William Bennett53 said:It was a few minutes at first, now it’s just seconds... I'll probably end up getting a penalty before I can even finish typing this.
In reality, it was closer to three minutes.
And honestly, the only "edit" that would have helped that post was just deleting it entirely.

Plus, looking at it now, this whole thread is basically just one big complaint about getting flagged.

Three minutes Look, everything's been said. It was just one single sentence that I was planning to edit (well, delete).

William Bennett53 said:I have to disagree... if you want to fix up a post before it goes live, just edit it first and then hit publish. And like I said, if you were planning on editing it, deleting it, or just changing your mind, you could have done that before getting flagged. The fact that you got flagged proves someone actually saw it.

Plus, strictly speaking, my warning was on the same page about 4 or 5 posts back, and you already made another post after that warning went up.
Look, I get it—we’re focusing way too much on your specific situation right now, even though your idea is trying to move past that. That's fine. But personally, I don't think your current arguments are strong enough to push through the idea of letting people edit posts until the timer runs out.

My suggestion is either to shorten the editing window or give users a few minutes to make adjustments. I got this strike within seconds. Honestly, I doubt anyone even read it; there wasn't even a quote response.
Technically, I could end up getting a strike every single time before I even get a chance to clean up a post.
It actually happened to me once on a politics thread. I sent a DM to the moderator explaining the post was basically a typo, and they cleared it because it had only been a few seconds. The whole thing happened in under a minute.
rustydrifter10, please, I'd love to hear what you think. It's just really frustrating to get slapped with a strike within seconds of posting.

William Bennett53 said:Look, you mentioned earlier that you don't take this personally, which reminded me of that warning you got here...
If you're talking about the warning I gave you, you kept pushing an argument two hours after I posted the notice. You had plenty of time to see the warning, process it, and just choose not to reply. That was the move. Instead, you posted something that was basically just a continuation of the banned thread. No amount of editing fixes that—it wasn't a case of you accidentally slipping up mid-sentence; you intentionally kept the momentum going.

We all know what's happening with the server, but server issues are a reason to keep the edit window as it is, not a reason to shorten it. Plus, nobody is actually addressing the issue of stopping the trolling or insults. The fact that someone managed to get a warning issued right as a post went up proves that someone already read it, meaning the idea had already spread (whether they quoted it or not).

Look, I’m not sweating the warning itself. What bothers me is how the whole thing went down in literally sixty seconds. That's what bugs me. You can tell from my last sentence I was going to edit the post, but honestly, I could have just deleted the whole thing, which is exactly what I ended up doing. Also, your warning was on the previous page. When you're typing on a phone and the server is acting up, it's impossible to catch everything. You look at the posts on the last page and reply to the most recent one, all while praying to God that the post even goes through. You write half, then finish the other half in an edit once you've cleaned up any trolling bits.
BTW, calling it a "personal attack" isn't really fair either, especially since people constantly try to deflect by pointing out how to report a post instead. Everyone does it.

William Bennett53 said:I didn't even realize it was an attack on me... 🤷

Private message links don't work here... you have to copy and paste if you want to show something.

But there's still a hole in your logic—just because someone quoted a post doesn't mean nobody saw it. In fact, since users are always told not to feed the trolls, a lot of people who see the whole thing won't quote it just to avoid sparking a massive flame war. I honestly think a better solution would be to not publish half-finished posts. I don't get why you think a post with an unfinished sentence is obviously still being edited. Why not just finish it before hitting post?

It all happened within a single minute. Everything went down in that tiny window of time. 🙂
Writing on my phone always leads to typos. That’s why I’m constantly editing. The screen is just too small for me. Yesterday, I had a nightmare with the site. I’ll finish a post, see something looks off, and then try to fix it. I really should be using a desktop or a laptop all the time, but that’s just not realistic for me.

Thank you rustydrifter10. I totally agree with what was said.

My 2 cents. Maybe red Rock isn't because of political views, but just because of the color of the card he handed out?

Because if we’re splitting this thread into two camps, Rock definitely can't be the "red" one. He's on the side supporting the new Ukrainian government. And plenty of people on that side accuse Russia of trying to revive the USSR.
So, if anyone needs to be the "red" one, it's me (though I'm not).

Just change the title of this thread, whatever. God knows.

As for the moderators, they are human beings. But a certain number of participants feel like the moderation isn't always impartial. It's just human nature—when you're fired up about a topic, you tend to spot every mistake your opponent makes while ignoring them when your own side does it. We might be wrong, but this is a subforum specifically for discussing this topic.

I already mentioned that I think it would be best if Rock shared his opinions on the thread without actually moderating it. It's a case of the few against the many.

PS: Yeah, where is Powerlock? He was born to moderate this thread.
@granitefalcon26
It's because you're being subjective. Now you're claiming I'm defending Rock just because we're on the same side regarding the Ukraine thread. Big deal. Out of a hundred threads, we've ended up on the same one once.
You could say that about any moderator. One side will always feel like the moderator is handing out cards only to the opposing side. That's just subjectivity and it's completely inaccurate. If someone uses ad hominem arguments, they get a card for that, not because of which "side" they are on like you think.
If you think someone is trolling or being insulting, just click the little icon and report it.
That's crazy
All the Best,
Reddit
The bolded part shows an unfinished sentence. This happens to me all the time when I'm on my phone—I'll hit send, but the message won't go through because of a connection error with the server. Then I have to rewrite the whole thing. Because of that, sometimes I'll end up sending half a post, then immediately edit it to send the full version.

But hey, you could just post the actual moderator warning itself—you know, the one you got when you were flagged.

Also, in my opinion, the whole debate about shortening the edit window is way bigger and more important than this specific issue you're dealing with. I’d love to see it cut down to, say, thirty minutes so people don't use late edits to mess up entire threads. However, I personally couldn't stand it if they added a rule saying posts shouldn't be punished until the edit timer runs out. If that happened, I'm certain people would spend the heat of an argument trolling their opponents, only to delete insults after 29 minutes. And honestly, that just shouldn't fly. There's a huge difference between editing to fix a typo, adding a link, or refining a thought, and actually being offensive. For violations like that, I think it's better to leave things as they are so users still have to watch what they say, even during an internet flame war.

Maybe we could introduce a rule where a post gets penalized if someone quotes it. That would basically mean enough people on the forum actually saw it.😉
Here is that controversial post that got flagged. It was actually mid-edit at the time. You can tell by the unfinished last sentence. Nobody had quoted it yet, and it had only been a couple of minutes.
http://www.reddit.com/private.php?do=showpm&pmid=24625218
That's the gist of it. Basically, if a post hasn't been quoted, it isn't hate speech or harassment (which are the big offenses)—it's just a post in the middle of being edited. Why get flagged immediately?
Dorian Gray, please don't take this as an attack on you as a moderator .😉I knew this kind of thing was bound to happen eventually.
Suggestion for the admins in Feedback & Suggestions ·
So, I actually ended up getting flagged for this. My post wasn't even finished yet—I was just in the middle of editing it. It would have only taken a few more minutes. Plus, nobody had even replied to me yet.
Since the post got nuked, all I can really do is drop a link to the private message. (Yeah, yeah, I know, even that’s technically against the rules.)

Hey admins, could we please look into shortening the edit window for posts? Right now, it’s set to 90 minutes.
It’s honestly getting a bit frustrating because I’ve already picked up two red cards and a yellow one just while trying to fix my own posts. One moderator told me I shouldn't be complaining about waiting out those 90 minutes, even though in my case, I only needed an extra minute or two to clean things up.
My suggestion is to reduce that edit timer, but instead of handing out cards immediately during that window, wait until the time actually expires before taking action.
I’m actually at risk of getting another card from some eagle-eyed moderator right now because I posted three times in a row in the politics section. I want to merge them all into one single post, but I can't do it instantly—I need just a few minutes to get it right. That's why I'm asking you to please consider this idea.

This forum is a joke. 😉

Look, it's pretty simple. Rocky made it crystal clear in all caps: you're breaking the forum rules. If you drop a link, you have to explain what it is. We don't all have nothing better to do than click every single link just to watch a clip or read some random article.☕

Zachary Torres81 said:I think you might have me confused with someone else. I’m trying my best here, but I don't recall ever saying I wanted Rocky cloned, nor do I think I'm a clone myself.
If I am one, I definitely need to have a long talk with my parents...
I really don't feel angry, and if my posts make it seem like I'm just grumbling, then there's clearly been a misunderstanding. Being grumpy or biased isn't my intention at all.🙂

Regarding the part of my post you quoted:

For example:

Imagine I'm a referee in a football game. My favorite team is playing against a team I'm not particularly fond of. Even though I want to be fair, I'm not sure I could stay completely unbiased. In that case, I'd let someone else officiate so I could just sit in the stands and enjoy the game.

That’s what I would do, but that doesn't mean everyone else has to handle things the same way.😉

In other words, saying a moderator shouldn't participate in forum discussions at all is just nonsense. ☕
Moderators jump into discussions on all sorts of topics and subforums.
This whole uproar over Rocky could easily turn into an outcry against another moderator tomorrow. The moderators in the politics section also join debates, but they only flag posts that break the subforum rules. It has nothing to do with their personal opinions on the subject matter.
Red Rocky in Feedback & Suggestions ·
I’d just like to ask the admins to please change the thread title. Everyone is entitled to their own political views—that’s a personal matter. I’ve been on this forum for a long time, but I’ve never seen people attacking or insulting a moderator as much as they are targeting Rocky. Whether Rocky leans red, green, or yellow, that’s his right, just like anyone else here.
The current title just doesn't sit right with me.
As for moderation, it’s honestly unrealistic to expect everyone to be happy all the time. We can't expect moderators to be glued to the screen 24/7, reading every single stupid thing we post while maintaining a perfect stomach for it. Rocky just started moderating Rock World. By the way, does anyone know where powerlock went??
When you start a new job in the US, you usually get a three-month probationary period to find your footing. Why shouldn't Rocky have that same basic right? Those first three months would give us all a chance to get used to having him moderate Rock World. Objectively speaking, moderators are human beings, not machines. What one moderator sees as trolling or an insult, another might not see that way at all.
Red Rocky in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Oh, sure. I guess we should just disqualify anyone who doesn't see eye to eye with you. Everyone knows exactly what "hate speech" means, right? Honestly, the warning and the points were totally justified.
I’ve been handed a warning before too, so trust me, I’m not here to whine about it. I’ll always stand up for everyone's right to speak their mind. goldenowl73 has that same right as you or me. And look, goldenowl73 isn't the only moderator jumping into these debates—most of the mod team does the same thing.
You can call Collins names, call me a fascist, and think you’re getting away with it. You aren't.☕
Nobody on goldenowl73's team got a warning without earning it.
It seems like your whole goal is just to create anarchy on this forum so you can insult people without any consequences. That's not going to work.☕
Red Rocky in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Jamie Barrett7 said:You’re easily the biggest troll in this Ukraine thread. I'm typing this on my phone, so I can't link your specific posts, but trust me—your stuff gets reported a billion times. Yet, I've never once seen you get a warning because you always share the exact same opinion as goldenowl73. You two just troll together without getting caught.
So, you're totally fine with it when someone calls you a fascist, but the second we point out how the mods are trolling or selectively deleting posts, suddenly we're the ones in trouble.🤣

That's incorrect. I actually got a warning too.
By the way, there's no comparison between your insults, your constant belittling, and your attempts to discredit people (calling them names) versus anything else. Honestly, the title of this thread tells you everything you need to know about you guys (red goldenowl73). You insult the moderators and try to disqualify everyone.
It doesn't surprise us at all, though—that's just your whole modus operandi.

Zachary Torres81 said:I’m with you on this.
goldenowl73, look, there's nothing wrong with you joining the debate, but it would be fair if you stepped back from moderating since you're clearly biased on this topic.

A moderator is entitled to an opinion just like any other user here. As for the moderation itself, I haven't seen goldenowl73 handing out warnings to people who don't deserve them. You guys really need to get it together and realize that ad hominem attacks aren't actual arguments—that kind of stuff gets flagged on every forum out there, including this one.
Please stop the insults and the personal attacks against our colleague Michael Collins.
If anyone actually has grounds to complain about how things are being run, it's me, because your crew called me a Nazi. That's exactly why I had to start a separate thread in this PDF world.
Stop whining and try to take Michael Collins, myself, and the rest of the users on with actual, solid arguments instead.
We’d really appreciate it if you could do that without all the yelling, the insults, and the cheap shots.☕

redheron30 said:This guy goldenowl73 won't even talk about Ukraine—it’s honestly embarrassing. He just selectively uses cardboard tactics and deletes any posts he doesn't like. It's pretty obvious he’s dealing with a bit of a Russian complex.

How many times do I have to say this? It's totally unprofessional to jump into a debate as a biased participant while also acting as the moderator. It's just a simple matter of explaining a conflict of interest. A moderator needs to stay neutral and balance both sides.

Honestly, it's a total comedy.

I've been following the thread on Ukraine, and I really don't see it your way. Everyone just gathered here to throw around ad hominem attacks. Since you lack actual arguments, you come over here to whine instead. At the end of the day, the moderator is a human being with his own opinions, just like any other user on this forum.
No Rhodes, no leap. If you want to fight, do it right in the main thread. Disprove goldenowl73 with real facts rather than coming here to complain and ask for help. You guys are acting like children in a preschool.🙄

They might spend a few seasons in jail or deal with some probation, but you can bet your life they'll be right back at it doing the exact same thing once they're out.

The constant trolling about male discrimination in America in Feedback & Suggestions ·
If you ask me, we really ought to split these topics up:
1. Violence and discrimination against women
2. Violence and discrimination against men.
The mods have plenty of tools at their disposal and should be stepping in to penalize any trolling. Honestly, if a comment has nothing to do with the actual topic, it's just trolling.

Charles Fox10 said:This is just an explanation from page 36 of the thread from back when everything merged, and honestly, I don’t have anything better to add to what was already written then.

This is easily the fifth time we've hit a wall regarding gender discrimination on this forum. Every single time, without fail, these discussions just bleed into one another until they become a massive, tangled mess. I’m curious—are the moderators open to any suggestions on how we can host two separate threads without them inevitably merging into one giant debate after about ten posts?

Despite everything we've thrown at it, we just haven't been able to pull it off yet.

The headline isn't even my biggest concern. I also mentioned in the thread that I just threw the title together quickly. Honestly, I don't mind changing it at all if anyone has a better idea. So far, though, the suggestion box is looking pretty empty!

I’m not really feeling this thread title. It kind of implies that women are the only ones being victimized and that violence only ever happens to them.
There are two distinct ways people experience violence and abuse:
Physical stuff.
Psychological.
Men face psychological abuse from women on a daily basis, and honestly, believe me when I say it can actually feel way worse than physical abuse.
