The vicious cycle of "bad" food in Hobbies & Leisure ·
wanderingangler43 said:The worst part is when you're stressed out; suddenly, the situation feels way more important than actual food, so you end up polishing off a whole box of cookies or a whole chocolate bar just to cope. But once the "danger" passes, you're just left beating yourself up for losing control and stuffing your face for no reason...
I've been stuck in my chair studying for an exam all day, and let me tell you, it crossed my mind dozens of times to go grab some Hostess snacks to munch on while I hit the books...
But I didn't give in. Instead, I tried a swap—you wouldn't believe it, but I actually ate 10 apples today!! And they were decent-sized ones, too. Plus, with all the constant trips to the bathroom, I guess I'm getting my steps in... 👍 talk about killing two birds with one stone...
When I'm stressed, I feel this constant urge to snack, to just have something in my mouth... and as soon as I bit into that first apple, there was no stopping me; I polished off every single one in the bag.🤣

Also, yesterday I picked up some apple cinnamon cookies (cinnamon is my favorite) and in my rush, I didn't even bother checking the label before leaving the store. I ended up snacking on them all the way home and finished the whole 100g bag. When I finally got home and checked the ingredients, I lost it! It was mostly wheat flour, margarine, and sugar, with only 1% cinnamon and 1% apple fiber!!! I was livid!!! Only 2% actual good stuff in there....😲
Whatever, 500 calories for basically nothing, but oh well....

Studying and sugar is a terrible combo. You'll just end up crashing and falling asleep.

It’s mostly mental; if I give in just once, it turns into this unstoppable cycle where I can't stop eating it. Once I pull through those tough moments, though, it gets easier every day. If I really need a sugar fix, I’ll just have a bit of dark chocolate or whip up a healthy dessert.

I'm in the same boat. I definitely get cravings, but since I eat pretty clean most of the time, I allow myself some treats. Honestly, I actually prefer healthy food anyway—you can make it so delicious with just a little fat. Things like a good burger, pizza, or grilled food don't even tempt me that much compared to the nutritious stuff.

Why is nearly 90% of the stuff at Walmart just unhealthy, highly processed junk that's designed to make us gain weight? And why are we feeding our poor kids this garbage, basically turning them into little junk food addicts before they even hit middle school? But that's a whole different conversation.

What she said above is actually pretty simple to explain. Most people just aren't informed, and honestly, a lot of folks are just willfully ignorant. For many, the idea of actually learning something new—especially about nutrition—is completely out of the question.

I remember when my old neighbor made a comment that her granddaughter might be carrying a bit too much extra weight (the kid was 75 lbs at 7 years old) and suggested maybe she shouldn't be spoiled with so many cookies, and the parents were absolutely livid. Sure, the neighbor probably should have kept her mouth shut, but still. They're setting that child up for a struggle right from the start. 🙄

Dana Miller2 said:Over the last year, I’ve really started focusing on self-improvement, both physically and mentally. I’ve been diving into a lot of books about nutrition, and honestly, the only thing that actually made sense to me was Montignac’s approach to glycemic indices. Biology and chemistry were never exactly my strong suits, so I still struggle to wrap my head around how things like blood glucose levels and insulin actually work. 😵If there’s one thing I’ve managed to figure out from all of this, it's that when we eat "junk" food—stuff like refined sugar, processed grains, or even beer—it triggers a whole chain reaction in our bodies. It hits the bloodstream fast, spikes your insulin, then causes your glucose levels to crash, which just leaves you craving more sugar. You might want to look that up. 😬It’s like being caught in a loop where we just can't help ourselves, constantly craving more and more of those exact same foods.
I’ve actually been testing all of this out on myself over the last few weeks. I've cut out almost all the junk and I'm sticking to whole grains, fish, lean proteins, and plenty of veggies. I also use olive oil for everything, and whenever I get a craving for something sweet, I just grab some fruit or whip up a delicious strawberry smoothie (so good!). I stick to coffee in the mornings and switch to herbal teas in the afternoon.
Things have finally shifted. I’m just not hungry all the time anymore. It used to be that food was constantly on my mind—one minute I’d be obsessing over sweets, then immediately pivoting to salty snacks, and then craving something sour. Any woman who deals with PMS will know exactly what I mean. 🙂).
I still can't quite wrap my head around it. Is it really that straightforward?

Yeah, pretty much. That insulin spike basically just shoves all that extra sugar straight into fat storage, leaving you with a blood sugar crash afterward—so you'll just end up feeling hungry all over again. It’s a cycle that works exactly like that; I've seen it happen to myself, I've seen it happen to you, and it happens to just about everyone.

All of this just raises so many questions—it almost feels like a conspiracy theory. Why are we constantly poisoning ourselves? Why is 90% of the shelves at Walmart packed with nothing but unhealthy, highly processed junk that’s just designed to make us gain weight?

A lot of junk food is actually pretty tasty, affordable, and easy to find. 😉

So, I was wondering if anyone else here has gone through something similar?

I deal with this every single day. If I eat something with a high glycemic index, I feel a massive energy crash and end up hungry again almost immediately. But if I stick to things like oatmeal or some veggies, I stay full for hours and my focus stays sharp. 🤷

Ashley Parker82 said:Is it better to go for a light bike ride before hitting the gym, or should I save the cycling for after my workout?

A light ride beforehand works great as a gentle warm-up. Once you're done with the weights, you can definitely pick up the pace a bit more.

rapidheron7 said:I figured I’d introduce myself and share a little win. I’m based out of San Jose, and lately, I’ve been commuting to New York City by bike. For now, I’m riding a standard mountain bike, but since I work at a specialized bike shop and fitting studio, my boss actually hooked me up with something much more heavy-duty than your average ride. It’s arriving in the next shipment, and honestly, I can hardly wait! 🙂
If I stick to the same route, about 45 minutes is all I need to get a solid workout in. Honestly, over the last couple of weeks, I’ve been feeling so much better—I'm even starting to see some physical changes that are really helping my confidence. 😬
I went through a rough patch where I was pretty much sidelined for about ten months. Since I used to be quite active in sports, I'm definitely not looking like much of an athlete right now, but I'll be back in shape before you know it, haha.
Anyway, I’m really glad to see I’m not alone in thinking this way. The more people we have on the same page, the better! 😍

Nice work. Just watch out for your lungs—all that exhaust, lead, and heavy metal pollution is no joke. It’s pretty sketchy riding at full tilt right next to heavy traffic. 😢

Which bike are you thinking about picking up?
Michael Williams70 said:Still dealing with it. Just like Francis

That’s rough. 😢 It makes me wonder if my doctors were being too casual with my treatment plan here. I really hope I don't have to go through this a third time.
Michael Williams70 said:It sounds like you guys caught a break. I definitely got the short end of the stick. Usually, the younger you are, the faster you bounce back—if I caught this again at my age, it would be a much tougher climb. About twelve years ago, an older gentleman I knew started therapy, and after a month, he barely saw any improvement. It really just comes down to how lucky you get.
The second time it hit me, it was just bad timing. I had the flu, a 102 fever, freezing weather, a cold car, the AC blowing... I was sweating through it all. It struck me mid-day, and since I couldn't just walk away from work, I pushed through. It hit me right in the neck, and honestly, I can still feel the aches there today.

That sounds rough.

The worst part is when you can't even laugh about it because you end up looking ridiculous to yourself. 🙂
Karen Peterson said:Has anyone else dealt with this?
I guess my mind just jumps to all these wild possibilities.🙄

I've got all my prescriptions ready and I start physical therapy tomorrow, but now I'm wondering if I should also look into acupuncture or maybe seeing a holistic healer? 😕

I went through this twice myself—once five years ago and again last year. It started on one side of my face, then moved to the other. I don't have any lasting issues, and they weren't nearly as intense with my case as the guy mentioned above. I went to the ER to see a neurologist, who cleared me of any neurological issues, and then an ENT specialist who said everything looked fine too. They just gave me some B-complex vitamins and some exercises to do, and that was that. Everything cleared up in about three or four days. The first time I did physical therapy, but I skipped it the second time.

I know another guy who had it happen twice, too. It seems like we're just prone to it, even if the odds are low.😁

Oh, this is great info! I had no idea.

I’m struggling with my bike because I can't raise the handlebars, so I can't get the height adjusted to what feels right for me.😢>
Don't just take those measurements at face value, since sizing isn't standardized across the board. Your best bet is to actually test ride the bike.

Well, one of them is about three years old.

For the graphics card, grab a Radeon X1650 ddr3
. You can get a lot for a small amount of money, and you'll even be able to play some games on lower settings. 🙂

I don't really have much time for gaming, so I doubt I'll need that. 🙂

Actually, honestly, I don't care if it's AMD or Intel; I've mostly used AMD in the past, but it doesn't matter. Basically, I want to buy a CPU and motherboard for $300 that I can easily overclock to 3 GHz, and I just want it to run rock-solid without spending extra cash.

Edward Peterson70 said:Older motherboards use AGP slots.
Newer ones don't.
I think your old board uses DDR memory, while newer models use DDR2.
What kind of budget are you looking at for a card?
Do you play any games?
And what kind of power supply are you running?

Yeah, I see what you mean—I'm a bit out of the loop on hardware lately. My power supply is an EVGA SuperNOVA, 350 Watts; I don't really game anymore since I'm a programmer, so I don't need anything flashy or high-end. The cheaper, the better.

Right now I have this one, which I'm selling immediately 🙂, and I'm looking for something from this list

A motherboard with integrated graphics would work too.

wiredmarlin5 said:Oof, my bad, I sent the wrong link...this 😁

Damn, no AGP. Well, looks like even the slightly pricier ones don't have it either. Guess I'll have to pick up a new graphics card too. 😢

Hey guys, can anyone recommend a budget-friendly motherboard that won't give me a headache when trying to overclock a 3 GHz Core 2 duo, E2160?

I'm looking for the absolute cheapest option out there. 🙂

Otherwise, what’s your take on the whole thing?

If that ever happened to me, I definitely wouldn't forget that doctor. Personally, I haven't dealt with anything like that yet. To me, it's pretty straightforward: I go to a doctor for help, I pay for their expertise, and I expect them to do their job. It's as simple as that.

Not at all. It isn't "chemicals" in that sense.

honestly, if you grab a decent 17-inch monitor with a high enough refresh rate, it can actually kick the teeth in of way too many LCDs out there

I disagree. Not by a long shot. Modern displays have moved way past that. No CRT today can really compete with a high-end LCD, especially when it comes to being easy on your eyes.
