The death of history? in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Look, when you approach the situation this way, you really can't expect them to just strip the partial away. A partial isn't something with an expiration date; there’s no set deadline for when it has to be removed. In almost every single case—or at least the vast, overwhelming majority of them—the decision on whether to pull it rests solely with the moderators of the specific PDF where the user holds that partial.

Especially since you guys are the ones handing out the penalties.

Look, the mods talk about this stuff pretty regularly; they know their PDFov inside and out—they understand the flow, the structure, the typical user base, and the overall quality of the discussions and the people involved. Like I mentioned before, changes usually happen in small increments, mostly through specific tweaks or fine-tuning what’s already there. Your comments feel incredibly vague and non-specific, almost like you're describing a total meltdown when that's just not the case. Personally, I don't think the forum is in nearly as bad of shape as your posts make it sound, though I definitely recognize there's room for improvement—which is exactly what's being worked on. We can always aim for perfection, but at the end of the day, the forum is constantly evolving.

That really comes down to how different communities operate. Here, we’re focused specifically on this one space. Our current rules are just a reflection of how this forum has evolved over time, and as the community grows and shifts, those rules have to shift right along with it. There might be stretches where things feel pretty stagnant, but looking at the big picture, everything changes significantly over the years. What worked perfectly fine back when there were a fraction of the members and half the activity just doesn't cut it anymore—just like what we have now won't be quite enough for where we're headed in the future. So, we'll keep adjusting things to make sure they stay better for everyone.

neongull93 said:I think what’s written in bold makes total sense, but honestly, we really ought to allow for a little bit of off-topic chatter every now and then. If we don't, you end up killing the natural flow of the conversation and making everything feel way too rigid.

Look, I don't want to be the fun police here, but let's keep things organized. A little bit of off-topic chatter is usually fine by me as long as we don't lose the plot and get back to the main discussion quickly. If someone starts a really great, high-quality side conversation, though, let's not clutter up the main thread—just move that over to its own dedicated topic so everyone can enjoy it without derailing the actual subject at hand!

neongull93 said:Also, could you point me toward the specific thread where all the rules are listed out and where we can track any updates or changes they make?
Look, if it isn't already there, just go ahead and make it—because honestly, I’m not exactly taking your word for it!

Look, we’ve got our main community guidelines pinned right at the very top of the forum, and most of our PDF documents—well, almost all of them—have their own specific internal rules tucked away too, usually set as a pinned top-level thread. Honestly, it's just common courtesy and basic logic to actually sit down and read through those rules before you jump into the conversation. It makes everything run a lot smoother for everyone involved!

neongull93 said:I’m just asking because it seems like whenever someone complains about a ban, they just get handed some random excuse and the ban stays.

Look, if we decide a ban was actually unfair, those bans get overturned. Please don't try to tell me you've "never seen it happen" or that it's "super rare," because:
a) this entire PDF is packed with examples of that happening
b) it actually happens quite a bit, averaging several times a month
c) just because most bans aren't overturned doesn't mean they were deserved. Every single ban comes with an explanation and goes through a full review by moderators, super-mods, and admins.

neongull93 said:The rules need an upgrade, and I honestly don't see why there's even a rule against commenting on the moderators.

The reason you can't go around critiquing moderator actions within individual threads is that we have an entire dedicated PDF for exactly that—which is the very one you started this thread in! Every thread has its purpose, and every PDF has its own specific topic. This one, "Messages, Grievances, and Feedback," is specifically designed to handle moderation issues.

neongull93 said:The real issue with this forum is the moderators themselves, since it feels like they’re resistant to change and won't admit when something isn't working properly.

Seriously, please read the rules in this PDF because this kind of back-and-forth is just a waste of everyone's time. If you have a legitimate issue, lay it out, explain it, and prove it. We do adjust the rules from time to time to fit the current state of the community, so you can't really claim things never change. On the flip side, making constant changes without a good reason makes zero sense—it just confuses users and makes running the forum a nightmare. That said, we are always wide open to constructive suggestions.
Experiment: Voting for moderators in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Look, even if we decided to run a poll like that, the reality is the moderator wouldn't end up being someone the current administration and owner actually want on board. At the end of the day, we can't—and frankly, we don't want to—force our existing staff to work alongside someone they just don't click with or can't agree with when it comes to moderation standards. It’s not just about their comfort, though; it would genuinely hurt the quality of the entire platform. Plus, there's the practical side: moderators need full access to the admin panels and backend tools because that's where all the technical resources and data live that allow them to do their jobs effectively. There is absolutely no way we’re handing those keys over to someone we don't trust or who hasn't proven themselves to be high-caliber, no matter how many votes they might pull in a popularity contest. That would be both unprofessional and, quite honestly, naive. We always circle back to the same point: the community's opinion is treated more like a suggestion than a mandate, and let's be real, we haven't exactly been known for being super receptive to suggestions in the past either.
Moderating off-topic posts in Feedback & Suggestions ·
The general rule here on the forum is that if an off-topic comment is actually high-quality and brings something meaningful to the table, we’ll spin it off into its own dedicated thread. If it’s just noise, though, it stays where it is. Do you have a specific link to one of those discussions you're thinking of? I'd love to see which ones you feel deserved their own separate space.

Where would you even put that PDF? I feel like it would fit perfectly in the "Miscellaneous" folder on the shared drive, wouldn't it?

The moderators over on the PDF subforum where this thread lives are the ones in charge, so you should probably just shoot them a private message to get things sorted out.
Reason for ban is visible to everyone in Feedback & Suggestions ·
If you're dying to know why someone got banned, your best bet is to just hang tight and wait for them to file an appeal with AARP, or maybe just shoot them a DM once they're back online—assuming, of course, it wasn't a permanent ban.

Until now, you could kind of find out through that "Find more posts" thing, but they blocked that menu.

So, I'm asking again—how am I supposed to see why some user got banned?

Look, the reason is visible to the people who actually need to see it: the banned user and the admin team. That's just how the forum settings are hardcoded, and even if we wanted to change it, we can't—it's out of our hands.

Basically, don't break the rules, simple as that! If you stay on topic, stay polite, and try to be constructive, you're really unlikely to run into any trouble. In principle, all you have to do is read through the guidelines, follow them, and pay attention to the flow of the thread you're posting in so you can match the tone and level of debate; honestly, it's just standard internet etiquette that anyone should know.

Previously, you could see their un-deleted posts and the threads they started, but not their specific sanctions—unless you inferred them from one of those posts.

Hate speech in signatures? in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Susan Price30 said:That wasn't actually a sentence from a post; it was just something listed on someone's profile.

My bad, sorry about that! 🙈Still doesn't qualify as hate speech, though.
Hate speech in signatures? in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Look, this isn't hate speech, so there's really no reason to flag it. We actually need a direct link to the specific post itself, not just a link to someone's profile.

If you’re looking to dig into some details about one of our members or a moderator, your best bet is to just reach out to them directly via private message, because we don't hand out that kind of personal info here. 🙂
Appeal for permanent ban from New York City in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Look, everyone, the rules regarding Quincy are exactly the same as they are for any other user on these forums. If he wants his ban lifted, the burden is on him to reach out and actually prove why things would be different this time around. There’s really no point in letting someone back in if they’re just going to fall right back into the same old patterns—and let's be honest, Quincy wasn't just making minor slips; he was being openly disrespectful and repeatedly using private information to provoke people, which is a massive violation. Plus, he’s only been banned for a couple of weeks, and we don't have a policy of lifting bans like this unless at least six months have passed.
How do I access moved threads? in Feedback & Suggestions ·
I've moved this thread over to the Close Politician section. Jose Carter2, if you or the rest of the moderators think this topic actually belongs somewhere else, feel free to move it again!
Douglas Johnson41, I only relocated the discussion because we were dealing with such a massive headache from all those annoying ads we've been seeing lately.
Complaint about terrible moderator bias in Feedback & Suggestions ·
A user can file their own appeal if they want to contest a ban. As for you, you’re free to appeal any sanctions that might be leveled against your account.
Has anyone had a positive experience being a Jehovah's Witness? in Feedback & Suggestions ·
If anyone’s actually feeling frustrated with how things are being moderated around here, please just go ahead and start a new thread following the community guidelines. Until then, I honestly don't see the point in keeping this discussion going, especially since this poll doesn't really make any sense right now.
Banning non-Americans from posting in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Look, there’s absolutely nothing stopping anyone from posting just because they aren't from the US; we welcome everyone here, but if you run into a controversial post, you really need to report it properly. If you don't see any action from the mods after more than twenty-four hours, then feel free to ask about it right here, just make sure you include the direct links. From what I can tell, you opened this thread only a few hours after those posts you quoted were even written.
