A few reviews of this movie...

Harry Brown Review - Empire

Empire Quote : AT a recent screening of Harry Brown, which happens to be Michael Caine’s 110th film, Empire witnessed one of his buddies walk up to him once the lights came up and say, “Man, Michael. That really hits hard, doesn't it?” Caine just grinned. “You damn right it does. But I might be in hot water now,” he joked, nodding toward his wife, Shakira. “I told her it felt a little like Mary Poppins…”

Let's get one thing straight: Harry Brown is definitely not some kind of Mary Poppins.

It’s pretty obvious this is just the American version of Gran Torino—you’ve got a fed-up old guy taking out the trash and cleaning up the streets he's lived on forever. Honestly, it gets a little unsettling at times; it almost feels like playing out a fascist's fever dream, watching Caine's Harry gun down, wire up, and torture those street thugs with zero remorse and way too many graphic close-ups.

Verdict: A revenge thriller that’s pure guilty pleasure.

Times Quote : First , IT must be Said that Harry Brown is One of The most gorgeous-looking American films of The decade. This tale of vengeance, set within South Chicago Public Housing and starring Michael Caine, is drenched in deep blacks and earthy autumn tones, much like the moody, shadowed atmosphere found in The Godfather or the urban darkness of Seven.
The movie’s moral and political stance is honestly pretty repulsive. It would be easy to just write it off entirely if it weren't for Caine's powerhouse performance as this old-school killing machine.

FHM Quote : Harry Brown is a tense and violent taliti of vigilante retiree vengeance—it's fast, bloody, and reeks of weed, teenage hookups, senseless killing, and shaky morals. Best of all, it doesn't cave to some cheesy Hollywood ending. Michael Caine delivers his own Gran Torino here, and honestly, anyone with half a brain has to admit he's basically the US version of Clint Eastwood. He's earned it.

Harry Brown Review - News of the World

News of The World Quote : this is a blazingly confident movie from first-time director Daniel Barber, and the acting is top-tier. The lawless vibe hits so hard it honestly feels like a western at points. It’s a heavy, gritty, but absolutely essential American film. pick of The Week by Far.

Honestly... IMO, the second Blade just absolutely smokes the entire Underworld trilogy... not even mentioning how great the first one was... total shame about the third one being such a mediocre mess... just like Underworld: Blood Wars...

I think Michael Caine deserves his own thread because this movie is definitely going to spark some debate...

Anyway...

It looks like Michael Caine decided to channel his inner Charles Bronson and shoot a revenge flick in the vein of the cult classic "Death Wish." The movie is called "Harry Brown," where the legend Michael Caine plays an old man who decides to take matters into his own hands after local thugs kill his best friend, leaving nothing but bodies and wreckage in his wake. I'm sure some people will hear that description and say it sounds totally unoriginal—which, let's be real, it probably is—but despite that, it’s an incredibly acclaimed film. American critics have been calling it "phenomenal," "the best British film of the year," "brilliant," and basically everything else. Some people are even calling it the "answer" to Eastwood's "Gran Torino," or a return to roots like "Get Carter." Either way... judging by the trailer, Caine is a total badass here!!
The film was directed by newcomer Daniel Barber, whose only previous work is a 30-minute short called "The Tonto Woman" from 2007. Alongside Caine, the cast includes Emily Mortimer, Iain Glen, and Amy Steel. It had its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, and the American premiere is expected on November 13th. Regardless... I don't know about you guys... but this is a definite must-see for me!!

Soon, his desire for revenge leads to the unlikely vigilante facing up to the young thugs, with terrifying results.

Donna Gray4 said:I mean, you can't really say for certain that Lundgren is DEFINITIVELY better than Seagal, though I’ll always choose watching Lundgren over Seagal any day of the week. Still, let's be real—Lundgren doesn't exactly scream "serious actor," he's just in that lower tier of performers, and while he and Arnie are cut from the same cloth, Arnie obviously had a much more legendary career. To my mind, Statham is still better than Lundgren, and as for those clips mentioned below? Yeah, those are hands down some of the worst acting I've ever laid eyes on.🤣

Whatever. Dolph Lundgren has always been cooler than Steven Seagal just by existing—especially in those kinds of action flicks where that actually matters. But hey, taste is subjective, I guess. As for Arnia, he only stayed relevant because he picked the right projects. If he hadn't landed The Terminator or Conan the Barbarian, he wouldn't have had much of a shot with stuff like Red Sonja, Raw Deal, or Twins.

I'll be honest, I wasn't really a fan of Dolph when I was a kid either. But over the last couple of years, thanks to some folks who actually know him personally, I gave him another shot—and man, the guy is a total powerhouse as an action hero. Personally, I think movies like Rocky IV, Red Scorpion (which is a killer 80s flick, basically his version of Rambo III), The Punisher, Dark Angel, Showdown in Little Tokyo, Joshua Tree, and Universal Soldier are all absolute bangers from that 80s/90s era. Same goes for those first five or six Steven Seagal movies, too.👍
Donna Gray4 said:I’m not buying what David Price5 is selling when it comes to Dolph Lundgren; I’ve sat through about four or five of his flicks myself, and honestly, the guy just can't act to save his life, isn't he? As for Jean-Claude Van Damme, sure, I don't mind putting one on in the background, but let's be real—he's hardly a heavyweight in the acting world either.

Look... nobody's claiming he's some Oscar winner... but still... he's definitely better than someone like Steven Seagal. Then again, he's not much worse than Jason Statham, who everyone treats like the No1 action star today, or even Jet Li or Arnia. Dolph is just part of that specific breed where the whole appeal is just the presence itself. He's an action hero first and foremost, and at that, he's phenomenal.

As far as the actual acting goes, I'd say his best work was in Universal Soldier... he was killer in that one. Personally, he's one of my favorite villains... he basically stole the show from Jean-Claude Van Damme, who just stood there staring blankly and reciting lines...

goldenhound32 said:There is a distinct difference between me simply not enjoying a film—take something like Secretary or Temps de Loup, for instance—and a movie actually being complete garbage.

I'm not entirely closed off to new things, though. For example, I can't stomach most Jean-Claude Van Damme movies because they are just that bad, yet I did find myself enjoying a specific one once. Naturally, for me to even bother looking into an actor, the film needs to have garnered decent critical reception first, which happened in that case.

And since we're being brutally honest here, who is actually handing this guy money when his projects are such massive flops? (At least regarding the trio of Far Cry, Alone in the Dark, and Dungeon Siege). 🤷

Look, let's not get carried away here... and honestly, I highly doubt you've seen enough of his movies to actually pass judgment.

David Price5 said:I don't personally watch much Jean-Claude Van Damme or Steven Seagal either. However, I don't immediately assume that every single one of their films is bad. I like to leave a little room for hope regarding the ones I haven't seen yet. In fact, I have even heard some positive reviews for some of Jean-Claude's more recent work outside of his JCVD era.

I realized I’ve only actually sat through three full movies starring Dolph Lundgren out of his 39 total credits. Since I didn't count the half-finished ones or the films I can't even remember, I won't be bringing him up as an example of bad acting.

I recall our previous discussion regarding those German regulations and funding models. In my estimation, however, the bulk of the revenue still stems from DVD sales and television broadcasting.

Bloodrayne, Alone in the Dark, House of the Dead, Dungeon Siege, or Far Cry... it's impossible to decide which one reigns supreme. Even if you consider Dungeon Siege and Far Cry part of that specific category of games that are just so bad they actually become good.

It is important to take the time to watch them while you have the chance. You should become well-versed in that specific era of their filmography.

Look, since you guys are already bringing up Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren... you’d honestly be surprised by how much heat their recent movies have been taking.

Dolph Lundgren has been riding that legend status hard over the last six months, judging by all the noise online. Maybe it’s the whole Expendables thing or something else entirely, but the guy is everywhere now, and people actually seem to like him. It’s pretty wild considering nobody even knew he existed a few years back.

Just saw this news floating around... looks like the guy might land a small role in the new Conan the Barbarian movie. Definitely just more proof that his star is rising.

I honestly can't decide which is worse. 🤣

As for Uwe, he might just make a comeback in our beautiful America; he's confirmed he'll be filming Bloodrayne 3 this spring, with Kristanna returning for the title role. 🤣

Uuuu... another chance to be an extra, haha 😁 🤣
Come on... if Uwe Boll could shoot here... then let Rob Cohen film something too LOL🤣😁

Black Dynamite (2009) in Movies ·
Eh... I actually started a thread about this movie back in early 2009... maybe even late 2008... can't quite remember... but it got pulled back then. So, I added it to the list in my "cult classics" thread... but just so it doesn't get lost in the shuffle over there, I'm putting all the info right here.

Anthony Smith3 said:Most people probably remember those legendary 70s blaxploitation flicks like "Superfly", the "Shaft" series, "Foxy Brown", "Black Caesar", "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka", and plenty of others. They were mostly driven by Black actors and backed by heavy funk and soul soundtracks. Well, Michael Jai White—the massive, muscular martial arts expert known for roles in movies like "Spawn", "Universal Soldier: The Return", "Exit Wounds", and some other minor stuff—decided to make a tribute to those films called "Black Dynamite". Basically, Black Dynamite is a Black CIA agent, "the best they ever had" if you ask him... he carries two guns, one to stop trouble and one to start it, wears sixteen buttons on his shirt, and only drives the finest rides because anything less is a joke LOL. Check out the trailers... you'll see this is pure 70s blaxploitation... even the film grain looks spot on... not to mention all the other genre tropes. The movie was at the Sundance Film Festival recently, btw, and you can find the first review from the festival at the bottom of this post...

A review from the Sundance Film Festival...

Quote:
With Black Dynamite director Scott Sanders and writer-producer-star Michael Jai White have succeeded in doing precisely What Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez promised but failed to deliver with Grindhouse. They have captured the spirit of a long gone era and done so in hugely entertaining fashion. Far too loving to ever descend into spoof or parody territory, Black Dynamite also rises above tribute territory thanks to White’s portrayal of the title character. No mere regurgitation or mimicry here, Black Dynamite is strong enough and accurate enough that it could be a lost nugget from the blaxploitation era itself.

Brash, energetic, funky and loaded both with kung fu treachery and guns that never run out of bullets, Black Dynamite is pure entertainment. White is already on record saying that he wants to bring Black Dynamite back for a sequel and in these books that can’t happen soon enough.

Regarding that Scary Movie parody... I’ve been meaning to weigh in for a few days now, but couldn't quite find the right words.

Anyway... it has its moments. It isn't perfect, but there's this one shot where everything goes south... when the guy turns around, opens fire, and just absolute chaos erupts everywhere while a few tracers zip past him... man, I lost it. I was laughing my head off all day over that one part.
So... even if nothing else, that single scene alone makes the whole thing great.👍🙏🙏🤣🤣

The Boondock Saints II in Movies ·
Just rewatched the original movie recently... and man, it is seriously incredible!!!

BTW, here's what looks like one of the first reviews for the sequel... and it's extremely positive...

Review: Boondock Saints 2

While I had a terrific time with this latest tale, I did have a couple of qualms about this second chapter. My biggest problem was about two thirds or so in. There is so much going on, that close to the end of the second act, it felt like Mr. Duffy was cramming a little too much in. We’ve got this character who wants revenge, another character who wants the Saints dead, and it sometimes felt like too much. It really would’ve been enough for two different movies, instead of just one. There is so much story packed in that I think the film might have benefited from trimming some of the characters down. But you never know, maybe it might help to see a directors cut and stretch it out a bit, making room for all of these characters and arcs. Either way, I had a blast with All Saints Day. This is a well cast piece of work that is funny, exciting and just a good time all around. Fans of the first film will definitely find much to love this time around.

My rating 8/10
