Mediocrity is everywhere in Psychology ·
Dana Morales64 said:Personally, I’m much more of an outdoorsman. Any spare moment I get, I’m out driving or just wandering around—exploring the area, seeing what’s out there. I can't stand being cooped up indoors or staying stuck in one single spot for too long.

Fair enough, I get that... but eventually, it all starts feeling pretty much the same.😉>

so, how do you even live 🤷

i just assumed most people were stuck in that whole work-home-bar loop

plus, once you hit a certain age, partying just wears you out. you end up having way more stuff to deal with at home🙂

Jerry Martinez5 said:Ha, personally, what kills me is that I can't seem to actually establish a routine at all.😁

I'm not joking: it isn't pleasant when you're stuck in such chaos that you have zero clue what your day will look like tomorrow.

The ideal scenario would probably be finding a balance—having a set ratio of habits and routines on one hand, while leaving enough breathing room for new experiences on the other. And that could be anything: for instance, I'm trying out a new recipe tonight and I'm pretty happy about it. 😉

Habits are great if you actually enjoy them. Take my morning coffee ritual, for example: I definitely don't want to break that "routine," though I'd certainly be more satisfied if my other meals were scheduled, maybe roughly at the same time every day. Or if hitting the gym became a regular thing so I didn't have to force myself to go to the movies or a play: 👍

So, I think it's not the routine itself that kills people, but rather the fact that their routine consists of things they don't even enjoy.

I envy you.

Habits are great if you actually enjoy them. Like my morning coffee ritual—I refuse to break that pattern. I’d probably be happier if my meals were more scheduled too, maybe eating at roughly the same time every day. And if hitting the gym was part of the routine so I didn't have to force myself to go to the movies or a play: 👍

Meals and most of the stuff you mentioned are easy; I guess it's all about discipline. I get the meal thing if you're busy, you could just pack a lunch.😍
As for working out, it's just learned behavior. You get into the groove after a few days.🤷 It's a decent way to vent stress.😍
I don't really get the movie or theater thing, though... that's never been a routine for me. More like a treat; I only go when something actually looks interesting.

That's why I think people aren't killed by routine, but by routines made up of things they hate doing.

I don't know, I don't really agree with that... I mean, you have to work, even at jobs you hate, for the sake of money.😍You have to shower, cook, clean, do laundry... but everyone can afford at least half an hour of something they enjoy every day, even if it's just staring at a wall.😁That's what a routine is: a mix of what you have to do and what you want to do.🙂

Yeah, when it comes to sports, my "friends" were always just a distraction.
Personally, I can't stand ball sports. 😳 Some people live for them, or a few of us would try to get together and work out, but they'd just get in the way with their constant interruptions—and even then, we’d barely get anything done, or at least not the way I pictured it.
I guess you don't really need anyone else when you're doing stuff you actually, truly love...
I agree with what Jerry Martinez5 said; there are a million different ways to break up the monotony.
But life is just one big routine, no matter how you look at it. That's what gets to me, too, but I suppose it's just 🤷

crimsonviper88 said:Maybe I didn't explain myself well... It's not that I want to wildly break away from society. I don't need to be the "star," and I definitely don't want to be like Bernie Sanders 😁
The parts I bolded—that's not how I think. I don't have to stand out just to have value. I just want to escape this monotony I've fallen into. I don't want to be like the people around me (just college-home-party once a week—😠damn cookie-cutter lifestyles!
)

Well, that doesn't sound like much of a problem to me🤷. Just find some more high-energy people and enjoy them🙂
But honestly, everything eventually turns into a routine. Even the stuff you actually love becomes a habit after a while. Life is mostly just one long cycle of repetition, I guess.🤷
Even if you were skydiving every single day, eventually, that would start feeling like a routine too.

Tyler Baker6 said:da, but the thing is, it's one of the easiest degrees there is. nobody knows about it, and I basically just copied everything except for three or four subjects, which aren't even that hard. It isn't really about the major, it's the town. I can't stand staying in such a small town and living with my family anymore...

there isn't really such a thing as an easy degree😉 take some pride, I guess😍
I feel pretty terrible and I want to change things... it's been going on for too long, and I don't want to live like this for years. I know everyone has their own struggles, but people who feel like me know exactly what I mean.

yeah, but you need courage to make changes (not using the simple word)😍 and the strength to deal with the consequences of your choices, good or bad😉
Why did you even enroll in a college in a city you hate if you actually had the money to leave? 🤷
Talk to your family and tell them how you feel. You don't have to live like this forever; you've only got two years until freshman year starts, then you could transfer. 🤷
Well, you've got finals coming up now, so dropping out before you finish anything probably isn't the best move. 🙂

Michael Cruz3 said:There are many of us who feel this way. For me, this struggle has persisted for four years now—my entire high school career. Now, as I prepare to enroll in college, I find myself redefining who I am all over again. I cannot even count how many times over these last four years I have had to start from scratch. I feel as though I am finally nearing a breakthrough. While I used to only tweak small details, I have decided to overhaul everything. I distanced myself from social circles that were suffocating me, and I began to speak openly about my emotions. I have always been the type of person to bottle everything up, staying silent until I eventually explode or completely withdraw into myself. Not long ago, I ended up in a physical altercation with my sister for no apparent reason. It was simply a sudden release of everything I had been accumulating inside me for years. I had been harboring so much anger, bitterness, and discontent. She provoked me, and we fought. It wasn't an ideal way to handle things, but it allowed me to let go of all those years of tension. Now, I am left trying to cultivate the good things—the positive emotions and the sense of love that never felt natural to me before. My grandmother nearly had a heart attack when I told her I loved her. I had never told anyone I loved them, but now I am telling my family. It took me far too long to get here.
I never sought professional therapy; instead, I relied on medication, taking more than I should have without a doctor's supervision, which meant they never truly helped me the way they were intended.

Just start over. When you fall, pick yourself up and try again; change everything that prevents you from finding peace, and always strive to be happy yourself, because when you find your own happiness, those around you will feel it too.
🙂

you can't change everything in life, unfortunately😳 maybe you can change some things, but not all of them. 😉

What's up with them? I guess.🙄

So, I guess the question is... are they even normal? 🤷 Nah. 😕🙄
silentpilot6 said:I understand... but what does that have to do with anything? Would you personally choose to be with someone struggling with alcoholism or addiction?

Right, because you'd just spot an alcoholic or a junkie instantly, I guess.😉
You've got some kind of radar.😁

And what about smokers?🤷 That's an addiction too, I suppose.😁
Or adrenaline junkies, sex addicts, chocolate lovers...😉
Masochists, sadists...🤷
Gold diggers...
Women who don't want kids...😲
Brandon Brooks11 said:Yeah, I feel you. 🙂 Photography is the one thing keeping me sane right now. I’m definitely not a pro or anything, but it helps me deal with stuff. Otherwise, it’s just constant guilt, needing everyone to validate my every move, and those dark thoughts... At least my hypochondria finally backed off. 😁

well at least you have a hobby
nothing really interests me, I guess🙄

wiredlynx33 said:You’re all essentially living in a bubble because you’re only nineteen; you haven't actually been tested by life yet, and frankly, the real hardships are just waiting in the wings to hit you. I truly don't understand why there is such an overwhelming sense of "depression" everywhere. You aren't starving, you aren't lacking the essentials, and on top of that, you still have people looking out for you. Just take it slow; as the years crawl by, you'll eventually grasp the reality of things and realize how much you didn't know. In short, this phase is purely temporary.

anxiety doesn't just stop after 19, I guess🤷
😢

wiredlynx33 said:Perhaps if you would just take a moment to survey your surroundings, you might actually realize how incredibly fortunate you truly are. Find yourself a partner—someone to share the weight of this life with—and I guarantee you’ll find that sense of well-being starts to creep back in. Try contributing something meaningful to your community instead of just existing on the sidelines; it does wonders for the soul. For heaven's sake, stop staring at your shoes and pull your head up, you miserable wretch! 😉

great advice, just find a girlfriend😁
clearly you haven't been paying attention to how people in the US are struggling because of that😛
makes it sound like finding a girl is the only solution😛

@ pokretacu, if it's just a phase, you can always change things up, you're only 19😉
Sure, if it's hereditary you might have a better shot, but that's about it. 😁

🙄
I guess looking for something that doesn't exist is just discrimination.

You’ve got higher odds for cancer if it runs in the family, or blood clots, heart issues, obesity, diabetes... 🙄

Look, you're entitled to your opinion, and you're definitely entitled to avoid anyone you think isn't a match, but... you can't predict everything. You can't control it all.

Sometimes two perfectly healthy people have a child born with an illness, and then you're left wondering whose fault it even was. 😕
Paul Campbell3 said:If I had a choice, I wouldn't be with someone when I know they're dealing with a disease like that.

Honestly, that kind of thing just isn't an attraction for me. Even people with much smaller issues—like anxiety or depression—don't really do it for me 😁 . As soon as I saw the first red flags, I’d shut down. Period.

Now, if we're talking about someone who has a family history of it but isn't showing any symptoms themselves? I don't know. I honestly don't have an answer for that one.

As a friend, though? No issue either way.👍

this hits different since depression is probably going to be the biggest issue of the 21st century😁
So, what happens when someone you actually care about gets sick? 🤷

Everyone’s entitled to their opinion, I guess, but I highly doubt most of you could even tell if someone was dealing with depression and taking meds, or struggling with anxiety or panic attacks (even if they just say it's asthma or allergies). 😁

And if someone is living with schizophrenia and on medication, how are you even supposed to notice that right away? 😉
Since I was a kid, I’ve always had this habit of heading back home just to double-check that the doors were actually locked. 😁 I’d be halfway 😉

I don't really do that anymore, but I used to spend forever obsessively checking if I’d done something right or if I’d forgotten something, making lists and stuff. 🤣
Linda Taylor11 said:That's exactly the point. Not everyone is ready to dump that much love and energy into someone, and honestly, it just doesn't fit the lifestyle some people want to live.

I suppose most people are more about taking than giving, anyway.😁
silentpilot6 said:Honestly, I've pointed this out several times before: 😁 there is a massive difference between knowing what's coming and being left in the dark...

I guess nobody really knows anything for sure 😁 unless you're Milan Vidov 😛
You just said someone in the family has SCH 🤷 But having a condition and actually living with someone who has it are two different things 🙂 I've got diabetes myself, so I know what it's like firsthand 😁
redharbor9 said:If they're dealing with scleroderma—I'd have zero issues 😍

And about schizo... if we're looking at how common these things actually are (like, schizo is only around 1% of the population), everyone would be on their own if we just played the odds. Doesn't matter if it's environmental or genetic...

That's just how it goes, silentpilot6.

As far as I know, for a gene to actually "kick in," you need both the genetic predisposition and the right environment.😉😁

But, silentpilot6, you didn't answer me. Does nobody in your family deal with depression, anxiety, panic attacks, or OCD?😛 Nothing?😕 Not even anything undiagnosed?😛
So, you aren't anxious, depressed, or dealing with OCD 😉

No diagnosis at all, even though undiagnosed 😁
I guess it’s pretty hard to stay sane in this day and age without being anxious, depressed, or having panic attacks. Good for you, I suppose 👍
So, she doesn't actually have schizophrenia, there's just a chance she could develop it down the line 😁

I guess that means people with anxiety, depression, or panic disorders are off the table, right? 😉

And your family is apparently genetically perfect, free from any possible illness. 🤷 You're just 100% certain there's nothing "bad" hiding in your DNA. 😁
Feeling like a total failure in Psychology ·
man, you might get her to go 😛
but, I guess they'd only bite if one person pays and there's no special program included 😛
I guess it’s even more pathetic when kids rush into marriage just because they finished school. They don't have anything better to do with their lives, and society expects them to settle down, so they do it regardless of whether it's a good idea 🙄. Then they have kids just to look like they’ve actually achieved some kind of adult status 😁 and, predictably, they end up divorced a few years later.
