Struggling with pain pill addiction in Health ·
steelsailor17 said:Not sure if we're even talking about the same thing, but those aspirin pills based on acetylsalicylic acid

😉 look, it’s not rocket science—Advil, NyQuil, and stuff like that aren't actually acetylsalicylic acid (though Aspirin and Tylenol are). Personally, I take Aspirin and Tylenol daily to keep my heart in check—just don't take them on an empty stomach or you'll regret it.

As for the rest of the thread, steelsailor17 👍 nice one; that whole "Vitamin C massage sex therapy" bit was pretty hilarious 👍

Thomas Mendoza5 said:Can you actually get hooked on Advil? 😕

Sneeze, they don't even do anything for me...

They don't work for me either—unless you count my stomach dying from the acid. But, I knew this woman who was popping 10 a day (literally every single day!!!). It’s definitely not harmless: her kidneys and liver just completely gave out.

swifttinker6; maybe try not taking them the second your head starts throbbing. If it's a migraine, Advil isn't the move (you need something like Sumatriptan or whatever). Sometimes the pain is basically all in your head anyway. Btw, I strictly stick to Advil for pain relief since it breaks down in the gut and is easier on my stomach --> not trying to give you tips on starting a new habit here...

Anyway, why do you think you're addicted? What happens if you skip a dose???

Daniel Lopez; you actually using this stuff? Btw, curious if there are any side effects—does that little pamphlet say anything besides just being allergic to shellfish? 😢 Also, I noticed it says everything just gets flushed out through your stool... does that mean we're talking five trips to the bathroom a day?

Hannah Price3 said:Do you know anything more about how these kinds of disorders relate to pregnancy? I read somewhere they often pop up after pregnancy, or even during it for women whose levels are being managed with medication.

Yeah, makes sense. Hormones go absolutely haywire during pregnancy—kind of like the Democratic Party during an election year.

Hannah Price3 said:Also, I'm wondering what the consequences might be for the baby if a disorder like this isn't caught early enough.

A friend of mine dealt with hyperthyroidism and she’s still dealing with issues today—she has two kids, by the way. But honestly, you really need to run that by your endocrinologist and OBGYN.
[QUO Is it possible for the thyroid to just go rogue and swing between dumping too many hormones and not enough? [/B]

Totally possible—especially if you're dealing with cysts or something—but here's the kicker: hypo and hyper symptoms overlap so much it’s a mess. Plus, half the time it's all in your head—like, you start overthinking, "Oh man, I'm hyper right now," and then your heart starts racing just from the anxiety. Get some actual blood work done; you can't diagnose yourself just by vibing with your symptoms.
Hannah Price3 said:That bulging eye thing happens because with the hypo version (still trying to remember the full medical term) the body builds up this slime-like stuff that settles in certain spots—behind the eye socket, around the wrists (which can trigger carpal tunnel since it presses on the nerve), or just under the skin making you look sort of puffy or swollen.

Hannah Price3; spot on, though what you’re describing is basically a mixed thyroid issue. Those bulging eyes—exophthalmos—can also pop up with hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid).

Btw, as long as your hormone levels stay within range, doctors won't throw meds at you. But thyroid hormones are super fickle—you could have totally different labs just a week apart. Anyway, getting an ultrasound is usually a good move—it’s quick and doesn't hurt. Sometimes they suggest a scintigraphy, but since that involves injecting radioactive iodine into your blood (or whatever they use now?), a lot of docs aren't big fans of it—I think it's becoming pretty rare unless it's a special case.

But the actual question was what a hormonal imbalance even is... and honestly, depending on which gland or hormone we're talking about, there's way too much to write here.

The big ones are usually reproductive issues (like PCOS), thyroid problems (hyper or hypo), and adrenal gland stuff. Usually, when one hormone goes sideways, it drags the others down with it—even if just a little—but once you fix the main culprit, everything else tends to level out.

If anyone actually wants to nerd out on this, just hit up a health site and do some digging.
Anyone ever had penicillin shots? in Health ·
Long time. Honestly, shots are way better than pills—oral penicillin absolutely wrecks my stomach. If I remember right, the injection stings like crazy, and you have to hang out at the clinic for a bit afterward just in case an allergic reaction kicks in. They used to rotate my sites every single day (for 😢 three weeks total); still ended up with bruises on both sides, though—couldn't even sleep on my side because of the soreness.

Again, if I ever need heavy-duty penicillin, I’m taking the needle over the pills any day.

Can you actually eat whatever you want, Andrew Anderson6, without it making you feel sick?

Yeah,😁 the only upside is😁 I'm also way too high-strung...

Btw, my hormones are hitting the upper limit right now, and I’ve got this cyst—won't even get into the details because honestly, the sensation of needles poking at my neck is just gross.🙂 Regardless, that thing (the cyst) goes wild whenever my PMS cycle hits, which means dealing with all the usual horrors—hunger pangs, Tachycardia, you name it.

But it feels the same as when it used to prick me; once it settles down, things are fine again...

😁 It goes something like this: smaller organisms, higher body temp, faster heart rate, shorter lifespan 😁 😁

That’s what a buddy told me to cheer me up when my Tachycardia hit 160 bpm. It was a thyroid thing—plus I basically run at a constant 99°F anyway—so his big takeaway was basically, "Congrats, you're turning into a hummingbird." 😁

Kenneth Hernandez67 said:Cellasen😲

Aren't those the ones everyone is obsessed with right now for fighting cellulite?😲

They are—but funny how none of the ads mention a single side effect. I actually asked my aunt at the CVS to grab the insert first so I could read the fine print, and apparently, there's iodine in there that can trigger hyperthyroidism, heart palpitations (you know, the whole thyroid mess), and anyone with thyroid issues needs to be super careful and blah blah blah...

Whatever, I guess I'll just live with my cellulite.

Based on what was said, that product messes with your hormone balance.

Yeah, but honestly, most weight loss stuff and those "anti-cellulite" gimmicks do the exact same thing. Like those cellulite pills—something with "cel..." in the name, I can't recall—where the fine print basically admits they could crank up your thyroid activity 😲 👎. So, weighing the risks against the actual benefits? Not exactly a hard math problem. 👎

None of these weight loss pills can be any good in my book. I'm convinced the only way to lose weight "the right way" is just hitting the gym harder and actually fixing your diet.

And regarding laxatives: if I ever felt like I needed one, I’d much rather stick to the old-school home remedies—dried prunes, fruit, whole grains, stuff like that. The issue with all those commercial laxatives is that they eventually stop working and actually make things worse in the long run; so don't just rush out and grab the pills.

Just to be clear: I'm not anti-medication—I'll take antibiotics if I need them and all that—but I really think weight loss products are pretty much useless (and often sketchy), plus you already saw my take on the laxative situation...

placidfalcon said:I stopped drinking straight tap water after seeing what happens when you actually boil it. Seriously, do it once and you'll never look at your sink the same way...

You’re probably just talking about those weird stains left behind after boiling—mostly just minerals from the local city water supply, honestly.
Scalp issues in Health ·
I feel like any shampoo labeled "anti-dandruff" is probably fine—honestly, just grab whatever—but I’d definitely suggest pairing it with some B vitamins, specifically B6. It really helps.

I saw some talk recently about how those Britney filters aren't actually all that great—apparently they leave just enough limescale behind while dumping other weird junk into the water. Honestly, whenever I drink that Britney stuff, I'm sprinting to the restroom. Usually, if I can drink straight from the tap, I'm good to go. If not, I'll just grab a bottle of Dasani or something...
Alan said:Maybe it’s cute when you're younger, but once you hit 40, it just feels kind of ridiculous—people stop taking you seriously.

😕 oh wow, and why's that??? 🙄 so basically, 39 is fine, but then you just expire...

sorry, but this is... uh... hilarious (trying to be polite here)

I mean, if someone's actually bothered by it, they can always go see a speech therapist or something, why not...
