Why aren't you banning severe insults? in Feedback & Suggestions ·
John Palmer9 said:Just look at how brutal people are on those Mexican forums—they immediately delete posts, ban users... I’ve actually had people threaten me over the phone, claiming they’d settle the score in person!

Since I am a massive advocate for absolute freedom of speech—the only thing I’d ever restrict is the volume of someone shouting in public—it’s hard for me to stomach these kinds of censorship measures on sub-forums dedicated to History or Politics here on this site. In my view, we shouldn't even be hiding behind the excuse of "hate speech" bans. It should be total, unadulterated free speech.

Perhaps it would be better if we adopted legislation more like this:
tribun.hr/poljska-zeli-uvesti-zakon-kojim-moze-kazniti-drustvene-mreze-uliko-na-ideoloskoj-osnovi-brisu-objave

Why on earth should anyone care about what you specifically stand for, or why should you feel this particular forum needs to be molded into your own personal vision?

There are plenty of other platforms out there—and hopefully, you're using English, but if not, consider this an opportunity to learn or brush up on it—that might suit your style better. Or, honestly, just build your own site so everything can be exactly how you want it.

The only thing I can't wrap my head around is why these shocked onlookers constantly pop up—acting absolutely stunned—asking "why this?" or "why that..." as if they've just walked into a trap.

To me, the real absurdity is the idea that all this constant venting—or what the moderators have labeled as "pointless whining"—is actually going to change anything(?). And honestly, why do they even bother posting on a forum that clearly doesn't align with their views—whether those are ideological, intellectual, or topical in the first place? 🕺

Would anyone here go write a column for Fox News and then run to complain because they were insulted, mocked, or had their comments deleted? Or would the author here go post on CNN and then act surprised when they receive the exact same treatment? I highly doubt it. So, I don't see how this forum is any different from any other platform.

Look, it’s not true to say I don't get it; it took me a few years to finally grasp the reality of the situation myself.

Maybe the solution is for the administration to be more explicit about the rules—the way the former owner used to be—but apparently, that hasn't been enough. Instead, they seem stuck in this policy of ignoring inquiries and letting people figure out the status quo on their own.

We live in a society—and yes, society exerts this constant pressure on us to conform, to suppress our true nature, and to muzzle our reactions. We aren't allowed to react based on how we actually feel; sometimes we’re falling apart inside, sometimes we feel like we’re about to snap, yet we’re expected to remain stone-faced—keeping that poker face so no one even notices we’re unsettled, let alone deeply disturbed. People wrap this up in pretty little labels like "growing up," "maturity," or "responsibility."

I’m telling you this—with good intentions, though take it however you will—because looking at your posts, I suspect this might be exactly what’s happening with you, even if it hasn't crossed your mind. It isn't just you; it's all of us. We have a choice: either we adapt to society, tuck ourselves away, and play the part of the socialized individual who is fully committed to mainstream norms, or we deal with the fallout.

You can stay on your current path—defying everyone and being brutally honest with yourself and others—or you can adopt this second, performative role. If you choose the former, don't expect society to validate you, give you anything, or accept you; in fact, expect them to try to tear you down. If you opt for the latter, your best guide will be observing how people react to your statements, your behavior, and your posts. You adjust, you try different approaches, until you eventually find the sweet spot where the people around you offer support and approval. That is what almost everyone—well, most people—does to get by; it’s one of the most fundamental aspects of life.

Anyway, I just wanted to lay it out for you plainly, as it took me far too long to realize it myself.
Girls from Coyote Ugly (2000) in Movies ·
Honestly, I thought the whole thing was pretty great when I first saw the movie. It was entertaining enough, and I actually really liked the lead actress.

Elizabeth Cooper2 said:Look at how many fans there are just here in America 🤣 Look, my point stands: the movie is fun precisely because it’s a bit of a mess. It isn't the best ever, nor is it the worst in its genre, but it holds its own. However, I've looked at what those kinds of bars actually look like in real life, and what they show in this film bears zero resemblance to reality; it's incredibly exaggerated.
By the way, someone brought up the budget—$45 million wasn't actually considered a low budget back in 2000. Just saying. Also, if I recall correctly, I read somewhere that this was one of the last films shot in New York City before 9/11. Personally, I think the film would have functioned much better and more effectively as a serious drama, but hey, if the director was tasked with turning it into what it became, who am I to judge?
As for the argument regarding the state of the USA at that time and how it contributes to the film's atmosphere, you could say that about pretty much any pre-9/11 film from the late 90s. I don't see how that somehow elevates the actual quality of the movie.

And how exactly do they look? 🍿
How to come to terms with aging alone in Psychology & Therapy ·
graniteeagle92 said:Hey everyone.

Don't mind the low post count—I used to have an account here years ago, but I couldn't even remember my old username.

To get straight to the point: I'm in my early thirties, single, and as I get older, the lack of a serious relationship is starting to weigh on me.
I don't know why, but I just don't seem to catch women's attention. I'm nothing special physically—not ugly, per se, but definitely below average.
Actually, that’s secondary. The real issue is that I feel like I have nothing to offer, and I'm too inexperienced for my age to even navigate a real relationship properly.
That’s fine, though. My question isn't about how to find a girlfriend; it's about how to stop the frustration that comes from not having one.

It's not so much frustration as it is sadness. To me, love is the most beautiful thing a person can experience. I've experienced it very little, and I always assumed it was in the cards for me—turns out, maybe not.
I don't ever want to be that person who is miserably in love again, where my entire mood depends on someone I can't stop thinking about. Luckily, I don't tend to fall too hard.

I've decided to accept being alone, but I'm struggling with the "how." I'd love to be an entrepreneur and live entirely for my work, but I lack the drive without that emotional connection. I wish I were like Dr. House—someone who could just channel everything into their work. But he's a fictional genius, and I don't have any standout talents.
Hobbies don't fulfill me anymore, my social circle has settled down and drifted apart, and my single friends are either in their mid-twenties—where they're busy going out and cycling through partners—or they're my age and feeling the same lack of motivation.

I don't have issues with drinking or temper, but I really don't want to end up an alcoholic or a bitter old man just because I haven't found someone to share life's highs and lows with.
Does anyone have any advice—if such a thing exists—on how to accept being alone and actually be okay with it?
Please don't try to sell me on "positive thinking" or tell me I'll eventually find someone. That tactic hasn't worked for me since high school.

Maybe I'm the last person who should be answering you, since I don't even understand what you're talking about. But regardless, here is my take 😁
so feel free to skip this if it doesn't resonate.

To me, it sounds like you're overthinking things a bit too much—this whole "lack of love" thing. What exactly do you mean by "love"? Love takes many forms, and whether or not someone is partnered up has absolutely nothing to do with their capacity to feel love.
It seems to me like you're conflating your inability to secure a relationship with some grand cosmic failure, and now you're idealizing it as if it's something monumental. You're exaggerating, and I say that because you're expressing fear that you'll become a bitter, alcoholic old man if you aren't in a relationship—what on earth does that have to do with having a partner or not? People in marriages turn into alcoholics and bitter wrecks all the time, too. And then there's your claim that "love" is the most beautiful thing a person can experience (though, again, I don't follow your definition). Plus, there's the sheer drama of your title.

How do you accept it? It's like any other obsession. You see everyone else playing with a certain toy, you don't have it, so suddenly it's the only thing you care about. You just have to grow up, stop being so impulsive and childish, and start being rational.

Michael Wilson5 said:Reading this and, well... sorry for jumping in, but I wanted to share my own experience. I've been at the same job for two and a half years now, permanent position. I have an overdraft limit of $8,000 and monthly installments of $2,500. I submitted a loan application and went down to the bank with all my paperwork. Before that, I spoke with a representative over the phone and laid everything out—all those debts I mentioned above. She told me there shouldn't be any issues getting the loan approved since I wasn't asking for a massive amount. A few days later, I walk into the branch with the documentation, and the banker asks where I work. I tell him I'm in the restaurant industry, and he shuts me down immediately. Says there's no way a loan is happening because hospitality is too risky right now, especially with COVID still hanging around. I've never had a loan before. I'm in a spot where I need the cash right now because of a situation I just can't resolve without it. I was asking for $2,200... honestly, I'm just disappointed in how the bank treats its clients. It makes me wonder about what this woman wrote. What are you supposed to do when there's simply no other way out? When you need the money immediately because something unpredictable happened, and after years of being a reliable customer, you turn to the bank and they just leave you hanging

Come on, lay out your situation so we can try to find a solution for you that doesn't involve a bank loan.

Personally, I’d view it as the bank doing me a favor by not handing out a risky loan, and I'd probably start questioning the stability of my own job—but that’s just me.

Alex White7 Asks:
My father passed away nearly two years ago—leaving behind a mountain of debt that we’re still struggling to climb out of—plus we had to borrow money just to cover the funeral costs because everything happened so suddenly. Then, last year, we were forced to buy a new car since fixing the old one was becoming a total money pit. To make matters worse, I was sidelined by illness for six months, leaving my mother as the sole breadwinner for the entire family. I finally landed a new job last month—it's a contract position, nothing permanent—and while the pay is slightly better than minimum wage (a small upgrade from last year, at least), there's zero breathing room. Between all the bills and the fact that most of my mom's income is being swallowed up by my late father's financial mess, there is absolutely no way I can save any significant amount of money, even if I grind for the next five years.

It’s urgent—I need to get out of here. I’ve been putting this off for way too long, mostly because it’s easy to let myself sink into guilt when dealing with the person who brought me into this world—but that’s a whole other mess entirely. If I don't make my move by the end of next year, before my birthday hits, the opportunity will be gone for good. Getting away from this house is my absolute last shot; nothing else is working—not the medication, not the therapy, and even my Sparrow sessions have become completely useless.

I had every intention of using that money to clear out the remaining debts and put down a deposit on an apartment in a bigger city—somewhere like Chicago or maybe New York. My mother would finally be free from my father's mounting debts, which means I wouldn't have to constantly worry about her—and more importantly, I could finally break away from this current circus and actually try to build a decent life for myself.

Finding a job won't be an issue for me—I’ve done just about everything under the sun and I have plenty of experience to show for it—but let's face it, the pay scales in DC are still a bit underwhelming. My plan is to borrow some capital upfront, with a firm agreement to pay it back by a specific date next year—say, early June. The strategy is simple: grab the first solid position I can find, stay long enough to build up the credit history needed to secure a loan from a bank like Chase, and then pull that money out to settle my debt with whoever I borrowed from. At least with a major bank, the interest rates will actually be reasonable.

Unless I suddenly strike it rich out of thin air, I don't exactly have another option.

Give me a break—why on earth would you take out a loan just to head up to Washington, D.C.? You’d literally need... $667And why on earth would you take out a loan because of that?
Since you've got reliable internet access, now is the time to start scouting apartments and rooms around Washington, D.C.—seriously, look at them right now. This is your window of opportunity because the students have already cleared out, and the new crop hasn't arrived yet. Once that rush starts, finding anything remotely affordable becomes an absolute nightmare. You should probably find someone to help you hunt for a roommate, too.
I have no idea what kind of work you’ve done up to this point, but food delivery is absolutely booming in Washington, D.C. right now—you could sign up with DoorDash, Uber Eats, or Pause and start making moves immediately. Assuming you have an old bike lying around somewhere, you should be good to go; if not, just check the "Sharing is caring" group on Facebook. Someone there will likely give you one or at least let you borrow it.
If you’ve spent your career working in restaurants or retail food service and you’re looking to pivot into the whole eco-conscious or vegan lifestyle niche, reach out—I can point you toward some immediate openings. I won't sugarcoat it: the pay isn't exactly life-changing right out of the gate. This is just what's currently on my radar—there are undoubtedly a mountain of other options out there—but I’m not deeply embedded in those specific circles, so I don't have eyes on everything. I do know there is a massive demand for childcare and instructional roles. There are also remote gigs available where you can pull in some extra cash, though again, if you want to see anything meaningful, you’re going to have to work your tail off.

Look, you should honestly try to get ahead of this while you're still at home—start calling around and scouting for work now. You want everything lined up before you even arrive. And regarding the apartment hunt? Trust me, landlords are always going to jump on someone who already has a steady paycheck over someone claiming they're "about to start looking." Even if that's not actually true, it just sounds better in their heads—and in this market, perception is everything.
Look, once you finally take a step back—once you actually get your head on straight and stand on your own two feet—that’s when you should start thinking about paying off someone else's debt. You do that with whatever is left over from your paycheck after you've covered your own damn expenses. You don't go out and take out new loans to cover for them. Period.

Either pack your bags and head abroad if you're so desperate to escape—that’s actually your best bet for paying off those debts faster—and then maybe, just maybe, you can move back to DC or wherever else you fancy. But listen, do yourself a favor: secure a job before you even think about leaving, and for heaven's sake, stop taking out new loans.

Can someone explain why you’re so desperate for that $25,000 that you'd be willing to do just about anything to get your hands on it?
Look, my take might not be popular here, but I honestly don't get it—how can people working full-time for seven months straight not manage to save $8333, yet they genuinely believe they'll somehow scrape together enough to pay it all back—plus interest—in the next seven, fourteen, or twenty-one months? Some people clearly lack even a shred of self-awareness or basic logic.

Edit: Just caught the last post. Honestly, I don't understand the math behind these moves—taking out a second loan just to cover the first one? It would be so much simpler to just tighten your belt, pay off the debt without piling on more, and then actually live within your means.

Honestly, my partner and I (both employees) totally fell for it—we got sucked into one of those "Jobs and Career" threads where everyone is complaining about how impossible it is to find work. We actually started trying to give them unsolicited advice, telling them to "do this" or "try that," and we ended up just infuriating everyone. We were completely out of touch with their reality, acting like we understood what they were going through when we clearly didn't.

If anyone is actually considering trying a specific diet before surgery, I’ll share what I’ve gathered from people who experimented with this themselves—people who found it genuinely helped them within a 10 to 15-day window.
Because you always see those generic recommendations to "eat more fiber," but honestly? That isn't always the case.
So, here is what you should actually avoid:
1. Dairy products
2. Whole grains
3. Sweets and citrus fruits (oranges, lemons, all types of citrus, bananas...)
4. Legumes (beans, chickpeas, lentils...)

Look, I wanted to put this out there because the standard advice is usually to load up on fruit and whole grains—which, let’s be real, feels like swallowing razor blades right before you head into surgery. This is based on the conclusions of people who tested this on themselves and realized exactly what was making their condition worse. And hey, it doesn't cost anything to give it a shot.
