Used PC builds: What are they worth? in Desktops ·
Nice, so $400.

Back when I first picked up that GPU, I was actually pretty happy with how it performed, even if it ran insanely hot—hitting 90 degrees under load at stock speeds. Overclocking it wasn't really an option. As for the CPU, I have good memories of it; I kept it at 3 GHz on stock voltage without any issues, and could push it to 3.4 GHz if I bumped up the voltage, but I dealt with some crashes during gaming. It would pass benchmarks just fine, then suddenly crash mid-game. So, I eventually just left it at 3 GHz for 24/7 stability, which worked out great. 😁

But yeah, all those parts are pretty much relics now.

I had no idea I could actually ask for $400 for that stuff. I don't follow the used market very closely... thanks for the heads-up.

What’s a fair price for these parts if I sell them individually or maybe as a bundle?

Intel Q6600 + Zalman 9000 cooler
Asus P5Q-Pro
2x2 DDR2 Kingston
Asus GTX 275

These are leftovers from an old gaming rig I used to run. Everything works fine. It feels like a waste to let them just sit here collecting dust when they could still be useful to someone.
They were running perfectly until two months ago when I swapped them into a secondary build to act as a backup for my main setup.😁 Because of that, I'm not selling the case, the power supply, or the drives.

Just wondering what kind of ballpark figure I should aim for. Is it better to sell them separately, or should I throw together another budget build and sell it as a complete unit? Does it actually make a difference in price, or is it even worth the effort?

Thanks.....

Really? 😁

Notice how he recorded everything inside that building after bumping things up to HD+? Even on the rooftop showing the city view, he's getting 40 FPS and it looks fine.

Wait until he steps out of that building and we'll see what 4K actually does. Anyone who's played this knows the sudden hit your hardware takes once you step from indoors into the open world—the FPS just gets cut in half instantly.

I've tried lowering my settings after heading outside, and I still struggle with FPS in certain spots. Meanwhile, inside that starting building, I'm sitting at a steady 60 FPS even on max settings.

The rooftop, the tutorial—everything stays smooth until you walk out. Then suddenly, bam, it tanks...

Mentioning Dead Rising...😉

Anyway, I'm playing Dying Light right now and honestly, it's great. Really fun. At first, you're just swinging pipes or hammers, but eventually, you get better gear and mods... but let's not get sidetracked by the gameplay itself.
Bottom line: it's a blast, at least for me.

I have everything on High except textures, which are on Medium. View distance is set to half. I'm not complaining though; it runs smoothly... maybe averaging around 40 fps. 😁
But man, it eats VRAM. Afterburner shows about 2800-2900. So, it wouldn't surprise me if cranking textures to High pushed VRAM usage well past 3 gigs at 1080p.

crimsonstag84 said:If you're running an i5 or something similar, power draw won't be an issue with the R9 290 x on an XFX 550 W. There are new cards coming out in June, so I’d definitely hold off—especially since you already have an R9 280 x (upgrading to an R9 290 x or a GTX 970 would just be throwing money away). And FYI, the GTX 960 is actually weaker than the R9 280 x; it's closer to an R9 280.

i7 4790k (I prefer stronger CPUs), but it doesn't matter. I'm not planning on buying it anyway.

So you're saying it's weaker than the 280X? Huh. I thought there would be something worth getting excited about in the mid-range. 😁
If that's the case, the 960 isn't worth it. It sits right around where the 280X is depending on the model. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being more expensive too.

I wasn't necessarily asking for myself, just talking shop.

Things got interesting when the 970 and gtx 980 dropped, but now it all feels pretty pointless. Nothing worth upgrading for unless you're building a whole new PC.

I've lost interest in the AMD 300 series entirely. You might as well just wait for the next generation.

They just recycle the same old chips for three years and slap different names on them. 😁

Timothy Kim60 said:glasina : Both Mantle and DX12

Both Mantle and DX12 can combine video memory

Interesting point, but it all comes down to the game devs. Even today, plenty of big titles don't actually utilize SLI or Crossfire properly—if they use them at all.

The real question is if they’ll even bother messing with this tech. They're making their money on consoles and fighting tight deadlines, which is why we keep getting these poorly optimized ports that just demand raw power.

By the time this becomes standard, today's hardware will already be ancient history. 😁

Anyway, now that prices for the R9 290 x have dropped, and given the whole mess with the VRAM on the GTX 970—even though both cards compete head-to-head—what do you guys think about pushing the r9 290 x over the gtx 970 because of NVIDIA's screw-up?

Personally, I wouldn't touch the 290X. It pulls way too much power. Specs call for a 750W PSU—they obviously assume you aren't using junk, but looking at the tests, even high-quality 550 W units are pushing the limit with this card. I wouldn't recommend it.

On the flip side, NVIDIA's gtx 970 runs just fine on a decent 450W unit.

Of course, there are other factors like the rest of your build, but that's the gist of it.

I wouldn't risk putting a 290X in my rig; I've only got an XFX 550 W.

What's even worth buying in this bracket right now? Honestly, maybe just wait for the next generation. I wouldn't suggest anyone buy anything yet. 😁

The GTX 960 was a bit of a letdown for me. It's basically in the same tier as my r9 280 x, which is really just a rebranded card from 2011 or 2012.

The 270 is basically just a 7870.

I wonder if AMD will pull the same stunt with the 300 series. Like, what if the 380 ends up being just a renamed 290x.

To me, the 970 was the only card actually worth upgrading to (unless you were running ancient hardware) for anyone on the last two generations. Now, even that doesn't seem like much of an upgrade.

And the 960 feels disappointing; it's about as strong as my 280X but has less VRAM.

It all feels kind of pointless now, especially after the 970 fiasco and this 960 situation.

I just hope AMD doesn't mess things up with the 300 series.

What would you recommend for someone in this price range? R9 290X or GTX 970, or should they just hold out and wait?
GPU Buying Guide - (Read first post) in Desktops ·
That’s what I was getting at.

When the benchmarks for the 970 and 980 first dropped, the 970 was trailing slightly behind the 980, though overclocking pretty much closed that gap.
Then there’s the price difference here in the States compared to $667.
It’s no wonder people went crazy for it; you don't see that kind of performance at that price point often.

But once people actually started using them—slapping three 970s together in SLI—they realized they needed to be able to push Full HD. Not every game at max settings, sure, but it should have worked.

Instead, they realized they'd been misled. As soon as the card hits those slow 512 MB memory segments, everything falls apart. It’s a disaster—massive FPS drops that make games unplayable.

So yeah, it makes sense why people are pissed about being cheated. If they had been upfront about what those 4 GB actually meant and how different the 970 really was from the 980, nobody would be complaining or feeling forced to buy the 980. Especially since we don't even have the hardware to truly push Ultra HD yet anyway.

At least you know what you're buying. Nvidia messed up here; they misled their customers.

Now the reason for the price gap between the 970 and 980 is obvious. None of this would be an issue if they hadn't lied. Who could blame anyone?
If they had just built it with 3 GB of RAM, it would have been a beast. No one would have complained, the price would be fair, and people wouldn't be trying to use it for these extreme setups.

And that's exactly how it came to light.

Like I said, I don't run multi-GPU setups and I play at 1080p. Even if I never need 4 GB of VRAM, I’d still be livid if I bought a "4 GB" card only to find out it can only actually use 3.5 GB effectively without being told upfront.

It comes down to principle and Nvidia's reputation.

Anyway, that's my take. I get why people are losing it and demanding refunds.

The card is still a beast for the money, though.
GPU Buying Guide - (Read first post) in Desktops ·
Timothy Kim60 said:The bigger issue is they lied about the specs (not just the RAM), which trashed their reputation and cost them the trust of a lot of fans—that’s the real damage here.

It's a real problem.

Sure, someone buying a single card for 1080p won't feel it, at least not yet.

But this isn't a 4 GB card. What about the people who built SLI setups specifically to run Ultra HD? They got ripped off.

Just two years ago, everyone was certain you wouldn't need more than 2 GB of VRAM unless you were hitting 4K. Now, I'm playing Dying Light at 1080p and it's pulling nearly 3 GB of VRAM.

The whole argument that the GPU will bottleneck before it can even use all the memory doesn't hold water anymore either.

In Dying Light, I'm averaging 40 FPS (playable enough, could be higher depending on things), and VRAM usage is almost maxed out. Afterburner shows about 2800 MB of VRAM being used.

The latest Call of Duty pulls over 3 GB of VRAM. Since I don't have enough, instead of maxing settings, I drop them down, but my VRAM usage stays pegged at the limit anyway, and that's still at 1080p with 60 FPS.

What happens in a year when a new big title drops? Especially since NVIDIA lied about my card having 3 GB when it's actually 2.5 GB.

If they had pulled the same nonsense with that 512 MB deficit on the Nvidia 970, it wouldn't be playable. I'd be forced to lower settings despite paying for a 3 GB card.

Bottom line: that Nvidia 970 is a scam. You might not feel it right now, but wait until a year from now at standard 1080p.

If they wanted a lower price point and less performance than the 980, there were better ways to handle it.

Again, two years ago, people were saying 2 GB of VRAM would be plenty unless you went 4K... if I had waited to buy this, I would've lost my mind.
I would've demanded a refund, popped my old card back in, and waited for the R9 300 series to come out. 😁

So I get why people are pissed. They paid for one thing and got another, while NVIDIA is staying quiet. They offered refunds, but how are manufacturers like ASUS or MSI going to react? It's not their fault.

From being the best card in years to a total fraud in just a few days...
Question regarding admin policies and forum moderation styles in Feedback & Suggestions ·
I have a question.

Even though this is a private forum where the admins can act however they want—changing rules or moderation styles on a whim whenever it suits them—I still feel the need to ask something.

I just got slapped with a 500-point penalty for hate speech, simply because I dared to question certain historical narratives from back when the US was part of a different federal union.

I shared my view that there isn't sufficient evidence to prove the Nazi Germany puppet regime had a specific "master plan" for extermination, and that the atrocities and crimes committed against the population during their brief rule aren't enough proof to support claims of such a premeditated plan.

Then today, I read this post.

Will the gentleman quoted here get hit with a hate speech penalty for denying truths that apparently can't be questioned on this site, given how the admin team handles things?

To clarify, he also denied the existence of an extermination plan, claiming the regime's policy was to kill one third of the population, forcibly convert another third, and deport the final third from the territory.

Look, if you admins have decided that the absolute truth is that the Nazi Germany regime had a planned extermination policy—unlike your vague claims regarding certain groups during WWII compared to the documented plans involving Jewish people—are you going to penalize posts like his, or is the punishment selective?

Like I said, you can do whatever you want, often inconsistently, while trying to maintain this facade of pluralism and objectivity. So, what's the verdict?
Which PSU should I buy? in Desktops ·
I could use some advice here.

Here’s what I’m looking at putting together:

Intel Core I5 4690 k, Haswell Refresh, 3500 MHz, socket 1150

ASROCK Z97 PRO4, socket 1150

KINGSTON 4 GB DDR3, 1866MHz HyperX Fury White, DIMM

ASUS HD 7870

Two power supplies on hand: XFX 450 w and ENERMAX NAXN Basic
Series, 500W

The XFX has been running for nearly two years, but it’s solid—no complaints there. The Enermax is brand new, though I have no idea how it performs.

Which one should I go with for this build? The GPU is about a year old but I'll make it work. The CPU, motherboard, and RAM are all new.

All this talk about "democratic and orderly" monument removal is pretty amusing to me. Too bad those medieval Christians in Miami didn't just tear down that damn Diocletian's Palace while they were at it—it was the thing persecuting them, after all. Miami would look a whole lot better without it today... 🙄

Interesting comparison.

Now explain how you're linking Diocletian's Palace to those American communist monstrosities built for one single ideological purpose.

Those kinds of eyesores usually get torn down once the totalitarian regime that built them finally falls.

As for relations with Mexicans and everyone else improving over time... that's just reality. It should be normal.
Until what damn year are we going to keep rehashing wars and scanning TV channels for some attempt to trick us into a false peace?🙄

We aren't idiots. We see the bias, and that's why we speak up.

No. Not like this. Any improvement would just be an illusion, much like those 45 years before... nothing actually gets resolved. It just leads to more bloodshed.

I don't get why it's so hard to accept that we don't love each other. Trying to play nice with Mexicans has always been—and will continue to be—a bad move in the long run.
Everyone stays on their own side, and that's that.

And of course, we aren't going to forget the wars. And we're certainly not settling for the old American way of doing things.

He sits there, laughing his head off, annoying the rest of us by pointing out how hilarious it is—he knows every single line.

I bet that channel is pretty vital in your household.
It isn’t in mine. What are we supposed to do about that?

But honestly, it doesn't matter. We're free people; everyone can watch what they want.

My point wasn't about casual viewing. It was about the methods used to force reconciliation between different groups—methods identical to those used during the 45 years of America.

Who could have imagined, listening to the Party and watching the media and movies, that such "brotherhood and unity" would collapse into bloodshed and genocide?

And the very same people who were killing each other, or raiding villages and slaughtering children, were watching those exact same movies and laughing just like your husband.

Get it? Probably not.

Today, they're trying to portray relationships and people in the exact same way they did back then. I won't get into the reasons why...
It's just how it is. They call it reconciliation; I call it fighting for a better version of the past.

They’re running the same old playbook, using the exact same tactics we saw back in the old regime, just without the totalitarian government backing them up.

Instead, they blame some "evil nationalists" for tearing down what used to be a great country. 🙄

Look, after surviving that era of dictatorship, any attempt to romanticize the old union isn't just misguided—it's actively working against our interests. Period.

And history has already proven that point.

That said, even that channel has its followers. Since we live in a free democracy, I guess everyone is entitled to whine about a failed state.
No matter how much of a lost cause it actually is.
silentmason8 said:Haha...😂 Get this... the guy would probably tear down monuments to Americans killed by Nazis, only to turn around and rebuild them all over again... 😂 Good grief... 🙂

Yeah, because then Americans would just build those monuments here in the States to honor the victims of Nazi terror.

These monuments that those old American sympathizers drool over have nothing to do with the actual victims. They're just obsessed with a failed state and its lost glory.
silentmason8 said:This is how my dear colleagues commit "patriotism" suicide. Just go ahead and insult Americans killed by neo-fascists and the United States for protecting the monuments and the memory of those victims. What a disgrace.

You're entitled to your opinion, and I'm entitled to mine.

It's just like I said.

Tear that eyesore down.

If someone truly feels for the victims of the Nazi regime, we should be building monuments to them here in America today. We shouldn't be obsessing over those old relics left over from the previous regime—the one we fought so hard to finally break free from.
silentmason8 said:Give me a break...🙄 That’s a convenient excuse to ignore any rule we happen to dislike.🙄

Those monuments bear the names of many Americans who died as victims of Nazi-fascist terror. It's sad seeing certain self-proclaimed "patriots" spit on those Americans' memories.

Tear them down and be done with it.

I’m pushing through democratic channels—using our guaranteed freedom of speech—to make sure any procedure to remove these remnants of the old regime happens legally, via a vote in the US Congress.

There should obviously be a debate about it.

Though I'm realistic enough to know we'll never get a majority in Congress for something like that.

Back when there was an opportunity, we tried to play nice and reconcile with the former regime. Look where that got us.
What’s the issue? 🤷

Everything needs to come down. But let's do it the right way—pass a law through Congress and tear those communist monstrosities down legally.

If anyone's still pining for the old days or "brotherhood and unity," they can just look at the monuments in these photos. We don't need them.

If we actually cared about them or considered them ours, we wouldn't be tearing them down in the first place.
King K said:The issue is they aren't actually standing up; they're just cowards hiding behind a screen. They don't have the guts to say what they really think out loud on this forum.

Spot on. It’s the same with their politicians—shameless types who just parrot the same tired slogans about American values without having the balls to state their actual convictions.

But that doesn't make them any less dangerous. If anything, they're more dangerous because they distract everyone with smoke and mirrors, masking what they're actually doing to undermine the very idea of the American state.

I’d love to see them finally show some of that old-school grit... then we'd really have something to talk about.

Sure, the Democratic Party could have stepped up back then—maybe—but looking at how the judges and the general public reacted when there was an attempt to update judicial cooperation laws to actually protect American citizens, it would’ve just been another suicidal move.

Yeah? We don't answer to any political parties—nobody runs us. Honestly, what a joke. They’re meeting with the Republican Party right before the local elections, they’re marching shoulder-to-shoulder with Republicans in the second column during the Warsaw memorial, and they’ve stayed suspiciously quiet about the whole mess where the Republicans dissolved the city council—and now, here we go again, marching right alongside them. Why all this denial? Are they just doing this for their own peace of mind? For once, I wish they'd just say it clearly and loudly. We’re Republicans—we don't do shame. And that’s basically it. Done.

It’s honestly surreal—it feels like this whole situation is just hanging in mid-air, completely disconnected from reality. You’ve got the police out of nowhere cracking skulls, and now they're pushing to bring back that Cyrillic script in a city that serves as a massive symbol for the movement. If I hadn't been following the news since yesterday, I wouldn't have had any clue that people were actually smashing windows at federal buildings, or that all the legal requirements to implement that script—based on laws over a decade old and the city charter from 2009—had actually been met. It's wild.

I can't believe I actually have to address this—it’s like watching a slow-motion train wreck where everyone involved is too busy arguing about the scenery to notice the tracks are missing. Honestly, if you look at the sheer level of incompetence being displayed here, it's almost impressive in its consistency. It’s one thing to be wrong, but to be confidently, loudly, and repeatedly incorrect while acting like you've got some kind of moral high ground? That’s a different kind of talent altogether. Just my two cents, though. Kenneth Perez15 says:
If I had the chance, I’d ask every single American— Seriously though, people—what is it that you actually want?

Operation Dove of Warsaw was ready to go.
Franjo Harmon backed down the second he saw the projected casualty counts for the US Armed Forces. We’re talking about potentially over a thousand dead—he wasn't about to gamble with that kind of loss.
Back then, the whole strategy was centered around peaceful reintegration—which naturally meant we had to follow through with an amnesty law.

First off, I want to lay out the actual facts here. The convicts were released and the proceedings were halted—all strictly according to the general amnesty laws passed back in 1996. Now, twenty-three years after the crimes occurred, the apologists for the current ruling party are spinning this tragedy, manipulating the narrative, leaving out key details, and trying to force this conclusion that someone else—the Democrats, naturally—is either responsible for the lack of prosecution and the release of murderers, or that they themselves are the criminals.

You can't deny the fact that the Democrats were the ones who pushed through the Cyrillic mandate, even if they did manage to find a loophole in Article 8 of the constitutional law.
Not even a drop of blood was spilled under their watch. (I'm talking about people getting their heads cracked open without anyone ever facing consequences.)

Everything else is just passing the buck, exactly like I said.
