stormywolf39 said:Honestly, for that kind of budget, you're better off hunting down this one: http://www.nabava.net/monitori__90/l...lcd-22__604561 It shows up at 4:10, but just a heads up, it isn't Full HD—it's 1680x1050. It does have an IPS panel though, which provides a much better picture quality, closer to what you were used to with those old CRT monitors. At this price point, finding a display with truly high-end image quality is pretty tough, but this is one of those rare exceptions. Generally speaking, you should be looking specifically for monitors with IPS or PVA panels; you can usually spot them immediately by their 178-degree viewing angles. They still tend to command a premium over the standard TN panels, even if that price gap has narrowed a bit lately.

A few other models worth checking out:

Thanks. I didn't realize $500 was the absolute ceiling; it just seemed like there wasn't much point in going bigger since screen size isn't my priority. Plus, I don't really have the desk space for it anyway—my setup is limited by width rather than depth—and everything else seemed pretty much the same.
I’d probably go back to a high-quality CRT in a heartbeat if I could find a decent 19" model sitting on a shelf somewhere.🙂
So, what actually matters when I'm shopping for an LCD? Why are 4:3 aspect ratios sometimes more expensive than 16:9 or 16:10, and why is refresh rate supposedly not that big of a deal?🤷 Doesn't the screen flicker and strain your eyes if it drops below 72Hz?🤷
Well, my monitor finally gave up the ghost after nearly a decade of service and god knows how many thousands of hours of uptime. To be fair, it hasn't completely died yet, but the colors and tones are starting to drift and flicker—light green turns into dark green, the brightness shifts and then snaps back, red starts looking purple, and so on. Sometimes if I give it a little tap, things go back to normal, but other times they don't. I was wondering if anyone here knows if this is fixable or if you've dealt with something similar...

Now I'm scouring the web trying to find a decent Best Buy where I can pick up something to carry me through the next decade (maybe I'm being too optimistic🤷), and honestly, I haven't a clue what I'm looking at.🙈
Back in the day, when it came to CRT monitors, I felt like an expert—I knew every manufacturer, the refresh rates, the dot pitch, exactly what to pick and why, blah blah blah...
But now? I'm lost. Aspect ratios have changed, everything seems to be 16:9 these days, and while the refresh rates are way lower than what we used to get from CRTs, apparently that doesn't even matter anymore (not that I understand why)... everything has just shifted. Thank God they still use cables; at least I know how to plug something in.🤣
For instance, you can still find LCDs with that classic 4:3 aspect ratio, but they seem to cost more than the larger 16:9 models😕 with bigger diagonals.
I also see there's this whole category of LED monitors, and the prices look pretty much identical to the LCDs of the same size.
Ultimately, what would you guys recommend, and how good of an LCD/LED display am I going to get for something in the ballpark of $500? Screen size isn't really my priority, actually, I don't care about it at all since I rarely watch movies on my PC. I'd be perfectly fine with a 17" screen, provided the image quality is comparable to what I've been used to on my old CRT (which, mind you, cost me more than entire modern setups including the monitor today).

I've been burned by sharing information before, so now I don't tell her anything. But she follows me around town, calls people over, and digs through my room every single day while I'm out, just looking for leverage.
She won't even let me put a lock on my door because "what do I have to hide from THEM?"
I can manage it, but only to a point...
Next time she's acting "normal," I'm not saying a word to her for the rest of my life. I can't stand these double personalities who act all "sweet" during the holidays just because it's tradition.

The old man is just an old guy; he stays out of it and doesn't do anything. He knows what she's like, but he still plays along with her games.
And yeah, he hides his important documents from her, which proves he knows she isn't sane.

Try to be more subtle about the recording so she doesn't catch on. And please, don't keep all that footage in one spot. Make backups, email them to yourself, cloud storage... just make sure it exists somewhere safe.

Have you tried talking to him? Not by accusing him, but just letting him know how you feel and how much this is weighing on you. Maybe he could try to settle her down, or at least be some kind of emotional support for you. It's possible he's dealing with the same nonsense behind closed doors.
Some older women can be absolute nightmares—I knew one who spent her whole life acting like a "housewife" while her husband provided everything; she just managed the house and the kid (not like it was a heavy workload🙄 ). Now her son is in a serious relationship and getting ready to marry, and she realized she can't manipulate him anymore. Since his partner actually matters to him, she's turned into this bitter woman doing everything in her power to tear them apart😲

But seriously.... those old fossils can be such a massive pain in the ass, everything bugs them, they've got zero tolerance, and they just criticize you constantly... and the best part? Even if you were absolutely perfect, they'd find something about your perfection that annoyed them, but mostly, when they're nitpicking you, they're really just projecting their own insecurities onto you. It’s classic—they take everything they hate about themselves and dump it on someone else. It wouldn't even be a huge deal if it didn't happen every single day, but it’s constant. Like that old saying goes: a person who's unhappy with themselves will find fault in everything and everyone... including the smallest little things.

Just honestly stop giving a damn, that's your best move, because deep down you already know exactly what to do😉

Are you some kind of creep lurking around young women with unstable lives?

Explain the situation to your professors... tell them why you had to leave (don't be afraid to mention you're a victim of domestic abuse) and why you need to work just to cover tuition, food, clothes, and everything else.
You’ll need to say that in case you need them to excuse you from classes—because let’s face it, the credit system here can be a total nightmare when it comes to scheduling.

You should probably also file an application for student housing; it'll make things a hell of a lot easier on your wallet.

You can usually find something through a campus job board.😁

Just finish your degree. For real. And stay true to yourself.
The truth is, you can't get anywhere with just a high school diploma.
I remind myself of that all the time when I feel like slacking off, since I graduated from a high school too.
Who cares what this loudmouth says?
It's obvious she's miserable and can't even stand being alone, let alone living with someone else.

In the future, don't take it to heart when people talk shit about you.

Some people just need a punching bag, and they don't care who they use to vent.👍

It doesn't work quite the way you think it does. I don't know which college major you're pursuing, but at some universities, you can basically coast through, though if you skip lectures—especially labs or practical seminars—you'll definitely fail. You could take a gap year, but that usually comes with its own set of complications.

An application for student housing? And what would she even say? That she needs to live alone? The administration doesn't care about that. The criteria for getting a dorm spot are pretty clear-cut, and "not being able to live with family" isn't one of them, no matter how tragic the situation might be.
Lawrence Allen49 said:Patience, my friend, patience.

On top of that, there's the issue of dealing with someone who isn't even a mental health case—not by modern American standards, anyway. She's just a master manipulator and a total bully. In the end, she could easily spin a narrative to anyone listening, claiming she's the victim of abuse from some unstable girl, which is exactly what she's currently blathering about to everyone in the neighborhood. Would you want that label on yourself? How do you prove you're the victim? With words? That's why the police tell you, "Call us when it's actually happening."

Plus, her husband is home, her mother is there, and the neighbors are watching. If you shove her in jail, you might be opening a whole new Pandora's box, so you have to tread carefully.

And sure, IMD is great. Of course he is. But I don't think posting half-baked solutions online in the heat of the moment is actually enough.😉

Hmm, I wouldn't exactly agree with the bolded comment. Those kinds of manipulators can make life incredibly difficult for their targets, and whether that falls under the umbrella of psychiatry is something worth debating.😉
I personally believe people like that should be exposed without any mercy.

Lawrence Allen49, honestly, after reading through all that, it's clear that woman has completely lost it. She’s practically textbook material for a psychiatric evaluation.😉 And instead of helping, Rebecca Thomas6 is eventually going to end up looking like the problem herself because of this mess.🙄 You can be the kindest soul on earth, but if you take a constant dose of someone playing mind games with you, you’ll lose your patience. You either become totally numb, or you start using the same toxic tactics as a psychotic manipulator just to survive. Or, failing that, you just snap and head straight to the local dive bar to drown it all.😁

I’m fairly certain the grandmother won't say a single word against her own daughter. It’s that classic, spineless, masochistic mentality where people just let themselves be walked over.👎

Rebecca Thomas6, you aren't stupid, so tell me—why do you keep sabotaging yourself by handing over information that this lunatic is just going to weaponize against you later?🤷
Get yourself a digital recorder or just use your phone to capture some audio of these outbursts. It would be even better if you could set up some cheap webcams around the house to record everything, especially if she starts getting physical with the elderly woman.
I'm curious, how does her husband handle all of this?

And it seems like these folks actually know their stuff when it comes to similar situations.

If you're a student, checking out Kempo over at SUBOS with Dinko Batur is an excellent move😉, who holds several black belts (Shorinji Kempo, which is very similar to karate, Kenjutsu, Wado-Ryu karate, and Ju-Jutsu). Living with Tourette's syndrome in Health ·
Angela Wright said:There’s actually a massive distinction between a disorder and a disease, and I think it’s something that should always be clearly emphasized. Honestly, the people who are on the front lines dealing with a diagnosis directly should be the ones leading the charge in educating the public—and quite often, even the medical staff itself.
In the States, you have the National Organization for Rare Disorders, which also works to advocate for rights and lobby on behalf of people living with Tourette's.
To start an association, you really just need at least three people. It doesn't matter if they carry a diagnosis themselves or not; what matters is that they share the same vision and values.
Everything regarding how to set up an organization can be found here:
On our organization's website, you can find our bylaws and try drafting your own based on them. That’s exactly how we handled it.
Once you eventually establish your own group, you can join the National Organization for Rare Disorders, which serves as an umbrella federation for all the various groups representing the rights of patients with rare diseases or disorders. For instance, my cancer advocacy group is part of that federation specifically because we represent those with rare tumors.

I really want to encourage you two to connect, get to know one another, and perhaps form an association together. Even the "Good Morning America" group was born out of similar connections and shared perspectives from this very forum.
Good luck, and stay brave in fighting for your rights. You can do this!

Could you please walk me through how you see the difference between a "disorder" and a disease in a practical sense? I know that back when I was at NORD, I was practically lynched because I referred to Down syndrome as a disease, and apparently, that isn't how it's supposed to be phrased🤔😕 so I assume the explanation would be similar for Down.
Are all diseases considered disorders, or just some of them? And vice versa—are all disorders diseases, or is it just a subset? Or perhaps there is no connection between the two terms at all.😕
It would be incredibly helpful if you could clarify things by providing a few examples of both "disorders" and diseases.
Thanks.🙂
Ruptured eardrum in Health ·
As far as I can tell, my hearing is still pretty good, but I’m constantly dealing with this crackling sound—kind of like the noise you get when you’re crinkling aluminum foil or snapping a pill blister pack. It happens whenever I yawn, hiccup, or even just burp😁, basically anytime there's a shift in pressure in my middle ear. At first, I was convinced my Eustachian tube was just blocked, which would explain the discomfort and that constant ringing in my ears, but like I mentioned in my other post, the doctor didn't say anything about a rupture. To be honest, he couldn't really answer any of my actual questions either—nothing about next steps, treatment options, what caused this in the first place, or if I should be avoiding loud music or certain sounds... He just handed me a referral to an ENT specialist and called it a day.

Hold on, if you haven't cleaned your ears in two months, what did it actually look like?😕
Personally, if I don't clear them out for a few days, I start growing a "tail."😁
How do you put an end to situations like this... in Psychology ·
silentpilot6 said:http://www.nytimes.com/news/crime-story-article-215167

To summarize... a young man was brutally beaten just because he had an mohawk haircut. They left him unconscious in the street, where he was then struck by a car. He passed away in the hospital 😢

And once again, there will be a thousand excuses made for the idiots who did this. Once again, the attackers will somehow be treated with more leniency than the victim...

What can even be done? 🤷
I realize everything starts with how a child is raised at home—the values parents instill from a young age—but there will always be sociopaths out there who shouldn't even be allowed near children, let alone harm them. So what options are left?
The education system, society as a whole... perhaps sanctions. Harsh and swift ones (though that might be a utopia...)
Regarding the killers of Coco Gauff, practically nothing happened. One individual received a single year in prison... a damn YEAR 😢 👎 for murder.
The others faced nothing... once again, the laws and the system seem to protect juvenile delinquents, and in this specific case, murderers.
What kind of message have we sent?
"Go ahead, beat people up in the streets; nothing will happen to you... even if you kill them." 😢

Implementing maximum legal penalties for violent crimes could help. If the killers of Coco Gauff had been sentenced to the harshest possible punishment, it might serve as a deterrent to others acting similarly. Perhaps then, idiots like those mentioned in the link above would actually stop to think whether beating someone up is worth spending 3, 5, 10, or 15 years behind bars.
Maybe they would hesitate... maybe they would walk away. Maybe they wouldn't be reading about it in the crime news today... regardless, another young life has been lost. 😢

First, I have to admit I'm stunned by the fact that the guy is about 6'3" and nearly 265 lbs (according to the news reports), yet he couldn't even defend himself. He just stood there taking the beating until he lost consciousness. They say he was a gentle, quiet person, but still, it's incredible to me that there wasn't even a minimal survival instinct kicks in 🤷
Second, the sentences given to these cowardly parasites feel like a slap in the face to everyone else who actually follows the rules of the society we live in 🤮

How do we put an end to this? Ultimately, through brutal punishment without a shred of mercy, and if that doesn't work, through swift and efficient removal of such individuals from society. Before that point, though, we need better socialization and more effective work from social services and school psychologists—and we need neighbors, parents, and teachers to stop looking the other way. So much damage is done within families that spend years nurturing a future violent offender by simply tolerating their outbursts.

Brandon Price6 said:So, what exactly is MMA? If you're looking for a breakdown, it basically stands for Mixed Martial Arts. Unlike boxing, where it's just hands, or wrestling, where it's all about the takedown, MMA is a blend of everything. You’ve got striking—think Muay Thai or kickboxing—mixed with grappling techniques like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and wrestling. It’s essentially athletes using whatever tool works best in that moment to win the fight. As for where you can catch the action, you don't have to look too far. In the States, the big names are the UFC, which is usually on ESPN, or Bellator, which often airs on platforms like Paramount+. There are also smaller regional promotions if you want to see the rising stars before they hit the big stage. And yes, absolutely—there are women in the sport. In fact, some of the most technical and intense fights in recent years have featured female fighters. The talent level in the women's divisions is incredibly high, and they have their own championship belts and massive fanbases. It's definitely not just a "men's sport" anymore; the skill gap is closing, and the competition is fierce across the board.

It’s Mixed Martial Arts—you know, the whole ultimate fighting thing...
-> It involves everything from strikes with hands and feet to wrestling in the clinch and grappling on the ground; takedowns, throws, joint locks, and chokes. You don't wear a gi or a kimono.

I’m a bit late to the party on this thread regarding why destroy the topic 'Funny Photos'? Honestly, those massive, multi-megabyte posts filled with nothing but GIFs really get under my skin, which is what drove me to open this discussion. I see this as a way to support our new moderator over in the Jokes section—provided she actually intends to enforce things, specifically the new rule banning those heavy GIFs from the dedicated funny photo threads.

I’m not necessarily calling for a total ban on GIFs, whether we're talking about the Jokes subforum or anywhere else, but I do feel they should have their own dedicated threads. Anyone who ignores that rule should probably get a warning, with the GIF itself being deleted or moved to the right spot.

I’d suggest the supermods and admins take a closer look at the new 'Funny Photos Vol. 2' thread. It’s turned into a complete mess of off-topic chatter, trolling, and spam... and for some reason, maybe because she’s worried about causing a scene😁, the moderator hasn't stepped in to penalize those responsible.

And let’s get one thing straight: CPR isn't some Hollywood magic trick where you do a couple of chest compressions, blow some air into them, and suddenly the patient pops their eyes open, perfectly fine. In reality, CPR often doesn't even work. At the end of the day, manual compressions and rescue breaths aren't really meant to "bring someone back" to life—they're just a desperate attempt to keep a tiny bit of oxygenated blood moving through the system until a paramedic shows up with a defibrillator.

If you grab someone by the throat and squeeze until they stop breathing, you can be pretty damn sure you've sent them straight to the morgue. That’s why this whole thing feels incredibly sketchy to me.

I don't know, I've got a different take on this. If what redharbor9 is saying actually holds water, then maybe we're all just dealing with a bit of an optical illusion. It might just be a matter of perception.
What if she was having a psychotic break? Or maybe she was just struggling against them—trying to hurt herself, whether she meant to or not—and they had to pin her down and hit her with an IV sedative to get things under control? It’s entirely possible someone had a hand on her neck during the chaos, too. If that happened, the whole experience would feel completely different. It looked similar. It’s suffocating.🤷
Look, it doesn't even matter if the staff had good intentions or not—that’s beside the point now. The reality is that you can make anyone feel like they're suffocating if you physically overpower them and hit them with a stronger sedative. It's just how it works.

I'm with you on this. There are ways to curb this kind of criminal behavior, but let's be honest—we live in a total circus where nothing ever changes.

That said, the level of dehumanization you described isn't exactly the norm. Sure, it happens, but seeing it on this scale is rare. These kinds of extreme environments are usually reserved for regimes like Nazi Germany or the USSR. Even back in the days of America, we saw flashes of it, but it wasn't nearly as widespread as what you're talking about.

I think you might be surprised by how much people are actually struggling, but you probably remember those old posts describing "life" inside psychiatric wards. There was one user who went by several different handles over the years, always under the name Dubravka, who dealt with schizophrenia.
