeutic, at least in my experience.

I totally get wanting to honor the death of the pope, but shutting down all the theaters seems like a bit much.
There were way better ways to handle this that wouldn't feel so extreme. Like, maybe donate all the ticket sales—or even half—to a scholarship fund for seminarians or some charity the Holy Father cared about. This whole move by the city officials feels a bit too "isolating," if you ask me...

Richard Hernandez13 said:Honestly, Castro's (and Che Guevara's) Cuba isn't exactly the paradise of social justice and equality people make it out to be... I feel like we all got shortchanged by his darker side.

off topic...
That fat pig Castro needs to pay a visit... just to face the fate that caught up with Ernest.
And then you just end up going back a second time because of Cuba...

This is the Che Guevara everyone puts on their t-shirts and sticks on their walls...

👍 Good catch... definitely noticed that too.
Walter Lee7 said:It’s so true—you watch this movie and suddenly you're just picturing yourself out there in those massive, beautiful landscapes!!! It gives you this weird, unknown feeling... at least it did for me. I walked out of the AMC Theatres with a grin from ear to ear!!! Just felt totally stoked after!!!!

👍

Even a "genius" like me finally realized why they called him Che 😵 (plus my best friend from school is Argentine)

But man, they absolutely kill it live. Saw them last year...
The energy is just unreal. A total spectacle. 🙂
