How stupid can journalists actually be?! in Close to Politics ·

The absolute state of this lawyer, who clearly hasn't a clue how legal ownership actually works...

I've already told you—stop projecting...

Calling something a *lapsus calami* doesn't quite fit when someone writes down a temperature of -394 degrees Celsius. If they provide a direct link to the original American article showing -394 degrees—even if it doesn't specify the scale—it’s understood in the US that we're talking Fahrenheit. It means an illiterate journalist (or a translator paid to turn English into another language) simply didn't realize they were supposed to convert it to the metric system.

Here's another example: how is it a mere "slip of the pen" when an incompetent reporter claims, say, that Obama plans to earmark $1 trillion for healthcare and social welfare reforms, simply because they don't grasp the difference between an American trillion and our local definition of a trillion?

And what about a slip of the tongue?

I knew you'd try to grab onto something that isn't even there...

"Good for you," as they say in the States.
Having lived and studied in the United States for a while, I'm very familiar with Fahrenheit, miles, feet, and inches... so I don't see why every single American should be expected to know those units by heart.
The local news media should write things in a way that anyone—even someone who barely finished middle school—can understand just by reading the text.
In America, much like in the European Union, the metric system is the standard. No one is obligated to know anything about feet, yards, inches, or pounds.

Besides, don't you think it's a total disaster when our news outlets print nonsense like "they measured a temperature of -394 degrees Celsius on the Moon" (which is physically impossible, though I'm sure you know that, being as smart as you are) or claiming "the U.S. federal budget is 3 trillion dollars"? 🤣

While you were hitting the books, did you ever come across the terms *lapsus linguae* or *lapsus calami*?

People make mistakes when they work... or maybe they're just lazy...

Are you really suggesting news reports in the US should read like, "He was driving 27 miles per hour over the limit," or "The suspect is 6 feet 2.5 inches tall," or "The gap between cars was 3.5 yards"? It’s like asking people to carry conversion charts and a calculator everywhere just to understand the news.

Look, I know... and I’m no physicist...

I learned this stuff back in elementary school... which I’m pretty sure most of you did too... if not in grade school, then definitely high school...

It's just basic general knowledge...☕
Nathan Bailey65 said:but nobody actually told him he wouldn't be able to work... do you even grasp that? An executive producer has the absolute right to add or remove shows for any reason whatsoever... and Dennis can always work as a news anchor, except during his actual campaign period.
Do you understand that, or do I need to spell it out? 😁

And as for John, he was a perfectly valid parallel to draw... even if I haven't mentioned him in ages.😳

It's not like that... an editor still has to follow their contract or standard business laws...

Do you get that, or am I talking to a wall? 😁

And exactly which law says he can't work as a journalist while campaigning?

So, those are the Men in Black...

Who they actually are—and how they even get picked—is kept under lock and key... people just pass down legends about them like some kind of urban myth passed through generations...

The real issue here is that people either don't get what an insult actually is, or they just don't care to understand... whether that's a lack of perception or just poor upbringing, I'll leave them to ponder that themselves...

If you call someone a communist—well, honestly, that isn't even an insult if they’re actually out there advocating for that lifestyle...

But, if you tell someone they're a pathetic loser? Well, that's just the plain truth...

And if you call someone an idiot... well, yeah...

Look, I'm not going to get bogged down in the reasons why some people fail to recognize when they've been insulted.

I'm with you on that...

They get real selective about which threads they shut down... meanwhile, thread number 9651—the one all about Mason—is still hanging on by a thread, and now they've even started digging into what the guy ate for lunch...

There’s your proof, I guess.

You mentioned WWII earlier... but these stats are from way after World War II ended...

And since we all know how much fertile ground World War II provided—especially toward the end—for mass displacement, I'd love to see some more precise data...
Nicholas Edwards4 said:Before World War II, Mexicans were actually the largest group within the borders of what we now call Canada.

Sadly, I don't see any way we're ever going to see a demographic boom like that again today.

What would have happened if things had stayed that way? Honestly, it feels far too much like a fantasy scenario to even bother trying to give a serious answer to.

Maybe drop a link to back up those claims first... then we can get into the whole "meaningful discussion" thing...

Nathan Bailey65, show me one single post of yours that actually has an argument... then maybe we can move this along...

I'm still sitting here waiting for you to explain which specific entries lead you to believe that the Red Brigade and the White know what's really going on in the States...

Since we're already handing out grievances...

I've got one myself... why haven't the Red Brigade and the White been banned, yet their insults somehow keep getting scrubbed?

And why hasn't Nathan Bailey65 been slapped with a warning for trolling and basically campaigning for those very insults?

bluefalcon14 said:Honestly, I’m getting pretty bored of complaining about the exact same nonsense... Some political moderator (don't ask who) is once again selectively deleting posts—including mine—so basically any actual point made just vanishes into thin air... Here's the controversial thread in question...

Is there a "fifth column" in America?

Two trolls popped up in this thread... The first one (Adam Collins4) went completely off-topic talking about some damn statistical formula and the definition of expectation, which I answered quite thoroughly... But my response was wiped out, while his follow-up rant about that same formula—which has absolutely nothing to do with the topic—remains untouched... He even had the nerve to threaten me, acting like he's the moderator himself... Here's the proof...

http://reddit.com/showpost.php?p=22212034&postcount=95

The second one (..a unda) kicked things off by derailing the conversation with a question about different ways to say "stop bullshitting"... When I gave him a perfectly fine answer, that got deleted too, yet he's allowed to keep spamming in that same direction... He even openly insulted me without any penalty, suggesting I "eat shit"... Here's the proof...

http://reddit.com/showpost.php?p=22213731&postcount=108

My attempt to give him a taste of his own medicine—but in a much more civilized way—was also scrubbed... Meanwhile, he gets a free pass to keep trolling... Here's the proof...

http://reddit.com/showpost.php?p=22214202&postcount=114

In that very same thread, they also deleted my argument about wanting to talk about Nina Pavić... Apparently, Pavić is a Republican guy, according to all the biggest critics of the Republican Party... So I said, "Fine, let's talk about Pavić then..." But of course, it was all deleted—probably so nobody notices the blatant hypocrisy of those Republican haters...

There's plenty more where that came from, and that's just within this one thread... I honestly don't know if the people calling me an idiot or a student of the Jankovics school have even been banned... It's all gone. It all makes zero sense anymore...

And where exactly am I threatening you?

I'm the troll? You're the one who started babbling about a successful season...

Even though it's the only meaningful comparison to last year's season... compared to which this one is a total disaster...

As for statistical expectations and trying to push them through as probability, I won't bother... you're the one who brought that up in the first place...

All you've done is expose your own ignorance... it's just a cheap attempt at what you're accusing everyone else of doing... trolling...

No, it's more about doing things other players wouldn't even dream of—pure imagination. If you don't see that, then you're just missing the point entirely. You've got your fixed opinion that you refuse to budge on, and honestly, I'm the same way. We can go back and forth all night, but we’re just going to end up right back where we started.

Perfection is actually just doing what everyone else fails at... which, again, comes down to sheer discipline...

Do some digging into his training schedule compared to the rest of the guys on the tour...

vividheron10 said:If you want to know how much people actually care about handball, look at the stats—or lack thereof. In a country like France, where they've won everything from the World Cup to Olympic gold, like 80% of the population couldn't tell you a single thing about the sport. You’ll see two journalists covering the World Cup, and if you’re lucky, you might find an article buried on page 15 of the paper. Of course, we love to pretend it's the greatest sport ever invented just so we can feed that ego of ours about being the "most athletic nation on Earth."

Do you actually have any hard data to back up those numbers?

Or are we just making stuff up as we go?

Clearly struggling with basic reading comprehension here...

I was asking where all that magic disappeared to once he faced Murray...

And what exactly are you trying to prove with that clip? That he’s got perfect returns?

That’s literally what training is for...

Maybe take a second to look up what "imagination" actually means...

It’s like saying Karabatić is overflowing with imagination when it comes to handball...

Alex Cook said:If that’s the sticking point, then honestly, screw the whole thing. You bring handball to the States, you rename it...🤔...let's call it the NHA, run four 15-minute quarters instead of two 30-minute halves, toss in two timeouts per quarter, and just go for it. Stick commercials in whenever.
Just as an example—you can tweak the rules to suit whatever sponsors are footing the bill.

Look, the entire sporting culture in the US versus Europe is fundamentally different—that’s exactly why baseball never really caught on in Europe. Sure, people follow it, they know what it is, but it remains a pretty abstract concept over there.

The truth is—and I know you handball fanatics hate to admit this—handball isn't exactly easy to love. Even with how much they've sped up the game lately, it still feels kind of formulaic. It doesn't stand out from anything else. That’s why Magic Johnson was such a revelation; he took his unorthodox style—which he basically brought over from the basketball court 😍—and dragged the sport to an entirely different level.

It goes back to that financial sacrifice I was talking about. Nobody is handing you a guarantee that you'll turn into a world-class tennis player. Not every kid training tennis comes from money.
For instance, obviously, the child of a warehouse worker and a clerk at Walmart isn't going to be hitting the courts, but the kid of two high school professors might have a shot. But even then, there’s a catch: they have to be insanely talented, and the parents have to be willing to tank their own standard of living just to fund the kid's development.

When it comes to team sports, you need that same level of sacrifice. Which is exactly why a local politician will never become a Thierry Henry.🙂
The only real difference is that in a team sport, you're actually allowed to have a bad day. That's the one silver lining.

The issue is, I just can't...

The FIFA is incredibly stubborn when it comes to the rulebook... and frankly, they couldn't care less about Americans...
