Universal Soldier: Regeneration (2009) in Movies ·
stormystag43 said:Is this new one even worth watching? The first part was an absolute masterpiece.

Look... it’s not quite hitting the heights of the first one, but it’s miles better than the sequel, or anything Steven Seagal has filmed backwards in the last ten years.👍 Honestly, this one caught me off guard... especially for a B-movie. The cinematography is top-tier and the directing holds up too. It’s shot beautifully, and the action scenes are just raw and brutal—plus, there are plenty of them. Especially toward the end; those last 30 minutes are non-stop carnage. Jean-Claude Van Damme basically does whatever he wants here LOL. The plot isn't exactly groundbreaking—it's a standard search-and-destroy setup—but that matters less than the action anyway. Dolph Lundgren has a pretty small role (he doesn't show up until about the 50-minute mark), and he almost feels unnecessary, but man, he gets absolutely wrecked, just like in the first movie. He managed to outshine Van Damme even with that limited screen time. The locations feel a bit cheap since everything happens in abandoned, crumbling buildings, but since the story takes place in a wasteland like Chernobyl, it actually fits the vibe perfectly. Plus, like I said, the solid photography really pulls the whole thing together.
So far, I've seen a bunch of positive reviews online calling this movie a fun B-movie... here's one of them (full review is at the link), so take a look if you're interested.😉👍

Universal Soldier: Regeneration Review

Lundgren's character Andrew Scott might be experiencing déjà vu, but viewers familiar with the Universal Soldier franchise will find something remarkably different in Director John Hyams Universal Soldier : Regeneration takes this exhausted franchise in a totally fresh direction, breathing new life into the whole thing. It’s a slick, tight, and high-octane ride that actually delivers. It’s all wrapped up in a direct-to-video package. Even though the plot is pretty straightforward and predictable on the surface, Universal Soldier : Regeneration keeps a few secrets and surprises tucked neatly away for The film's second half and RELENTLESS Final Act , and while The run-and-gun action and cold , Eastern European / Russian setting aren't New , The film nevertheless works thanks to a no-nonsense approach that trims All The Fat OFF of What makes typically mediocre or subpar DTV Action pictures sol terrible and focuses on creating a ballet of action that's supported by a solid and reserved score that both work in harmony to bring to The picture a novel and engaging Feel that makes IT easily One of The Best direct-to-video Action Movies in years. Honestly, this is easily one of the best direct-to-video action movies in years—maybe even in the entire history of the genre..

Universal Soldier : Regeneration really doesn’t Care What ’ people think about its direct-to-video status, which is a damn shame because it deserves way more credit than it gets. Honestly, this beats most big-budget movies hitting theaters right now. Director John Hyams shows Great potential , his sur hand guiding an Action film that's raw. Universal Soldier : Regeneration keeps a few secrets and surprises tucked neatly away for The film's second half and RELENTLESS Final Act , and while The run-and-gun action and cold , Eastern European / Russian setting aren't New , The film nevertheless works thanks to a no-nonsense approach that trims All The Fat OFF of What makes typically mediocre or subpar DTV Action pictures sol terrible and focuses on creating a ballet of action that's supported by a solid and reserved score that both work in harmony to bring to The picture a novel and engaging Feel that makes IT easily One of The Best direct-to-video Action Movies in years. Sony's Blu-ray release does the film justice, with a sharp 1080p transfer that nails the gritty vibe, a killer lossless soundtrack, and some extra features that are actually worth your time. This surprisingly solid DTV picture earns an equally surprising recommendation.

The version is actually decent... honestly, this DVD screener looks almost as good as a high-quality DVD rip.🤷The only weird thing is the picture flips to black and white for about 5 seconds every 20 minutes... but I don't care at all. I've already watched the movie twice LOL.😁👍

BTW... here's some more promo stuff...

Repo Men (2010) in Movies ·
So, could you ever actually picture Jude Law as an action hero? And I’m not talking about that polished guy from Sherlock Holmes—I mean a gritty, three-day-stubble, ass-kicking badass who tears through villains without breaking a sweat. You can't, right?
Well, surprise. Jude Law is stepping into that exact role in a brutal, bloody Sci-Fi thriller called Men in Black, hitting theaters in mid-April 2010. It's being directed by Miguel Sapochnik, who's mostly known for a single film called The Dreamer from 2000. Alongside Jude Law, we've got a heavy-hitting cast including Academy Award ® winner Forest Whitaker, Liev Schreiber, RZA, Alice Braga, and Carice van Houten.
Judging by the trailer, it hits those same notes as classics like Minority Report, RoboCop, and Total Recall—think massive corporations pulling all the strings, heavy violence, dark humor, and a fugitive on the run. It also digs into consumerism and the terrifying reality of what happens when you can't pay your debts, where the consequences are way worse than just losing your house or car.
One interesting bit: Leonardo DiCaprio was originally lined up for the lead, but he dropped out for some reason, leaving the role to Jude Law.
Like I said, it drops in mid-April.

When he can’t make the payments, The Union sends its toughest enforcer, Remy’s former partner Jak (Academy Award ® winner Forest Whitaker), to track him down.
Now that the hunter has become the hunted, Remy joins Beth (Alice Braga), another debtor who teaches him how to vanish from the system. And as He and jak embark on a chase across a landscape populated by maniacal friends and foes, one man will become a reluctant champion for thousands on the run.

I'd sign off on that... but honestly... if we actually started making different genres, maybe even some disaster flicks (there are plenty of scripts out there that would kill in the US), maybe the whole industry wouldn't be such a mess in the first place.🤷

briskhound2 said:Van Damme has plenty of movies, but most of them—especially lately—have been total misses, including that Universal Soldier sequel. This JCVD flick was actually shot maybe last year, and it’s great... honestly one of those rare cinematic surprises (considering what we usually expect from him as an actor) that I almost went to see twice in a row. He basically "unmasked" himself through this fictional story, and it's a solid recommendation. Honestly, after watching this JCVD, I have even more respect for him as a creator.

Regarding this Soldier movie, I've got a good feeling about it since Peter Hymes is involved (even if his dad directing might mean he gets some pointers🙂), and Van Damme made two solid movies with him, so it should be decent at the very least. Plus, seeing Lundgren and Van Damme together... man, those were the glory days.

Well, now... it depends on which one you're talking about. For instance, compared to his "rival," Seagal, Van Damme has made way fewer movies over the last 9 years, but they're much higher quality. Take "Replicant," for example—it was actually pretty good for a B-tier DTV movie, both in production and acting (playing the main villain and a clone with the mindset of a 10-year-old is tough for any action hero). I'd especially highlight "In Hell," a prison drama where Van Damme was excellent, and the action, specifically the fights, took a backseat. Then there's "Wake of Death," which, despite being a B-movie, is quite dark, violent, and a cool watch in that HK style. And I definitely have to mention "Until Death" where, if you ask me, Van Damme gave the best performance of his career prior to JCVD.
Anyway... just re-checking those titles👍

PS. Universal Soldier : Regeneration is "out"😁...so if anyone wants to watch it, go ahead, haha👍😁

Looking forward to this one; feels like it might actually be worth a watch.

Man... the second one was pure trash... but honestly, that humor made it funny enough to keep me entertained, haha.🤣

As for this trilogy... the first round of reviews wasn't even that bad, so I'm hoping for a solid, fun action flick.

Come on 😢 😢

What does the movie selection even boil down to in our theaters? John Wick is sitting at number 6 at the US box office, yet we won't even get to see it. What kind of movies are left for us? Just cookie-cutter, formulaic comedies, boring horror flicks, and whatever big blockbuster happens to be topping the charts... that's it.
Give me a break, what a joke. I'll just head over to Austria instead.

They basically confirmed it right in the Continental movie... sorry, not sorry.🤷

By the way, that British mini-series was actually top-tier.

Yup... this is actually a movie adaptation of an American mini-series from back in '85. What's pretty cool is that the same guy directed both the series and this film—Martin Campbell (the director behind GoldenEye, The Mask of Zorro, The Legend of Zorro, and Casino Royale).

A slightly more detailed take...😁

Black Dynamite (2009) 5/5 - TRAILER
Another one from this year I was hyped for, and honestly, it delivered everything I wanted and then some. "Black Dynamite" is a straight-up little masterpiece. It works perfectly both as a parody and as a genuine tribute to those 70s blaxploitation flicks like the "Shaft" series, "Foxy Brown", "Black Belt Jones", or "Super Fly". They nailed every single detail—from the 70s film grain and the soundtrack to the wardrobe and even the kung-fu that was everywhere back then thanks to Bruce Lee. Even though it came out this year, it feels like it was filmed 40 years ago, which isn't a bad thing at all—it's actually phenomenal!
There have been other movies that tried to parody or revive that 70s era, like "Undercover Brother" or "Baadasssss!", but compared to Dynamiet, those are just weak attempts.
The plot is hilarious and the cast is incredible... especially Michael Jai White (who played Spawn in the movie of the same name). If you ask me, he gave his best performance here—tough, cool, and freaking hilarious all at once. Plus, the fight scenes look great!

Bottom line... highly recommend it to everyone!

Harry Brown (Caine) (2009) in Movies ·
Harry Brown (2009) 5/5 - TRAILER
First glance? This movie is a total masterpiece. Honestly, though, I wasn't expecting anything less.
Like everyone else already figured out from the trailer, this flick heavily channels "Death Wish" and "Gran Torino," and it actually manages to match—maybe even top—them both. It’s a super violent, brutal, and raw movie with a dark atmosphere and a gritty style to match. The first half plays out like a heavy social drama where director Daniel Barber perfectly captures the vibe of South Chicago Public Housing, showing just how messed up and violent today's youth can be, how street violence is spiraling, and the lonely, isolated life led by our lead, a retiree named Harry Brown.
But once the second half kicks in, everything shifts into a raw, brutal crime thriller revenge flick. Harry transforms from a seemingly harmless, fragile old man into a merciless vigilante fueled by pure rage and a thirst for vengeance. Sir Michael Caine absolutely kills it here, whether he's playing the frail senior just trying to get by or the killer taking people out without mercy. His performance is nothing short of phenomenal!
Sure, the movie has some flaws (like the detective Frampton character), but they're barely noticeable. The plot itself has been told a million times before, but it doesn't feel like a cliché here. If anything, considering how much stuff like this has been hitting the news in the US over the last year or two—with headlines constantly about thugs beating or even killing people (just look at what happened to Luka Ritz)—you can really relate to what's happening on screen.

Bottom line: what a movie!
