Nicholas King said:Look, let's get one thing straight: PDF has absolutely nothing to do with Word. It wasn't even built that way. The whole point of the format was to be its own thing, you know? Just existing on its own terms. PDF. That's all anyone ever talks about anymore. Why does everything have to be a PDF? You try to open a simple document and suddenly you need half a dozen different readers just to see what's on the page. It’s a headache. Honestly, why can't we just go back to when things actually worked without all this extra bloat? Just a thought.I mean, yeah... you want to make sure the content doesn't break just because someone's running different software, right? You save it as a PDF so people can actually open it without a headache. Just pop it into Adobe Reader or Foxit Reader and call it a day. Simple as that.

I mean, honestly? It’s pretty much the gold standard now for swapping files like the one you just sent over. Just how things are done.

Just grab it. Seriously. CutePDFJust install it, alright? It’ll show up right there in your printer list. Then, from within Word, you just hit "print"—but instead of sending it to a physical machine, you're basically just dumping it into a PDF file. When the prompt pops up asking what you want to call it, just type in a name, and boom, there's your PDF. Easy enough, right?

Wait, I didn't catch that... were you actually suggesting I switch over to PDF? My bad. I've got Foxit Reader sitting on my hard drive right now—can I just use that to convert the thing into a PDF or what?
Nicholas King said:Man. Honestly, two "mans" here.

Man number one: I don't even know what your field is or where you're trying to land a job, but you seriously have to know what a PDF is, how to make one, and how to open one. Without that, you can't exactly claim you're computer literate on your own Resume.

Man number two: You aren't familiar with text programs? Well, get familiar. Unless you're some absolute superstar in your industry—in which case you wouldn't be writing applications, you'd just be picking through a mountain of offers—you aren't really in a position to just shrug your shoulders, say "I don't really know how," and expect anyone to give you a pass.

that's why I'm asking what I don't know, and I appreciate any help
I haven't needed those programs until now so I haven't used them, and I won't even be working with those programs, I'm just sending my application via email, so I'm asking what format I need so I can read it

do you happen to know if I can't save it as a .doc
driftingnomad68 said:Go to File, then Save as, and pick either the Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc) or a PDF

You can actually set it up so Microsoft Office always defaults to that older format—you know, the 97-2003 one—by heading into File, then Options, and hitting Save. Just a little trick to save some clicks.

Aha, found it. So if I save it as a Word 97-2003 (.doc)

I’m guessing the newer versions like Word 2007 or 2010 can still open that? Or is it strictly just for the old school 97 and 2003 versions?

The thing is, even when I try saving it that way, it keeps reverting back to a .docx format. What gives?
figured as much 😁

"we" always end up with the latest software because we aren't actually paying for it, whereas some big corporation is gonna buy it once and then just sit on it until the next version drops 🙂

so, what format should I be saving this as? A PDF or whatever? Just want to make sure anyone can open it in any version of Microsoft Word without it looking like total garbage (since everything moved to .docx back in the day)

also, how do you actually change the file format in Microsoft Word or one of those other Microsoft Office programs? I'm pretty clueless when it comes to text editors
Nicholas King said:Should work fine in 2007, but for 2003? Depends on if they've got that extra converter thing installed. My two cents: just stick to PDF. It's way easier. 🙂

The format is DOCX (.docx)

Hopefully the folks at this firm I'm sending it to have a newer version of Office installed... fingers crossed. 😁
So, I'm stuck grinding away at my resume and cover letter in Word 2010

Do you think anyone can actually open this stuff if they're still stuck using Word 2007 or even Word 2003?

I can't remember if there's a specific shortcut or whatever, but if you dig through the settings, you can just toggle the option to have it loop automatically.😉

I’ve been messing around with some software lately, honestly that's the best way to actually get the hang of it 😉

but you can't just master everything overnight, right? Just play around with the settings for a bit 👍
driftingnomad68 said:If you just want to move a grocery list for some lasagna over to Word, you could try this tool:
http://www.investintech.com/prod_a2d.htm

Sure, you can mess around with it if you're bored, but don't expect any of these programs to give you a perfect, pixel-for-pixel replica. They always end up screwing something up during the conversion process.

alright thanks
driftingnomad68 said:Nah, especially if you're dealing with a scan. You'd need something like Photoshop to even touch that.

if I can find a way to flip that PDF into a format that isn't a total nightmare to edit, I'm just gonna print it out again anyway😉
Can I use some kind of Office program to edit text that's stuck in a PDF?
I've got these scanned invoices I need to tweak (don't ask me why)

Michael Campbell3 said:I've got Windows XP running on my desktop, but my laptop is stuck with Vista. Honestly? Vista is a total letdown. It’s been nothing but headaches. I'm trying to figure out if Windows 7 is actually any better than Vista. My biggest gripe is the video codecs—on Vista, I can never get all the formats to work right, whether it's an old-school AVI or some MKV file. Plus, software like Subtitle Workshop just acts up constantly. On my XP machine, everything works fine, so now I'm wondering... should I bite the bullet and install Windows 7? Or am I just inviting the same Vista-style nightmares back into my life?

just install Windows 7 😉

Is a 40 GB system partition enough?
I usually dump all my programs onto the system partition—just keeping games off it—while all my media, you know, music, movies, docs, goes on other drives.

Right now, my Program Files folder isn't even hitting 2 GB.

Yeah, it's plenty.

PocketDivxEncoder (takes about 15-45 mins to burn everything in)

AVIAddXSubs (quick one, maybe 3 mins)

Format Factory (you're looking at 30-50 mins)

Auto Gordian Knot (this one drags... 60-90 mins if you're lucky

Avi Recompresor (about 45 mins I guess)

just mess around with them and see which one doesn't drive you crazy 👍
they're all free, so what have you got to lose?

I was thinking about grabbing another 4 GB, but if he can't even make use of what's already there, why bother throwing money down the drain? Not worth it. This should hold me over for now, but in a year or two? Yeah, it'll definitely be tight.

you're just flushing cash away, man. 4GB is plenty.😉
